A RECOGNITION OF SERVICE

Congratulations to the 2015 Crystal Ball award winner, Connie Mandula!

This award is presented every year to someone who has gone above and beyond to help OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and the OSF St. Joseph Foundation.

Connie co-chaired the successful 2014 Crystal Ball Boots and Diamonds, which raised significant donations for the new Hybrid Operating Room as well as new radiation safety devices for our staff. She is also a very generous and active founding member of Women Empowered, a women’s giving circle of the OSF St. Joseph Foundation aimed to fund and champion women’s services at OSF St. Joseph.

“Connie has been supportive of the Foundation in so many ways and continues to look for more opportunities to help,” said Jennifer Sedbrook, Director of Philanthropy for the OSF Foundation’s Eastern Region. “She is very generous with her time and expertise.”

There are many places in our community where one can volunteer, but there is something special about serving through

a hospital. “At some point in our life, we have all needed a hospital,” Connie Mandula said. “OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and the Foundation provide care and services to a large portion of our community so we can feel safe and comfortable while being treated locally. It is important we help to continue having a reliable health care provider so close to home.”

As a local business owner, Connie has a great entrepreneurial skillset, which she readily volunteers within her community. While owning CM Promotions, a promotional distribution company, Connie is active on numerous committees and provides product and financial donations to many local not-for-profit organizations.

“We are grateful Connie uses her time and skills to help benefit the OSF St. Joseph Foundation,” said Kimberly Weeks, Donor Relations Associate. “She continuously strives to turn ideas into a reality, and we appreciate her drive and passion for OSF St. Joseph.”

After receiving this award, Connie said, “When you support an organization or group in the community, you hope your contributions make a difference towards their goal. I feel very grateful and humbled to think that what I have done has made an impact at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and the Foundation.”

If you are interested in joining Women Empowered or helping the OSF St. Joseph Foundation, please call Jennifer Sedbrook at (309) 665-4901.

Not many people can say they made it 87 years before needing to stay overnight in a hospital. However, on a Wednesday in April, Chuck Whitacre was not feeling well and struggled to lift the boxes of food he routinely took to the local food pantry. By Thursday morning, there was no mistaking he needed medical attention so he went to OSF St. Joseph Medical Center.

The medical team determined Chuck was bleeding internally. He decided if he was blessed to be able to live through the experience, he wanted to do something to thank each and every one of the nurses and physicians who saved his life. For most people, saying “thank you” involves a card, but Chuck wanted to give back. “I wanted to give everyone who cared for me something as a token of my appreciation. The very loving care they gave me was more than their job required,” Chuck explained. “There wasn’t anyone who was obtrusive or negative. And in spite of the way I was acting, they all treated me like I was a real gentleman. I was just impressed with everyone I met, from the very beginning until I left.”

SAYING ‘THANK YOU’ WITH SOFA SERVERS

EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE

Page 5: WINTER/SPRING 2016 - OSF HealthCare · Bloomington, IL 61704 (309) 664-3120. Morgan Massey, APN OSF Medical Group – ... we appreciate her drive and passion for OSF St. Joseph.”

“I’ve always thought you should treat people like you want to be treated. And the staff at OSF St. Joseph treated me like I was their father, or grandfather, or great-grandfather” Chuck said. His wife, Helen, agreed saying, “They were right there and were very helpful – always checking to see what else they could do. If you have to be in a hospital, OSF St. Joseph is the one to be in.”

Chuck has been building furniture since 1977, and owns a family business in Hudson. “In spite of all the furniture I have built for my wife, the piece she likes best is the sofa server,” Chuck said. A sofa server is a little wooden table that slides over a couch and can be used to hold anything from food to laptops. To say “thank you,” Chuck made 45, one for each of the staff members who cared for him as well as the paramedics who took him to the hospital and visitors who came during his stay.

“There’s just something special about OSF St. Joseph,” Helen said. From the devoted nurses to a therapy dog who came to visit, everyone worked together to provide the best care possible. Chuck said when he received his survey from the hospital, he could have given every subject a triple A.

“One thing I think about all the time when I’m at the food pantry, is if just one person gives thanks to God for one random act of kindness, in that occasion you’ve been successful,” Chuck said. The acts of kindness Chuck experienced in the hospital, where staff went above and beyond their job description to administer care with love, were so touching he was driven to produce his own random act of kindness in return.

EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE

Page 6: WINTER/SPRING 2016 - OSF HealthCare · Bloomington, IL 61704 (309) 664-3120. Morgan Massey, APN OSF Medical Group – ... we appreciate her drive and passion for OSF St. Joseph.”

TAMI CLARKTami Clark and her dog, Polar Bear, are a part of Karing Partners, an animal-assisted therapy program at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. For more than three years, Tami and Polar Bear have made a difference in patient experiences at the hospital by bringing comfort with their visits.

Every therapy dog and handler completes training and testing to become a certified therapy dog team. All the time and effort put into the certification is worth it when they hear how grateful people are; Tami is often told her visits with Polar Bear made a patient’s day. Therapy dogs can aid in patient recovery by helping to reduce stress, anxiety or pain. Including therapy dogs at a hospital is a win-win situation for animals and people alike.

“Volunteering is very rewarding and beneficial not only to others, but to yourself as well,” she said. “It is a small thing that can have a huge impact.”

JIM JOHNSONSince starting his volunteer work at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Jim Johnson has volunteered in the Emergency Department, Outpatient Services, and as a transport. In each of these areas, he learned something new. “I’m currently working at the Eastland Medical Plaza I reception desk, and I enjoy the interaction with our medical center guests,” he said. People are very appreciative of someone being there to provide directions or help with any other assistance they might need.

“As a volunteer, I’m mindful that I might very well be the first person a patient or visitor has contact with upon arriving at OSF St. Joseph, and in many cases, the last to see them off when they leave,” he said. “I believe first impressions are lasting impressions, and I play an important role in the patient’s expectations of how they will be treated during their visit.”

Jim believes that anyone who enjoys interacting with others in a positive way, enjoys giving a smile to those who may be feeling some apprehension about their hospital visit, or is looking for a way to help others should become a volunteer at OSF St. Joseph. “I treasure the friendships I’ve made with other volunteers and staff members,” he said.

VOLUNTEER STORIES

Page 7: WINTER/SPRING 2016 - OSF HealthCare · Bloomington, IL 61704 (309) 664-3120. Morgan Massey, APN OSF Medical Group – ... we appreciate her drive and passion for OSF St. Joseph.”

ANDY LABROOAndy Labroo began volunteering at OSF St. Joseph over a year ago during his sophomore year of college. He volunteers in the Emergency Department, where he visits patients and helps the staff members. “This volunteer experience has been nothing but rewarding for me,” he said. “I gain valuable experience every day, and enjoy my time at OSF St. Joseph. I now have a greater appreciation of the everyday good deeds of volunteers, medical staff, and all hospital employees.”

The opportunity to regularly be part of a setting where he hopes to work one day is one of the many benefits of volunteering at OSF St. Joseph. “I believe volunteering has made me a more well-rounded individual,” he said. “I see the challenges many people face, and how they are able to overcome those challenges with help from the people around them. It has exposed me to situations I can learn from.”

Andy highly recommends volunteering. “No matter the reason for volunteering, you can learn a lot and enjoy doing it at the same time,” he said.

CATHY McFADINAs a recent retiree, Cathy McFadin decided to use her extra time trying new things and began volunteering at OSF St. Joseph in October. As a new volunteer, she is impressed with how many years other volunteers have dedicated at the hospital. “I can see why they have been here so long,” she said. “OSF St. Joseph does good things, and it feels good to support the hospital’s goals.”

Cathy delivers mail throughout the medical center. “I look forward to the day I volunteer,” she said. “I feel like I provide a valuable service to OSF St. Joseph and feel appreciated by the staff.”

Cathy recommends volunteering as a way to help other people and make a definite and positive difference. “Volunteering at OSF St. Joseph lets me see how OSF puts the patient first and tries to make a hospital visit as positive as possible,” she said.

RACHAEL PLANTHOLTRachael Plantholt wanted to gain experience in a hospital setting before applying to medical school. She applied to become a volunteer at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and has been volunteering at the hospital twice a week for over a year now. On Mondays, Rachael is in the Birthing Center as an administrative aide. On Thursdays, she helps with patient education. “The work is rewarding and the people are a joy,” she said. “I am also able to watch patient education videos, which helps me learn more about the amazing human body.”

One experience that stands out to Rachael happened a few months after she began volunteering at OSF St. Joseph. A nurse in the Birthing Center asked her to watch a young boy who was about to become a big brother and had no one to wait with him while his parents were in the delivery room.

After agreeing to help, she realized they had a language barrier, as the 2-year-old only spoke Hindi. However, Rachael and the young boy got along splendidly, playing all sorts of games and watching the snow fall from the window. “I love to share this story not only because I had a good experience, but because it proves it’s possible for two people to communicate no matter how different they are,” she said.

MARIANA SALDANAMariana Saldana moved to Bloomington from Mexico City with her husband for his job this past year. She volunteers not only to help staff members and patients at OSF St. Joseph, but also to help the non-English speaking Latino community that receives care at OSF St. Joseph. “It’s not always easy to find fluent Spanish speaking people to assist you when you need it,” she said. “Volunteering at OSF St. Joseph has been a great opportunity to help those around me while also improving my English.”

Mariana volunteers in Occupational Health, the Surgicenter, the Birthing Center lobby, and with other special projects. “The amazing staff and the good volunteer program make me feel like I belong to a large professional and caring family,” she said. “I feel very proud every time I receive kudos for my excellent work and performance.”

OSF St. Joseph allows Mariana, a believer in giving back and volunteering, to share in the caring community found in Bloomington-Normal.

ANN WOODSIDEThe family tradition of volunteering in hospitals began with Ann Woodside’s parents and continues through her and her son. For more than four years, Ann has volunteered at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center as a front desk receptionist and transporter. “My favorite conversations with patients are the wonderful stories they tell about their nurses,” Ann said. “I hear numerous compliments each week about how much patients appreciate the personalized care they received. We have the best nurses working at OSF St. Joseph!”

Ann said she loves experiencing the passion and dedication the doctors and nurses show toward their patients. “I now have a deeper appreciation of the work medical professionals do beyond the actual procedures they perform or prescriptions they write,” she said. “And by volunteering my time, I contribute to OSF by helping to provide quality health care to our patients.”

More than 135 years ago, a group of five sisters and their leader, Mother M. Frances Krasse, came to Bloomington from Peoria to care for the sick and poor, ill and injured. When OSF St. Joseph Hospital received its first patient on March 22, 1880, it became the first in a series of mission hospitals to be owned and operated by The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis. Guided by the call from God and their faith, the Sisters gave loving care to each person they served. The last words of Mother M. Frances Krasse inspired the Mission of Sisters past and present when she said, “Nurse the sick with the greatest care and love, then will God’s blessings be with you.”

FAITH, HOPE, AND HEALING

Page 10: WINTER/SPRING 2016 - OSF HealthCare · Bloomington, IL 61704 (309) 664-3120. Morgan Massey, APN OSF Medical Group – ... we appreciate her drive and passion for OSF St. Joseph.”

Today this call to serve continues to inspire service and is extended to more than 17,000 OSF HealthCare employees, who are referred to as Mission Partners. “When individuals not only know the right thing to do in the care of others, but also know why they are serving – answering a call to serve human life in the spirit of Christ – it can make a tremendous difference in all that is accomplished,” said Sister Judith Ann Duvall, O.S.F., Major Superior and OSF HealthCare Board Chairperson. “We come to serve, not to be served. That is the spirit of Christ.”

In Matthew 25, Christ counsels his apostles to serve others as He said, “As you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” At OSF HealthCare, we apply this principle into our daily interactions as we work to be Christ-like with every person we serve.

“We see each Mission Partner as being called by God to share with our Sisters in this Sacred Ministry; and we could not accomplish all we do without them,” Sister Judith Ann said. Caregiving is a selfless vocation no matter where the service is given. By incorporating faith into OSF HealthCare, it promotes an enhanced passion, pride, and importance of service to our Mission Partners as they make the Mission of OSF HealthCare their own. “There is tremendous satisfaction in being able to impact people’s lives, and this is unique to health care,” said Chad Boore, president of OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. “Our Mission Partners understand that. They are keenly aware of what they are called to do, to offer care and compassion to patients when they are most vulnerable – to serve all in the spirit of Christ.”

Helping our patients does not need to stop with physical ailments. Spiritual and mental healing are also important aspects of healthy, balanced living. With our pastoral team, we work to provide for the total well-being of those we serve. It is important to realize many things that don’t deal directly with medicine can influence patients’ health. “When we care for a person in need of our services, that care is only complete when we take into account the family that surrounds that individual,” said Sister Judith Ann. “That is why population-based, community-based care planning and delivery makes all the sense in the world. To care for the whole person means caring about all that person is, which, of course, includes those most important to them, their family and loved ones.” At OSF St. Joseph, our patients can see their friends and family members whenever they want – not just during set visiting hours. We have pastoral team members available to our patients for additional comfort and support. We also work hard to address needs in our community to ensure our care reaches as many people as possible.

We come to serve, not to be served. That is the spirit of Christ.

Page 11: WINTER/SPRING 2016 - OSF HealthCare · Bloomington, IL 61704 (309) 664-3120. Morgan Massey, APN OSF Medical Group – ... we appreciate her drive and passion for OSF St. Joseph.”

OSF HealthCare is not simply a business, but a sacred ministry. “We notice, but are not motivated by, the market share, nor are we only focused on enhancing our bottom line, even though stewardship does entail, to some degree, the careful and responsible management of our properties, finances, and resources,” Sister Judith Ann said. “But instead we focus on being faithful to what God asks of us.” While honoring and respecting other religions, we press forward with the divine calling to serve with God’s presence and influence. That’s why we invite ministers, priests, and leaders of other faiths to come together to help us care for the spiritual well-being of our patients. That support from the faith community is an important and strengthening touch to OSF HealthCare that is not found in many other health care settings.

Although the Sisters do not regularly grace the halls of OSF St. Joseph, their influence of love and serving is embodied in each Mission Partner. “That same powerful presence of being living extensions of Christ can and should live in the hearts, words, and actions of all our OSF Mission Partners,” Sister Judith Ann said.

Nurturing the mental, physical and spiritual aspects of health is one of the privileges of being in Catholic health care. Our mission isn’t just words on paper at OSF HealthCare; it guides everything we do.

In the Spirit of Christ and the example of Francis of Assisi, the Mission of OSF HealthCare is to serve persons with the greatest care and love in a community that celebrates the Gift of Life.

“The best barometer of how well we are doing as an OSF family is the overall well-being of the communities God entrusts to our care – one life at a time, one community at a time,” Sister Judith Ann said.

“Every year OSF St. Joseph continues to raise the standard for excellent care in Bloomington-Normal,” said Chad Boore, president of OSF St. Joseph. “Being a top 50 hospital in two categories by different organizations is a testament to the outstanding care provided by our physicians and staff.”

HEALTHGRADES AMERICA’S 50 BEST HOSPITALS FOR VASCULAR SURGERY AWARD 2016 The Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation recognized OSF St. Joseph Medical Center as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Vascular Surgery, ranking it in the top 1 percent nationwide. The Vascular Surgery Excellence Award is based on superior outcomes, analyzed over a three-year period, in abdominal aneurysm repair, carotid surgery, and peripheral vascular bypass surgery. Patients who have these procedures at these nationally recognized hospitals have a lower risk of experiencing a complication during their hospital stay.

The OSF Vascular Surgery Program participates in the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) National database. Risk-adjusted outcomes are measured, tracked, and reported, allowing opportunities for improvement to be identified.

Vascular surgeons at OSF St. Joseph perform both catheter-based interventions and open surgeries. Being able to offer the full spectrum of vascular procedures enables the surgeon to tailor the best approach for each individual patient. In some more complex cases, a hybrid approach – both catheter-based interventions and open surgery – are used in the same setting. Currently, a state of the art, hybrid operating room is under construction with plans to open next year. Incorporating vision, technology, and a collaborative approach, OSF St. Joseph continues to provide tremendous support and investment in the treatment of cardiovascular disease in central Illinois.

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, and assessed hospital performance relative to each of 33 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. The complete Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation with detailed cohort-specific outcomes data, hospital-specific quality achievements, and detailed study methodology, can be found at www.healthgrades.com/quality.

TRUVEN HEALTH 2016 50 TOP CARDIOVASCULAR HOSPITALS

Truven names OSF St. Joseph Medical Center as One of the Nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals. Selection for the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals award reflects excellence in cardiovascular services benefitting patients, their families, employers, and the entire community. OSF St. Joseph outperformed peers in inpatient and extended outcomes, clinical processes, efficiency, and cost for the two most common cardiovascular conditions (heart attack and heart failure) and interventions (PCI and CABG).

The Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study measures performance in key performance areas: risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures (a group of measures that assess process of care), percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, 30-day mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity- adjusted average cost. The study has been conducted annually since 1999.

“This recognition is an incredible validation of the excellent work performed by the entire cardiovascular team at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center,” said Dr.Yogesh Agarwal. “It is truly an honor to be part of such a team.”

For the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study, Truven Health researchers analyzed 2013 and 2014 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, 2014 Medicare cost reports, and 2015 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare data. “It is appropriate that the award recognizes the combined results of cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, hospitalists, and staff. This truly

demonstrates the outstanding quality of care that can be achieved through an integrated team approach to each patient,” said Dr. G. Bradley Smith.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the OSF St. Joseph Medical Center Heart Surgery Program. To date, 4,485 open heart surgery cases have been performed at OSF St. Joseph.

Cardiac surgery at OSF St. Joseph remains one of the top performing programs in the nation. Nearly 90 percent of coronary artery bypass surgery cases are done as beating heart surgery – allowing the patient to avoid the heart lung machine – compared to only 14 percent across the country. Risk-adjusted mortality and major complication rates are approximately 40 percent less than the national average. Length of stay and cost are also significantly reduced.

Dr. G. Bradley Smith received his cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Iowa and has practiced at OSF St. Joseph since 1993. Dr. Jesse VanLe received his cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Tennessee and has practiced at OSF St. Joseph since 2003. Dr. Yogesh K. Agarwal received his cardiovascular disease training at Westchester Medical Center in New York and his interventional cardiology raining at Jackson Medical Center in Florida. He has practiced at OSF St. Joseph since 2010. All three surgeons are part of HeartCare Midwest.

LOSE WEIGHT AND KEEP IT OFF WITH HMRNew Year’s is coming and many people have the resolution to become healthier, but losing weight is not a piece of cake.

So, when patients at OSF Weight Management are choosing a weight-loss plan, they want to make sure it is one that will work – and one that has tasty options!

According to U.S. News and World Reports and their list of 2015 Best Diets for Weight Loss, OSF Weight Management has one of the nation’s best diets – Health Management Resources (HMR®) Program for Weight Management™.

HMR allows patients to choose from several non-surgical weight loss options. The goal of HMR is to lose weight and keep it off by reducing calories via HMR meal replacements – low-calorie shakes, entrees, nutrition bars, and multigrain hot cereal. Patients have the option of choosing one plan that focuses on increasing their intake of fruits and vegetables to help displace higher-calorie foods from a diet. By mixing vegetables and fruits with HMR meal replacements, patients have filling, nutritious meals.

Page 15: WINTER/SPRING 2016 - OSF HealthCare · Bloomington, IL 61704 (309) 664-3120. Morgan Massey, APN OSF Medical Group – ... we appreciate her drive and passion for OSF St. Joseph.”

Physical activity is essential for successful long-term weight management, and we work with patients to increase physical activity in order to help it become a manageable part of their routine. HMR also recognizes the importance of learning healthy lifestyle strategies and increasing personal accountability for weight loss success.

“Not only do we have a program that works for weight loss, we also care about our patients,” says Ali Bryan, MS, RD, LDN, Weight Management Specialist, OSF Weight Management. “Our exercise physiologists, nurses, dieticians, and physicians all work together to make sure each patient reaches his or her weight loss goal...and keeps it off!”

OSF Weight Management offers free orientation classes for individuals to come and learn more about surgical and non-surgical weight-loss programs. Patients who choose the HMR program then enroll in a 13-week Phase I program.

In Phase I, individuals attend weekly one-hour group meetings, where the OSF Weight Management team discusses how to diet and be successful while providing medical supervision. OSF Weight Management also carries all of the HMR meal replacement products, so patients never have to worry about running out of tasty options.

If weekly meetings don’t seem doable, OSF Weight Management also offers an HMR at Home Weight Loss Program. Patients can order their food through OSF Weight Management, but do not attend weekly meetings. This is only recommended for certain patients and should be discussed further with a member of the OSF Weight Management Team.

After patients complete Phase I, they enter into Phase II, which is a one-year weight maintenance program of weekly meetings with a health educator to discuss recipes, exercises, and how to make long-term changes to keep the weight off.

“Research shows weight maintenance gets more manageable over time,” says Ali. According to an ongoing study conducted by the National Weight Control Registry, after individuals have successfully maintained their weight loss for two to five years, the chance of longer-term success greatly increases. “Our goal is to be your support system every step of the way and to teach you how to keep your weight off,” continues Ali.

As the leading provider of diet programs to the medical community, HMR has helped more than one million people make lifestyle changes to lose weight and be healthy. OSF Weight Management is committed to treat even the most medically complicated patients as well as those wanting to lose weight on their own. HMR gives patients the weight loss results they want, and the medical outcomes they need.

“Patients get excited when medications are reduced or eliminated, and their lab results fall in the normal range,” says Ali. “I love what I do, because I see firsthand how our patients overall feel better due to eating right!”

If you are interested in learning more about the programs at the OSF Weight Management Center, you can attend one of the free informational seminars offered Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. At the seminars, you will learn what program option is right for you, class times, costs, and much more. Registration is required.
