Technical terms

WLL: (Working Load Limit) maximum weight that the accessory is allowed to lift (in metric tons orWLL: (Working Load Limit) maximum weight that the accessory is allowed to lift (in metric tons or in kg)

BL: (Breaking Load) minimum force needed to break a cable (in N or in kN)

R ti T t l f t i ith t th lifti t ( T + P l d)Rating: Total mass of a container without the lifting set (= Tare + Payload)

Tare: Mass of the container when empty

Payload: Maximum mass that can be transported by a container (P= R-T)

Fore runner / top leg: Single leg sling used to elongate a 4 legs sling (the assemble can be referred as 5 legs sling), often used for DNV 2.7-1 lifting set fabrication to allow the top link to arrive at the correct elevation

Angle: Unless otherwise notified, the angle used to define a sling is always the angle between one leg and the vertical (in degrees)

Swaging: Method of assembly by pressing a ferrule containing the cable between dies of specificSwaging: Method of assembly, by pressing a ferrule containing the cable between dies of specific dimensions

DAF: (Dynamic Amplification Factor) Enhancement factor of the WLL to take the movement of the load into account

EN 13414-1 reviewLimitations:

Wire rope sling fabrication, from 8 to 60mmSpecific markingp gSwaging conform to EN 13411-3WLL to be calculated for angles from 0° to 45° from vertical (and from 45° to 60° for some specific assemblies)p )The weakest part must be the cable, not the top linkShackles must have higher WLL than the leg they are connected toCalculation of the WLL for usual cases:Calculation of the WLL for usual cases:

For 1 leg sling: WLL = (BLmin x KT) / (g x ZP), with:

BLmin = Minimum Breaking Load of the cable (given by the supplier)

ZP = 5 (safety factor)

g = 9.80665 N/kg

KT = termination coefficient (0.9 for swage assembly)

For multi legs sling: WLL = (BLmin x KT x KL) / (g x ZP), with:

KL = coefficient for leg number and angle = Nlegs x cos(β), with β = 45°

KL = 1.4 for 2 legs slings, and KL = 2.1 for 3 and 4 legs slings (4 legs slings are calculated as 3 legs slings)

How to chose a lifting set ?Number of legs:Number of legs:

Given by the design of the equipment to lift

Requested certificationOffshore or onshore ?

One time lift for installation or movable equipment ?

Company specificationsCompany specifications

Calculation of the minimum WLL of the slingWeight of the equipment to lift

DAF to apply (generally given by Company specification)Example: in TOTAL specifications, DAF = 1.30 for offshore lifting (<150T), and DAF = 1.10 for onshore

Use of a spreader bar:Use of a spreader bar:Can lower the stress on the equipment during lifting

Can reduce the length of the sling

C ll b tt t l f th lifti ( i ll f l f b i t )Can allow better control of the lifting (especially useful for subsea equipments)

May modify the stability of the equipment (to be checked in every particular case)

Must be subject to specific calculation note

Some answers to the most frequent questions you have:

Why are you only using cables from diameter 18 to 32mm for DNV lifting sets ?Even for the low ratings, the minimum WLL is 7000 kg (DNV 2.7-1, table 8-1)

Reference to EN 13414-1 for the cable BLmin = (WLL x g x ZP) / (KT x KL) with:

ZP = 5 (safety factor)

9 80665 N/kg = 9.80665 N/kg

KT = 0.9 (for swage termination)

KL = 2.1

BLmin = 179 840 N for the cable of a 4 leg sling

18mm is the smallest cable size with BL > 179 840 N not allowed to use smaller

We use the same calculation for the maximum size, maximum rating is 25T, that gives a WLL

of 27 590 kg BLmin = 708 830 N

32mm is the smallest cable size with BL > 708 830 N no need to use bigger

Some answers to the most frequent questions you have:

What standards could I follow for a load > 25T as DNV 2.7-1 can’t apply?

First of all, the standard of each Company should apply

For onshore or one time lifting offshore, EN 13414-1 is most often used

DAF might be added for offshore use

DNV 2.7-3 Standard covers offshore equipments that are regularly lifted, up to 50T

No specific description of lifting sets

Reference to DNV 2.7-1 same lifting sets up to 25T

Above 25T, enhancement factor can be extrapolate at the constant value of 1.1

For other cases, a specific calculation note can be done for the lifting set

Some answers to the most frequent questions you have:

Can you certify an existing sling ?We can only make a certificate of conformity for our own manufactured products

Several issues occur to certify a sling fabricated by another manufacturer:What material was used ? It is not possible to check the steel grade of the wire rope by mere visual

inspection

How was it assembled ? The process of assembly and the quality control along it are critical for the

certification of the final product

Alternative: we can make a load test under third party surveyAlternative: we can make a load test under third party survey

Can you assemble a sling using our own material ?Yes, if the material is compatible with our fabrication process

But the certification of the assembly is subject to the material certificate

Can you modify an existing sling ?Only if the sling was manufactured by ORSLING (same issues as for certification)
