YOUR VOICE: PUBLIC SPEAKING FOR KIDS
Wednesdays
Famously, Americans' number one fear is public speaking
while death only ranks as number two. This profound fear starts
at an early age. We take the fear out of speaking before an audi‐
ence by ge ng kids talking in front a suppor ve group about
things in which they are interested. They write speeches on
subjects of their choice and prac ce delivering them to the
assembled students. As the kids prac ce in this low‐pressure
environment, they learn skills like standing up tall, using a loud
voice and making eye contact. They watch the speeches of public
figures and cri que what is successful and not so successful.
They hold fun and engaging debates in which the students are
asked to take a posi on on given issues such as "Should school
have homework?" and "What me should kids go to bed?"
If this class is successful, our students won't list public speaking as
their #1 fear when they grow up! min 6/max 12

Students learn a kid‐friendly history of skyscrapers and create a
blueprint of their own stylized tall building. They then must weigh
other considera ons including environmental effects, traffic and
surrounding buildings as they use Google Earth to find the perfect
loca on for their project. Once their blueprint is finished, our
expert architects create a three‐dimensional Lego model of the
structure and deliver a presenta on to the "city council"

CONSERVATION
Stormwater and Land Disturbance CONSERVATION
Construction on a property may involve disturbing the land and creating new impervious surfaces such as driveways, building
additions and/or new buildings that may prevent water from being absorbed into the ground. Disturbed soils, if not properly
contained, can and do wash onto the property of others, into the Town’s drainage system and into sensitive natural areas.
Chapter 193 of the Town Code (Stormwater and Land Disturbance Bylaw), as administered by the Conservation Commission,
is intended to contain land disturbances and promote infiltration of runoff from new impervious surfaces. Linda Hansen
(508-358-3669) is available at the Conservation office to answer your questions or visit your property to help determine the
appropriate erosion control measures and drainage mitigation needed for your construction project.
Brian Harris is the part-time year-round Land Manager working for the Conservation Commission. During occasional
Saturdays in the fall, spring and summer, he will be available at Conservation areas as a resource for visitors and birders.
Please check the Conservation’s web page to see if an activity and date has been established. The Commission encourages
the use of conservation lands for various permitted activities from dawn to dusk. The Commission has embarked on an effort
to improve signs, mark boundaries, and address abuses of these special resources. All are welcome to explore and enjoy
these many areas and attend one of Brian’s Saturday activities.
Please visit the Conservation webpage on the Town of Wayland website to find our most up-to-date newsletter,
upcoming events, property information, and permitting requirements.
