President’s MessageEditorial

Firstly, I must thank District Governor, PP Leslie Salehuddin for taking time off from his busy schedule to come forth on a Monday afternoon to officiate our 1st Pudu Rotary Club’s project for RY2009/2010. That is, “JOIN HAND WITH ROTARY, ACTION IS IN YOUR HANDS.”

Obviously, every successful story; behind the scene you have a team of dedicated, committed and responsible people. Organizing Chairman, PP Chow Tain (who has been hibernating for years) makes a thunderous comeback to serve one again. This time, he and his team have worked profusely around the clock, while the Club Service Director, Rtn Asok Kumar and yours truly, have to travel aboard to epresent Pudu in our Sister’s Club’s Induction Night at RC Mandaluyong.

The objectives of this project are:

1. To allow the NGOs and the public at large to understand better about what is Rotary and its movements.

2. The “DOs” and “DON’Ts” and how to synergize with Rotary in community service projects.

3. To inculcate better understanding and knowledge of Rotary’s values and its principles when carrying out projects together.

4. To welcome, FAQs, feedbacks, suggestions and ideas from NGOs and join hands to serve the communities better.

Li Ka Shing, Chairman of Cheung Kong Holdings one quoted.

“The future may be made up of many factors but where it truly lies is in the hearts and minds of men. Your dedication should not be confi ned for your own gain, but unleashes your passion for our beloved country as well as for the integrity and humanity of mankind.”

Pudu, is blessed with the richness and indwelling wisdoms of all the 42 Past Presidents who served before me. In my message last week. I quote them as great teachers. Well, after working closely with them, since December 2008, may I say this, “They are perpetually living in Rotary. Sleeping and dreaming about Rotary. They think, say and do Rotary.” They are true Rotarians with pride and integrity.

Significantly, This has again been illustrated at the organizing of our yearly fellowship night (before the Installation Night), and the forth coming, “43rd PRC Installation Night Dinner”, at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, Lagoon 3, Sunway.

....continues on page 5

GET READY FOR THE INSTALLATION!!!

This Sat 25th July 2009 the Club will be having its 43rd Installation of the 43rd President. IPP Michael Yeow will be handing over the jewels of office to President Robin in a grand ceremony witnessed by members, guests, sister clubs and many other VIPs. It will be carried out in a grand venue viz. The Ballroom of the Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa.

Similarly for other Rotary clubs all over the world the handing over of running the club will be carried out. Some in a grand ceremony just like ours, some even grander in a bigger venue, and some in a simple ceremony like even during the regular weekly meeting. Wherever and however it is done, the actual handing over of power of running the club’s affair is real and a new board of directors takes over.

The constitution of all Rotary clubs says that all offi cers of the club take offi ce for one year and in the new year, a new set of officers takes over.

In large and medium size clubs eg. between 30 to 100 members it is not a major problem to rotate responsibilities amongst the members. However in our district 3300 there are many small clubs some with only about 10 members!. The full board consists of 11 office bearers and that means some will have to undertake dual positions. And then what about board appointees and chairmanship? In respect of this the undersized club will have difficulty functioning. The district has in the past closed down clubs like this and arranged its members to join other Rotary clubs.

Just like Rotary clubs, the Rotaract and Interact clubs too have their own installation ceremony to mark the change over. Like Rotary clubs too sometimes they have elaborate or simple ceremonies.

Most installation ceremonies occur in the months of June or July. However some have it earlier in May or as late as in August. Nevertheless whenever it is held, the change over is complete on 1st July. On that date all Rotary, Rotaract and Interact clubs all over the world have new office bearers. It is the same with Rotary International which will have a new President on that date.

And can you believe it? This process has gone on for more than a century and still being practiced!

With Best Compliments from

Pudu News“INVOLVED WE ARE, COMMITTED WE MUST BE”

PROCEEDINGS ON MONDAY, 13th July 2009

Guest Speaker : DG PP Leslie Salehuddin

Subject : Join Hands With Rotary, Actions Are In Your Hands

CLUB PROCEEDINGS

Acting SAA Rtn Lawrence Khoo called the meeting to order at 1.10 pm on behalf of President Robin Tay. He introduced all the visiting Rotarians and guests and later led in the singing of the National Anthem and later proposed the loyal toast.

There was no fine session being conducted for this weekly meeting.

INTRODUCTION OF GUEST SPEAKER

PP Chow Tain introduced the guest speaker for the day who was none other than our very own District Governor D3300 DG PP Leslie Salehuddin who gave his address and launching the program Join Hands With Rotary – Actions Are In Your Hands.

SPEAKER’S CV

DG PP LESLIE SALEHUDDIN

District Governor Leslie Salehuddin or DG Leslie as we normally address him ,is a very well-known man in our local Rotary world. Many of our guests may ask, “Who, What, Where is your local Rotary World?” It means simply, my friends, that DG Leslie as the First Officer of Rotary, he presides over the activities of over 1,800 Rotarian members in over 70 clubs from Alor Setar, Kedah in the north to Bahau, Negri Sembilan in the south and to Kota Bharu

and Kuantan in the east. Under DG Leslie’s governance, the Rotary activities and the Rotarians managing these activities are so many that the Rotary District Handbook detailing with all these activities and on these Rotarians managing them is so thick that it runs into 296 pages – fine print mind you!

Now, for DG Leslie to be the leader of these thousands of highly literate and critical men and women who are business; professional and public leaders themselves, but can band together voluntarily to serve Rotary, to serve Rotary without salary and wages; and cannot put in claims for seeing your doctor and cannot put in claims for petrol and definitely no overtime; like all my Rotarian friends in this room, definitely requires from DG Leslie, lots of peoples skills. Not only people skills, but also more importantly, to us Rotarians, DG Leslie must know his job! Highly literate people are easy to govern, but difficult to rule, especially if you don’t know your job! Well, ladies and gentlemen, for 25 years DG Leslie has worked on his job skills both at his home club, the Rotary Club of Gombak. and in the wider Rotary world, the District. He has served in most club positions, becoming his club’s President in 1997. He has served the District as the Vocational Chairman; Assistant Governor; Membership Development and Retention Chairman; District General Secretary; organizes District Conferences and Assemblies; attended Rotary conferences and forums held by world wide Rotary clubs in Bangkok Taipei; Jakarta and Rotary conventions in Chicago and Birmingham. So, Ladies and Gentlemen, DG Leslie really and truly knows his job. He can therefore discuss with you authoritatively later on how

Rotary can joins hands together with you to address many of society ‘s social, health and environmental issues.

Even at the personal level, his own rice bowl, he deals with only one important commodity - people, people and people. He and his spouse, Zeal, run an executive search and business consultancy which sources human capital from China; India; Indonesia and the Philippines. By being here today to give this luncheon talk and to be a panelist for our discussion, we must say DG Leslie has sacrificed a lot of his Rotary, business and personal time for our Club. You must know, beginning from 1st July, 2009 until March 2010, DG Leslie has to personally and officially visit and to give report cards to all the over 70 clubs under his governance. Also having just started two months ago, from May, he has been officially invited to attend over 40 Rotary Clubs Installations all over the country and not forgetting that he has to preside or attend many Assemblies and Conferences and to address Club and District Rotary functions, like now, today’s function. Today’s function is in fact, is recorded in this District Handbook, page 286 and I notice that our Club is the only Club where DG Leslie gives a talk and on such a project during his whole year as District Governor. I think DG Leslie deserves a loud applause from us. It is, therefore our good fortune that despite such a heavy schedule, DG Leslie has consented to address us and to join our NGOs friends later in a panel discussion. Ladies and gentlemen, let us welcome our District Governor Leslie Salehhudin to launch our Project, “Join Hands With Rotary – Action is in your Hands” and later to give us his talk.

SPEAKERS TEXT

DG PP Leslie Salehuddin gave a summary firstly of Rotary International in general and its partners, and later the local scene of Rotary Clubs in Malaysia and its partners.

He gave an insight on what principals Rotary was founded on namely its friendship and fellowship among its members and later it spread to doing community service work Rotary also had its partners in the form of other NGOs jointly working together for the betterment of the less fortunate and the community at large. Eg. working with world organizations such as WHO, UNICEF and others. The Rotary Foundation has also contributed large amount of financial aid for ambassadorial scholarships, sending out GSE teams around the world, MIM Programs and teaming up with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to eradicate polio and among others programs as well. All these information can be obtained at its website at www.Rotary.org.

In the local scene, each Rotary Club in Malaysia has in one way or the other has teamed up with local NGOs eg. St.John’s Ambulance, Kiwanis, Pink Triangle, various orphanages, old folks homes and many others to jointly carry out humanitarian projects for the benefit of the less fortunate.

Rotary do not have deep pockets to dish out financial aid, but we do have volunteers who can contribute in different areas of expertise and hopefully we can be the catalyst for others to follow and maybe for the government to take over the projects.

THANKING OF GUEST SPEAKER

PDG Dr. Paul Lee thanked DG PP Leslie Salehuddin in the usual Rotary manner and thanked him for launching the dialogue on Join Hands With Rotary – Actions Are In Your Hands with the various NGOs present.

responsibility in the year ahead,” said Kenny, a member of the Rotary Club of Grangemouth, Scotland. “It is in the hands of outgoing officers . who will continue to serve as a guide and resource for others. And it is, most of all, in the hands of every member of every single Rotary club.

“I have said before that I believe it is time to give Rotary back to the Rotarians,” he added. “I believe very strongly in the autonomy of each Rotary club, and in the power of the individual Rotarian to make a difference.”

Kenny’s message and the 2009-10 RI theme, The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands , resonated with attendees.

“The theme is an appropriate one. It recognizes, as John said, that every Rotarian has a responsibility to help Rotary grow,” said Angelo Loumbas, 2009-10 president of the Chicago club.

Robert Knuepfer Jr., a Chicago club member and governor-elect of District 6450, said the theme reflects the history and legacy of Rotary. “The founders took business and professional leaders from the community to give service back to the community,” he said. “The outcome has always been in the hands of individuals and not the organization.”

“I think it’s wonderful; he is right on target,” added John Spitkovsky, a member of the club since 2000.

Jorge Aguilar, who was inducted as president of the Rotaract Club of Chicago, said the emphasis on the future is important to his club. “In Rotaract, we see ourselves as the next generation. We need to get the word out and set up great service projects, and we will be successful.”

Kenny also reminded the Chicago club of the deep connections between Rotary and Scotland. Paul Harris’s wife, Jean Thomson, hailed from Edinburgh. Harris named their first home after a road in Edinburgh, and Jean returned to the city after Harris’s death. To learn more about Harris’s early history, visit Rotary History and Archives or the Harris timeline at the Rotary Global History Fellowship.

Making a difference, one child at a time By Dan Nixon

For more than a decade, Robert Beck has provided input to the U.S.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <http://www.cdc.gov/> as a public representative on the National Vaccine Advisory Committee.

Earlier this year, he fulfilled a desire to do something hands-on with vaccines.

An attorney and member of the Rotary Club of Fluvanna County (Palmyra), Virginia, Beck traveled to India to help vaccinate children against polio during National Immunization Days (NIDs) in February. He was part of a 43-member Rotarian team led by Noelle Galperin, 2008-09 District 6990 PolioPlus subcommittee chair and a member of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables, Florida, and Luis Ortega, then a member of the Rotary Club of Miami Dadeland-Pinecrest, Florida.

The team served at immunization booths in Chandigarh, where families brought their children to receive the oral polio vaccine. After this first phase of the NIDs, Beck and his team followed detailed, hand-drawn maps into the city’s poorest areas.

“Picture each vaccination team walking through dense slums, across garbage troughs, and through drainpipes and all manner of debris, animals, and structures to vaccinate needy children,” Beck says. “Add air thick with dirt and pollutants, so that we often could not see the end of the street. Then include the smells of decay, garbage, and insects, and you have what each team encountered each day.”

Beck is quick to add, however, that there was more to the scene.

“One must also draw into that picture the smiling faces of beautiful people and especially children, mothers dressed in colorful native clothes, and their offers of food and drink and their sincere thanks for our efforts,” he says. “Only then can you see why we went back each day. We really believed we were making a difference, even if it was only one child at a time.”

While in India, Beck and his team also visited several Rotary club-supported projects, including:

subcommittee chairs. I encourage you to visit this site regularly to receive the most recent information concerning Humanitarian Grants.

Application ProcessingHigh volumes of application are expected in the first and second quarters of the Rotary year. We appreciate your patience in receiving communications from Humanitarian Grants staff during this high volume time.

In an effort to help facilitate the processing of applications there are two ways applications can be submitted: 1) via e-mail to [email protected] or 2) by fax to the new Humanitarian Grants fax line 1-847-556-2151.

Please only send the application via one of these methods to avoid duplicate processing. You will receive an acknowledgement of your application within 1-2 weeks of receipt. All applications are processed based on the date they are received and only applications that are complete and meet all requirements for funding will be forwarded for approval based on the date they are complete.

World ReportingWorld Reporting is an initiative created in April 2006 to help ensure that Rotary clubs and districts maintain a high standard of reporting compliance. A World Reporting analysis is compiled twice a year tracking each district’s reporting percentage for Humanitarian Grant projects. Any district with an overall reporting compliance below 70 percent for two consecutive grant reporting analyses may be suspended from participating in Humanitarian Programs. The twice yearly analyses are compiled approximately two weeks before the October and April Trustee meetings.

The April 2009 World Report analysis identified 174 districts that were 100% compliant with reporting. The Trustees commend these districts for their achievement and hope that they will serve as role models for other districts by maintaining this high level of stewardship.

The analysis also identified eight districts that were less than 70% compliant with reporting for two or more consecutive analyses and had more than one non-compliant grant in each analysis. In accordance with Foundation policy, the Trustees suspended these districts from participation in the Humanitarian Grants Program, effective 15 May 2009. These districts will be lifted from suspension when they reach 90% reporting compliance and have successfully reported on all district-sponsored grants. To date, four of the suspended districts have already been lifted from suspension.

Additionally, please note that the Humanitarian Grants Program sends quarterly reminders to project sponsors with copies to district governors, district Rotary Foundation committee chairs and district grants subcommittee chairs when grants are more than 15, 18, 21, 24 or 30 months overdue on grant reporting. These letters are sent on a quarterly basis in September, December, February and June of each Rotary year. When grant sponsors are more than 21 months overdue on reporting they are listed on the RI website for failure to report on grant funding. If a club has not reported on a grant for more than 30 months, it may be recommended to the RI Board for termination for being in financial arrears with Rotary International. We appreciate

your efforts to keep clubs in your district up to date on reporting to avoid these consequences.

District Simplified Grant MailingNext month, districts will receive via e-mail the annual District Simplified Grant mailing, which contains important information about District Simplified Grants and your district’s spending limit for 2010-11. This information will only be sent to districts that are not participating in the Future Vision pilot. Future Vision pilot districts will be contacted separately about their participation in District Grants. The mailing will also include an updated Humanitarian Grants staff sheet and a File Activity Report of the district’s grant activity. Please make sure to read the contents of this mailing carefully. Getting an early and organized start to District Simplified Grants and reviewing the status of your grant activity will help pave the way to success!

I hope these updates have been helpful. For further information about Humanitarian Grants you can send e-mails to [email protected].

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Humanitarian Grants Program and for the incredible support you provide to Rotarians and clubs in your district.

RI president urges Rotarians to make world a better place By Arnold R. Grahl

RI President John Kenny addresses the Rotary Club of Chicago as one of his first official acts. Photo courtesy David Phelps/Rotary Club of Chicago Rotary International President John Kenny urged Rotarians to take steps toward making the world a better place during a visit to the Rotary Club of Chicago on 7 July.

Kenny addressed members of the Chicago club, the birthplace of Rotary, as one of his first official acts, a long-standing tradition for incoming RI presidents. Noting that the world faces immense challenges, he quoted the Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu, who said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

“We know how to take that step,” Kenny said. “We will take that step through our Rotary emphases. We will take it through projects in water, health and hunger, and literacy; through club and district projects; and with the help of our Rotary Foundation.”

During the luncheon, which served to install club officers and recognize Paul Harris Fellows and other donors, Kenny reiterated his conviction that individual Rotarians will play the biggest role in the future of the organization.

Humanitarian Grants Updates

Dear District Leaders,

Greetings from Evanston! On behalf of all the Humanitarian Grants Program staff, I would like to wish you a Happy New Rotary Year. As we embark on another busy year, I wanted to provide you with some updates related to Humanitarian Grants. Please note that these updates only pertain to grant activity in the 2009-10 Rotary year and apply to both Future Vision pilot and non-pilot districts.

Humanitarian Grants Budget ReductionsAs you are likely aware, at their April 2009 meeting the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation made some important budget decisions, many of which directly impact Humanitarian Grants. The Matching Grant budget was significantly reduced; Volunteer Service Grants were phased out as of 1 July 2009; and Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants will only be approved to support water and sanitation projects as part of the RI/USAID International H2O Alliance. Read more about the decisions and their operational impact.

Matching Grants UpdateThe reduced amount of World Fund available for Matching Grants in 2009-10 has resulted in the following program changes:

Competitive Matching Grants in October 2009 only. The Trustees determined that they would consider Matching Grant requests of US$25,001-US$150,000 only once in 2009-10, at their October 2009 meeting. Matching Grant applications requesting World Fund awards of over US$25,000 must be received at the Foundation by 1 August 2009. US$0 World Fund awards. Matching Grant applications requesting a US$0 match from the Foundation can be submitted at any time from 1 July 2009 through 31

March 2010. In order to use this option, at least part of the funding for the Matching Grant must be District Designated Funds (DDF), and the minimum project funding total is US$10,000.

Please note also that if matching funds are requested from TRF, the minimum request is US$5,000. The financing of a MG application can be updated at any time prior to approval to request a US$0 match from the TRF World Fund. Sponsors of pending applications will be notified of this option when the MG budget has been fully committed and updates about the budget will be posted to the Rotary website.

Clubs and districts are encouraged to submit applications early in the new Rotary year if they hope to obtain a World Fund match. If projects are still in the planning stage at this time, it is best to prepare your application without a TRF World Fund match and fund the project with a combination of DDF and cash as explained above.

Humanitarian Grants Staff ReorganizationIn response to the reduced program budget, the Humanitarian Grants operational budget has also been reduced and staff members have been reorganized to provide optimal service to Rotarians. Click here for an updated staff territories sheet. Please note that staff members are organized based on the geographic territory in which the grant project is taking place.

Humanitarian Grants District Support ForumThe Rotary Foundation is pleased to offer the Humanitarian Grants District Support Forum, an online forum designed to provide information and resources to those district leaders that work most closely with Humanitarian Grants. This forum, which is available via Member Access, is available to district governors, district governors elect, district Rotary Foundation committee chairs and district grants

• A hospital in Delhi where surgery is performed to rebuild the deformed limbs of polio survivors, usually without charge

• A Rotarian-sponsored vocational training center, where young women learn to make clothing designs and patterns to obtain better jobs

• An advanced eye care center established by Rotarians in India and the United States

• A school that provides hearing-impaired children with hearing aids and an education

“My Rotary PolioPlus experience has given me a profound appreciation for what it means to be a Rotarian,” Beck says. “Rotary programs are empowering local people, communities, and governments to create local solutions in which all may derive pride. PolioPlus <http://www.rotary.org/en/ServiceAndFellowship/Polio/Pages/ridefault.aspx> and my fellow Rotarians have made me proud to be a Rotarian.”

THE FOUR- WAY TEST

Of The Things We Think,Say, or Do.

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
