A t the end of the 2014/15 academic year, we are more conscious than ever of the impact of the support that you, our donors

and friends, give to Guildhall School.

In a year where more students than ever before received financial support from the Scholarships Fund and the Hardship Fund combined, we were thrilled by the number of students and staff who jumped at the chance to express their thanks to our supporters during the inaugural Guildhall Thank You Day.

In May we had the pleasure of meeting a group of individuals who either had already or were considering making a gift to the School in their wills, at our first Legacy Afternoon Tea. As a ‘legator’ myself, I can appreciate how much thought goes into these decisions and how deeply legacy supporters care about securing the future of Guildhall for generations of students to come. It was wonderful to hear the often very personal stories behind these decisions.

Our Beyond the Stage appeal drew attention to some of the diverse and inspirational activities that our students and staff are involved in away from the spotlight of the auditorium. We are delighted that more than 100 of you were moved to give to this appeal in support of our work both on and off the stage.

This year, the School has continued to expand its horizons. In April, our Opera Scenes toured to Shanghai Grand Theatre for two sell-out performances, paving the way for further collaborations with China in the future and continuing with a Drama production scheduled for Spring 2016. Meanwhile, the Centre for Young Musicians will launch another branch in Saffron Walden in October, further increasing our provision of high-quality, progressive music training for under 18s in the UK.

Looking further ahead, we are thrilled that Sir Simon Rattle will become Artist-in-Association with the Guildhall School and the Barbican Centre when he takes up his post as Artistic Director of the London Symphony Orchestra in 2017. Our students have already benefited from this association, performing with Sir Simon and the LSO in July.

We are grateful to the alumni who have freely given their time and talent to the School over the last year, performing in the Alumni Recital Series and the Josephine Hart Poetry Hour to raise money for the Scholarships Fund. You can read more about these and other performance highlights in the pages to follow.

With thanks for your continuing support.

Poetry with Hart

On 10 November 2014, some of Guildhall’s most eminent Acting alumni came together for a very special celebration: an evening of poetry to commemorate the centenary of the First World War and to celebrate the goodwill of poet and Guildhall alumna Josephine Hart.

Actors Damian Lewis, Dominic West, Niamh Cusack, Emily Berrington and Freddie Fox were joined by Guildhall Director of Drama Christian Burgess for a recital of thirty WW1 poems, including Wilfred Owen’s Dulce et Decorum Est, W. B. Yeats’ An Irish Airman Foresees His Death and Rudyard Kipling’s Epitaphs of The War.The event was the first Josephine Hart Poetry Hour to be staged in Guildhall’s stunning new concert hall facility, which was packed out by alumni and supporters on the night. Run by the Josephine Hart Poetry Foundation, the Josephine Hart Poetry Hour aims to bring poetry in performance to a wider public audience.

Irish-born writer and producer Josephine Hart studied drama at Guildhall in the 1960s and went on to lead a highly-successful career in literature, theatre and television. Her novel Damage was the basis for the 1992 film of the same name, directed by Louis Malle and starring Jeremy Irons, Miranda Richardson and Juliette Binoche. A lifelong supporter of the arts, Josephine’s legacy includes the Josephine Hart Prize for Best Performance of a Poem by an Actor, which was established at Guildhall in her memory by M&C Saatchi in 2012. M&C Saatchi also supports Acting scholarships at Guildhall.

Eliot Shrimpton, Guildhall’s Head of Academic Studies (Drama) said: “It was Josephine’s belief that great poetry should be heard being read by great actors, and we were thrilled to welcome back some very familiar faces for this evening of celebration. The event was held in support of Guildhall School Scholarships Fund and provided a wonderful opportunity both to honour the life of Josephine Hart and to support the next generation of Guildhall actors.”

Thank You DayThis donor booklet is one way that we at Guildhall try to convey our immense gratitude to you, our supporters, for your generosity. However, there are many Guildhall students and staff members who also want to say ‘thank you’ and show their appreciation for every donor and volunteer that helps make what we do at Guildhall possible.

The Development & Alumni Relations Office decided to organise a dedicated ‘Thank you day’ on Tuesday 10 February. The event saw staff and students throng the Silk Street foyer to show their gratitude. More than 100 students and staff left heartfelt thank you notes and talked passionately about the way in which your support has changed their lives.

It was a fantastic day, with many students eager to demonstrate just how much it means for them to have your support. We have edited a 2-minute video of their messages. To see for yourself how your support makes a difference go to gsmd.ac.uk/impact and watch it now.

“I’m delighted that we hosted our first ever ‘Guildhall Thank You Day’. It’s absolutely vital to say ‘thank you’ to our many supporters, and it was inspiring to see so many students and staff showing their gratitude.” Principal Barry Ife

NEWS

Autumn Our 2014/15 season got off to a fantastic start with Verdi’s Requiem conducted by Mark Shanahan and performed by the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra & Chorus in the Barbican Hall.

We were also treated to three powerful drama productions in the autumn term: True Dare Kiss by Debbie Horsfield, South Downs & The Browning Version directed by Wyn Jones; and Her Naked Skin by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, directed by the Vice Principal and Director of Drama Christian Burgess.

In November we welcomed back our former Resident Producer Stephen Medcalf to direct Dvorák’s warm, funny and wonderfully lyrical early opera The Cunning Peasant, and our autumn term concluded with Opera Scenes in the intimate performance space of the Milton Court Studio Theatre.

Spring The New Year saw nine Guildhall postgraduates singers perform in Monteverdi’s Orfeo, a collaboration between The Royal Opera House and the

Roundhouse. The students sang in the chorus and shadowed principal singers in the cast as understudies, gaining great experience in this brand new staging of the work. In February, we welcomed a stellar line-up of performers for the Joan Havill Celebration as part of our Alumni Recital Series. Sa Chen, Paul Lewis, Serhiy Salov and other former students of Joan returned to Guildhall to celebrate her 35 years of teaching at the School. Third-year actors returned to the stage in the spring term with brilliantly funny performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night and the comedy continued in our opera double bill of Arnold’s The Dancing Master and Donizetti’s I Pazzi per progetto conducted by Guildhall’s Head of Opera Dominic Wheeler. Jazz fans were treated to a rich and varied programme of jazz events across seven days as part of the Guildhall Jazz Festival.

Summer An obvious highlight of our summer term was the centenary of the School’s most prestigious prize; the Gold Medal, which resulted in two winners (read more on p.13). Our Faculty Artists Series featured the talents of Mahan Esfahani (Professor of Harpsichord), Levon Chilingirian (Professor of Violin) and several esteemed piano professors who joined forces in a Piano Extravaganza. Alumni Lucy Parham and Simon Russell Beale returned to Guildhall to perform Réverie: The life and loves of Claude Debussy for the Alumni Recital Series. This special performance

saw acclaimed actor Simon Russell Beale narrating letters by the composer whilst Lucy Parham played Debussy works on the piano. In a wonderful collaboration, the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra joined the LSO Discovery Choirs, LSO Community Choir and LSO under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle in a new children’s opera, The Monster in the Maze by Jonathan Dove. Our 2014/15 year concluded with a spectacular finale: Guys and Dolls. Actors, musicians and theatre technicians came together to produce a stunning production with singing, set and choreography the West End would be proud of.

Beyond the StageThis year we launched an appeal called ‘Guildhall Beyond the Stage’ which focused on some of the extraordinary work Guildhall staff and students are involved in away from public view.

For more than three decades, our staff and students have led a diverse and inspirational programme of activities in communities across London and further afield. Our appeal featured case studies of some of these less visible off-stage activities including Guildhall students teaching free piano lessons to Barbican residents (The People’s Piano) and others forming a music collaboration with people affected by homelessness (The Messengers).

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who gave to Beyond the Stage. We have been delighted by your warm and generous response which has raised a total of £25,000 to help Guildhall students and staff to continue their extraordinary work both on and off the stage.

Gold Medal

On 13 May Guildhall celebrated the centenary of the music Gold Medal, one of the longest-standing and most prestigious prizes at the School.

Recognising the outstanding achievement and skill of many young people on the brink of their professional careers, the Gold Medal has previously been awarded to such established names as Benjamin Luxon (1963), Tasmin Little (1986) and Bryn Terfel (1989).

This year bass Milan Siljanov, mezzo-soprano Marta Fontanals-Simmons, tenor Thomas Atkins and soprano Jennifer Witton each performed a short programme with piano accompaniment followed by a second half of arias with the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra. In a unexpected decision that fittingly replicated the results of the inaugural Gold Medal in 1915, the prize for outstanding soloists was awarded to two performers, Jennifer and Marta.

“The Gold Medal Competition has a sense of occasion unlike anything else in Guildhall’s calendar; the massive backing from supporters, friends and family creates a fantastic atmosphere on the evening. Playing in the viola section is the perfect place to be, slap bang in the middle of the orchestra, just as close to the triangle as the conductor. Being at the centre when the orchestra really comes together and we all have the same understanding and thought in unison, the feeling is indescribable.

I have been a member of the orchestra for the Gold Medal three times but this evening was truly one to remember, and not least, because for the first time in almost 80 years two singers won. The most difficult thing I found this year was keeping my concentration on the job in hand while being completely astounded by the soloists in their first run through with the orchestra. It took me some time to remember that Milan, Marta, Thomas and Jennifer can also be seen day to day around Guildhall going about their study and spending time with those doing the same.

Amongst all the stress of exams and everything else going on at this time of the year, to perform alongside good friends and utterly outstanding soloists, I feel like we’re all winners – even if there can only be one (or two) gold medals.”

Fraser Keddie, a viola player in the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra and Guildhall Fellow, describes his experience participating in this special event.

SCHOLAR PROFILES

At a time when tuition fees for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses are £9,000 and above, the Scholarships Fund is vital in enabling almost half of Guildhall students to pursue their professional studies in the heart of London. We spoke to two scholars to find out how much your support means to them.

Tom VerneyOpera Course (2014), currently studying for Artist DiplomaSupported by Independent Opera

What’s the best thing about studying here? The teaching staff come from a variety of disciplines, so the breadth of expertise available is unparalleled, and leads to an exciting and lively working environment. Living in London itself is also a huge benefit, as the variety of shows and concerts on offer every day is an inspiration in itself – showing us what we can achieve if we work for it.

What opportunities have you had so far as a Guildhall School student, that have particularly stood out for you? I was lucky enough to be involved in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream when the Opera department put it on in the

Barbican Theatre – which was an experience I will never forget, and was my first-fully staged opera with full orchestra. Jonathan Dove’s Pinocchio was a project of epic proportions that will live long in my memory, and singing solo live on BBC Radio 3 to advertise the baroque double bill was also a great opportunity.

How has being awarded a scholarship helped you during your time at the Guildhall School?Put simply, it made it possible. It has given me time to work on my singing without the pressure of having to earn the whole time – allowing me to take on opportunities that provide good exposure, and the chance to learn new things, but that don’t necessarily pay. Without this, my focus would have been elsewhere, and there is no question in my mind that I would not be anywhere near the level I am at today.

“I couldn’t believe it when I was accepted for the scholarship. I still remember holding the letter in my hands and thinking ‘Who does this?’ To be willing to help young people to pursue their dreams is a beautiful thing.”

Abigail Richardson

MA Drama student Supported by Maureen Amar and Richard Jenkins (who are profiled overleaf)

Tell us about how you came to be at Guildhall? It sounds cheesy, but I knewI wanted to be an actor after performing in a school production when I was eight. At 16, I toured with a professional show and found myself once again feeling right at home. Whilst living in France, I studied my undergraduate degree in French Modern Literature and then applied to Guildhall. Despite its stellar reputation, the place had an amazing warmth and the auditions were so human. I was overjoyed when I was accepted onto the MA Drama programme.

How have you found the Guildhall experience so far? Guildhall has really opened my eyes. Sometimes I feel almost guilty that I get to be here, as I wish everyone could have this experience. My course is so intense and diverse; we go from acrobatics to singing to voice to circus to project rehearsals… we never stop! The tutors are incredible and the course has broadened my mind and changed me in the best possible way.

What barriers might you have faced had the scholarship not been available to you?In France university education is free so anyone can study. When I decided I wanted to go to drama school in England I did worry that I was living in a dream world – how could I find the money to pay tuition and support myself? I couldn’t believe it when I was accepted for the scholarship. I still remember holding the

letter in my hands and thinking ‘Who does this?’ To be willing to help young people to pursue their dreams is a beautiful thing. I mentally thank Maureen and Richard every day. This course requires so much energy – you have to be really present and open, and you can’t do that if you’re worrying about money.

DONOR PROFILES

In 2014/15 over 900 people made gifts in support of the Guildhall School. We are extremely grateful to every one of our supporters. Their generosity enables the Guildhall School to help the most talented individuals to access the highest standard of professional training. We talk to Maureen Amar and Richard Jenkins and the Principal, Professor Barry Ife and his wife Dr Trudi Darby about why they give to Guildhall.

Maureen Amar & Richard Jenkins

For over a decade Maureen and Richard have generously funded scholarships for Guildhall students. These scholarships give talented young performers such as Abigail Richardson (previous page) the opportunity to learn their craft with significantly less financial pressure. They have also participated in Guildhall’s Take Your Seat campaign raising money for the new state-of-the art facilities at Milton Court.

You have been generous supporters of Guildhall School for over a decade. What motivated you to support Guildhall in particular? Both: Guildhall brings together accomplished and talented instrumental, vocal, drama and technical theatre students in one institution, alongside a very appreciative and supportive Development department. We also had the personal motivation that a friend of ours attended Guildhall in the 1960’s and was forced to abandon his studies due to lack of finance.

You take an active interest in the careers of the students you support. Has it given you a sense of personal satisfaction to see them progress? Both: It’s enough to have contributed to the development of any talented career, but there’s always an exhilaration when they get that lucky break that takes them to the next level. Several of our students have become good friends and as our sponsorship expands we’re becoming a couple of septo-euro-groupies!

Do you believe it’s important for people who are in a position to ‘give something back’ to do so?Both: Absolutely, when you’ve attained a level of financial security there’s no point in accumulating more for personal possession. In 2002 we established our Trust Fund to provide postgraduate funding for the arts and sciences and to establish the pattern for the distribution of our estate once we are gone. For the past thirteen years it has been the most rewarding and pleasurable investment we have ever made and it has given a new purpose and direction to our lives now that we are both in our seventies.

“Several of our students have become good friends and as our sponsorship expands we’re becoming a couple of septo-euro-groupies!”

Barry Ife and Trudi DarbySince Professor Barry Ife became Principal of the Guildhall School in 2004, both he and his wife Dr Trudi Darby have shown exceptional generosity through their financial support. Supporting all areas of Guildhall from scholarships to Milton Court, Barry and Trudi have donated over £150,000 in the past 11 years and have recently made a significant legacy pledge.

Why do you support the Guildhall School? Barry: I’ve always tried to lead by example and leading on fundraising is one of the most important things I can do as Principal. I have tremendous admiration for the Guildhall School – the enthusiasm of the students, the dedication of the staff, the quality of the work and the infectious buzz that all of our visitors pick up on as soon as they come into the building. But training in the performing arts is expensive and students have to bear more and more of the cost. If we value what we have, we have to dig deeper to keep it alive.Trudi: Because it’s such a wonderful place, and one where I feel—I can see—that I can make a difference. The School is small enough for me to be able to get to know the staff and students and see any benefits that I’ve helped to fund. There is an immense pleasure in seeing students develop over their time at the School, being able to follow their careers when they go out into the industry and knowing that I’ve played a small part in enabling it to happen.

What fascinates you about the training of young performing artists?Trudi: No question, it’s the sheer dedication and professionalism. I particularly support Technical Theatre and Stage Management students, and I’m completely bowled over by the quality of the work that they produce. Their commitment to team work is unrivalled by anything I’ve seen anywhere else, and would be the envy of anyone trying to run a department in any organisation. Barry: I truly believe that the performing arts make a vital

contribution to the health of our society. Music brings the abstract and the physical into perfect balance, and sets harmony and discord into creative tension.

Drama helps us to understand what it is to be human and what human beings are capable of, for better and for worse. And the techies create a space in the theatre in which the audience can share a collective experience.

You have both invested a huge amount in the School and its students. What are the most important opportunities you see for the School in the next few years?Barry: I think the Guildhall School is in a good place with a strong platform for future development. We train our students well, they learn the importance of teamwork and we’re mastering the art of partnership with the professions. The here and now – bringing people together – are fundamental to our training, but we have to learn how to engage with the world outside London and outside the UK. Creativity and imagination are key to our future but the imagination is a hungry beast that feeds off contact and engagement. Remember: nothing worth doing is worth doing alone, and it seems to me that ensemble is our greatest strength.

“If we value what we have, we have to dig deeper to keep it alive.”

With the recent changes to higher education funding from the government and the increasing cost of study, there is a growing need to increase the money available to help our students. These are just a few ways in which you can make a difference:

How you can help?

Become a member of the Guildhall Circle and enjoy advance information on all of our productions and priority booking for major performances

Set up a regular monthly donation through our Beyond the Stage annual appeal

Join us at one of our fundraising events such as the Guildhall School Summer Gala Evenings or Take to the Stage

Provide a named scholarship and directly enable a young musician, actor or theatre technician to take their first steps towards their professional career

Work with the School to provide transformative support for a specific area of our performance, teaching and other activities

Make provision for a legacy to the Guildhall School in your will and help us to provide support for future generations of talented young artists.

For further information please contact the Development Office on 020 7382 7179 or [email protected]
