Director’s Message Since 1908, the Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission (APRC) has worked to provide easy access for parks and recreation opportunities to every Ashland citizen. That goal is just as relevant today as it was 107 years ago.

Within the 2015-17 biennial budget, the Parks Commission approved a Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and budget for the next two years to help increase access to parks and programs. The CIP ensures that new projects are funded that will keep APRC in a position of meeting their goals for today and future generations.

To highlight just one of APRC’s 2015-17 projects, The Grove remodel was approved by the Commission to allow for centralized access to the APRC’s Recreation Division and to unite all of the recreation staff at one location. The Grove, at 1195 E Main Street in Ashland, was originally designed and built to serve the youth of the community and was funded through a federal grant. Since 2000 the building has been in the possession of the City of Ashland and its use has been split between Ashland Police, Fire and Parks & Recreation. At best, the building has been used part-time. At the request of APRC, the Ashland City Council recently approved a full transfer of The Grove’s use and possession to APRC.

APRC plans for The Grove include:

1. Expanding the use of the building to offer more recreation programs at more times during the day and evening. The current plan does not include a physical expansion of the building; instead, APRC will focus on expanding building usage without expanding the footprint.

2. Relocating the APRC customer service functions to provide full APRC customer support at The Grove. Current recreation rooms in the building will not be affected by this remodel.

3. Expanding the office space into the lobby area to centralize APRC recreation staff. This will increase our ability to provide excellent customer service to our users.

4. Opening the doors to the public full-time. Since the City took ownership of the building, it has only been open for scheduled programs or events. APRC expects to keep the doors open during regular business hours Monday through Friday, plus the hours in which classes are held, whether it is early morning or late evening.

Free Bus Punch Cards/Valley Lift Vouchers A limited number of free bus punch cards and Valley Lift vouchers are available to seniors, age 62 and older. Punch cards are not transferable and apply to regular bus use only.

The Ashland Senior ProgramThe goal of the Senior Program is to provide a support system to the older residents of Ashland, helping them live more indepen-dently and continue as contributing members of the community. The following are services provided through the Senior Program:

• Information and Referral: referrals to local and regional resources for seniors

• Senior Food Box Program: Assistance in setting up deliv-ery of a senior food box in partnership with the Ashland Emergency Food Bank

• Outreach and Advocacy: assessment and assistance in guiding clients to appropriate services when needed

• Health-Related Activities: POLST/Advanced Directives offers assistance, blood pressure testing, foot care clinics and other health services as available

• Educational Activities: seminars and workshops on topics of interest to seniors

• Senior Utility Discount: screening for a discount on City utility bills for income-qualified persons age 65 or older, or qualified disabled persons age 60 or older

About North Mountain Park & The Nature Center — Hours & OverviewNorth Mountain Park is open sunrise to sunset, year-round. Nature Center is open Monday—Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The North Mountain Park Nature Center is located next to Bear Creek at 620 N Mountain Ave in Ashland. The Nature Center offers a variety of programs and interpretive exhibits that teach about local natural and cultural history and sustainable living. Visitors can also enjoy the park’s Demonstration Gardens, nature trails, pavilion, picnic and play areas.

Over 15 years ago, a committee of the Ashland Garden Club created the Heirloom Garden in front of North Mountain Park Nature Center. Ice scooters are available and great tools to help younger, inexperienced skaters become comfortable on the ice. Ice Rink Guards will distribute ice scooters after assessing a skater’s abilities and needs. Frozen Tots—Ages 13 & under This is a special time for parents and their young ones to enjoy a slow and safe experience at one of the most magical places in Ashland. Skate trainers (Ice Scooters) are available to assist inexperienced skaters. Parents are welcome to assist their young skaters for no extra charge but must stay with their children during skating time. Kids Fun Day—All Ages On Mondays and Wednesdays, kids of all ages can Learn to Skate and then take part in Frozen Tots. On Mondays, the fun continues, with the option of staying late for Cheap Skates!

Learn to Skate—All Ages Do you want to enjoy the ice rink this winter, but you’ve never even put skates on before? Come and join us on Mondays and Wednesdays for beginning lessons with experienced instructors. Classes will be taught in a group format. All ages are welcome to participate. Open skate admission rates apply but we provide the skates!

Figure Skating Classes—Ages 3 to 16; Beginning & Intermediate Levels ($35) Classes will take place on Thursdays and focus on develop-ment and basic techniques to learn the art of figure skating. Students should have the ability to skate independently with little assistance and be prepared with gloves, hat and winter coat to stay warm. Parents are asked to remain at the rink during the duration of the lesson. The cost is $35 (Please note: no refunds or pro-rated charges for missed classes). Stick & Puck—All Ages Helmets and sticks are required for this session. Additional protective gear is suggested and available for younger play-ers. Petroleum History, Current Status & Our Energy Future

This presentation will cover the following aspects of Petroleum:

1) A brief overview of the geology of petroleum (oil and gas) and how the industry conducts exploration, drill-ing, production, transportation and refining operations. How petroleum and other fossil fuels dominate energy supply and a global picture of consumption, production and reserves.

2) A look at the new sources of petroleum such as sub- and pre-salt, deep water, polar and gas hydrates reservoirs, as well as hydraulic fracturing in shale. An explanation of how these have dramatically changed the petroleum-supply picture in the US and globally and have caused new environmental concerns regard-ing water pollution, earthquakes and climate change.

Lithia Park Reservations & Facility Rental InformationPark facilities can be rented for private special events such as weddings, receptions, meetings, picnics, and family gatherings.

It’s Easy to Reserve in Lithia Park! You can make a formal reservation with a debit/credit card by call-ing 541.488.5340. To pay with a check or cash, visit the Ashland Parks & Recreation office located at 340 S Pioneer Street (upper Lithia Park). There is a refundable security deposit for any formal reservation. For other events, including picnics, birthday parties and family reunions, fees range from $55–$75 per four-hour time block depending on location.

Indoor Reservable FacilitiesThe Community Center and Pioneer Hall are indoor facilities available to rent for events such as weddings, receptions, birthday parties, meetings, and conferences. Fees and de-posits are required.

Going Solar in AshlandNow is a great time to consider generating energy from the sun at your home or business. A solar system compares very favorably to many things on which we spend our money. In addition to reducing our use of fossil fuels and climate impact, it also lowers our energy bills.

In Ashland, an optimally oriented, unshaded solar electric system will generate about 1.32 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity annually per rated Watt of panels installed. Solar water heating systems typically save the equivalent of 2,500 kWh of electricity annually!

To encourage Ashland residents and businesses to install new solar electric systems, the City of Ashland provides site assessments and assists with financial incentives for qualifying installations. In Ashland, incentive funding is available through several sources, including Federal tax credits, Oregon tax credits and City of Ashland rebates. This can amount to considerable savings.

Bike Polo at Hunter Park Bike Polo is a fast-growing alternative sport that started in the late 1890s in Ireland and was played on grassy fields. It grew in popularity and was even demonstrated in the 1908 London Olympics. The modern version known as “Hardcourt Bike Polo” made its debut in the late 1990s in Seattle as a way for bike messengers and bike enthusiasts to pass time. It grew rapidly in popularity over the years and has spread worldwide with over 400 clubs and multiple associations hosting the North American championship and European championship. Hardcourt Bike Polo is a coed sport and all skill levels are welcomed. The game is played 3-versus-3 and the first team to score five goals wins; all while not stepping off your bike! We meet every Monday at 6 p.m. at Hunter Park on court 5 for regular pickup. Mallets and loaner bikes are available for use. Heritage Cemetery Days Local historians recall famous families and notable persons during historical walk and talks

Curious about those who came before us and the many stories that are part of our local Southern Oregon heritage? Their names are on streets and buildings throughout the Valley. Heritage Cemetery Days is a new event series offered by the Southern Oregon Historical Society, visiting historic cemeteries throughout the county. Local historians will be on-hand to tell stories about these beautiful and remarkable places and the people who came before. Join Marcia Wineteer of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for a wildflower walk in Oredson-Todd Woods. Learn to identify spring wildflowers along some of the trails. Homeschoolers Explore Animals of the Rogue Valley

The North Mountain Park Nature Center, located in Ashland, is offering a morning of outdoor fun and learn-ing exclusively for young homeschool students. In this hands-on outdoor program, students ages 5 to 8 years will experience and appreciate the animal species with which we share our valley. Students will learn about the needs that people, domestic animals, and local wildlife share. They will learn about animal adaptations and will use close observation to notice signs of birds and other wildlife. The festival, scheduled for early May, 2016, will take place in Lithia Park and celebrate multiculturalism with international music and dance! Ashland Community Bike SwapSaturday, April 16, Noon to 2 p.m.The 26th Annual Bike Swap promotes bicycle transportation & recreation and benefits bike safety education by providing a community venue for buying and selling working-condition bicycles and related equipment. This event is made possible by Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission (APRC), RVTD (Rogue Valley Transportation District), and the City of Ashland Fire Department and Transportation Commission.

If you are interested in selling, items for sale can be dropped off Friday, April 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, April 16, from 8 to 10 a.m.

If you are interested in buying a bicycle, the swap will be open to the public on Saturday, April 16, from noon to 2 p.m. The event will take place at The Grove, 1195 E Main St in Ashland. Admission into the swap is $1 per person. Babies are free!

The Ashland Parks Foundation has a goal to refurbish

the Butler-Perozzi Fountain in Lithia Park. The fountain,

situated on a formal terrace near the sycamore

grove, a rose garden and the Butler Memorial Band

Shelter, was offered as a memorial gift to the City

of Ashland in 1915 by Gwin Butler and Domingo

Perozzi. The fountain was sculpted by Antonio Frilli

in Florence, Italy, in the early 1900s and completely

restored in the 1980s. Funding is needed for general

repairs and vandalism. Due to its prime location

within Lithia Park, the fountain is vandalized more

frequently than any other area in Lithia Park.

FootGolf at Oak Knoll Golf Course

FootGolf is a new sport, already played at hundreds of golf courses across the country, that combines elements of soccer and golf. The player’s goal is simple: to kick a soccer ball into a 21-inch cup in the fewest strokes possible. FootGolf is perfect for juniors, families, soccer teams or anyone looking to enjoy our beautiful course at an affordable price. All the player needs to bring is a soccer ball (regulation #5 soccer ball) and soft-soled shoes (no soccer cleats allowed). Archery Archery is a lifetime skill with many benefits that any individual or family can practice and enjoy. This is a great way for children to develop motor skills while improving focus and concentration. Adults also benefit by sharpening their senses and relieving stress. In this class you will learn about archery safety and Olympic-style techniques for successfully shooting at targets and having fun! The instructor, Lloyd Canty, began archery in Australia at the age of 7. He is currently the Archery Instructor at the Ashland Family YMCA where he teaches the beginner’s USA Olympic Archery program. Under his coaching expertise, hundreds of children, teens and adults have developed their archery technique and target-shooting skills. Please register by calling the APRC office at 541.488.5340. Online registration is not available for this program.

Family ArcheryFamily Archery is focused on having children and adult family members share the enjoyment of learning a new skill or for experienced adults to pass on their archery skills to younger generations.

Tai Chi for Adults 50 & BetterTai Chi is a moving meditation that strengthens bones and muscles, improves balance and increases flexibility. Instructor Char Hersh will use various forms of Tai Chi to create a flowing routine that can be done anywhere. She recently added Qi Gong, the movement of energy through the body. The class is ongoing and instruction is continuous so you may join at any time. Your first class is as our guest. See page 5 to learn more about the Ashland Senior Center. Gentle Yoga for Adults 60 & Better

Join instructor Marion Moore for a yoga class designed for seniors and people with physical challenges or limitations. Participants will be asked to get up and down from the floor once during each session. 5. Update Shopping Cart—If more than one family member will be attending the activity, you need to enter each one separately so we have each family member enrolled in the class.

6. Choose Enrollees—On this page, choose the family member(s) who will be registering for each activity, then select Continue. Please Note: If you have not added your family members before reaching the enroLLee inFormAtion page, they will not appear under the enroLLee heading. You can click on my ACCount from here to add family member(s). Once all family members have been added, select shoPPing CArt. From there you may continue to CheCkout.

7. Checkout—Review your shoPPing CArt. From this screen you can remove activities from your cart, view more activities, or update your cart. If everything is correct, click on the CheCkout button to proceed.

8. Confirm Prices—On the ConFirm PriCes page, look over your transaction to confirm the price(s), time(s), and date(s) of each activity/class. Click Continue to proceed.

9. Payment—Enter your credit card information on the PAyment inFormAtion page. Please Note: The name and address must match those on file with your credit card company.
