2004 TRIVIA POKER RALLY

By popular demand (well at least one person asked for it) the Trivia Poker Rally is back. In conjunction with our September meeting which is being held in Sedgwick County Park we are once again putting on a poker rally. Meet us at the southeast parking lot (enter the park from 13th and turn right). We use this starting location for those of you who want to team up but don’t want to leave your car across town. Reg-istration will be open by 6:00 with the rally starting at 6:30. We plan to be on the road for about an hour so we can all be back by 7:30 in time for the food to be served. For those who have never been on this event, it is a simple road rally with no timing. You will be expected to follow the course drawing a card at each check point you find. Put together a good poker hand and try to beat the other teams. We will also ask some simple trivia questions. For each correct answer you will be able to draw a card to replace those you have drawn and don’t like. Remember….

Club Meeting in Sedgwick County Park at 7:30

YOKOHAMA TO SPONSOR SCCA CLUB RACING WORKER OF THE YEAR PROGRAM; OFFERS GRAND PRIZE TRIP TO LE MANS

TOPEKA, Kan. (July 29, 2004) – Sports Car Club of America, Inc. announced today a new partnership between its Club Racing Worker of the Year program and Yokohama Tire Corporation. In addition to awarding all 13 Workers of the Year a set of Yokohama tires, one lucky winner (along with a guest) will travel to the 2005 24 Hours of Le Mans to be Yokohama’s guest for the event.

The SCCA Club Racing Worker of the Year program annually recognizes the outstanding efforts of individuals in 13 separate race worker specialties, including: Course Marshall, Emergency Services, Flagging & Communications, Grid, Paddock, Pit, Race Chair, Radio Tech, Registration, Scrutineer, Sound, Starter and Timing & Scoring.

“We’re pleased to have Yokohama Tires step in to sponsor the Yokohama Tire Worker of the Year program,” SCCA Vice President of Marketing Garret Mudd said. “Yokohama’s involvement has boosted the program. What better way to reward an outstanding road racing worker than to send them with a guest to the biggest sports car race in the world?”

“We’re proud to support the people who support our racers,” Yokohama Director of Marketing Communications Art Michalik said. “Without the dedication of SCCA workers, there wouldn’t be road racing in the United States. We’re proud to associate our name and products with the dedication and professionalism demonstrated by the SCCA Club Racing Workers of the Year.”

Yokohama Tire Workers of the Year candidates are nominated throughout the year by their peers, with the winners announced at the SCCA Club Racing Runoffs National Championships presented by Kohler, September 23 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. To nominate a candidate, either download the hard copy form or submit the online form at http://www.scca.com/Club/index.asp?reference=woy.

Winners of the 2004 Yokohama Tire Worker of the Year will each receive a set of Yokohama passenger, high performance or light truck tires. Of those winners, one will be selected for the grand prize, a trip to the 2005 24 Hours of Le Mans as a guest of Yokohama Tire with all travel expenses paid.

Dave Gird was a lot quicker on his new Hoosiers running a 37.042 in taking A-Stock. Jeff Scher-muly won a large, yet Honda-free B-Stock class in his Yellow 911. Jim Pernice enjoyed the open course in his F-Stock Camaro by taking the class. Gary Bryant took H-Stock in his Prelude, just beating Lawrence Duty by 3 tenths. New driver Kelly Duty took the ladies class. George Pantchev won DSP in his newly painted Initial-D Corolla. FSP was the Renault GTA challenge with Bill Preheim throwing his Sprite

into the mix. Greg Laws finished first in the class, about a second and a half ahead of Bill who just beat out Jason Reyes and Ryan Kilby, both driving the Phrog. Mike Herrick won E Prepared in his recently completed '86 CRX. Chris Lawrie extended his lead in the hotly-contested Street Touring S class, fin-ishing just ahead of Tom Urbanek and Tim Harmon. No surprise that a WRX

won STX, driven by Andrew Auerbach. Kevin Anderson comes back to defeat Jared this time in the Silver Miata in STS2. I may have won Street Open in my Miata, but I discovered that having intimate knowledge of the course doesn't neces-sarily help as much as you'd think. I finsihed in about the same position overall as I normally do at 11th. Thanks again to everyone who made this a fun and safe event!

It's been over a month since we ran our July Solo, so I hope those of you who were there remember how much fun we had at one of the fastest courses of the year on the tight Boeing lot. Although I was the main course designer I certainly can only take about half the credit for the final design. As many course designers/event chairs have discovered, what you have on paper is often very different from how things end up. We started course setup around 6:30am and I apologize to everyone that it wasn't chalked by the time most people tried to start walking. Of course “I” knew how the course was supposed to go! Next time I do this I will wear a watch, because Paul Sherman kindly informed me that “you know it's 10a.m.” right around the time I noticed how many confused people were trying to figure out how to get out of the starting gate! Time really flies when you're having fun. Thanks so much to everyone who pitched in to make what I thought was a really fun course. Especially Ken Neely and Paul Sherman who weren't able to drive but helped out anyway. I also have to give credit to the event co-chair Hal Larcher who is always the first one there in the morning and takes the trailer back at the end of the day. The course proved to be in the 37 second range for the fastest fendered cars, enabling us to give everyone 5 runs. It featured 2 crossovers and an optional slalom and optional turnaround. Tom Zickuhr managed to beat everyone else with fend-ers with a 36.367. As for the speedy Formula cars--the Geis' were not alone this time. Robert Moore visited with his yellow Formula V to take F-Mod and FTD with a 34.867, beating Dave Geis by just 14 one-thousandths.

I have often been accused of having tunnel vision when I’m driving around town and I have heard other women say the same thing. I got to thinking about this on the way home the other day and paid attention to the other drivers around me. The women were very focused, eyes straight ahead, the men were rubber necking in some cases ac-tually turning around and looking behind them as they drove down the street. I got to wondering if we could blame this behavior on our cavemen ancestors. Men were the hunters while were women the gatherers. I imagine it went

something like this.

Grog and friends head out to hunt one fine morning. They had had a hard night the night before drinking Rockmeister and working on Grogs new wheel. He had bought it from a guy for two pelts and a spearhead. It was as used Chevy Stonearado. Built like a rock. The guy said it was in good shape but a little rough around the edges, so

Grog and the boys had spent the night before discussing the best way to go about smoothing things out. After such an exhausting evening they decided to go after easier game such as saber-toothed jackrabbit. They set out with no particu-lar destination in mind just out looking to see what might come their way. They weren’t worried about finding their way since they were just going to the valley. Knowing the valley they were headed to was to the south they could just

head in northerly direction to get back to the cave. They wouldn’t really take note of what the trees or rocks looked like but were going to be looking in all directions for game.

Grog’s wife Merg knew she need to gather berries that morning so after cleaning up after the “work party” from the night before, repairing Grog’s spare loincloth and getting the kids off to Cro-Magnon Jr. High she was off on excit-

ing adventure to a new gathering spot. A friend had told her about a place to find berries and given her instructions on how to get there. If she remembered the directions all she had to do was head straight for the three sided rock with the

mammoth drawn on it, turn left till she came to tree that looked like a raptors head and make a sharp right till she came to the stream. She would have to concentrate hard on the trip since she hadn’t ever been there before. But with these landmarks in mind she thought she would be able to get there and back in time to fix supper for Grog and the kids. She kept her eyes straight ahead and paid now attention to things

that might distract her and make her lose her way.

That night over supper Merg told Grog about her great adventure to the new gathering spot how exciting it was and bout all the great berries

she found. Grog responded with the occasional grunt to make her think he was listening all the while thinking about his new wheel.

Of course this is just one theory. Does anyone have a better idea they would like to share? Here’s to differences.

Remember that all of my RE Reports ended with, “Are we havin’ fun yet?” Since it’s been one of “those years,” I de-cided do a little addition to see just how much fun this year has been.

We’ll start out with the Rally experiences to get the ball rolling. The first Rally of the year promised to be a great time until we made exactly no (zero, zilch, nada, not even one) checkpoints. Hmmm, not much fun there. For the second

Rally of the year, I was going to just work since my navigator was at her job. Guess what? They were all self-controls, so I just headed for home grumbling to myself. Add another zero fun point for Rally.

The third Rally! Woohoo! With Bobert Foster as navigator, we finished in a four-way tie for 6th place! Add ‘em up for

a ***Rally fun factor of 1 out of 3***.

Things weren’t working out too well on the Race side either. The first race was great. We decided to work corners in-stead of the usual tech/impound and had a blast. Then a few days before the second race of the year, I came down with pneumonia. Nope, no fun point there. On the day before the third and last race at Hallett, I was in the Wesley ER with

a broken bone in my foot and one in my ankle. Maybe that should count as a negative fun factor point? But the first race fun still made it a ***Race fun factor of 1 out of 3***.

I started out with very high hopes for the Solo season. Rick Knapp had made us a new exhaust system and fabricated a rear anti-roll bar over the winter - more power and no more understeer! Of course, more air out of the exhaust means

more air into the carb, right? So in go bigger custom-made venturis. But. . . .

The bad thing about having a dedicated race car is that the only way to tune it under load is at the “track.” After 5 events of trying to get the carb re-jetted for the bigger venturis with no luck, I finally gave up and put the old venturis

and jets back in. 0 for 5 so far for Solo.

We got to Boeing at our usual oh-dark-thirty for the 6th event and got permission to do some skidpad runs to help scrub in the first ever set of sticker tires. The first timed run was good (except for sliding on the new tires), but then

the usual luck held out. Note to self - make sure the air cleaner is fully seated on the top of the carburetor. The car was only running on 2 cylinders for the rest of my runs because the idle circuit had gotten some dirt sucked into it L. (On the good side of running on only two cylinders, I still managed to set the Fastest Time of Day for the event. Then I got

accused of disabling a couple of cylinders for “traction control” on the sandy surface J.) Although it started out as a good day, the stress and exasperation involved made it a 0 for 6 for Solo.

The 7th Solo of the year finally had everything in place. The car ran great and the left foot/ankle was healed enough to

take off the walking cast to be able to push in the clutch (ouch). Yep, we’re havin’ fun now. One out of seven!!!

But wait; there’s more. Off we go to Salina the next week for the 8th Solo of our year. 300’ into the first run I found out that I couldn’t get the car into third gear!!!! I knew exactly what was wrong, but it usually takes two people an hour

or more to get everything set just right on the weird Jamar shifter mechanism (see photo) so we loaded up and came home. That brought the total ***Solo fun factor to 1 out of 8*** for the year as of mid-August.

After taking the rear of the car apart again, putting dimples in the shifter hockey stick to keep the set screws in place,

fixing the massive tranny fluid leak after I got the gasket in crooked, adjusting the shifter, and making sure the air cleaner is on it’s base, I think it may be ready to try again. Maybe. I hope. We’ll see.

With the final count of 3 “good” events out of 14, you’d think that we would be ready to toss in the towel. Nope,

there’s still a slim chance that the year can be salvaged <g>. Maybe. I hope. We’ll see.

Are We Havin’ Fun Yet? - Dave Geis

Wichita Region of the Sports Car Club of America

PRESENTS

WITCH’S RYDE’ Road Rally

This T.S.D. rally, traditionally held in October, has been a Regional, Divisional, as well as a National Rally. This year's regional club event will start in the north-east of Wichita (details are not determined as of this writing, but will be included in next month's Wail, also posted on the web). The rally route will end at a Picnic/Barbeque/Halloween Party. Anticipate bur-gers, brats, and beer festivities. Halloween costumes are optional, but will be rewarded. This will be a T.S.D. (Time-Speed-Distance) Rally geared for the novice participant. I hope to make it interesting for the expert as well. Look for a Rally Participant Instructional School announcement on the web at www.wichitascca.org. Registration should start at 8:30 am, with the first car off at 9:30. There will be a short lunch break with food options available. The Rally will be on paved roads only, travel about 250 miles, and take approxi-mately six hours. Hope to see you there! Bill Preheim

They thought they had a strangle hold on 29th! There were 31 entries in spite of lousy weather!! The Wichita Eagles Rader and Berry were second in the Media Challenge category of that same Road Rally. They stated they want to win it next year!! Thus, they want to learn all there is to know about Road Rallying! Let's all help them learn so they can fulfill that dream!!!! Wichita Region has the challenge to make a comeback in Road Rallying. After all, you don't want any other SCCA Region to have better events and entry list's {consistently} in any category then our own Wichita Region, do you??? Work to make ALL our events entry friendly. Registration time's such that everyone can be included, not excluded by early closure times. None entrants running registration might help entry level along with less ME and a lot more US in our attitude's. SMILE more and show that YOU enjoy their presence! There are SmileS a mile wide between the ESSE's, remember? Road Rally... Auto Cross... Road Race... Socials... Meetings..., it's all the same when people care about each other and enjoy just being there!!! Bruce T Sargent

FYI Since there is some required lead time to get a Novice Permit, car, suit, etc., we need to get the word out re our 10/16 Drivers' School. Please pass the word and put something in The Wail if possible. Thank you.

For anyone interested in getting into road racing, our 10/16-17 event includes an SCCA Driv-ers' School in addition to a High Performance Car Control Clinic and the Mid-Am Bonus Races. Also Memphis BBQ. Let me know if you need an Entry Form

It has been quite busy around our household over the last month. Our oldest daughter is off to KU, and we attended a lot of car events. First was the Mid-Div Solo in Topeka, that was a lot of fun although I did not do very well there. The weather was not too bad but it did rain on us and made the early heats ex-citing. But did end up with enough points to be second in the Division I think, they have not officially posted that anywhere I can find. Went to two cars shows and we have been working hard to have my youngest daughters car ready so she could drive to school all by herself this year. What a scary thought, thank good-ness we have been through that once now and maybe have some inkling of what to look out for. We also went to the SOLO at WGP, wow there were a lot of cars and people there. I was excited to be there that day because Greg Laws has asked me to co-drive the Phrog at the Nationals and this was my first oppor-tunity to try it out. It was much faster than I anticipated and have to learn way more about how it handles I think to really make it go. And Greg did not even look all that worried when he handed over the keys! Once again want to thank all the people that put in a lot of hours to make our Solo program work, but would expecially like to thank Hal and Kim! We missed the Lake Rally and pic-nic and felt bad about because we had looked forward to that one. But are get-ting ready for the upcoming rallies that are scheduled. I would like to encourage everyone in Solo and Racing to come out and have some fun. If you are like me you may not be competitive, but we have a good time in spite of our lack of skill. I am trying to round out my participation in all the areas of our club. I have yet to get to do much with racing but hope to yet this year. I found pic-tures of people racing, sorry the only car I knew for sure was Paul’s, please let me know about yours if you have any and would be glad to show them. Now I am getting ready for the Nationals, and I know I will see a bunch of you there, good luck and be safe!
