WelcomeWelcome to our new bi-annual guide to what’s on at St Barbe. It’s more than six months since we re-opened the doors after our refurbishment, and the new spaces and facilities are working brilliantly.

The interactive-rich museum tells the story of Lymington and the surrounding area in a fresh and accessible way that’s great for children and adults. The art galleries continue to show exhibitions of national significance as well as the best of local art. Now, better equipped than ever the gallery is one of the best on the South Coast.

You’ll see from this brochure that the next six months are packed with activities for all ages. Add in the King Research Room, Old School Café, Information Service, and the wonderful gift shop, there have never been more reasons to visit St Barbe.

“At the outbreak of war the government were far-sighted in

appointing ‘war artists’ … The works I have gathered are all by either

professionals, some well-known, or ‘gifted-amateurs’, trained artists,

often teachers in schools or colleges, some actually in one of the services,

each capturing in a unique way a moment from their lives.”

Springlines: Mary Anne Aytoun-Ellis and Clare Best20 April - 10 June 2018

Springlines is a collaborative project between poet Clare Best and painter Mary Anne Aytoun-Ellis, exploring hidden and mysterious bodies of water across the south of England. For several years Clare and Mary Anne have been working from nature, from memory and imagination and in response to one another’s creativity. Together they have made a body of work that tells the story of the complex and fragile relationship between human life, surface water and groundwater. The exhibition features paintings by Mary Anne and poetry by Clare based on their explorations in Sussex, Kent and the New Forest as well as relevant items from the museum’s local collections.

Page 9: Winter Spring 2018 - St. Barbe · Guide dogs welcome LARGE Exhibition labels in large print PRINT . Welcome Welcome to our new bi-annual guide to what’s on at St Barbe. It’s more

Clare Best studied at the University of Cambridge and took an MA in Creative Writing at the University of Sussex. A widely published poet and writer, she has received many awards (including from ACE and The Authors’ Foundation). Her first full collection Excisions (2011) was shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney Centre Prize.

Mary Anne Aytoun-Ellis studied at the Ruskin School of Fine Art (University of Oxford) and at the Royal College of Art. She is represented by London’s prestigious Portland Gallery and has exhibited previously at St Barbe as a member of the Arborealists. Her work is collected internationally.

Exhibitions Coming Up Later This Year

Dazzle: Disguise and Disruption in War and Art16 June - 23 September 2018

The use of Dazzle patterning on warships was introduced during the First World War, not to help ships blend in with their surroundings, but to confuse U-Boat commanders as to the direction and speed of the vessels.

This exhibition, curated by art historian James Taylor, will be based around paintings, prints and drawings by artists such as Wilkinson, Wadsworth, and Montague Dawson, many on loan from the Imperial War Museum, National Maritime Museum and British Museum.

Allen William Seaby and John Edgar Platt: Colour Woodcuts29 September - 25 November 2018

A unique exhibition based around two of the greatest exponents of colour woodcut prints: Allen William Seaby (1867-1953) a regular visitor to the New Forest, and John Edgar Platt (1886-1967) in partnership with the artists’ estates.

The exhibition will also look at the workings of the artistic gene in the paintings of Platt’s son Michael and the prints of Seaby’s grandson Robert Gillmor.

Coast1 December 2018 - 13 January 2019

The first of a series of invited artist exhibitions to be held in the new galleries which bring together leading contemporary artists working in a range of media to explore their responses to a common theme. For the first exhibition we naturally look to the coast: its atmosphere, landscapes, wildlife, industries and inhabitants. A complementary local history exhibition in gallery 3 also celebrates the history of the New Forest coast, focussing on some of the maps held in the St Barbe collection and supplemented with contemporary paintings, photographs and postcards. This will be a selling exhibition.

Volunteers play a vital roleSt Barbe relies on the efforts of more than 100 volunteers, with more than half of them working on the reception desk and undertaking gallery steward duties every day of the week. This area of work is known as front of house. Reception volunteers handle admissions and shop sales, and purchases of an annual admissions pass that provides membership of the Friends of St Barbe scheme.Volunteers also provide a helpful tourist information service, which is particularly popular in the main holiday season. Gallery stewards have a two-fold function – the security of the museum displays and art gallery exhibits, and the enhancement of the visitor experience by answering questions and discussing what the visitor enjoys most.Other volunteers are involved in collection data input, local history research, caring for the collections, education and family events, as well as hanging the exhibitions. Some volunteers work regular weekly shifts, while others choose to help when needed. They share a wide range of skills and experience with St Barbe, which is a great benefit to the organisation, and of course the volunteers enjoy working in a team and making new friends.

Anyone interested in voluntary work at St Barbe can email [email protected] or call in for an application form.
