Description:
Wi-Fi is rapidly becoming the mainstream method of connection to the Internet also for tablets and smartphones. The main reason for this being that 4G networks and their promised cheap and powerful data connectivity services are not here yet, whilst the existing and expensive 3G networks are increasingly unable to cope with a pent-up demand. For operators and enterprises, rapidly deploying new Wi-Fi public hot spots and access points, as well efficiently managing them with the lowest possible TCO, is thus getting high in their priority list. In this presentation we will introduce Wi-Fi Cloud, a turnkey, end-to-end cloud solution, specifically tailored for Wi-Fi projects and capable of addressing various application/usage scenarios and market segments leveraging next-generation wireless technologies and products. The solution has been already adopted by a major Italian ISP and the presentation will provide an overview on the architecture, business model and processes as well as share some the lessons learned.

Wi‐Fi increasingly becoming a viableand effective broadband access solution 1/2

The IEEE 802.11n provides for extremely high throughputs,

high spectral efficiency, extended range, multi‐band support,

and operating flexibility in trading off between distance and

throughput

Wi‐Fi can be deployed at lower cost than most alternative

technologies, especially in environments where little wireline

infrastructure exists. Time to market is also much faster

Maturing operator‐class Wi‐Fi equipment has the

sophisticated functionality needed to work in these challenging

RF environments

New equipment enables flexible deployment. Example

include mesh operation and Wi‐Fi based point‐to‐point

communication for backhaul

Wi‐Fi increasingly becoming a viableand effective broadband access solution 2/2

The ongoing popularity of Wi-Fi is reflected in the fact

that worldwide WLAN (wireless LAN) equipment

revenue in 2010 jumped 25 percent to surpass $5

billion and chipset shipments is expected to hit more

than one billion units per year by 2012

The cellular handsets segment is seen to be

maintaining the highest unit shipment of

Wi-Fi-enabled products in next five years,

achieving an estimated CAGR of 25 percent

between 2009 and 2015; the penetration

rate will reach approximately 40 percent of

the total handsets shipped in 2015
