Dear Friends and Neighbors:

One year ago, in my Dear Friends andNeighbors message, I announced the for-mation of the Prince William County ParksFoundation. Since that time, theFoundation has developed an activeBoard of Directors, selected a park projectthat needs additional funding (ourUniversal Sports Field at Hellwig Park),hosted an introductory event at theUniversal Field, formed the Friends of theParks Membership Program and startedfund-raising initiatives. What a great com-munity partnership effort.

But they are not alone in providing yourpark system with invaluable support. OurTrails and Blueways Council, the PrinceWilliam Trails and Streams Coalition, andnumerous other volunteer groups havestepped up to construct, repair and assistin the development of numerous parks, trails and maintenance efforts on yourbehalf.

In today’s economy, no park system alonecan provide all of the services citizensrequire. We are all dependent on the vol-unteer efforts of you, your neighbors andmembers of your family to ensure thatwhen you want to use your parks, theywill be ready for your visit.

This is the time of year where all of us tendto become a bit retrospective. Maybe that isbecause the recent holidays provided uswith the opportunity to be thankful for allwe have. Or maybe we were fortunateenough to enjoy a safe, happy and healthycelebration with family and friends. I amfortunate for the many members of ourcommunity who have provided the extratime and energy throughout the year tohelp ensure that every person who visitsour parks, centers, trails or streams has agreat experience.

To those of you, who have volunteeredwith us throughout 2011, thank you! To allof you who want to join us in our efforts, contact any park manager or visit ourwebsite to find the volunteer project thatmeets your goals of contributing to keep-ing our park system one of the best in thecountry!
