November is National Diabetes Month. Dr. Graham Balcer encourages anyone who has, or may be at risk for diabetes to have an annual eye examination.
“Diabetes affects 18.2 million Americans, 5.2 million of which may not know they have the disease,” Dr. Balcer said. “One of the health problems associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, a disease of the eye which can cause blindness.”
Diabetic retinopathy can weaken and cause changes in the blood vessels that nourish the retina. Symptoms may include blurred vision, cloudiness and/or “floaters”.
Diabetes also increases a person’s risk for developing other eye diseases, Dr. Balcer added. Persons living with diabetes are 40% more likely to develop glaucoma and 60% more likely to develop cataracts.
“But the early stages of diabetic retinopathy may produce no visual symptoms at all,” Dr. Balcer said. “That is why it is so important for anyone who has diabetes or a family history of diabetes to have a yearly comprehensive eye health examination. Early detection and treatment are essential,” Dr. Balcer added, “because once damage has occurred, the effects are usually permanent.”

In anticipation of this year’s cold and flu season, Drug Mart Pharmacy, located at the corner of 1st and Huntington (inside the La Pine Medical Center), is offering flu vaccinations for ages 15 and older. All vaccines will be administered by a certified pharmacist. People aged 6 months or older who want to reduce the likelihood of getting the flu should get vaccinated. Annual flu immunization is highly recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for certain groups at a greater risk of having serious flu-related complications or those people living with or caring for high risk persons. Only one flu vaccine is required this season since it will protect against H1N1 as well as the other seasonal flu viruses.The CDC defines people who should get vaccinated each year as:• Children and teens age 6 months through 18 years• Pregnant women• People 50 years of age and older• People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions• People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities• Health care workers and others in close contact with people in the above groups“Immunity from a flu vaccination decreases after a year and the strains of flu infecting the public change, so it’s important to get immunized annually,” says Leah Bishop.The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. According to the CDC, every year in the United States, on average, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications and about 36,000 people die from it. The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated each fall.People can begin to get the seasonal flu vaccine now, and it will continue to be offered while supplies last. retention, and that is great news!The last weather event has made river access rather limited,
but if you check with local regulations on the day, or for the days you want to go, then you will have great potential for having a wonderful day fishing!
The updated regulations can be found on the ODFW website and, as always, better to be safe than sorry, so do check them often, as they do change.
If you have any questions, take the time to ask the officials you see as you are on the water or on the landings, as they are most up to speed and almost always willing to help and offer great information. They have been known to share some fishing tips as well, so don’t be shy, say hi, and see how you can gain from their knowledge. Remember, they are there all the time and see more than our one day or even our one weekend of fishing.
All fishing folks know that fishing can vary from one day to the next and even as often as hour to hour. Relying on information from your buddy who was there a couple of weeks ago may not be as reliable as it was when they were there that day.
Listening to the locals at the tackle shop or local grocery stores when you get your daily snacks or asking them for tips are sometimes a great way to check what is the hot fishing technique for the time you are on the water.
Take the time and opportunity for a late fall fishing trip to the Columbia and be sure to wear your safety flotation devices, as the water conditions this time of the year do change quickly. As always, be aware of those changes, and if you have to pull off due to rough conditions, don’t feel too disappointed; be proud in your decision of making a hard, but more responsible way to go, and be able to get out there another day. Boat safe and boat again!

They worked previously for Hospice in Bend.Jim, what kind of changes have you experienced since you began? “We moved into our new building in 2001. In 2007, we added Transitions to our program – providing volunteer help to people with a life-limiting illness, but who don’t qualify for Hospice.” Jim, who are the main players in your organization? “I am the Executive Director and Gail is the President and is also our Physical Therapist. Diane Sauer, RN is the Clinical Director, and the Medical Director is Ben Chaffey, MD.”How did you happen to come to La Pine? “I grew up in Bend and moved just outside Sunriver in 1987. I started with Home Health and Hospice as a Social Worker in 1990 in La Pine and have not left since.”What is the growth potential of your organization? “It should be pretty good, but there is a lot of uncertainty of what our health system will continue to look like.”What has been your organization’s greatest challenge? “Medicare’s black and white regulations about who can have Hospice. People have to make a tough decision to forego anymore treatment for their disease to have Hospice. They need to be able to have both.”Tell us a little more about your background. “I graduated from Pacifi c University in Social Work. I worked in Bend at J Bar J Youth Services and continued my education through OSU, completing a Master’s Degree in Counseling. I began private practice in counseling in 1989 and started Home Health Care and Hospice work shortly after. I have been visiting people in their homes in La Pine and the surrounding area for 20 years.”What do you do to relax? “I like to golf, hunt, fi sh and ski. La Pine stuff.”What types of community involvement do you participate in? “I am Treasurer and Past President of the La Pine Lions Club as well as an ASPIRE mentor at La Pine High School. I also assist on the Finance Committee at the La Pine Health Center.”What advice would you give to other Community Leaders in the area? “Be involved in making your community a Caring Community.”What are your plans for the future? “Continue our present course. New Art Exhibit at the Sunriver Public Library A new art exhibit opens at the Sunriver Area PublicLibrary on November 1, 2010 and runs through the end ofJanuary 2011. The show will feature the mixed media andsolvent transfer work of local artist Cameron Kaseberg, andjewelry designed by Chandra vanEijnsbergen. Cameron Kaseberg has always been interested inthe creative world -- from finger painting and stitchery tophotography.Hestartedoutcopyingoldphotographsinthedarkroom at Mel O’s Camera Shop inThe Dalles, and wentontobeanewspaperstaffphotographeratLewisandClarkCollege in Portland. It was after classes at Lewis and Clarkand the University of Minnesota that he found himself atPortlandStateUniversity,workingtowardaBachelorsDegreeinDesign.Anditwasherethathefoundhimselfinadrawingclass taught by Mel Katz where he was never required todraw a thing. Instead, he was introduced to a new creativeexperience:thesolventtransferprocess.Thisprocessgainedacceptance in the fine art field when Robert Rauchenbergbegan experimenting with it in the 1950’s. A variety ofsolvents are used to loosen ink from the printed page,such as magazines, photocopies and laser prints. Differentsolvents produce different results. Layering images one ata time, using a paper-to-paper transfer process, Cameroncreates themixedmediasolvent transfer imagesyousee inhiswork.Someareassimpleasoneprint,whileothersmayrequire up to fifteen or more impressions with acrylics andgraphitetoobtainthefinalresults.Usingimagescapturedbyhisowncameraaswellasthosecollectedinprintedmatter,his current work is a continuing exploration of the transferprocess.Cameroninvitestheviewertoenjoythemysteryandfunofhiscreations. Chandra vanEijnsbergen, a Central Oregon resident forthe last ten years and the branch manager of the SunriverAreaPublicLibraryfrom2004-2010,hasbeencreatingjewelryforsixyears.Shefindsinspirationforherpiecesinthenaturalbeauty that can be found throughout Central Oregon. Shespendsherfreetimemountainbikingandhikingthroughoutthearea,soshecanseetheintricaciesandconnectednessofall things. She likes to take different types of materials andincorporatestonesfromallovertheworldtocreateapieceofjewelrythattypifiesthewhole.Shewillbeexhibitingavarietyofherjewelry--fromsimpletoflashy.
