WISCONSIN REMAINS PERFECT AT HOME AGAINST NO. 4 INDIANA WITH 0-0 TIE MAYHEM IN MARYLAND

In a deciding game for second place in the Big Ten conference between Wisconsin (8-3-3 overall, 3-2-2 Big Ten) and Indiana (8-1-6 overall, 2-0-5 Big Ten), neither team notched a point on the scoreboard and the game ended in a 0-0 (2OT) tie.

Wisconsin pasted shot after shot on the Indiana goal but couldn’t knock the lid off the net.

In their closest opportunity, junior Christopher Mueller took a free kick and rocketed a liner to the top left post. Moments later, the junior danced around an Indiana defender and set a shot toward the net that froze the keeper, but bent around the target by inches.

Mueller wasn’t the only player in Cardinal and White to put shots up for the Badgers as Wisconsin led in shots, 17-7, going into the overtime.

Leading the shot charge was junior Tom Barlow with five shots. Juniors Mark Segbers and Chris Mueller also accounted for a piece of the shot deficit, recording four and three, respectively.

Play resumed in a back-and-forth manner in the overtime periods but the Badger backline was able to hold off Indiana after they were awarded with four-straight cor-ner kicks. Wisconsin also had its fair share of corners as the Badgers tied a season high with seven corners.

UW held the Hoosiers, who rank second in the nation in shots per game (17.57), to 14 shots in the game. Wisconsin was out-shooting Indiana 11-2 at the half and 4-1 in shots on goal, and finished outshooting IU 18 to 14.

Wisconsin has now built a success-ful resume against ranked opponents. Wisconsin led the No. 1 ranked Maryland Terrapins 2-1 with three minutes left before losing 3-2 in overtime. Wisconsin also tied top-25 ranked Michigan State 1-1 on the road and now Indiana 0-0 at home.

BROOMS OUT: IN-STATE SWEEP COMPLETE

For the first time since 2008, the Wisconsin men’s soccer team completed the in-state sweep, defeating Milwaukee 3-0, after trouncing both Marquette and Green Bay earlier this season.

The crowd was saying all hail senior Brian Hail in the ninth minute of the game as he put the Badgers on the board first against the Panthers.

The St. Louis, Missouri, native used the assist from juniors Christopher Mueller and Mark Segbers to beat the keeper on a ball played across the goal from the end line to score. The sinker was Hail’s first goal of the season and second of his career.

Mueller had himself quite the night, accounting for the assists on two of the other goals and scoring one of his own in the 52nd minute.

After a scrappy foul from Milwaukee against Mike Catalano, Wisconsin earned the penalty kick, where Mueller handily delivered the second score of the game.

Mueller extended his offensive prowess for the final time in the 70th minute after a foul on the Panthers resulted in a free kick from far out. Mueller notched a bent ball across the box, where teammate and captain Sam Brotherton delicately flicked the ball backward into the net.

UNLIKELY HERO Senior Matej Radonic scored his second career goal against No. 21 Michigan State on Sunday but it’s not the first time he has found success against the Spartans.

Radonic scored his first career goal against the Spartans two years ago in 2014.

He also scored against Green Bay in the very next match, the third goal of his career.

MAKING HISTORY Sophomore defender Sam Brotherton made Wisconsin men’s soccer history, becoming the program’s first individual to be named National Soccer Coaches

Association of America Player of the Week, as announced by the NSCAA on Tuesday.

The team captain led the Badgers in back-to-back home shutouts, anchoring a backline that blanked St. Louis, 2-0, and Big Ten foe Rutgers, 1-0. The Auckland, New Zealand, native recorded his first career goal and the lone score of the game against the Scarlet Knights on Saturday.

Brotherton was a 2015 All-Big Ten Freshman honoree for the Badgers after starting all 17 games he played for Wisconsin.

RPI UPDATE UW moved up to 76th in the RPI rankings. The Indiana Hoosiers, who are on tap for UW later this week, are 29th in the RPI.

CATALANO THE CATALYST A game-securing goal and a game-winning assist last week earned Wisconsin men’s soccer junior Mike Catalano a well-deserved national nod, as he was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week, on Tuesday.

Catalano became just the sixth player in pro-gram history to earn the distinction and the first since 2013, when NSCAA All-American AJ Cochran garnered the award.

Catalano produced the insurance goal in UW’s 2-0 victory over Saint Louis last Tuesday, registering three shots and one shot on goal in the match. He didn’t turn down the heat in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Rutgers, making a slick move through traffic before slotting the game-winner to Sam Brotherton for the game-winning assist. He also tallied a team-high two shots on goal against the Scarlet Knights.

Catalano, a member of the 2014 Big Ten All-Freshman team and 2015 Academic All-Big Ten team, leads the Badgers in assists (2) and ranks second on the team in points (6) this season.

ANSWERING THE CALL Wisconsin men’s soccer sophomore defender Sam Brotherton has been called up to compete with the New Zealand national team in the All Whites’ 2016 USA Tour.

The Oceania Football Confederation Nations Cup champions will play an international friendly against Mexico on Oct. 8 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee and the United States on Oct. 11 at the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington D.C.

The All Whites have played the USA only twice in their history. They lost 2-1 at Richmond, Virginia, in 2003 when Vaughan Coveny was on the scoresheet for New Zealand and they went down 2-1 in Guadalajara in the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup when Chris Zoricich scored his only international goal with a late free-kick.

Both competitions against the U.S. and Mexico will help prepare the All Whites for the OFC Stage Three Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup in 2016-17 and the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.

Brotherton and the New Zealand national team captured the OFC Nations Cup title in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea last summer.

In the championship game, Brotherton started and played the full 120 minutes for the All Whites, who defeated host Papua New Guinea on penalty kicks, 4-2, to capture the tourna-ment title. The Badgers’ captain this season, Brotherton started all five matches for New Zealand at the OFC Nations Cup.

HAPPY HUNDRED Head Coach John Trask earned his 100th career victory after the Badger’s win over the Saint Louis Bilikens on Tuesday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex.

OUR HOUSE: BADGERS REMAIN PERFECT AT HOME IN 1-0 WIN OVER RUTGERS

The Wisconsin men’s soccer team continued their Big Ten journey at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Saturday night against Rutgers, protecting its home turf in a 1-0 shutout win against the Scarlet Knights.

The Badgers found the back of the net in the 35th minute when Mike Catalano danced through an opening, beating the goalie and defender in the process, and found a wide open Sam Brotherton who used a line-drive finish to give the Badgers the 1-0 lead.

Although the Badgers didn’t tally another score, their stifling offensive pressure proved potential for the remainder of the season to come.

Schilling got the start in net for UW, recording three saves on the day and his third shutout of the season. His spotlight save of the night came in the first minute of play when the Rutgers tested his hands with a hard strike to the bottom corner of the net that was swatted away by the Badger keeper.

The Badgers led corner kicks five to four. Shots were tied between the two teams at 13 apiece. Junior Tom Barlow led the Badgers in shots with three, including one shot on goal.

NO BLUES TODAY: BADGERS SHUT OUT SAINT LOUIS AT HOME

The Wisconsin men’s soccer team bounced back from a loss over the weekend in mighty fashion, dominating the Saint Louis Bilikens 2-0 in a rainy and cold contest at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Tuesday night.

It didn’t take long for Badgers to find their niche on their home turf. In the 12th minute of play, junior forward Christopher Mueller scored a mesmerizing free kick goal from 25 yards out that sailed over the Bilikens’ goalkeeper’s hands and into the upper right corner of the net.

The rest of the first half was quiet for both teams, as possession in the middle half of the field was the overarching theme.

Later into the second half, senior Brian Hail played a perfect ball across his body to a flee-ing Isaac Schlenker. The sophomore gathered the ball and drove it further down the sideline before notching a ball to junior Mike Catalano in the middle of the box for a booming finish. BADGERS WELCOME THE LEATHERNECKS ON TUESDAY NIGHT

Fresh off posting two back-to-back home shut-outs, the Wisconsin men’s soccer team prepares to host its last non-conference opponent of the regular season when it welcomes Western Illinois to the McClimon soccer complex on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

The Badgers (8-3-3 overall, 3-2-2 Big Ten) are coming off a scoreless tie against fourth-ranked Indiana.

Mueller wasn’t the only player in Cardinal and White to put shots up for the Badgers against the Hoosiers, as Wisconsin led in shots, 17-7, headed into overtime. Leading the shot charge was junior Tom Barlow with five shots. Juniors Mark Segbers and Chris Mueller also accounted for a piece of the shot deficit, recording four and three, respec-tively.

Wisconsin has now built a successful resume against ranked opponents. Wisconsin led the No. 1 ranked Maryland Terrapins, 2-1, with three minutes left before losing in overtime. Wisconsin also tied top-25 ranked Michigan State, 1-1, on the road and Indiana at home. The overtime match was the seventh of the season for the Badgers and their second at home. UW is 2-2-3 in over-time matches this year.

Junior goalkeeper Philipp Schilling was the star of the show last week, posting two shutouts against Milwaukee and Indiana.

The Badgers are an unscathed 6-0-1 when playing at the McClimon Soccer Complex this season.

Now a senior, Casey Beyers was in net for the Badgers that game, tallying one save and the shutout. Current junior Brian Hail also saw action in the con-test, recording one shot.

In it last game, Western Illinois fell to Omaha, 2-1. All three goals were scored in the first half. The Leathernecks (6-7-1, 2-2 Summit) struck first in the ninth minute after Jacob Bevan shot the ball inside the box—which was deflected by the keeper—and scored off the rebound.

HEAD COACH JOHN TRASK Through six seasons as head coach of the Wisconsin men’s soccer program, John Trask has revived with the enthusiasm and excitement that once made the program a perennial Big Ten and NCAA title contender. A fixture at the highest levels of national and international soccer for nearly two decades, Trask came to Wisconsin in 2010 with the goal of returning the program to the elite ranks of college soccer. He delivered on that promise in just his fourth year, guiding Wisconsin in 2013 to its first NCAA tournament berth in 18 years and its first postseason win since its national title team in 1995. In the process, Trask also helped the Badgers extend what at that time was the longest home unbeaten streak in the country (14), including UW defeating Milwaukee in the first NCAA tournament men’s soccer game played at the McClimon Complex in nearly two decades. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Trask led UW to 14 victories in 2013, which marked the most in Madison since the team won 20 in 1995. With a reputation for developing talented young men into elite soccer players, Trask also helped a pair of upperclassmen make history in 2013. Tomislav Zadro (Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year) and AJ Cochran (Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year) became the first duo from the same team to sweep the coveted conference awards. After earning NSCAA All-American honors and becoming the first MACC Hermann Trophy semifinalist in UW history, Cochran went on to become the first Wisconsin player selected in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft since 2005, and the first player selected in the first round since Mike Gentile (1995). Trask has established a solid foundation in Madison with the development of young talent. At least one Badger has been named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team in six straight seasons under Trask. Sam Brotherton continued that streak of All-Big Ten Freshman Badgers in 2015, earning selection following a strong debut campaign in Madison. Brotherton went on to earn his first international cap with New Zealand and even started for the All Whites at the 2016 OFC Nations Cup. In 2014, Trask took a young squad of Badgers and developed the team into a group that fought throughout the season and contended with some of the top competition in the country. Perhaps no one benefitted more from the coaching than newcomers Tom Barlow, Mike Catalano and Mark Segbers, who were each named to the 2014 Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Trask led Wisconsin to a 10-win season and a semifinal finish at the Big Ten tournament in 2011. The 10-win season marks the most wins for the Badgers since 2003 when they finished 11-10-1. In Trask’s second season, UW also captured its first true victory at the conference tournament with a 2-0 shutout of Michigan in the first round. One of the highlights of the 2011 campaign came on Oct. 2 when Wisconsin handed then-No.6 Indiana its first loss of the season, marking the first Wisconsin victory over the Hoosiers in 16 years. The Badgers wrapped up their first season under Trask with a semifinal finish at the 2010 Big Ten Tournament. After advancing past defending Big Ten champion Ohio State on penalty kicks in the opening round, Wisconsin fell to eventual Big Ten champion and NCAA College Cup semifinalist Michigan, 1-0, in the semifinal round. UW posted a 4-13-3 overall record for 2010 but went 3-2-1 over its last six games in Trask’s first season. Widely regarded as one of the top coaches in the game, Trask spent five seasons as head coach at the University of Illinois at Chicago before joining the Badgers. He brought 14 years of collegiate coaching experience - along with five seasons spent in Major League Soccer ranks - to Madison. Trask developed the UIC program into a powerhouse that claimed three Horizon League championships and qualified for NCAA tournament play each season from 2006 to 2008. Over that span, Trask’s teams posted a record of 38-13-17 (.648) -- including an amazing 8-2-1 mark in road games against ranked opponents. Also in those three seasons, Trask mentored four All-Americans and six players that earned All-Great Lakes Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He earned Horizon League Coach of the Year honors after leading the Flames to a regular-season conference title and berth in the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2006, a season in which UIC went 13-3-5 and finished with a stellar 0.36 goals-against average that ranks as the fourth-best single-season mark in NCAA history. Trask followed that with another NCAA berth in 2007, as the Flames won the Horizon League tournament title and advanced to the school’s first-ever Elite Eight by winning three-consecutive road games on the way to a No. 10 national ranking at season’s end. The Flames won another regular-season Horizon League title and returned to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2008, a season in which UIC put together a 12-match unbeaten streak and ascended to a No. 4 national ranking. Prior to his return to the college game, Trask spent five seasons as an assistant coach with three Major League Soccer clubs. He spent two seasons with the now-defunct Miami Fusion, which advanced to the final of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in his first season before playing its way into the semifinals of the MLS Playoffs in 2001. Trask then spent two seasons with D.C. United before coaching with FC Dallas in 2004. No stranger to the Big Ten Conference, Trask’s time in professional soccer came after nine years on the coaching staff at his alma mater, Indiana University. In that time, the Hoosiers won eight Big Ten titles, advanced to the NCAA College Cup five times and won back-to-back national titles in 1998 and 1999. A four-year letterwinner for the Hoosiers from 1984-1987, Trask earned a bachelor’s degree in management and a master’s degree in kinesiology from Indiana. A native of Milwaukee, Trask was married to his wife, Jela, in February 2008. The couple has a son, Jack.
