The Way of the TravelerMy good friend and mentor, Joseph Dispenza, died this summer. He was 72 years old. Joseph made his mark on the world in so many important ways. The astute advice he offered me, gently, during the early years of The Workshops and his book, The Way of the Traveler, had a great impact on my life. The book’s subtitle, Making Every Trip a Journey of Self-Discovery, initially drew me in and I read his book over and over again. I also spent time with Joseph talking about the mythical hero’s journey, which further opened my eyes and my heart to the many benefits of a journey to a new land.

In honor of Joseph, I would like to share with you my favorite passage from The Way of the Traveler:“Travel transforms us—it is almost cliché to say it, but it is one of the towering truths of life. When we close the door of home upon the past, we open another door to personal transformation. At the heart of that journey “out,” we happen upon the deepest mysteries “within.” There, the possibility of realizing the highest version of self lies waiting—waiting for us to recognize it, claim it, and begin on the path back home victorious.”

Of all the joys of traveling, I believe the pleasure of traveling with a camera at your side to create images of your discoveries, memories, wonders and personal insights is the most rewarding, and fun, way of the traveler. I invite you to join us in 2016 in Japan, Cuba, San Miguel de Allende, Cartagena, or Santa Fe. These journeys “out” to far-off lands and closer-in wonders are bound be travels that spark in you not only photographic but personal transformation.

paulette tavormina’s journey as a photographer has been an exhilarating one. This spring, twenty-five years after her voyage started, she returns to where it all began. this is her stOry.. .

Paulette’s introduction to the photo world started ordinarily enough. While working for a small PR firm in New York, she was asked to photograph a famous flutist for a client. She recalls, “All the other pho-tographers had these big cameras with big flash units, and there I was with my little Olympus clamshell camera. But I got the shot!” She also got the motivation to improve her skills.

Before too long, she was offered a job in Santa Fe photographing a collection of historic Cochiti pottery. Santa Fe drew her in and she started taking classes at Santa Fe Workshops. One lesson in par-ticular stood out. “One of my instructors told me that I needed to specialize. It never had dawned on me that it can be impor-tant to learn one particular field or aspect,” she says, “That’s how it all really started for me.”

Once she had chosen her specialty—food and still life—her creativity and business thrived. Her experience has included pho-tographing for cookbooks, prop styling for movie productions, and photographing artwork for Sotheby’s catalogs.

Paulette tavormina leads the Fine art oF still liFe PhotograPhy, aPril 3-8. For more information see page 18 or visit www.santafeworkshops.com.

Eventually, she decided to pursue her long-held dream of creating photographs inspired by Old Master paintings. “I just immersed myself into this whole new genre,” she explains, “And that’s what I’ve been doing for the last eight years.”

When she felt the work was ready she con-tacted the Robert Klein Gallery in Boston. It was her big break. She recalls, “Robert himself emailed me back to offer to represent me and my life changed in an instant. Twenty years later, from my education in Santa Fe to my love of old master paintings, it all came together.” She now has gallery representa-tion in New York and San Francisco, had a solo show at the Beetles + Huxley gallery in London, and her first monograph—a new series called Vanitas—will be published in April of 2016.

With her return to Santa Fe Workshops this spring, this time as an instructor, Paulette’s photographic life has come full circle. As she says, “I’m thrilled to be teaching at the place where it all began and excited to share what it’s taken for me to get from The Workshops to right now.”

Since the founding of The Workshops in 1990, small class sizes of 14 to 15 participants has been a cornerstone element of our educational model and long-term success. We have found these numbers encourage dynamic group interaction and offer generous access to the guest photographers who lead our workshops. Another key component of our longevity is listening to our customers and acting on your suggestions. You asked for even smaller class sizes. For Spring 2016 we are pleased to offer four limited-enrollment workshops, called Master Classes, to provide you with even greater access to our world-class instructors.

SFPW: Tell us about how you first got started in photography?

EP: After years of working for social service organizations, I needed a change of pace. A friend hired me to work for his public relations firm, and I began to shoot for our clients. Six years ago, I decided if I was serious about this I had to go all in.

SFPW: Share a little about your Santa Fe Workshops experience.

EP: I studied with Joe McNally and Jay Maisel in Santa Fe. An embarrassment of riches if you ask me! The two workshops could not have been more dif-ferent in almost every respect, which was very refreshing and challenging.

SFPW: When did you decide to go to Cuba and what inspired Las Transformistas?

EP: I went to Cuba for the first time in April of 2011, with Santa Fe Workshops. Like many Americans, I had been intrigued by the his-tory of Cuba and its status at the time as a “forbidden fruit” for U.S. citizens. Shortly after that trip, I discovered a short video on

Professional photographer and Workshops alumnus Eric PolitzEr shares his

thoughts on photography, workshops, and his latest project:

las transformistas of Havana, portraits of female impersonator and male-to-female transgender performers in Havana’s gay cabarets.

After five years, and having taken over 1,000 photographers to Cuba, Santa Fe Photographic Workshops is a seasoned leader in navigating the complexities of traveling in this communist country. Kip Brundage, our Director of Cuba Programs, and our team of Havana-based Cuban photographers provide their expert knowledge of the country and guide you behind the tourist veil.

A world-renowned photographer leads each program. Small group sizes and our unique access to dance and artist studios, ballet rehearsals, local homes, boxing gyms, privately-owned farms, and specially arranged musical performances—to name a few of our well-planned events and locations—encourage authentic, compelling educational and photographic exchanges.

Now truly is the time to experience the ever-changing enigma known as Cuba. You’ll discover that Cuba represents not just another travel opportunity, but the chance to become richer in thought, spirit, and vision, both as a person and as a photographer.

True to the requirements of a people-to-people General License with the U.S. Treasury Department, our programs in Cuba focus on educational exchanges with the Cuban people and recording their amazing lives with our cameras.

Las Transformistas. I wanted to investigate this more, as I’m very aware of not only the discrimination against, and struggles of, people living on the margins of society, but also of the tremendous contributions they make in fighting for fairness and inclusion

for all people.

SFPW: What did you learn dur-ing this project?

EP: My belief in photography as a tool for social change was really validated. We took many of Las Transformistas out into very public spaces. None of them had done this before in performance attire. Initially things were pretty tense, but over time they came to own

those spaces: they realized they belonged there as much as anyone else. The project had become a form of social empowerment for them. And it empowered me as well. This project has emboldened me to take more risks in my work, become much more adaptive to challenging circumstances, and to realize that I should not sweat most of the stuff that comes up in the daily grind of being a photographer.
