Anyone who purchases a book or VHS at the Friends of the Library “Book Nook” during December will receive a raffle ticket for our “Christmas Basket” raffle. The basket is on display at the Book
Nook. The winning ticket will be drawn at the end of December.
The “Book Nook” is located at the south end of the library. The hours of operation are 10:00-1:00 on Tuesdays and 1:00-4:00 on Saturdays.
Prices are $1 for hard cover books and 50 cents for paperbacks.

The Tackle BoxAs we wind up another year of fishing adventures, let’s take
a moment to reflect on some of the great things we did this fishing season. We were able to use two fishing rods legally in Oregon and had the great potential to land a bumper crop of fish. The fishing season was a wonderful combination of great days and great lakes to fish from, and if we were able to spend it with friends or family, we were even more shined upon.
We had record salmon runs and the crab are still a bumper crop.
For the first time fishing enthusiasts, you are the future of our wonderful sport, and I give you a special “High Five!” and welcome. If it were not for you, we would not be able to share all our time tested secrets and experiences. Thank You!
If you were lucky enough to take a child fishing for the first time, see the face glow when the fish took the bait, and the look of surprise, amazement and awe when they saw the fish for the first time break the water, and the yelps when they touched the wiggling quarry for the first time…priceless.
Looking back, we are a lucky bunch, sharing some of the best fishing, in the best area, using the best resources, and living the best life possible.

Ruth Eleanor Long passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on December 15, 2010 in La Pine, Oregon. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday,
December 28, 2010 at 2:00pm at the Prairie House in La Pine, Oregon. Ruth was born on March 9, 1915 in Seattle, Washington. She graduated from Grant High School and St. Helen’s Hall in Portland, Oregon. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta at Oregon State University, where she met her husband Lynn. They married in Portland on July 1, 1938. They lived in Seattle, Corvallis and Albany until retiring to Tucson, Arizona in 1974. She has resided at the Prairie House in La Pine since 2002. She is survived by her four children, Lynda Klingler, Christie Seeley, Garrett Long, Teri Newcomb and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn M. Long. You’ve probably seen the sport of snowboarding on TV, and if you go skiing with your family from time to time, you may have even seen it in person. Heck, you might have even tried it yourself. Snowboarding may seem like old news to you, but did you know that it is a fairly new sport that started in the 1960s?
In 1965, a man named Sherman Poppen took two skis and tied them together for his daughter to use to surf down the hill outside of their home. Poppen’s daughter enjoyed the toy, and Poppen began selling it to the public the following year under the name of Snufer, a combination of the words “snow” and “surf.”
