AT THE NEWARK ARTS ALLIANCE

All classes are held at the Newark Arts Alliance. Scholarships

available based on financial need. Please ask for an application.

Adult/Teen Classes

Spiritual Expression/101 Teacher: A. Duff, Ages: 18+, Maximum

students:8, Feb 11 – Mar 4 (4 Mondays), 6:30pm – 8:30pm. Materials:

Students will bring to class colored markers, pencils and/or pastels (oil or

chalk), white drawing paper in sheets or pads, (minimum size 9’ X 12’,

minimum weight 80 lb), and any favorite or preferred materials. Class fee

includes non-refundable $10 materials fee. Using a variety of art materi-

als, students will explore spiritual beliefs, conflict and paradox, and crea-

tively express emotions related to spirituality. No art experience or training

is required because the class focuses on creative expression rather than

technique. This class is not a forum for discussion or debate about differ-

ent faiths or religious practices; rather, it is an invitation to investigate and

celebrate personal religious experience through art. $70M/$80NM

Sketchbook: The Self/102 Teacher: J. Polillo, Ages:16+, Maximum

students:10, Feb 12-Mar 5 (4 Tuesdays), 6:30pm–8:30pm, Enrollment

ends Feb 8. Materials: Students will bring a sketchbook to class. Class fee

includes $25 non-refundable materials fee. This course is designed for the

creative person who would like to meet other artistic people and be com-

pelled to work more frequently in a sketchbook or artistic journal. The

class will have group discussions and critiques, and explore a variety of

media in order to help each express their own artistic vision. Open ended

assignments based on the theme ‘The Self’ will be assigned each week

and will be the basis for weekly discussions and critiques. $85M/$95NM

Pysanky (Egg Art)/103 Teacher: J. Domal, Ages:adults, teens,

children with adults, Maximum students:12, Feb 16 –Mar 2 (3 Saturdays),

2:00pm – 5:00pm. Materials: Students will bring room temperature chick-

en eggs. Class fee includes $15 non-refundable materials fee for remain-

ing materials. Make ornaments that draw on traditional designs celebrat-

ing folk art, using dyes and gentle acids. Eggs can be used to decorate for

Easter, summer or Christmas. Please come to class with hair tied back,

no loose clothes and clothes that can get stained! $80M/$90NM

Me, Myself and I Portrait Class/104 Teacher: T. Foreman, Ages:

14+ Maximum students:8, Mar 6 – Mar 20 (4 Wednesdays), 6:00pm –

8:30pm. Materials: Students may bring photos of themselves if they wish.

Class fee includes $10 non-refundable materials fee. Experiment with

composite pencil renderings and paper collage techniques to create a

series of self-portraits that convey your inner awesomeness. Some previ-

ous drawing experience is helpful but not necessary. Consider entering

your finished work in the “Me, Myself and I” art exhibit at the NAA in April!

Mini-Collage Art Date/105 Teacher: T. Foreman Ages: 13+ Maxi-

mum students:8, Mar 8 (One Friday), 6:30pm – 9:30pm. Materials: Stu-

dents can bring collage materials from home but collage materials are

provided. Class fee includes $6 non-refundable materials

fee. Free your mind and make several small, improvised

collages using magazine clippings, clip art, patterned papers

and random small objects. No art experience necessary, just

a willingness to explore color and imagery to create unique

compositions. We’ll provide complimentary wine, soft drinks,

cheese and crackers. Bring your own take out dinner if you

like. $30M/$35NM

Create Your Own Silk Scarf/106 Teacher: R. Aldorasi, Ages:any,

Maximum students:15, Mar 9 (One Saturday), Noon– 3:00pm. Materials:

The class fee includes one silk scarf; additional scarves may be pur-

chased from the teacher on the day of the class for $30 each. Students

will use Ebru, a Turkish marbling technique and Suminagashi, a classical

Japanese marbling technique to produce one-of-a-kind floating pictures,

then make prints on silk scarves of beautiful patterns and other effects

created from a wide variety of colors and using a variety of tools. $55M/

$65NM

Basic Photography/107 Teacher: D. Simons, Ages: 14+ Maximum

students:6, Mar 11 (One Monday),7:00pm – 9:00pm Students will learn to

use their cameras in this basic level class. Learn the basic settings, how

to take an interesting shot, save files, transfer images to CDs and make

prints. $25M/$30NM

Drawing Basics for Adults/108 Teacher: J. Polillo, Ages: 16+

Maximum students: 10, Mar 12 – Apr 2 (4 Tuesdays), 6:30pm – 8:30pm,

Enrollment ends Mar 8. Materials: Students will bring sketchbook to class.

Class fee includes $25 non-refundable materials fee. For beginner and

intermediate artists. Students will develop fundamental drawing skills and

techniques using various media by working from observation as well as

from photographs. The compositional aspects of drawing will be stressed.

This class will challenge students to recognize the rich visual life of the

world, expand creative thinking, and give the tools to observe and under-

stand what they see. Students will also be introduced to various methods

of expression, artistic themes, and art history, while gaining a working

knowledge of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. $85M/$95NM

Art from the Soul/109 Teacher: A. Duff, Ages:18+ Maximum stu-

dents:8, Mar 14 – Apr 4 (4 Thursdays),6:30pm – 8:30pm. Materials: Stu-

dents will bring to class colored markers, pencils and/or pastels (oil or

chalk), white drawing paper in sheets or pads (minimum size 9’ X 12’,

minimum weight 80 lb), and any favorite or preferred materials. Class fee

includes $10 non-refundable materials fee. Tap into the unconscious to

create artwork using a variety of media including markers, colored pencils,

pastel, and collage. Based on Carl Jung’s concept of active imagination, a

process of deliberately tapping into the unconscious to stimulate creativity.

No art experience or training is required. Relieve artistic anxiety by focus-

ing on creative expression rather than technique. Students will uncover

and confront barriers such as self-judgment and perfectionism, and begin

to develop a symbolic vocabulary. $70M/$80NM

Basic Monoprinting Workshop/110 Teacher: M. Johnson, Ages:

14+ Maximum students: 8, Session 1: Mar 16 (one Saturday), or Session

2: Apr 2 (one Saturday),1:00pm – 4:00pm. Materials: class fee includes

$40 non-refundable materials. Students will learn multiple printing tech-

niques using plexi-glass plates, ink, paper, rollers, brushes, ripped paper,

recycled materials, and more. Students will create several prints they can

take home the same day. $65M/$75NM

Intermediate Photography/111 Teacher: D. Simons, Ages: 14+

Maximum students:6, Mar 25 (One Monday), 7:00pm – 9:00pm. This

class is for those who are familiar with their camera and are interested in

exploring more advanced options. Students will gain more confidence in

their photography skills as they learn how to camera settings and how to

capture amazing images. Students should be familiar with the

basic controls of their camera and have taken pictures before

registering for this class. $25M/$30NM

Beginning Guitar for Adults – Group Lessons/112

Teacher: E. McKeever, Ages: 14+ Maximum students:8, Mar

27–Apr 24 (5 Wednesdays), 7:00pm – 7:45pm. Materials: Each

student will provide his/her own guitar. Class fee includes $5

non-refundable materials fee. This course is designed to get the

beginning guitarist off the ground and by the end, students will

have enough background to progress on their own study or with a private

instructor. Starting with the very basics like re-stringing and tuning the

guitar, students will then progress through three songs, learning seven

chords, strum patterns, and chord relationships. $45M/$50NM

Sketchbook: Nature/113 Teacher: J. Polillo, Ages: 16+ Maximum

students:10, Apr 9 – Apr 30 (4 Tuesdays), 6:30pm – 8:30pm. Enrollment

ends Apr 2. Materials: Students will bring a sketchbook to class. Class

fee includes a $25 non-refundable materials fee. This course is designed

for the creative person who would like to meet other artistic people and

be compelled to work more frequently in a sketchbook or artistic journal.

The class will have group discussions and critiques, and explore a variety

of media in order to help each to express their own artistic vision. Open

ended assignments based on the theme ‘Nature’ will be assigned each

week and will be the basis for weekly discussions and critiques. $85M/

Ink Drawing/114 Teacher: J Domal, Ages: 16+ Maximum stu-

dents:12, Apr 18 – Apr 25 (2 Thursdays), 6:30pm – 9:00pm. Materials:

Class fee includes a $25 non-refundable materials fee. This class is an

introduction to the tools, methods, practice and history of ink drawing,

inspired by ancient Indian, Buddhist, Chinese, Islamic and Byzantine

tapestries, ink paintings and pottery. The use of color will be explored.

$65M/$75NM

Steampunk Art/115 Teacher: T. Foreman, Ages: 13+ Maximum

students:8, May 2 – May 23 (4 Thursdays), 6:00pm – 8:30pm. Materials:

Class fee includes a $10 non-refundable materials fee. Join the Steam-

punk craze and make collages and polymer jewelry using steampunk as

your inspiration. Steampunk combines Victorian imagery with machine

parts, gears, gizmos and anything funky to create a new composite art-

work (see Sherlock Holmes movies to get the idea). $80M/$90NM

Drawing Basics for Teens/116 Teacher: J. Polillo, Ages: 12 – 15

Maximum students:10, May 7 – May 28 (4 Tuesdays), 6:30pm – 8:30pm,

Enrollment ends May 3. Materials: Students will bring a sketchbook to

class. Class fee includes a $15 non-refundable materials fee. For begin-

ner and intermediate artists. This course follows the same outline as

Drawing Basics for Adults but is aimed at the teenage artist. $75M/

$85NM

Kid’s Classes

Baritone Ukulele for Budding Guitarists–Group Les-

sons/117 Teacher: E. McKeever, Ages: 7 – 9 Maximum students:6,

Feb 13 – Mar 20 (6 Wednesdays), 4:00pm – 4:45pm. Materials: Class fee

includes $40 non-refundable materials fee. The baritone ukulele is an

ideal instrument for children to begin guitar study because of its size and

soft nylon strings. The teacher will provide each student with a ukulele

during the first class, where they will individually paint the instrument, and

students will bring their ukuleles to all subsequent classes. Children will

play games to help with rhythm, learn several melodies, and read musical

notation. $85M/$95NM

Decoupage Mirrors for Mother’s Day/118 Teacher: T. Fore-

man, Ages: 10-14 Maximum students:8, May 11 (One Saturday),1:00pm

– 3:30pm. Materials: Class fee includes $8 non-refundable materials fee.

Make something memorable for mom this Mother’s day. Students will cut

printed papers and collage imagery and layer them onto a 12” wood

framed mirror. Embellish with trims and metallic markers for extra piz-

zazz. This is a fun art form that will get you collecting papers and gluing

them over everything in your home! $30M/$35NM

Free and Facilitated Programs

Art Empowerment Teacher: C. Everett Ages: 18+ Feb 10 – Feb

24 (3 Sundays), 2:00pm – 4:00pm. Materials: Participants will bring actual

artwork for art criticism. Art Empowerment is designed to give artists

(college students, emerging and professional artists) constructive criti-

cism about their artwork, while building relationships and networking with

other local artists. Participants will analyze and discuss their own artwork

based on several criteria: formal, interpretive and technical. They will also

focus on Art Business 101, learn how to develop a portfolio, design an

artist’s resume and artist’s statement, and build confidence as entrepre-

neurs. Recommended textbooks available at Amazon: (Selling Art 101 –

ISBN 094089965 and Advanced Strategies for Marketing Art – ISBN

0940899558). FREE, no registration necessary.

Music Jam Come to the Newark Arts Alliance on the first Sunday of

each month from 12:30 to 3:00 for the monthly Music Jam. Bring an in-

strument or come to watch or sing along. FREE, open to the public.

Drum Circle Fourth Friday of each month from January to October.

Bring or borrow a percussion instrument and help us make joyful sound

from 7-8:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public. FREE, open to

the public.

Painting Group Feb 6, Feb 13, Mar 6, Mar 20, Apr 3, Apr 17, May 1,

May 15,9:30am – noon Escape the loneliness of the studio and seek the

company and advice of other painters in this drop-in painting session.

Participants bring their own artwork and supplies. FREE, open to the

public.

Figure Drawing with live models. Second Thursday of each

month, 7:30 pm. Artists bring their own supplies for a chance to work

from a live model. No instruction provided. FREE for NAA members and

$5 for non-members, plus participants split the cost of model.

EVENT: I Heart Art

On Friday, February 8 from 6:30 – 9:00 pm the Newark

Arts Alliance will be hosting a dessert tasting, featuring

treats from local restaurants. $15/person (includes one

drink).

What a fun event on the weekend before Valentine’s Day!

Taste desserts from local restaurants, sip some wine, may-

be even buy some jewelry or other artwork made by a local

artist.

Teacher Bios

Rich Aldorasi is an international jazz musician who has worked as an artist for over 40

years. In 2009, he founded the Philadelphia Paper Company/World Art Project. He has since

continually conducted programs and workshops in papermaking and marbling.

Jennifer Domal teaches private lessons as well as at local arts centers. And in after school

drawing programs. She exhibits her work locally.

Andrea Duff has a M.A. in Creative Arts in Therapy from Drexel University, has taught yoga

at Kirkwood Fitness and has led yoga independently and for an annual women’s retreat in

Rehoboth, DE.

Chad Cortez Everett received a BFA in Painting and a Certification in Art Education from

Temple University, Tyler School of Art. Chad earned his Master’s degree in Fine Arts from

Maryland Institute, College of Art. Mr. Everett is an art teacher and mentor at McCullough

Middle School, Colonial School district.

Terry Foreman has a B.A. in Art and over 25 years experience teaching art at the NAA and

in area art centers. She designs programs for ‘Art to Go’ and has done several public murals

locally. She also teaches K-8 art at Newark Center for Creative Learning, a local, private

school.

Melissa Johnson is a certified K-12 Art Teacher and currently works for the Colonial School

District at New Castle School and William Penn High School.

Em McKeever received a Bachelor of Music-Instrumental Performance from the University of

North Carolina at Greensboro in 2008. She has taught private and group music lessons for

over 10 years.

Jennifer Polillo holds a Certificate in Painting from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine

Arts and BFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Over the past 15 years she has taught

students of all ages at UArts, PAFA, the NAA and at the Delaware Center for Contemporary

Arts.

Dain Simons has a BFA in Photography from the University of Delaware. He exhibits his

photographs throughout the region, teaches at several venues and is a photographic consult-

ant for Cameras, Etc. in Newark.
