Wishart State School Sport a Year in Review 2017

This year has been a very busy but successful year for Wishart State School in sport. Our school competed in an

extensive range of sporting activities at a number of local and state-wide events. Here is a look back on the year that

was.

January

First week back of 2017 saw the Wishart State School Swim Club restart after

the holiday hiatus. Many new and regular swimmers started the second half of

their season. We also welcomed our new student leadership team into their

positions.

February

Close to 20 Wishart students competed at the Mt Gravatt District Swimming

Championships. As usual we had a strong showing with many students beating

their personal best times and finishing in the top half of competitors. Brothers,

Lachlan and Connor were selected for the Mt Gravatt team and regional trials.

We had a number of students trial for Mt Gravatt District teams in other sports.

Hayley was successful in making the Mt Gravatt District Girls Basketball.

Semester 1 Interschool Sport kicked off with Soccer and Netball fixtures

starting on the last day of the month. This year we had close to 90 students

participating across 9 teams for Terms 1 and 2.

March

In March, Lachlan and Connor were selected in the Metropolitan East

Swimming team by finishing in the top three competitors for their selected

strokes. Hayley was selected in the Metropolitan East Girls Basketball team

with a string of strong performances for Mt Gravatt. The next step for those

three students was the State Championships.

April

The first week of April saw students selected in the Wishart State School Cross Country team compete at the Mt

Gravatt District Cross Country team. It was a great carnival as we had a young team and hopefully the experience will

improve them for next year. Summer was very successful at the carnival placing 8th in the 10yrs girls age group and

being picked to represent Mount Gravatt District at the Metropolitan East Cross Country Trials.

May

After competing at our local Cross Country competition Wishart State School’s next destination was Kedron State

High School to compete in 35th Annual All Schools Queensland Cross Country Championships. This year we finished

2nd out of 43 schools from across the state. This was our best ever result as a school at these championships. The

overall result was down to a team effort which included some notable results Jireh (2nd), Noah (3rd), Joseph (4th),

Joseph (5th), Xanthie (8th), Tara (13th) and Roman (12th). It also saw the following team’s podium –

Under 7’s Girls - Emily, Vallie and Zafirah 2nd Place Under 7’s Boys - Jireh, Noah and Joseph 1st Place

Under 8’s Girls - Grace, Grace and Michelle 3rd Place Under 8’s Boys - Roman, Lachlan and Harry 2nd Place

Towards the end of May the Wishart State School Netball squad made up of nearly 100 students from Year 1 to 6

took part at the Downey Park Netball Association Club Carnival. It was a great showing of the Wishart School spirit

with former students and current parents coaching, umpiring and mentoring

several teams across the day.

A successful Semester 1 Interschool Sport season came to a close in May. A special mention has to go to all these

students for having a go and representing our school at various venues around the district. We also had Wishart B

Soccer team and Wishart A Netball team win premierships.

To finish the month of May we had a number of students gain selection for Mt Gravatt teams, including Max for

Softball, Hayley for Netball, Riley for U11 Rugby League, Ruby for Tennis, Spencer and

Connor for Rugby Union. A tremendous effort. These students represented our district with

pride this year.

June

During the month of June, we had our annual Sports Days for 2017.

These days were contested well with many students endeavouring to

participate in 100m, 200m, 800m, Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put,

Discus, Tunnel Ball and Relays. Well done to all of the students who put

in so much effort during PE lessons to be ready for the event.

Overall – Mooloola

The month of June was another big month for Hayley who played superbly representing

Metropolitan East at the Under 12 Queensland Netball Championships. She played a

number of positions across the week long carnival and finished as top scorer in her team.

This effort puts her up there as one of the best shooters in the state.

The Cross Country season came to a close for Wishart State School at the 2017

Queensland Athletes All Schools Cross Country Relay Championships. Students had to

battle the hilly grounds of Rivermount College at Yatala. Teams of three students went up

against schools from across the state which included age groups from Prep to Year 6. The

Wishart team had some great results, building on only one podium finish in 2016.

July

The Wishart State School Netball squad of over 80 students from Years 1 to 6 competed at the Coorparoo and

Redlands Netball Carnivals and performed well considering they were up against club teams.

Mount Gravatt Girls Cricket Trials were also held during the month of July and Lily was selected for the district.

Hayley also competed at the State Championships for the Metropolitan East Girls Basketball team. She was then

picked for the Queensland team to travel to Adelaide for the Australian School Championships.

Over 50 students from Years 3 and 6

participated on stage in the annual Mt

Gravatt Show for a third year. Students

performed a number of Bush dances

including the Heel and Toe and the

Galopede. Our performances were also

interactive which saw many members

of the audience join in the dancing

festivities. I would like to thank all of

the students who took part and also

the number of Wishart families who

came along to support. Overall, the

students had an enjoyable day and

represented our school with pride. It

was a fun way to end the month of July.

August

Another big month for Wishart and Sport

was the month of August. The Mt Gravatt

District Track and Field Championship,

held at QSAC, included over 50 Wishart

students competing in numerous events

for our school; long jump, high jump, shot

put, discus, 100m, 200m and 800m were

contested by our team across two days.

Overall, as a school we contended strongly

out of 40 schools from across the district

which was a marvellous effort. Highlights

included –

Lachlan – 1st in High Jump (Champion)

and 3rd in the Multi Event (selected in the

district)

Zachary – 4th in High Jump (selected in the district team)

Kurt – 1st in Shot Put (Champion) and 1st in Discus (Champion) (selected in the district team)

Damon – 2nd in Discus (selected in the district team)

Connor – 3rd in the Multi Event and 4th in Shot Put (selected in the district team)

Hayley – 5th in Discus (selected in the district team)

Lily – 6th

in

Discus

(selected in the district team)

The Wishart State School Bush Dance was held in the second week of

August and it was a great night. The Rantan Bush Band again joined us

in a celebration of the strength of community we have here at Wishart.

Ruby, Camryn and Luke competed at

the 2017 Brisbane International Tennis

challenge at Griffith University. The

team played some of the biggest

schools from across Queensland and

only narrowly missed out on the finals.

Wishart State School competed in the

Brisbane Netball Association Junior Carnival. Wishart students from our Netball

Squad again participated in games across the day. All teams were successful and

students thoroughly enjoyed the competition. Most notably, the Under 12 team

finished 2nd in their division.

To round off the month over 50 students travelled to

Craigslea State High School to compete in the Volleyball

Queensland 2017 Primary Schools Cup. All teams

challenged well with the highlight being the Under 12 Boys

B team who finished 3rd and Under 12 Girls who placed 2nd

in A division. A big congratulations needs to go to the girls

who are the 2nd best Under 12 Girl’s team in the state.

September and October

A big year for Wishart State School in netball

culminated at this year’s Netball Queensland

Samsung Primary Schools Cup on the first Saturday and Sunday of the September school holidays. This year’s

tournament was held on the Sunshine Coast and consisted of 130 teams from all across the state. For the first time

we had 2 teams participate in the competition and both teams delivered some outstanding results. The Wishart Blue

team finished the first day in 3rd place in their pool out of seven teams. Due to the fantastic efforts of team Blue on

day one they competed in division 3 (6 divisions all up) on the second day. This was a huge achievement as many of

the team had only started playing netball this year.

The Wishart White team finished 1st in their pool on the first day winning all of their games placing them in Division 1

on the second day. They successfully finished top of their pool on the Sunday which then put them through to the

semi-finals. Unfortunately, the Wishart White team went down by 2 points in the semi-final meaning they finished in

4th place overall. This result puts Wishart in the top echelon of netballing schools

in the state.

The Metropolitan East Girl’s

Cricket Trials were a great

success with all students

perfor

ming

well. Lily was

selected in the

regional team to go the Qld Championships in Mackay. For the 3rd year in a row she competed at the State Titles

which has to be some sort of record.

Amy travelled to QSAC to compete for a place at the Queensland Track and Field Championships. She finished in the

top four participants for her sprints which meant she gained selection for the team. Another top effort for Wishart

students in representative sport.

November

November saw Wishart State School compete at two major state competitions,Touch Football and Swimming.

The Queensland Primary All Schools Touch Tournament was held at the Cleveland Showgrounds with over 70 schools

from all across Queensland participating in the competition. Wishart entered 4 teams with most students playing

touch for the first time. All of the teams performed well and everyone involved from parents to students enjoyed the

weekend carnival. We even had the Wishart Girl’s team finish 1st in their division on the second day. This is the first

time Wishart has won a division at the championships.

Wishart State School sent 28 athletes to the 2017 Queensland

Primary Schools Swimming Relay Championships at Chandler.

Students from Years 3 to 6 participated in a field of 40 other

schools from across Queensland. The Junior Mixed Medley

team came 3rd in their race which is an outstanding achievement. The team included Adalena, Ryan, Lachlan and

Fergus. All teams should be proud of their efforts as they went up against some of the strongest swimming schools

from across the state.

The end of the Interschool Sport

season saw the Girl’s A grade

Volleyball team come first in the

district as well as the Girl’s A grade

Basketball finish on top of their table.

November saw outstanding efforts

both in the water and on the land for

Wishart State School.

December

Following the Wishart tradition, our school Inter-house Swimming Carnivals were held in the first week of December.

The Junior Carnival saw students participate in a number of fun activities and celebrate a term of ‘learn to swim’. We

had a great day with students having heaps of fun as well as some individuals swimming 25 metres.

The Senior Carnival was hotly contested with many students having a go at swimming 50m to accumulate more

points for their house. Students gave of their best and parents and teachers should be very proud of that. The

champion house for 2017 was Mooloola.

The final area of sport Wishart State School will be represented in is Basketball. Hayley will train and play for over a

week at the Pan Pacific Games in Adelaide which will see her not only go against opposition states but also teams

from across Asia and Oceania like India. We wish her all the best not only at the event but into the future.

Summing up

Overall, it has been a great year for Wishart in various sporting

events. We have had so many highs which have included State

Championships top 5 finishes in Netball, Swimming, Volleyball

and Cross Country. There are so many people to thank along

with teachers, parents and former students. Hopefully, I will

catch up with you over the next couple of weeks. Finally, it is

goodbye to our Year 6 cohort of 2017. These students will

leave with our best wishes and congratulations on a wonderful

year. I am sure future students to come will only build on our

ever-growing sporting culture. It has been a privilege to be

involved in the Wishart State School community in 2017. I look

forward to next year and many more ahead.
