The festive period is upon us and the New Year fast approaching. This past year has been filled with many successes for calfordseaden.

Our continued investment in talent has been rewarded with the renewal of our ‘Investors in People’ Silver accreditation. We have also celebrated the success of Partner Chris Marien’s PhD from Cambridge, along with two fantastic award nominations. Partner Tim Jackson was shortlisted for the RICS Matrics ‘Mentor of the Year’ Award and Associate Anna Keys was shortlisted for ‘Consultant of the Year’ at the Women In Housing Awards.

An ongoing commitment to a positive health and safety culture throughout our offices has been recognised by the successful migration from OHSAS 18001 to the new ISO 45001 standard. Our hard work and effort has resulted in this being awarded significantly ahead of the compulsory deadline of March 2021.

We have had the opportunity to be involved in a variety of award-winning developments. I am personally proud of the lead role calfordseaden played in the Packington Estate project. We were first approached to work on this scheme in 2003, when the concept was in its infancy. From the outset it had the potential to be an outstanding example of successful regeneration and a model for new homes. This complex multiphase project is now fully complete after a 16 year journey and has gone on to win the Best Regeneration Award from the National Housing Awards 2019.

During 2020 we will continue to build on our range of multidisciplinary services across a diverse portfolio of projects. A focus on delivering quality should enable us to celebrate many more achievements.

On behalf of everyone at calfordseaden, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous New Year.

This year we have had the opportunity to both develop and showcase our range of skills. Our teams have hosted a number of seminars and have been invited to present at several industry events. We have also strengthened our teams with the appointment of four new senior members.

This year we have had the pleasure of hosting a number of breakfast seminars. Our range of presentations have included the following topics: Rights of Light and Party Walls, SAP10 Regulations and Passivhaus standards.

Our seminars offer an opportunity for industry professionals to network, share ideas, and receive valuable insight on the latest industry updates.

We have achieved the ‘Investors in People’ Silver accreditation for the second year running. This award highlights our dedicated passion to the ongoing development of our staff.

We strongly believe that there are so many different routes into construction, one of which is the hands-on experience gained from apprenticeships. This year we have had the opportunity to support the following apprentices:

Elizabeth Williams Level 6 Chartered Surveyor Degree ApprenticeshipDylan Simmons Level 6 Chartered Surveyor Degree ApprenticeshipLucie Dos Santos Level 6 Chartered Surveyor Degree ApprenticeshipZak Conquest Level 3 Surveying Technician Apprenticeship

The hard work and dedication of our surveyors has resulted in calfordseaden achieving a 100% pass rate for the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence examinations.

Giving back to the communities that we operate across is a huge part of our company ethos. This year, we have made valuable donations of both time and money to support a number of important causes.

From our calfordseaden Bake Off to rival Paul and Pru to dressing up for Halloween, we are proud to have raised a combined total of £7000 throughout the year which has gone towards supporting charities such as Children in Need, Comic Relief, Land Aid and more.

Volunteers from our Essex office spent two days lending a helping hand to Trust Links, a local mental health and well-being charity. The team donned their work boots and grabbed a paintbrush to spruce up the site facilities in preparation for the charity’s open day.

Twelve calfordseaden volunteers tackled Trailwalker UK, one of the country’s toughest team endurance challenges. The combined fundraising drive of the three teams saw us raise £5,548 for Oxfam and the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

calfordseaden took part in Downwell’s annual Surveyors Cup, narrowly missing out on the semi-finals following a tight penalty shoot-out. But ultimately, all 40 teams were winners, raising nearly £4,000 for the Jermain Defoe Foundation.

The Dragon Boat Challenge saw us paddle our way towards an impressive combined total of £50,000, raised for the charity Home Start UK.

Our strength was truly tested in the JLL Triathlon, consisting of Running, Cycling and Swimming in support of homelessness charity Crisis.

This year we have had the opportunity to work on some fantastic projects across multiple sectors, showcasing our range of multi-disciplinary services.

calfordseaden was appointed to provide Project Management, Employer’s Agent, Quantity Surveying and Clerk of Works Services to this collaborative work space. The client initially had an existing office and warehouse space which, through the refurbishment, was transformed into a Smarter Workspace for all of the office teams.

The central atrium, with tiered seating and inviting natural lighting, promotes a community atmosphere for all staff to come together and enjoy. Surrounding the atrium is a host of meeting rooms, open-plan desking, designated hot desking areas, quiet rooms and breakout areas, supporting both connectivity and flexible ways of working.

calfordseaden provided multi-disciplinary services to this award winning inner city 12-year and six-phase regeneration scheme.

Commended for delivering exemplary affordable housing, the scheme replaces 540 existing affordable homes and provides an additional 300 apartments for private sale. The community atmosphere for this development is brought together with the landscaped squares, canal side park, workshops, commercial units, an energy centre run by ESCO and community facilities.

We ensured to obtain best value for the client by successfully managing complex cost negotiations through targeted investigations.

calfordseaden’s engagement at Wickford Community Centre was in our combined capacity as Design Architect, Principal Designer, M&E Consultant and Employer’s Agent.

We were appointed by Basildon Borough Council to provide a detailed planning submission. The submission was to introduce a community centre and pre-school building along with increased parking provision on part of the existing recreation ground.

Our design team were engaged in pre-application advice from the planning department during the course of developing proposals. The final scheme combines a contemporary design situated on a well-considered landscape, promoting a sense of place and creating a development that complements its surroundings.

calfordseaden was appointed as Architects and Principal Designers on this £3.5m innovative project.

Led by Poplar HARCA and in partnership with the Greater London Authority and the London College of Fashion, this initiative aimed to reinvigorate the area’s rich historic relationship with the arts.

To achieve this, the scheme set out to redevelop single storey garage blocks into individual workspaces and communal facilities with the aim to encourage and support a strong collaborative community atmosphere.
