We Celebrate a Milestone for the Arts

25 Years at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts In 2014, we have been celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, a place where art matters. First a word of explanation: by “we” I mean the tenants at the Center who make things happen on a daily basis, along with our landlord, Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana. Tenants include the Northwest Indiana Symphony, South Shore Arts, Theatre at the Center, the Munster Chamber of Commerce and Trama Catering.

Over the past 25 years, Community Hospital and Community Foundation have contributed more than $20 million to build and support the Center and underwrite a significant portion of the theatre’s operation. This extraordinary gift (has Northwest Indiana ever seen a greater one from a private entity?) has provided the people with opportunities to be exposed to new ideas and experiences, to be creative, to enjoy healthy, fuller lives. Not only did they construct a building, but they created an infrastructure where the arts could grow and be sustained.

Credit goes to Donald Powers for his vision to create this home for the arts. Margo and Don Powers have also been very generous patrons of all of the organizations within the Center, and by doing so have helped to make the Center a cultural designation. We also recognize

William J. Bachman, the architect for the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, who was instrumental in advocating for and helping to develop the Center with Mr. Powers.

And let us not forget the countless artists of all types who exhibit, perform, teach and learn at the Center, as well as the multitudes of people who participate in myriad ways: as observers, audiences, appreciators, volunteers and donors—many more than would otherwise have done so had it not been for the ingenious combination of for-profit and non-profit activities that occur all under one roof. People who come to brunch on Sunday or a corporate event on Monday or a wedding the following weekend, all have the chance to enjoy the arts.

Today, people in our region understand more than ever how art matters to their community. But it was the opening of the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in 1989 that first alerted people to this notion. Never before had such a center existed. Symphony operated out of a storefront in Whiting and South Shore Arts out of the side entrance (not even a storefront) of a building on Calumet Avenue. Theatre at the Center, our region’s only full-time professional theatre, didn’t exist.

This building made people take notice of the arts, and the arts have been recognized as the foremost enhancement to our region’s quality of life ever since. A few years later, similar centers opened at Valparaiso University and in Michigan City at the Lubeznik Center—all impressive facilities that make Northwest Indiana a much better place to live. Thanks to talented artists, creative arts organizations and generous and enthusiastic arts patrons, the arts are thriving in our region; but these buildings are the visible anchors for the arts.

South Shore Arts is thrilled with the level of enthusiasm for recent exhibits. At our Crown Point location, Roller Derby: Works by Kevin Hanusin drew many new visitors, including some of the roller derby skaters, who were the artist’s inspiration for the series, and who were available for autographs.

At Substation No. 9, Touch. No Touch. Burn. Repeat. Emerging Artists of Northwest Indiana drew the largest crowd we’ve seen in years at our Hammond location. As an exciting change of pace, the exhibit included live music, walls covered in printmaking posters, video art and, of course, a body of exploratory work created by six up-and-coming artists. Pictured above are exhibiting artists Richard Contreras, Keith Bond, Veronica Napoli, Eric Roldan and Jeffrey Brink.

With the opening of the 71st Annual Salon Show on September 14, 2014, we not only celebrated 25 years in the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, but also the 25th anniversary of the Helen V. Surovek Memorial Award.

Concurrent with opening of the Center in 1989, CVPA architect and South Shore Arts founder William J. Bachman approached Palm Beach art dealer John Surovek, a Hammond native, with the idea of serving as juror for the annual show. The Surovek brothers, John and Tom, and Tom’s wife Judy, the latter both Hammond residents, wanted to remember their mother in a perpetual way, so, as Tom says, “it fell together.” The award started at the $1,500 level but presently grew to $2,000 the second year.

Mrs. Surovek was born in Sugar Creek, Missouri, in 1915 as Helen Virginia Diesko to John and Cecilia Diesko. She married Thomas Surovek in 1939 with three children following, Tom in 1940, Helen in 1943 and John in 1946.

Mrs. Surovek was active in the Democratic Party, serving as Deputy Sheriff of the Lake County Hammond office. Tom remembers an incident in the 1970s, when his mother, along with a group of other female deputy sheriffs acting as clerks, backed the losing candidate in a primary election, after which they were fired by the incoming Sheriff.

The ladies sued as they were not part of management and should have been exempt from the “spoils” doctrine. Over time, the others were offered and accepted positions

other than those they had held, but Mrs. Surovek did not and vowed to carry on until a favorable decision was reached. When finally resolved, all were vindicated, including Mrs. Surovek, and got back their old jobs. As a result, county employees who are not management can safely support the candidate of their choice without fear of loss of position.

The Helen V. Surovek prize represents 25 years of generosity on the part of Judy & Tom Surovek and their family who have not only supported the award for so many years, but have guaranteed that it will be sustained in perpetuity through the establishment of a South Shore Arts endowment fund designated for this purpose. We thank you for your decades of loyal support!

Contemporary artists have often questioned ideas about art-making practices by introducing new subjects, media and approaches to making art. During the 20th century, artists have challenged traditional ideas about sculpture by exploring their environment and the objects discarded within them as an integral part of the work itself.

Two Chicago area artists, Sarah Barnhart Fields and Sharon Gilmore, have done just that. By incorporating a dramatic use of materials and objects, the artists focus on the natural environment, its processes and the tools used to work the land. Sarah brings remnants of a rural culture back to life by reclaiming shovels or other found tools and uses them to create unique sculptural expressions of herself and her life. Sharon, in a similar yet more spiritual approach, engages the earth as a sculptural medium, transforming soil into sacred vessels. The two will be featured in a joint exhibit at South Shore Arts, February 8 through April 12, 2015. A reception for the artists will be held on Sunday, March 1, from 1-3pm.

Sharon Gilmore’s artwork reflects a respect for nature and ideas of sustainability. Her works incorporate salvaged objects alongside elements of nature such as twigs and

branches. They are playful and engaging while at the same time fragile and mysterious.

“My sculptures are rooted in themes of birth, death and transformation,” she says. “I use materials salvaged from nature and industry: objects that allude to archetypal animal, human or plant forms.”

Sarah Barnhart Fields, a painter for most of her life, began creating sculpture with found and discarded materials about five years ago.

“In a barn close to my studio,” she says, “There were lots of rusty old farm tools and parts of farm equipment. I took an old shovel and thought, now what can I do to this to make it a unique piece of art? How can I manipulate it to make it an expression of who I am yet still retain its shovelness? I wanted to push the boundaries of this shovel as far as I could.”

Both artists have found that the object is key to inspiring the work and that inventiveness is necessary to transforming the object into a sculpture. Together, their work speaks of reclaiming the discarded and transcending the boundaries of the everyday into powerful works of art.

As if educators do not have enough daily challenges, it seems that there is always a new hurdle to jump. Funding concerns, changing academic standards, and standardized testing are the topic of discussion more than the academics themselves. Buzzwords, rather, buzz acronyms like STEM and STEAM are dotting the educational landscape. Schools across the nation have adopted a new tech approach, and cross-curricular teaching is increasingly a requirement of classroom teachers.

Many of these issues, especially funding cuts for the arts, have led to increased pressure for teachers to begin integrating the arts into their curriculum. South Shore Arts is sensitive to these issues. For the past five years, we have presented the Arts Education Resource Fair, a free event for educators. The primary focus of this event is to offer a professional opportunity for educators and administrators, including homeschool educators.

This year’s theme, Creative Classrooms: Art Integration Using Classroom Materials, was selected because not all teachers have the financial resources to invest in specialized art supplies. All of the hands-on workshops used materials found in most traditional classrooms. One workshop titled Arcs and Angles: Frank Stella used protractors, compasses and French curves to create abstract compositions in the manner of the Minimalist artist. The lesson plan for this workshop adhered both to visual art and math standards and also included supplemental information on how to make this lesson adaptable from elementary through high school.

Attendees received a resource packet with lesson plans from the workshops along with additional cross-curricular lesson plans, information on local arts resources, articles on arts integration and an activity book with art ideas. They also received a certificate for the Professional Growth Plan (PGP) points they earned by participating in the event. These points are important to educators as they are required for teacher license renewal. This was all provided at no cost to the attendees and funded partially though a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission and private donations.

The Art Education Resource Fair includes workshops, information booths, a luncheon and educational take-away materials. This year, we expanded the event by holding it in two locations, the Center for the Visual and Performing Arts in Munster and the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City. The added venue created larger outreach to area educators, some attending from as far away as the western Chicago suburbs and southern Michigan.

South Shore Arts’ outreach programming goes beyond the parameters of educational settings. Our community investment continues through our involvement and participation in local events from Bizarre Bazaar in Harrison Park in Hammond to the annual Pumpkin Walk in downtown Crown Point. Serving our communities is central to the mission of South Shore Arts, but being a part of our communities is the core.

Outreach is an important part of our organization, and we are excited about a new partnership with the Bernard Kleiman JOBLINK Learning Center to provide arts programming for employees at ArcelorMittal and USW Local 1010. We are also happy to be continuing our longest partnership with the School City of Hammond, Title 1, in providing the arts component to its Parents and Children Together (PACT) program.

The Northwest Indiana Symphony’s recent Stargazing Concert was performed to a sold-out house of over 900 patrons who attended the evening concert at Bethel Church in Crown Point on Friday, October 24. Three days earlier, an audience of nearly 6,000 students and teachers enjoyed some of the same music at the annual Children’s Education Concerts at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville.

The three concerts featured Dr. José Francisco Salgado, an astronomer and visual artist from the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, who brought real planetary images to life through verbal descriptions, photographs and film footage that was artistically choreographed to accompany Gustav Holst’s The Planets. Throughout the program, Dr. Salgado explained historical and recently discovered planetary phenomena that appeared in the film.

For area teachers and students of all ages, the concerts provided curriculum connections between science and music through space exploration brought vividly to life. Hand in hand with the concert, pre-concert docent presentations served students in their classrooms.

With the retirement of several loyal ushers from our volunteer corps, Symphony staff reached out to new organizations with requests for volunteers and successfully identified 78 individuals who acted as parking assistants, crossing guards, group escorts, greeters and ushers.

The Symphony extends sincere thanks to ArcelorMittal retirees, Beta Rho Chapter of Tri-Kappa, the Lake County Retired Teachers

Association, the Women’s Association of Northwest Indiana Symphony Society, Delta Kappa Gamma Teaching Society, Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity, Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus, Griffith High School Band, Highland Community Band and the School City of Hammond Junior ROTC corps, as well as other non-affiliated friends. Together, these individuals provided a total of 312 volunteer hours to assure that the children who attended the concerts moved safely from their buses and back so that their entire experience was truly rewarding.

Opening Concert Gala Sponsors

The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra launched its 73rd season with Music of Motown, an Opening Concert and Gala held at the Radisson Hotel and Star Plaza Theatre on Friday, September 12, 2014. Guest artists The Motown Experience had concertgoers dancing in the aisles with high-energy choreography, impeccable harmonies and perfect orchestration. The music, some of the most popular of the 20th century, included hits like My Girl, The Way You Do the Things You Do, Ain’t That Peculiar, Heat Wave, Dancing in the Street, I’ll Be There and Do You Love Me?

Indiana University Northwest was the evening’s Presenting Sponsor. The Gala raises money every year to benefit the music and education programs of the Symphony, the Northwest Indiana Youth Orchestra and the Symphony Chorus. Guests gathered for delicious food and drink at the Radisson Hotel before the concert at the Star Plaza Theatre. A post concert dessert and champagne reception capped off the evening with Maestro Muspratt, members of the orchestra and The Motown Experience signing autographs and posing for pictures.

With the opening of the new season, the Symphony expressed gratitude to Indiana University Northwest

for many years of devoted generosity and support. IUN’s commitment to enhancing Northwest Indiana’s cultural awareness and appreciation for the arts is reflected by its departments of Fine Arts and Performing Arts led by renowned faculty, as well as the campus’ Gallery for Contemporary Art, Theatre Northwest on Grant, and the Shadows & Echoes sculpture garden.

With an anticipated opening of 2017, IUN’s commitment to arts will be strengthened by a new, state-of-the-art $45 million Arts and Sciences building, to be located on the campus at 35th Avenue and Broadway. A cornerstone of the building will be a 500-seat performing arts venue and a smaller “black box” theater. The new building will provide studio space to enhance learning in various media and will include a dedicated gallery.

At IU Northwest, a distinct honor derives from the campus’s partnership with IU, home to the nationally respected Jacobs School of Music, long a bastion of excellence in music education.

Mark your calendars for next year’s Opening Concert and Gala on Friday, September 25, 2015!
