As most people can tell you, Miami Beach has become one of the most progressive cities in the country when it comes to LGBT equality. Every single piece of LGBT legislation pre-sented to the Miami Beach Com-mission has passed unanimously, providing security and ensuring equality for our community. That is why so many of us were

shocked when the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida filed a lawsuit against the City of Miami Beach Police Department for unlawfully targeting, harassing, and arresting gay men.

There has always been speculation that this was happen-ing, but there has never been any solid proof until March 12, 2009 when former Miami Beach resident Harold Strickland was wrongfully arrested for simply reporting police brutality – and it was all caught on audio tape by the Miami Beach Police Department’s own emergency response department.

While walking alongside the west side of Flamingo Park and chatting with his sister on his cell phone, Har-old spotted two undercover officers chasing a young guy through the Flamingo Park parking lot. Harold watched as the officers dragged the man to the ground, hand-cuffed him, and began beating him. The sad part was that the man lived in an apartment building only a few yards away and was just walking home.

As cell phone records confirm, Harold told his sister he

would call her back and, at 1:05 a.m., he called 911. Harold reported to the emergency dispatch officer at MBPD that the two undercover officers had handcuffed the man, who was on the ground next to a car, and were kicking him “like his head was a football.”

While on the phone with the dispatcher, Harold had at-tracted the attention of the two officers beating the guy on the ground; they approached Strickland, demanded to know what he was doing, took Strickland’s telephone, and ended his 911 call.

After telling the officers that he was on the phone with 911 because they were attacking the guy, the officers told him, “We know what you’re doing here. We’re sick of all the fucking fags in the neighborhood.” The officers then pushed Harold to the ground and tied his hands behind his back.

While Harold was on the ground, the officers continued to spew anti-gay epithets. They called him a “fucking fag” and told him he was going to “get it good in jail”. When one officer continued to hurl anti-gay slurs, Harold told them he was going to report them. In response, the officers told him that people like him “disappear every day.”

Afterwards, the officers took Harold to the Miami Beach Police Department where he was charged with loitering and prowling. Here’s the other problem – both officers’ accounts of what took place that night differ in a variety of ways. After filing a lawsuit against the MBPD on be-half of Harold, the ACLU secured depositions from both officers, each providing a completely different story.

The evidence was stacked against the officers and the MBPD – so much so, the City of Miami Beach settled with the ACLU and Harold for an undisclosed amount.

Now you would think that these two officers would have been immediately dismissed while the State held its crimi-nal investigation. Sadly that is not the case.

Officers Hazzi and Forte were just placed on desk duty with no change in compensation. A little more than a year later, the State kicked the investigation back to the Internal Affairs Division of the MBPD, stating that they could not charge the officers with any criminal charges – meaning that these officers got away with at least one known hate crime and who knows how many others, all while sporting a MBPD uniform!

To make matters worse, it is now up to Chief Carlos Noriega and the MBPD Internal Affairs division to de-cide if these men get to keep their job! Are they crazy!

In a recent meeting with Miami Beach Police De-partment Public Information Officer Juan San-chez I was told that these officers could potentially get a slap on the wrist as small as suspension without pay! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?

That is not only embarrassing for the City of Miami Beach, its residents, and more importantly the Miami Beach Police Department, it is also incomprehensible.

I am asking that all Miami Beach residents, visitors, com-munity organizations, and Miami Beach officers demand that these two officers be terminated immediately!

Many of us love social media for both our personal and business lives and spend a fair amount of time on Facebook and Twitter every week communicating with friends, acquaintances, customers, readers, and total strangers designated as “Friends” by the market-ing cash machine called Facebook. Heck, many people I know simply cannot live without their daily Facebook and Twitter fix! – oh, and some Myspace too… As social media has exploded with a vengeance, so has the battle to make billions of dollars out of human interaction in this relatively

new, very powerful medium. There is a reason every major brand and media company is on Facebook and Twitter and constantly bombards us with following or friending them for the latest and greatest updates, promotions, photos, videos, breaking news, etc. We also love this because social media information is constantly at our fingertips on our computers, cell phones, or iPads – sorry, tablets.

The challenge is how to keep up and where to invest our time creating our social net-works. Remember Myspace? Some people still do, but millions have left it! Same thing happened to AOL, once the leading portal and email service. Like most people, I gave up my AOL email account a long time ago. I don’t even remember what the email ad-dress actually was. I do, however, have a few gmail accounts for both personal and business stuff and actively use them daily.

LinkedIn now calls itself the “world’s largest professional network” and states over 100 million professionals use it to exchange information, ideas, and opportunities – in some ways it is just like Facebook, but anyone looking to make billions needs an angle, so professional networks has proven to be a good one. LinkedIn just surpassed Myspace in terms of traffic to become the number two most visited social networking site in the United States. LinkedIn’s initial public offering in the stock market generated a lot of buzz – and cash – allowing it to reach an all-time high of 33.9 million unique visitors in June compared to Myspace’s 33.5 million unique visitors (down from 34.9 million in May). That’s a lot of people to market to! Twitter reached a new record from U.S. traffic in June with over 30.6 million unique visitors, compared to 27 million in May – that’s really nice growth.

Facebook also reached a new record in traffic from the U.S. in June. According to com-Score, Facebook captured 160.8 million unique U.S. visitors in June, up from 157.2 million in May. Facebook was also happy to let the world know it surpassed 750 million active users the world over the same month. This is what keeps Google execs up late at night and has them worried. Eyeballs mean billions of dollars in search and advertis-ing revenue.

Have you noticed how many people now search for stuff right from their Facebook account, bypassing Google all together? – oh yea, they also skip all the other search engines struggling to compete with Google. The Google Chrome browser may have helped the ubiquitous big G a bit because those of us who use it can type stuff straight into the url box - skipping the search engine box and giving Google tons of data to predict how to make money from us.

However, Google is petrified of Facebook and the change in consumer search patterns. That is also why you hear so much hype about the stratospheric future market value of Facebook when it goes public. So much search and advertising revenue, so little time to pocket it all! Enter the Google+ Social Network. If you know how people live their lives and how they build relationships and with whom, don’t you pretty much know what they like and what stuff to sell them? Yep you do! So does Facebook, and Google urgently needs a slice of that billion-dollar pie.

The business world is ultra-competitive and brutal when billions are at stake. Once mighty titans like AOL, Yahoo, and Myspace are struggling to stay relevant and alive

today. Billions in revenue and stock market value have come and gone - no different than the history of once mighty steel giants, venerable car companies, and well-know retailers that no longer exist. Google has billions today. Will it tomorrow? We don’t know. What we do know is that another social media site is now available to make “Friends” and “Like” people so large multi-billion dollar corporations can get to know you very well and make tons of money from you!

So what’s a social media junky to do? Well, bite the bullet and get on board of course. If you use social media a lot, you have to board the Google+ train and see where it takes you. At least for a little while until you decide to get off at the next stop. Google+ is still in the restricted test phase, but it will open up sooner rather than later. The real question is how to keep up with all this social media stuff?

All of us still have to work hard for a living in a struggling economy. It feels like we need an assistant just to help us keep up with social media these days. Yep, we really do. Allow me to introduce Jesse Spencer, my new assistant and a great addition to the Wire family. We believe in being Wired Everywhere for you and are working very hard to share as much real content as possible with our readers and event attendees through all our media assets. See you in socialmedialand!

This week and last week have probably been the busiest weeks ever for Thomas and I working on wire magazine. Why? For a couple of very good reasons: We have been working very hard on producing our second ever Pride collector’s edition of wire magazine – that we think you will really enjoy reading through. In

addition, we have also been working non-stop on the first ever official Gay Pride Pool Party, which Wire magazine will host on Saturday, April 17th at the hotel Victor with Finlandia Vodka and herradura Tequila as sponsors.

It really is hard to believe that a year has already gone by since we published the first ever Pride Collector’s Edition of Wire magazine, but that is definitely the case. Pride is once again taking place in miami Beach this Saturday and we hope that all our readers in miami and Fort lauderdale will have a chance to enjoy this week’s 2010 Pride Collector’s Edition. We couldn’t have gotten here without all your support, and the support of our advertisers, sponsors, and all the members of the Wire staff. Thanks very much to everyone for helping us make this possible!

We also hope that you will be able to participate in the Pride festivities on Saturday, plus many of the ancillary

events and parties taking place before and after Saturday’s parade, Expo, and day of fabulous live entertainment. That’s why we are including a comprehensive Pride Guide that you can use as your map of what to participate in, with the days and times to be there.

We also want to extend a warm Wire invitation and welcome you to join us for the first ever official Gay Pride Pool Party at the hotel Victor, 1144 ocean Drive. We decided to put together a unique event for you during this year’s Pride, courtesy of Wire magazine, to celebrate and have fun in the company of friends. The pool party will complement the Parade, Expo, and live entertainment on the main stages of Pride, and will give everyone an opportunity for some additional fun at the poolside party taking place from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. this Saturday. DJs charlmix and miik will be spinning, while everyone enjoys their 2 complimentary Finlandia vodka cocktails included with their ticket purchase.

make sure to stop by our Wire magazine booth to pick up your copy of this week’s special issue of Wire and enter our contest, but definitely stop by and visit us in person at the hotel Victor to celebrate Pride during the day with us at the pool party. We will be camping out at the Victor to bring you some additional fun in the sun. Wire also wants to welcome

our pool party VIP ticket holders. Thanks for purchasing all the VIP tickets we had available (VIP is SOLD OUT). The hotel Victor pool deck will be a great place for our VIP ticket holders to hang out from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and view the Pride Parade from above.

To join us for the pool party after the VIP Parade viewing, visit www.thepinkdollar.com/pridepp to purchase your tickets at the pre-event price, or stop by the hotel Victor on Saturday and buy your ticket at the door. You will receive 2 complimentary Finlandia vodka cocktails, plus be able to partake in an official Pride event that Wire magazine has worked very hard to put together for you. Oh, and did you hear? Some Papi underwear models will be at the pool party wearing their latest collections?

have a wonderful week, and feel free to stop us on the streets of miami, the Beaches, and Fort Lauderdale to share your thoughts and ideas with Wire magazine. We welcome your feedback and suggestions to continue providing great lifestyle content for our readers.

very year, many of us dread the arrival of the sum-mer. Between the overwhelming heat and the lack of social functions and events, the summer months just seem to be a void in time that we have to experience until the fabulous fall season arrives.

Well, I don’t know about you, but that is certainly not how I feel this year! Hotels like the Fontainebleau, The W, and The Ritz Carlton, among many others, are experiencing 100 per-cent occupancy, restaurants are still being filled to capacity, and there seems to be an endless supply of events and func-tions to attend throughout our fair city.

One place that has definitely maintained momentum through-out the summer is the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. This summer, they have continued to provide us with as-sortment of top-notch productions!

On Friday, July 26th, the Arsht Center will welcome another fabulous production that is sure to mesmerize thousands – Cirque Éloize iD.

Hailed by the Montreal Gazette as “a thrilling piece of work, full of attitude, energy and invention,” iD was created by Jean-not Painchaud, founder and artistic director of Montreal’s ac-claimed Cirque.

The show is a completely innovative take on the cirque pro-ductions, as it blends the urban world of hip hop with the classical beauty of circus performance and theatrics. The high-energy, all-musical spectacle (there’s no spoken word), features an original electronic score composed by Jean-Phi Goncalves (from the indie band Beast) and Alex McMahon, which features a Spanish-language hip-hop number among

other electropop, dance, and vocal tracks. The creative team also features hip-hop choreographer Mourad Merzouki and costumes by Linda Brunelle.

iD is the seventh original production from Cirque Éloize. Since it began in 1993, Cirque Éloize has become a world leader in contemporary circus arts, with almost 4,000 performances in more than 400 cities around the globe to its credit. The award-winning company has enjoyed rave reviews and sold-out en-gagements at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals and theatres, including Edinburgh International Festival, the Hollywood Bowl, Théâtre du Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées, Sadler’s Wells and the Barbican Theatre. And now you will get to see them in our very own backyard.

I recently caught up with creator Jeannot Painchaud to get a behind the scenes look at Cirque Éloize iD, and what I discov-ered made me even more excited to see the production!

Check out what he had to say:

What does Cirque Éloize mean?

“Éloize” is a word originating from the Acadian patois mean-ing “heat lightning”. It is commonly used in the Magdalen Islands, an archipelago in the heart of the St-Lawrence Gulf, some 200 km off the coast of Quebec where I was born and raised until I came to Montreal to study the art of circus at the Montreal National Circus School.

All seven artists from Cirque Éloize’s first troupe were natives of the islands; the lightening really symbolizes the heat and energy that feed the troupe’s spirit.

WIRE COVER: CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD @ THE ARSHT CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Have you been to Miami before? What are you looking forward to most about bringing your show to the Arsht Center?

I personally have been to Miami several times, but this is the first time a troupe from Cirque Éloize will be performing in this beautiful city. When I first met Scott Shiller and we discussed the possibility of presenting iD at the Adrienne Arsht Center, it struck me how Miami is the perfect city to present this show. Miami is young, urban, lively, very trendy, and it loves to party. And so does our show. I felt right away that iD would be a Miami crowd pleaser.

How did the show come about?

With each new creation, we like to integrate different forms of art to the acrobatics. I was yearning to bring an urban kind of energy to the slate, especially break dancing. There are very many similarities between the life of an urban dancer and a cirque artist. For one, the starting point comes from the heart and the soul, not from the head.

I was fascinated by the dynamism of the urban dance scene and the idea of the challenge, the battle. In a cirque production, each artist aims to claim its identity while identifying with the group, which is very similar to a break dancing artist.

In the cirque world, as well as in the dance world, one expresses his identity and his individuality using the body. Then, this becomes the main tool to insert into a group. Dancers and cirque artists are taking the same path to reach the goal.

Who was the creator of the show, and how did he come up with the theme/concept?

After a few trips to South Korea, where I witnessed the bubbling youth opening up to western culture, I felt the need to create a piece that would transmit the energy I felt over there. The inspiration I brought back from South Korea was the trigger for all of this.

I, for one, was the initiator of the project, but like any other project, we need to surround ourselves with other creatives.

When creating a cirque show, I always start with the music, as it is the most important piece of the puzzle for me. For this matter, I called in two excellent Mon-treal musicians, including Jean-Phi Goncalvez from the famous Montreal independent band Beast and his part-ner Alex McMahon. Once that was settled, we started working on the visual environment. For this part, I chose to work with Robert Massicotte, who conceived the whole scenography with his partner Alexis Laurence.

Then there was the acrobatics. In the process, I con-

tinued working with longtime friend and collaborator Krzysztof Soroczynski, Cirque Éloize’s Head Trainer and Talent Scout who, for one thing, brought a lot to the conception of the actual trampowall in iD.

Once we had these three major pieces together, we worked on costumes, make-up, and hair. I chose to work with long time Cirque Éloize collaborators such as Linda Brunelle (costumes), Suzanne Trépanier (make-up), and Pierre Lafontaine (hair).

What other productions have you worked on?

I am the Artistic Director for all Cirque Éloize produc-tions since 1993. I have worked with many directors that have a theater and contemporary dance back-ground. Each time, I wanted to bring an external ele-ment to the cirque art in order to transcend it and make it better and different.

I like to invite creatives that don’t know acrobatics. They bring a new artistic vision that causes us to rein-vent ourselves each time.

What is the concept/story?

Sixteen artists on stage, ten circus disciplines, and then the discovery of a world which is new to us, that of urban dances such as breakdance and hip-hop.

I imagined this show at the heart of a city, where the omnipresence of image causes us to lose our reference points. I sought to create an estheticism at the cross-roads of comic books, science-fiction movies, and the rich universe of graffiti.

The decidedly rock, electronic, and poetic music, cou-pled with the presence of video, highlight the show’s playful, energetic, youthful, and urban aspects.

In the middle of this city exists a public place. A pub-lic place, as a spot where one can seek refuge and escape anonymity, to express one’s individuality, and affirm one’s identity in order to reclaim possession of public space. It is an area in the city for encounters, a site of passage, a hood where clans confront one an-other, and where friendships are woven. Where love is created and dissolved.

How is this production different from any other show people have experienced before?

Energy! And also the integration of multimedia projec-tions as a part of the scenario. Each scene represents different places of an imaginary city. It is kind of a mid-dle of the road between reality and a cartoon movie. Finding the performers must be a daunting task. How do you find just the right person for the job?

It is an everyday challenge, but we reinvent ourselves every time. The very specific aspect of Cirque Éloize is

that we bring forward each artist’s personality onto to the stage. Choosing a performer is a delicate task and each time we need to replace one, we not only need to look for his or her acrobatic performance skills but we also have to consider his or her multiple talents and personality.

In terms of costume design, how did you de-velop the look and feel?

What you see on the streets is what you see in the show. We are inspired by street wear. The challenge is to create casual street looking costumes in which our artists are at ease to perform their acrobatics.

What has the response been to the show?

With iD, we have been blessed. Everybody enjoys the show so much. Many of the cities where we have played so far welcomed the show very warmly and the critics have been raving.

Why do you think people have been so re-ceptive to the story?

I think they have been receptive to it because it is very actual, in a sense that it reflects a lot of what is going on in every major city in the world right now; but it is also a story of all times: gangs, clans, love stories, public space to escape and be.

The way we live today is, in many ways, very different from the prior generations, but the human needs, for

WIRE COVER: CIRQUE ÉLOIZE iD @ THE ARSHT CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

territory, friendship, recognition, and a love is a never ending story.

What are some of the highlights?

It is hard for me to choose one number over another, but I definitively see our trampowall act as one major crowd pleaser, as well as the bike stunts, the aerial silk and rollers, and the dance-contortion acts.

How did you get connected with the Arsht Center?

I knew about the Adrienne Arsht Center by its good reputation. I knew that they were professional and se-rious people. Once I had a professional meeting in Miami with several people and I met Scott Shiller. After meeting him, it became obvious that he and his team were the right people to work with in Miami.

TOP TRAX: BEYONCÉ BREAKS THE 4TH WALL

When you think of the journey Beyoncé has had throughout her career, it’s amazing to see she’s not only survived, but also dominated the pop music scene on more than one occasion. From her tumultuous days in the female-quintet-turned-trio, Destiny’s Child, to the con-troversy surrounding her recently terminated business re-lationship with her father; B has always faced obstacles head-on and with dignity, while other artists just ended up as chum for the media sharks. Now Beyoncé faces her greatest challenge of all — a follow up to her 2008 masterpiece, “I Am…Sasha Fierce”. On her third solo album Beyoncé (aka Sasha Fierce) ruled the radio with tracks like “Halo”, “Sweet Dreams”, and, of course, the #1 worldwide anthem “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)”. But with all the success of her last album comes the pressure of pulling it together again with fresh new material that can live up to fans’ high expectations without going too far. Judging by their reactions to her latest collection, “4”, it looks like the diva just might have found their sweet spot.

“4” kicks off with the slow jam, “1+1.” What the song lacks in BPMs it makes up for in pure raw emotion as Mrs. Jay-Z pleas for her man to make love to her. This is some baby-makin’ stuff right here, boys and girls! You would think a strong ballad opener would be followed-up by a hot dance floor, thrashing track for a little balance, but in this case you’d be wrong. “I Care” is yet another slow tempo track oozing with Beyoncé’s classic growl eventually rising to effortless wails and notes that would make Mariah a little jealous. To my surprise, “4” con-tinues the ballad triple play with; you guessed it, another slow jam. The stripped down “I Miss You” co-produced by Shea Taylor hangs on no more than B’s breathy vocals, a light baseline, and synth strings. It’s a nice com-pliment to the over-the-top production of 4’s first single “Run the World (Girls)”, but we’ll get to that later.

It wouldn’t be a proper diva album without the obliga-tory “f*ck you” track and Miss B does not disappoint. Without sacrificing the sass-with-class attitude we’ve all grown to love, she picks up the pace long enough to let a man from her past know just how much better off she is without him on “The Best Thing I Never Had.” The second official single off the album has already spawned remixes by Hector Fonseca and DJ Escape officially elevating it to dance floor anthem status. So exes: be-

ware! The deceitfully titled “Party” (featuring André 3000 and Kanye West) should have been called “Just Chillin”. The slow-tempo track doesn’t do much to get me ready for a night on the town. But if your idea of a party is a night at home 420-style, then pop the track and light it up, baby! “Rather Die Young”, “Start Over”, and the upbeat “Love on Top” take me back to the more soulful days of pop when R&B queens like Ro-berta Flack, Rose Royce, and Patti LaBelle ruled the airwaves with their smooth, funky vibe.

One of the biggest surprises in the mix is “Countdown”. What starts off as an easy, breezy melody suddenly kicks into a fun, fast-paced ride through a typical night out with Beyoncé and her man. Thankfully the beat goes on with “End of Time”; another percussion-heavy track driven by a marching band beat and catchy melody that could easily make this the next single. We’ll have to wait and see. Saving the best for (almost) last, Beyoncé reunites with her “Halo” co-writer Ryan Tedder and the legend-ary Diane Warren for one final swan song, “I Was Here”. You can hear her sense of peace and fulfillment as she sings: “I wanna leave my footprints on the sands of time / Know there was something that / Meant some-thing that I left behind / When I leave this world / I’ll leave no regrets / I’ll leave something to remember / So they won’t forget / I was here.” Finally, in true diva style our girl closes out the set with the lead single “Run the World (Girls)”. Surprisingly, the track didn’t get much props from the fans or critics compared to the rest of the album. Yet it still managed to peak at #1 on the US Hot Dance Club charts.

Beyoncé could have easily stuck to the same formula that took Sasha Fierce to #1 status. But instead she chose to take a few risks, selling over 300,000 copies in its first week. “4” is by no means a pop album, but evidence of Beyoncé’s growth as an artist. Even the title represents a strong personal connection between her and her work. In an interview with Billboard, she mentioned her birth-day, her mother’s birthday, and her wedding day are on the fourth day of the month. “4” is also Beyoncé’s 4th solo album to debut at #1 proving 2 is company, 3’s a party, and 4 is fabulous!
