Wi‐Fi increasingly becoming a viableand effective broadband access solution 1/2
The IEEE 802.11n provides for extremely high throughputs,
high spectral efficiency, extended range, multi‐band support,
and operating flexibility in trading off between distance and
throughput
Wi‐Fi can be deployed at lower cost than most alternative
technologies, especially in environments where little wireline
infrastructure exists. Time to market is also much faster
Maturing operator‐class Wi‐Fi equipment has the
sophisticated functionality needed to work in these challenging
RF environments
New equipment enables flexible deployment. Example
include mesh operation and Wi‐Fi based point‐to‐point
communication for backhaul

Wi‐Fi increasingly becoming a viableand effective broadband access solution 2/2
The ongoing popularity of Wi-Fi is reflected in the fact
that worldwide WLAN (wireless LAN) equipment
revenue in 2010 jumped 25 percent to surpass $5
billion and chipset shipments is expected to hit more
than one billion units per year by 2012
The cellular handsets segment is seen to be
maintaining the highest unit shipment of
Wi-Fi-enabled products in next five years,
achieving an estimated CAGR of 25 percent
between 2009 and 2015; the penetration
rate will reach approximately 40 percent of
the total handsets shipped in 2015
