Manypeopleaskthequestion:canwechangetheworld?MostChristianswillagreethatonlyGodcanchangetheworld.The question still remains: does this mean thatweshouldsitbackandevadeourresponsibility?WeknowthattheBibleguidesustobefaithfuldisciplesofJesus.WeknowthatGod’skingdomencompassesallofcreation.JesusChristisLordofeverysquareinchoftheuniverse.Thismeansthatdiscipleshiphastodowithalldimensionsoflife.Jesuscametotheearthtomakeadifferenceinarealworld.Discipleshipthereforepointstowardsresponsiblecitizenship.

KEYnOTE SESSiOnS AnD SPEAKERS

Day 1ThefirstdayfocusonourcallingtobebothfaithfuldisciplesofJesusandresponsiblecitizens.WelivesimultaneouslyinboththeChristocracy(Christgoverns)andademocracy(thepeoplegovern).AsfaithfuldisciplesandresponsiblecitizenswearecalledtowitnesswithindemocraciesaboutthetransformativeloveofGodfortheworld.

Day 3Thelastdayfocusesonthequestionofchangingtheworld.Canthechurchplayaroleinthis?Howcanwedefinethisrole?

Theconferencewillconsistofplenaryandparallelsessionswithampletimefordiscussion.ThepresentationswillbeprimarilyinEnglish,butparticipantsarewelcometomakecontributionsinAfrikaansorXhosa.

Participantswill:• chooseoneofthethemesforthemorningparallelsessionspresentedoverthreedays;• chooseoneoftheTuesdayafternoonparallelsessions;and• chooseoneoftheWednesdayafternoonparallelsessions.

P1 Season of human dignity

Bymakinguseofthreecasestudiesthesessionillustratesthewaysinwhichcongregationsmanagetoembracehumandignityinresponsetochallenges.Thefocus is on the effect on the culture of congregationsandonministerialpractice.Adeafministerandherhearingcolleaguesharetheirexperienceofcrossingboundariesbetweendeafandhearingintheircongregation.Congregations’involvementwiththeworkofCeaseFireillustratesthewaysinwhichtheysupporthumandignityinacultureofgangviolence.Acongregationsharesthechallengestheyface and the transformation they experience in their support and inclusion of people wholivewithHIV.

P2 Faithful discipleship and responsible citizenship in the Bible

Inthissession,membersoftheDepartmentofOldandNewTestamentwillexplorethethemeofFaithfulDiscipleshipandResponsibleCitizenshipintheOldand

NewTestament.Ondayone,theywillproposethatthenarroweddowntranslation of πίστιςas“belief”skewstheinterpretationofthePaulineletters.Insteaditwillbeproposedthatthisword-groupthat primarily denotes loyalty and fidelity, includingnotionsoftrust,confidenceandconvictionframestheJesusfollowers’relationshipwithGodaswellastheimperialcontextinsignificantways.Ondaytwo,theywillconsiderthefollowingquestion:Iffaithfuldiscipleshipandresponsiblecitizenshiphaveanythingtodowithpowerrelationsinfamiliestoday,istheEphesianshouseholdcode(withitspatriarchalgrainandcomplexhistoryofinterpretation)stillofanyuse?Andonthefinalday,theywillaskwhatresponsiblecitizenshipmeansinacontextofpowerstruggles,ofoppression,ofnewaspirations,andofnewidentitynegotiationaswitnessedinthebooksEzra-NehemiahandChronicles.

P3 Challenging inequalities in South Africa

SouthAfricaisoneofthemostunequalcountriesintheworldwithoneofthehighestginicoefficients(themeasuremostoftenusedtomeasureincomedistribution).Must the church merely accept this fact or canwedosomethingaboutthischallenge?Thisthemewillbediscussedfromthreedifferent perspectives: (1)Theologicalandcommunitydevelopmental perspective;

(2)Practitionerperspective;(3)Economicalperspective.

Weliveinayoungdemocracywithspecificproblemsandchallenges.SouthAfricancitizenscaneasilycriticisewhatthepoliticiansandbusinessleadersaredoing.Thequestionis:Whatcanthechurchdotohelpcitizenstakingresponsibilityintheirowncommunities?Everycitizendoesnothavepower,buteverycitizenhasinfluence.Three church leaders actively involved in thebroadercommunitywillsharetheirpointsofview.

Somechurchesandcongregationsstruggletoberelevantinaneverchangingworld.Threepeoplefromdifferentbackgroundsandchurchtraditionswillpresenttheirviewpointsonthequestionposedhere:(1)FromtheperspectiveofachurchleaderwithinthePentecostaltradition;(2)Fromtheperspectiveofapersonministeringthroughtheinternetandsocialmedia; (3)Fromtheperspectiveofayoungfemalepastorinamainlinechurch.

PS1 human Dignity and poverty: Preaching in order to empower people in a context of poverty

CanthepreachingthathappenseverySundayinchurch,reallyhelppoorpeople?Canitenablethemtolookdifferentlyatthemselvesandtheircontexts,empoweringthemtobecomeagentsofchange?Thisworkshopwillhelpyoutolookcriticallyatthepreachingofthechurch,insearchofproclamationthatgiveshope,thataddressesinjusticesinsocietyandthatbringsthegoodnewsoftheGospelincontactwiththerealsituationofpeople’slives.

PS2 The Church as agent of child protection and development

CaringforchildrenisamajorpartofthemandatedtheologyoftheChristianfaith.Churchesarewellawareoftheissuesfacingchildren,butareoftenill-equippedto adequately address them, despite theirbestandoftensacrificialefforts.TheChildren’sActisthelegalframeworkforanyone involved in the care, development andprotectionofchildren.Howeverthekeytoanylawisitsimplementation.Oftenchurchesdonotknowwhatthelawentailsand fail to put even the bare minimum in place to ensure the adequate protection

ofchildren.ThisworkshopprovidesanoverviewoftheChildren’sActandotherrelevantlegislation,asthedifferentlawsrelate to church and community-based work.

Theworkshopwillfollowaweekinthelifeofachurchpastor,observinghowhis/herworkintersectswithchildren,thestruggleshe/shefacesandtheexcitementandpossibilityhe/sheseesforpromotingchildprotectionandwell-beingthroughtheworkofhischurch.Relevantlegalpointswillbehighlightedalongtheway.

PS3 Missional congregations

Faithfuldiscipleswillmakeadifferenceintheworld.GodcallscongregationstobemissionalbecauseinhisverynatureHeismissional.Thissessionwillfocusontheprinciplesonwhichmissionalcongregationsarebased.Thesessionwillincludethestoriesoftwocongregationsindifferentcommunities,inspiringparticipantstobemoremissional.

JamesK.A.SmithdescribesliturgyasaplacewherewereceiveavisionofGod’sReign,nurturethedesiretoseeGod’sReignmanifestamongus,andlearnthehabits that enable us to live as true citizens ofGod’sReign.ThismeansthatworshipisnotjustanexpressiveactivityinwhichweproclaimourloveanddevotiontoGod.ItisatransformingactivityinwhichwebecomeincreasinglyChristlike.

Thissessionwillexplorehowliturgycanfunction as a primary means of discipleship inourchurches,andwillprovidepracticalguidelinesforplanningandfacilitatingdisciple-makingworshipservices.

PS7 Discipleship in youth ministry

Thissessionwillpayattentiontoatleastthree areas in order to stimulate discussion on the theme of discipleship in youth ministry,namely:(1)Theologicalreflectionisneededwithregardstowhotheyouthis;(2)Youthministryneedstheologicalfoundations - it is not a social club; (3)Youthministrycouldassistthechurchtobecontextualandrelevantinchancingcontexts.

Wehearthecriestoday:“Showmethemoney!”“Paybackthemoney!”“It’sallabouttheeconomy,stupid!”“Followthemoney!” “Money talks!” These are not only the cries of our times but also the cries of theHebrewprophetsofold,thecriesofJesusandtheGospelwriters.TheBibleisfirst and foremost an economics text book andthereinliesthehealingandsalvationoftheworld.Thissessionwillfocusontherelationshipbetweendiscipleship,stewardshipandresponsiblecitizenship.

PS8 Multi-cultural congregations

Weliveinadiversecountrywithvariousdifferent cultures, but unfortunately manycongregationsdonotreflectthisdiversity.Thissessionwillhelpparticipantstoembracediversityincongregationsandexperiencetherichvaluethereof.The presenters started a multi-cultural congregationintheCapeFlatsandtheirstorywillencourageotherchurchleaderswhowanttotransformtheircongregationsandcommunities.

PS9 The coaching and mentoring of pastors and other church leaders

Mostthoughtfulleadersareawareofthevalueofhavingcompanionsonthejourneyoflife.ManyleadersintheChurchare accompanied by spiritual companions ordirectorsorcoaches.Thechallengeisrootedinwhothesementorsare,whattheydointheircompanionship,andhowtheyprocessthe“stuffoflife”thatemerges.Thissessionseekstogiveinsightsintothisprocess.
