Welcome

02

Welcome to our new 2020/21 Business Training Solutions brochure, launched at a time when the College and the Cornish business community have been presented with significant challenges and a situation with the Covid-19 pandemic that none of us have faced before. These challenges though must be faced together. There has never been a more important time for us to get and stay connected, to come together to identify and resolve the socio-economic issues now facing our communities, our staff and our customers. We have to adapt and prepare as best we can to navigate the ‘new normal’ and I can assure you that the College is primed and as ready as ever to work with our local employer partners to ensure your positive recovery becomes our benchmark for success. For Truro and Penwith College Business it has been a remarkable year for many reasons. The Department for Education’s (DfE) Employer Satisfaction Survey ranked us as the top College provider for employer satisfaction in Cornwall and among the top in the South West. Outstanding levels of learner achievement continue with 2019 DfE Apprenticeship achievement rates placing the College in the top 10 of all 167 college providers in the country, while we were also recognised as the best provider of Hair and Beauty Apprenticeships in the UK at the 2020 AAC Apprenticeship Awards.

Construction has begun on a £7million specialist technology facility at Truro College, part of our partnership in the South West Institute of Technology, that will match our facilities with the best in the UK and keep Cornwall at the forefront of digital and engineering education. We have become the education partner for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, as we work in partnership to boost nursing numbers on Cornwall’s frontline, adding to our already successful Firefighter and Tri-Service Safety Officer Apprenticeships. In non-Apprenticeship areas; 98% of ILM Leadership and Management learners report they are anticipating a positive impact on their role and organisation after completing training in 2019/20 and our training was in demand as far afield as the Lake District. 2020 will no doubt be remembered for the impact of Covid-19. The efforts of staff across the College have been remarkable in delivering online learning and support to help employers at this challenging time. This commitment and support will continue as we strive to ensure that the year is also remembered for the recovery of our resilient and vibrant business community. We have already seen some positive outcomes; online learning has provided employers with a level of flexibility that will see benefits throughout our recovery and beyond and you will find details of our new remote learning offer throughout this brochure. We are grateful to all our partners in Cornwall’s business community who are pivotal in shaping our programmes and we look forward to working in partnership with you.

Recovering from Covid-19

SUPPORTING BUSINESSES TO BOUNCE BACK

FULLY FUNDED PILOT TRAINING Many businesses have identified new opportunities, markets, or have adopted new working practices as a result of the challenges caused by COVID-19.

The College has access to funding and grants that allows it to work in partnership with businesses to address emerging training needs through the development of new courses and free pilots to hone course content. Contact the team to discuss how we can help.

04

COVID-19 and social distancing have required the business community and College to be agile and flexible, adopting a ‘new normal’ as we move into recovery.

The College is committed to continuing its flexible approach and is passionate about being part of the solution that helps businesses to bounce back, grow and exploit new opportunities.

INTRODUCING NEW TALENT & UPSKILLING CURRENT STAFF

Apprenticeships

It is important to remember that Apprenticeships can be used to train current members of staff. With the government funding 95% of the training costs for SMEs and large employers building their Apprenticeship levy, it can be the most cost-effective training option.

Businesses who have identified new opportunities, discovered new revenue streams or are in the process of reopening after COVID-19, will benefit from the added capacity that a new Apprentice can bring to ensure this trend continues as well as fresh energy and ideas.

Find out more about Apprenticeships on page 12.

T Levels

T Levels are new two-year technical and vocational courses coming in September 2020 and are equivalent to three A Levels. T Levels will combine classroom theory, practical learning and a 45-day industry placement to make sure students have real experience of the workplace. If you can offer an industry placement you will benefit from; fresh ideas, new talent, a means of filling your skills gaps, opportunities for staff to develop mentoring and supervisory skills and the reputational benefits of supporting young people.

Find out more on page 10.

Traineeships

A traineeship is a course that includes a work placement that can last from 6 weeks up to 12 months.

Traineeships help 16 to 24-year olds, or 25-year olds with an education, health and care (EHC) plan to prepare for an Apprenticeship or to start their career.

The College supports learners to enhance their maths, English and employability skills alongside a work experience placement within the sector that the learner would like to start their career.

Offering a traineeship placement would enable your business to benefit from the enthusiasm of a young person keen to join your industry and allows time for that young person to get to know your business and develop the skills and knowledge needed to make a positive contribution. If the fit feels right and your business is in the position to commit longer-term, you can employ the learner as an Apprentice, as full time member of staff or offer a longer work placement whilst they study a T Level.

If you are an employer who would like to explore offering traineeship work placements please get in touch with our Apprenticeship team using the contact details on page 13.

WHAT ARE T LEVELST Levels are new two-year technical and vocational courses, which come after GCSEs and are equivalent to three A Levels. T Levels combine classroom theory, practical learning and a 45-day industry placement to make sure students have real experience of the workplace.

Why should MY BUSINESS GET INVOLVED?Employers of all sizes across the country have the opportunity to provide a 45-day industry placement as part of T Levels. These can be undertaken as a block, individual days, or a combination to suit. Placements will offer several benefits to your business:• An opportunity to provide a positive experience for a

young person • A cost-effective recruitment pipeline for entry-level jobs• Help to build the capacity of your business and grow the

skills you need• Opportunity for existing staff to gain experience in

coaching and mentoring• Bringing in imaginative and new ideas• Extra resources for day-to-day projects

WHAT SUPPORT WILL BE AVAILABLE?If you can offer a placement, the College will support you at every stage of the process. This will include assistance with the necessary paperwork, a careful planning process and support with designing the placement. You will have a named contact for any questions you may have throughout the placement and you should quickly notice tangible benefits of having a student on a longer placement with the skills and knowledge relevant to your industry. Students will come prepared and will have already undertaken substantial classroom-based training in their chosen T Level subject.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF T LEVELS?In the coming years, you will begin to see T Levels appearing on CVs and job applications. Even if you are unable to offer a placement, you can have confidence in recruiting T Level graduates, who will be highly skilled and ready to work. By employing T Level students and creating career opportunities you can be assured of bringing skills and knowledge into your business. T levels are the way of building your workforce and your business.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT T LEVELS?T Levels have been developed in collaboration with employers and will provide the skills and knowledge needed to progress to highly skilled employment, higher level study or an Apprenticeship. T Levels will include an industry placement with an employer so that students can apply their learning in a real workplace environment.

Around 80% of time will be spent in the classroom with the remaining 20% being spent on placement. This differs to an Apprenticeship, which is typically 80% on-the-job and 20% in the classroom and more suited to those who feel ready to enter the workforce or wish to gain a qualification alongside their current role.

BESPOKE TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT SOLUTIONSBespoke training packages allow us to build training programmes to suit employer’s needs, that reflect the individual values, challenges and ambitions of the business.Bespoke courses are available in a broad range of subject areas including:

• Leadership and management• Marketing• Coaching• Computing and IT• Customer service• English for speakers of other languages (ESOL)

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMMES

Bespoke solutions allow businesses to work in partnership with training experts to design solutions from scratch or adapt content within accredited programmes such as ILM leadership and management qualifications. Programmes often include supporting activities such as individual and team coaching, 360-degree feedback, psychometric assessments, action learning sets and facilitated workplace projects.

CORNWALL PARTNERSHIP NHS FOUNDATION TRUSTCFT has developed a bespoke leadership programme with the College that focuses on key principles of the Trust’s compassionate leadership model and provides learners with a Level 5 ILM qualification.

Learners have an internal coach at CFT who has also been trained by the College in 360-degree appraisal skills to provide reviews and feedback on leadership performance.

Phil Confue, Chief Executive of CFT, commented: “The nature of the NHS and the challenges our teams face on a daily basis means that a one size fits all, off-the-shelf leadership training programme simply isn’t effective in delivering the results we need.

“The leadership training programmes we deliver here in the Trust need to be delivered by an external provider, who thoroughly understands our challenges and goals. It is a pleasure to work with Truro and Penwith College Business on the delivery of this programme.”

The College delivers a range of professional qualifications from ILM leadership and management, marketing and accountancy to computing, health and safety and language and functional skills.

All our professional qualifications can be found on pages 22-42. If off-the-shelf qualifications don’t fulfil your business goals we offer fully bespoke solutions.
