Winter storms can have a signifi cant impact on our landscapes. Trees can be damaged by high winds, heavy snow, ice and other severe weather. Some damage will require immediate attention while others may be dealt with at a later time. A good rule of thumb is to inspect trees after severe storms even if they look healthy. Damage may not be visible to the untrained eye.
Did you know healthy trees which have been regularly maintained are better prepared to withstand severe weather?
One of the best ways to preserve your landscape and reduce risk is by having an arborist inspect your trees and shrubs regularly. These inspections represent a proactive approach to tree and shrub care, rather than a reactive one.

Want Healthier Trees?Arbor Green PRO® 30-10-07 is an excellent way to protect the long-term health and beauty of your trees and shrubs. Applied by a very clean, non-disturbing injection method into the root zone area, Arbor Green PRO® works with nature to grow healthier foliage and improve soil structure.
Arbor Green PRO®’s gradual, slow-release formulation strengthens the root system to make landscape plants more vigorous andresistant to damaging diseases, insects and drought conditions. The slower, controlled release rate leads to more uniform growth, a lower risk of leaching and improved effi ciency of nutrient absorption. It also has a low salt index to prevent burning of delicate roots, which means that even the most sensitive trees and shrubs (such as those under stress from drought) can be fertilized.
What’s in a Number?Have you ever wondered how to decipher the numbers on a bag of fertilizer?
Davey Arbor Green PRO® 30-10-0730-NitrogenA major component of chlorophyll which is the compound where plants use sunlight energy to produce sugars from water andcarbon dioxide which creates the process of photosynthesis. This is what provides the healthy lush green color and uniform size to the plants foliage.
10-PhosphorusRegulates protein synthesis and is important in cell division and thedevelopment of new tissue which strengthens the cell wall to help with protection and recovery from injury due to drought and other stresses.
07-PotassiumAn essential nutrient for plant growth. It is absorbed through the roots which helps with strong root development which in turnprovides a healthy uptake of nutrients to the entire tree.
DIFFERENCECORRECTWRONG
Much Ado About MulchMan may be a dog’s best friend, but a newly planted tree’s best friend is mulch. Why? Mulching not only adds visual appeal to your landscape, but it also helps protect trees.
Surrounding the tree’s base with a 1 to 3-inch depth of mulch:• Insulates the soil helping to provide a buffer from heat and cold• Retains water to help keep roots moist• Keeps weeds out to help prevent root competition• Reduces lawn mower damage to a tree’s trunk
Remember, never place mulch closer than 2 to 3 inches from the trunk to prevent rotting.
Spring is a great time to get outside and reacquaint your tree with its best friend.
The excess mulch can be used to cover and protect at least three additional trees. Over-mulching is costly, both for the material and the price you pay when correcting the damage it causes to trees and shrubs.
At Davey, not only are we committed to keeping your trees healthy, but we’re also dedicated to protecting and preserving our environment. The materials used to produce this newsletter are FSC® certifi ed. FSC certifi cation guarantees that products come from well-managed forests and other responsible sources.
