Vienna is known the world over for its history, its sights and its music. It has
a national park within its city boundaries and crystal clear water ready for
drinking straight from the mountains. Environmental protection for Vienna
is a matter of course, and it goes without saying that Vienna’s waste water
treatment plant is among the most modern worldwide.

Lebensqualität in Wien.

Vienna invests in the future – so that future generations can enjoy the same
clean water we do today. The city’s main waste water treatment plant is at
the core of a comprehensive environmental programme that has done much
to improve the quality of rivers in Vienna and thus the quality of life in the
city as a whole. New intercepting sewers, an entire sewer system serving
as a reservoir to feed waste water into the main treatment plant as needed,
plus the plant’s exceptional performance, have all proved milestones in the
city’s ecological development. With its state-of-the art technology, ebswien
hauptkläranlage has contributed significantly towards strengthening
Vienna’s reputation as a model environmental city. The facility is among the
largest in all of Europe and one of the most modern worldwide, making sure
that “all is clear” in Vienna today and tomorrow.
// E
FoREWoRD DIREcToR GENERAL cHRISTIAN GANTNER
More than 160 employees at ebswien hauptkläranlage are committed to
purifying all of Vienna’s waste water. 7,000 litres per second are fed into the
plant, round the clock, each and every day of the year. Nature has stood as
a model for our work: microorganisms and bacteria biologically degrade the
pollutants contained as they would in natural waters, more quickly and more
effectively so because of the sophisticated technology involved. 20 hours
later the purified water leaves the main treatment plant to return to the river
Danube via the Danube canal. And thanks to the plant’s superb purification
rates we can achieve our goal too which is to see the Danube’s waters off
the same clean way we welcomed them into the city. This is our contribution
towards environmental protection and quality of life in Vienna.

In a sealed document presented when the foundation stone for the main treatment plant was laid on June 4, 1970, former mayor of Vienna Bruno Marek
expressed the hope that “this plant, by reintroducing purified waste water into the cycle of nature, will help to keep the space we live in clean.“ Ten years on
his wish began to take shape as mayor Leopold Gratz officially opened the plant on June 30, 1980. Simmering proved a good location as it is one of the city’s
lowest points topographically and waste water flows down a natural slope along the 2,400 km of sewer to reach the plant. Solids are removed mechanically
before the water is treated biologically. This is a real milestone for water protection and for the quality of the environment in Vienna.

crystal clear drinking water is delivered to Vienna directly from the
mountains. The average person consumes 130 litres daily for showering or
flushing the toilet, amongst other things. The drinking water is contaminated
in this way with solids and solutes, especially organic and inorganic carbon,
nitrogen and phosphor compounds. Untreated waste water constitutes an
enormous burden for all waters, both from an environmental and a hygienic
point of view.

Vienna’s sewer system ends at the inflow to the main treatment plant. Here
is where at the gravel trap (1) rough solids are removed from the waste
water. The water then has to be raised five metres with the help of screw
pumps (2). Small and minute solids and suspended matter are held back
in the screening plant (3), the sand trap (4) and the primary sedimentation
tanks (5). Mechanical treatment ends here. In the aeration tanks at biological
treatment stage 1 (6) oxygen is supplied to activate trillions of microorgan-
isms to devour pollutants in the water. Fully satiated they settle to the ground
as sludge in the intermediate settling tanks (7). The waste water is subse-
quently conducted via the intermediate pumping station (9) to the aeration
tanks at biological treatment stage 2 (10). oxygen is supplied once more
to motivate microorganisms into degrading the remaining pollutants. Again
they settle to the ground as sludge in the huge clarification tanks (11). The
sludge is collected in four sludge thickeners (8) for thermal recycling. Puri-
fied water flows to the discharge below ground (12), then on to the analysis
facility and finally into the Danube canal and the Danube.

By the end of the first biological purification stage 85 % of the carbon

Biological waste water treatment begins in the aeration
tanks at stage one. Microorganisms and bacteria are set to
work to remove pollutants. To do this they require oxygen,
which is mixed into the waste water with the help of
surface aerators. Microorganisms rapidly reproduce and
break down pollutants, at this stage mostly carbon com-
pounds, into their components. Just like Mother Nature!
For this is exactly what happens in natural watercourses.
With the exception that modern technology as employed

In the aeration tanks at the second biological treatment stage the

SAubEREENERGIE
Purified waste water is used to generate energy: a Kaplan turbine at the treatment plant’s discharge makes maximum use of the downward slope to the Danube canal (up to 5 metres).
An annual 1,300 MWh of clean electricity are produced this way, enough to serve 430 households.
A 23 m wind turbine generates the electricity required to light
3,500 metres of underground supply corridors (collectors) at the main
waste water treatment plant.
ebswien hauptkläranlage, to accomplish its tasks, generates
approximately 1% of the city’s overall energy consumption.
We have been able to reduce our energy requirements by 13%
or 7 GWh annually by continuously raising the plant’s energy
efficiency and employing renewable energy sources (SternE
project). These savings constitute approximately the amount
2,300 households would require and result in a reduction of
co2 emissions of 3,000 tons annually. Thus we contribute our
fair share towards climate protection. Along with the power of
water and wind we also tap the power of the sun in our solar
thermal heating and photovoltaic systems. This saves energy
during water heating and provides the juice for our e-vehicle
fleet: our e-mobiles and e-bikes fill up with sun at the plant’s
own solar filling station.

Energy will continue to be the focus at ebswien in the years to come: reinvesting in primary sedimentation and the first biological purification stage is to make
room for EoS - Energy optimisation Sludge Treatment - project – starting in 2015. Six digestion towers 30 metres high each will give the treatment plant a
distinctive new face. 20 million m3 of sewage gas annually will be processed to generate clean energy as of 2020. This is our contribution towards long-term
climate protection in Vienna.

Tim and Trixi Tropf the two water drops have a story to tell about the cycle of water: how it makes its way from the source high up in the mountains, across the
two mountain spring pipelines and the sewer system, to finally end up at the main waste water treatment plant for purification. The EULE training programme
was set up in cooperation with Vienna Waterworks and Vienna Waste Water Management. on-the-spot learning is supported by a children’s book and animated
movie “Tim & Trixi – The Movie“. The “Tim & Trixi-Hall “ on the grounds of ebswien hauptkläranlage provides the perfect setting for children to learn more about
water protection and examine at close quarters a specially made model treatment plant.
