Cocoa and cocoabutter come rom
cocoa beans
Cocoa beans grow on trees, inside pods that are as big as
ootballs! It is too cold to grow cocoa in the United States.
Cocoa pods might want a scar to stay warm here!
Can you name some places
where cocoa might grow?
sugar milk cocoa/

Chocolate alwayshas cocoa andcocoa butter. It
usually has sugarand sometimes
milk, too.
Cocoa grows inrainorests that are
warm and wet.

Do you know where these countries are?Do you think you could walk to them?

When you nd each o these places, write their names onthe map or color each one a diferent color so you will
remember where they are.
Find Ghana and Cameroon andthe Ivory Coast on the map o
Arica. Find Indonesia on the map oSoutheast Asia.
You could walk toLatin America but itwould take a really

want to take a planeor a boat or a car.
Arica and SoutheastAsia are all the way
across the ocean. Youwould have to take along ride on a planeor boat to get there.

Every time you eat chocolate, you
are sharing a yummy git rom hard
working cocoa armers that live in
these araway places. Chocolate
brings the world together!
week 2Most cocoa armers have never even
eaten chocolate! They are too poor
to buy or make chocolate bars. They
cannot even pay or things they need,
like ood and clothes and trips to the
doctor.
Cocoa armers arepoor because they
do not get paidvery much or their
cocoa.
Cocoa armers get25 to 50 or each
pound o cocoa beansthey sell.
Circle some coins to make 25.
Draw a picture o yoursel sharing some chocolate with acocoa armer.

Here is a picture o some children who were made to work as slaves
on cocoa arms.
Some armers have also cut down
the rainorest to grow more cocoa
to sell. This has taken homes rom
birds and other animals that need
the rainorest. Some o these armers
also use chemicals to keep away bugs
How do you think they eel?How would you eel i youwere them?
These boys wererescued but others arestill working as slaves

and diseases. These chemicals make
the water and air dirty. Many o the
people and animals who breathe the
dirty air and drink the dirty water get
very sick.
8/8/2019 Wire Frame Ftc
10/21
Fortunately, people are trying to fx
these problems.
Some chocolate companies in
the United States are trying to end
child slavery on cocoa arms.
They are also helping armers grow
cocoa in ways that are good or the
earth.
These are very good things or
companies to do!
But, these companies still have not
agreed to pay armers enough or
their cocoa.
This means that many children
will still have to work hard so their
amilies will have enough money to
buy ood and clothes and go to the
doctor.
How does this make you eel? Do you thinkarmers should get more money or theircocoa?
A lot o people think so. People like this set up something
called the Fair Trade system.
The Fair Trade system gives armers at least 80
or each pound o their cocoa. This gives armers enough
to buy ood and clothes, go to the doctor, and send their
children to school. Hooray!
Circle some coins to make 80.

Tell your riends and amily to write letters, too! I we
all ask companies to sell Fair Trade, they will know how
important it is and they will do it!
Fair Trade chocolate is sold by only
a ew small companies in the United
States. Big companies do not sell
Fair Trade chocolate. Cocoa armers
do not get a air price or most o the
chocolate we eat.
Tell them that you are sad that cocoa armers do not get
paid enough and that some even use child slaves. Tell
them you are sad that many children work on cocoa arms
instead o going to school. Ask them to start selling Fair
