Sermon and Study Series

January Sermon and Study Series

In January we will be exploring the meaning of baptism in the

Christian Faith.

On January 12 we will be focusing on the covenant that we

enter with God at baptism.

On January 19 we will explore the presence of the Holy Spirit in

baptism.

On January 26 we will examine the call that all Christians

receive at our baptism.

This will be way to remember what it means to be baptized,

what it means to be in a

priesthood of all believers and

the important role of the Holy

Spirit in the life of each believer.

A companion study will be

offered during the 10:15 AM

Connect and Grow Hour each

Sunday.

Sermon and Study Series

February Sermon and Study Series

In the Next Level Innovations process, we developed a new vision

statement. Our vision is to be:

A welcoming congregation inviting all God’s children to

experience and share Christ’s transforming love.

In February we will be spending time casting this vision. One of the

ways we will be casting this vision is on Sunday mornings in worship.

Each week, we will spend time breaking down this statement.

On February 2 we will give attention to the themes of: welcoming

and inviting

On February 9 we will explore the phrase “all God’s children”.

On February 16 We will lift up the importance of not only

experiencing Christ’s love, but our willingness to be transformed by

such love.

On February 23 we will finish by unpacking what it means for us to

share Christ through mission and service, as well as though telling

our story and faith-sharing.

A companion study will be offered during the 10:15 AM Connect

and Grow Hour each Sunday hosted by the Next Level Innovations

Vision Alignment Team.

Lenten Sermon and Study Series, beginning March 1

Just turning on the news lets us know we are living in uncertain

times. Economic instabilities, eruptions of violence, and natural

catastrophes can alter the lives and landscapes of entire

communities. Our individual lives are often just as unsteady:

relationships can break, plans can falter, and confidence can

fail. The reality is that in our fast-changing, unpredictable world

there are few guarantees in life. It is those who are willing to

embrace uncertainty and make the risky decision to follow Jesus

who will reap the greatest rewards.

Embracing the Uncertain invites us this Lent to engage and

wrestle with life’s uncertainties, not ignore them. We will focus on

six post-Transfiguration, pre-Passion stories in the Gospels. Each of

these stories are signposts in the gospel narrative, pointing at a

world filled with uncertainty, but pointing us forward to a cross

that can show us how to follow Jesus with courage, hope, and

obedience.

A companion study will be offered during the 10:15 AM Connect

and Grow Hour each Sunday, as well as Thursdays at 11:00 AM.

Confirmation is a time when a Christian publically “confirms” their

intention to live the vows of their baptismal and membership

covenant, and becomes a member of the local congregation and

The United Methodist Church.

Who: 8th graders & high schoolers who haven’t taken confirmation.

When: Thursday evenings (7:00-8:30 PM) from February to May.

Cost: $135.00 (this covers the weekend retreat to Camp Highroad, the

day retreat, confirmation t-shirt, Bible, curriculum, and reception on

Confirmation Sunday). For info on scholarships, contact Jeremy Vest.

Important dates:

Feb 6: 7:00 Orientation

Feb 8: Day Retreat at CUMC

Mar 15: Optional Trip to Cathedral or Basilica

Mar 27-29: Confirmation Retreat

May 14: 7:00pm Rehearsal

May 16: 5:30pm Communion Service

May 17: Confirmation Sunday

Confirmation is important because this program helps students begin

to understand what it means to be a fully devoted follower of Jesus

Christ, and how to live their faith. Confirmation is a time of intentional

preparation and it gives students the opportunity to study the Christian

faith. After completing the class, the students have the opportunity to

stand before the congregation and affirm their faith and commitment

to Christ.

Hypothermia Shelter March 11 and 12

The weather outside is frightful, and Centreville UMC cares

about those who are out in it! Among CUMC’s many ministries

serving those in need, the hypothermia shelter is particularly

meaningful.

We partner with churches all over Fairfax County to provide

overnight shelter for the homeless during the cold winter months.

In March, CUMC will host the shelter for 2 nights at St. Stephens

UMC in Burke.

We are looking for dinner servers, food providers, evening and

overnight hosts, breakfast providers, and more. Make a

difference, and join the effort. We need you, and more

importantly, God’s people need you!

Visit www.centreville-umc.org beginning in February to see the

list of needs and to sign up.

Mission Trips 2020

Sneedville, TN

June 20-27 July 26-August 1

Each summer, a mission team of youth and adults travel to

Sneedville, TN, a small town in Hancock County, to serve throughout

the community. Hancock County is one of the most financially

disadvantaged counties in the U.S. Throughout the week the mission

team centers on God, seeking to be in partnership in God’s mission.

Devotion, praise and worship are an important element of each day.

The team serves in the community in four areas of ministry –

construction, a Vacation Bible School program, a nursing home

ministry, and a women’s program. The team works closely with

Jubilee Project, a United Methodist ministry.

Sneedville, TN

Appalachia Service Project

Appalachia Service Project (ASP) is a Christian Ministry, open to all

people, that inspires hope through volunteer home repair in Central

Appalachia. ASP’s vision is that substandard housing in Central

Appalachia will be eradicated and that everyone who comes into

contact with this ministry will be transformed. Teams of youth and

adults from CUMC participate in these summer mission programs,

reaching out with God’s love to provide a promising future to families

in these remote communities.

2020 trip details and application forms will be available January 12.

Make serving God’s people part of your summer!
