A Resilient Life: Healthy Relationships

One of the factors in a Resilient Life highlighted by Sheridan Voysey is De-veloping Healthy Relationships. He identifies four factors that undermine and destroy relationships:

Anger Unfaithfulness False promises Retaliation.

Jesus challenges us to love our enemies and to be peace makers. One place we might start is with our relationships and friendships. What one thing might you do this month to strengthen an existing friendship

or to start to turn an acquaintance into a friend?

Dear Friends Easter is late this year, the school holidays will have happened before we even get to Holy Week, the week in which we remember the events leading up to Jesus’ death and resurrection. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday 14th April. As well as our regular morning service (10.15 at St Mary’s, Thornthwaite), in the afternoon at 4pm it will be Messy Church. Everyone is welcome, there will be activities to help us think about Easter, some time to celebrate before we sit down for a meal to-gether. Then on the Monday Tuesday and Wednesday evenings (15th, 16th and 17th April) from 7-8pm everyone is invited to join Bishop James, the bishop of Car-lisle, in Booths Café! He will be leading some reflections and discussion and there will be refreshments too. These are open to everyone, not just church members. On Thursday 18th, known as Maundy Thursday, we remember especially the last supper Jesus had with his disciples before he died. This year we are hold-ing a service of Holy Communion at St Mary’s, Thornthwaite. It will be quiet and reflective and at the end we will leave silently going out into the dark, as Jesus went from that meal to pray on the Mount of Olives. On Good Friday, 19th April, there will be a walk of witness in Keswick starting at 11am by the wishing well in the Theatre car park (near Hope Park). A large cross will be carried and at various points along the way there will be pauses to reflect and hear the story of the events of Good Friday when Jesus died for love of the world. In the afternoon at St Herbert’s, Braithwaite there will be an hour of reflections from 2-3pm. Easter Day itself, 21st April, will be celebrated at St Herbert’s, Braithwaite at 10.15am. In an uncertain world, where so much is fragile and many things are changing, faith in God who raised Jesus from the dead offers us strength and hope. I do hope and pray you will experience God’s blessing this Easter.

With very best wishes,

Judith

Exploring the Future for New-lands Church

A working group of the PCC has been ex-ploring the future for Newlands Church. Thankyou for the 14 responses to the questionnaire distributed to those who live in the valley, which suggest there is a lot of support to help with the maintenance of the building. What we need to do now is to see if we can turn that into practical day to day and week by week arrangements for continued care of the church. This is vital to creating a sustainable future for the building. An Open Meeting (see below) is the next step. If we can get practical arrangements in place, the ideas for using the building and for making visitors welcome become possible. The PCC has agreed that the current pattern of monthly Morning Services at 10.15 eve-ry 4th Sunday should continue until the Harvest Festival service on 22nd September 2019. After that there will be a minimum of four services during the summer months, for 2020 these are suggested as:

Easter Day Sunrise service followed by breakfast buns etc.

A Friends of Newlands Church service

A Mission Community service with a barbeque

A Songs of Praise type service on the final Sunday of the afternoon tea season. The church would remain open as it is now, and would continue to be available for Weddings, Funerals and Christenings.

*** This year the Friends of Newlands Church service is on 26th May, and will be incorpo-rated in our Parish Communion service, at the slightly later time of 11.00am. All are invited to come along, you don't have to be a member of FONC to attend. There will be tea/coffee afterwards and an opportunity to chat with friends, visitors and locals

Over the past year the children at Braithwaite School have had the op-portunity to work with Active Art on a regular basis, enjoying many out-door Art Sessions. Together, they are transforming the look of their school and its grounds with many interesting and striking pieces of art. These include a huge wooden tree installation standing tall in the school entrance hall based on the school motto, ‘Learning together, growing together’. Other work include the vibrant ‘School of Fish’ fence in the Early Years playground, the ‘Wall of Wise Owls’ welcoming you into the school and the brightly coloured ‘Friendship Bench’ focusing on unity, love and compassion.

Active Art

Active Art is a new business venture, recently set up by a sister and brother team who were brought up on a working farm in Eskdale in the Lake District. Now based in Braithwaite and Lorton, Claire Grant & Philip Wake have the aim of inspiring Nursery and Primary School aged chil-dren to explore the huge variety of techniques and materials that art offers, giving children a broad experience of art in many different forms.

Active Art places great importance to encouraging children to get crea-tive in the outdoors, learning about artists, techniques and media before putting these new skills into practice. The workshops introduce a broad range of interesting and fun techniques, allowing children to explore art media in unique ways. The sessions are full of movement and energy, often big and adventurous and allow the children to dive into and ex-plore art in a way they will remember with enthusiasm and pride.

‘Art has so many avenues, so much to offer and no boundaries; it can be enormous and bold or delicate and small. Getting children outdoors, cre-ating, working individually or as a team, getting involved, getting messy, expressing themselves and being different is vital as well as a fun and lively way to learn’ said Claire.

Active Art also offers schools and organizations the opportunity to make permanent artwork, producing large wooden installation pieces. These are tailor made for each school, with designs initially sketched out by Active Art, based around a topic or theme chosen by the school, these are then cut from hard wood and treated to make them hardwearing and long-lasting. A special workshop is subsequently organized involving the whole school with each child painting an individual part of the instal-lation. These wooden installations are a great way to bring colour, ener-gy and inspiration to a school and can be displayed either inside or out-side in the school grounds. ‘Children gain a real sense of pride in having been part of a team, creating something long lasting and eye-catching for their school. They are always delighted to point out their individual piece on the installation to their friends and family’ Philip added.

NoGoGondola.......Update Thank you to everyone who has been supporting our campaign to influence the LDNPA’s recent plans. Over 150 have attended our meetings in St. Herbert’s church hall. On 1st March the Lake District National Park Authority published the revised Local Plan which included developments concerning the concept of a Gondola (cable car) ride from Thornthwaite to the Whinlatter Centre, as well as plans to extend the leisure area up there. In March the NoGoGondola Group had an opportunity to meet with the NPA’s Chair-man Mike McKinley, Steve Ratcliffe (Director, Park’s Strategy and Vision Director), Han-nah Latte (planner) and our Local NPA Member Geoff Davies to discuss it. In a nutshell, there have been some significant and positive changes:

The word Gondola has been removed from the Plan, so a planning application would not be supported by any overt policy within the Park’s official rule book (obviously good news)

There is now a requirement for a Master Plan to be worked out and approved by anyone wishing to develop anything at Whinlatter (as opposed to a single development idea such as a Gondola)

Developments that ‘adversely impact surrounding settlements’ are likely to be refused

There will be community involvement in the Master planning process

The requirement for Developers to make contributions to transport infrastruc-ture improvement

There remain issues however,

The LDNPA’s continued role as a stakeholder in the Whinlatter Development Company. While not a Local Plan issue directly, this suggests that key figures in the NPA remain privately committed to a Gondola at Whinlatter

The Plan still indicates that ‘Leisure Accommodation’ would be viewed favoura-bly at Whinlatter as part of a Masterplan (which some of us may oppose)

Development controls in our ‘North Distinctive Area’ are now too relaxed in our view due to a change in wording

There should be a clear obligation on any developer to evaluate and wherever possible use existing (transport) infrastructure before any new forms are consid-ered

Page 10: with Newlands.Apr 03, 2019  · Funeral Directors Ltd Exploring the Future for New-T: 017687 72246 M: 077305 20663 Email: info@greensfuneralskeswick.co.uk Long established Independent

10

Most fundamentally, the Local Plan does not (and realistically probably never can) go so far as to say ‘there will never be a Gondola’, so the possibility of a planning applica-tion being brought forward at some point remains. What we can say though is that, assuming the Revised Plan is adopted, it should be significantly more difficult for a Gondola proposal to be approved. Later in March the Board of Governors for the LDNPA were meeting, to adopt the final policy document to be sent to Westminster. In April, when the Revised local Plan is published, there will be a “Consultation” peri-od of 8 weeks for further comments. PLEASE LOOK OUT IN THE PRESS AND OUR WEB-SITE for your last chance to influence events.

New International Charity Launches from Braithwaite

The Starfish Story Early one morning, an old man was walking along the sea-shore and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see. Off in the distance, he noticed a small boy approaching. As the boy walked, he paused every so often and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occa-sionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea. The boy came closer still and the man called out, “Good morning! What are you doing?” The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The storm tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves. When the sun gets up, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.” The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. What difference can you possibly make?” The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

Vision This story is the inspiration for the charity – the vision is to inspire and enable a wave of starfish throwers, to make an impact on physical and spiritual poverty - one person at a time. In the words of Rev George Hoffman, founder of TEARFund “One person cannot change the world, but they can change the world for one person”. Laurence and Alison Biggs who live in Braithwaite are two of the 4 trustees of the charity. Laurence has recently returned from a two week trip to Kenya to build partnerships as the charity builds momentum. Financial support is very welcome via the stewardship network at www.give.net/20262923 or through Charities aid Foundation at www.cafonline.org.
