In a world of constantchange and upheaval -from floods in early 2011up and down the east coastto fires in the west as theyear wrapped up - it is

indeed heartening to writethat our cattle breed ofchoice, Square Meaters, continue to what they weredeveloped to do - to quietlyand efficiently producepremium quality beefquicker and moreconsistently than otherbreeds.

The year that was 2011was another period ofconsolidation for SquareMeaters with a steadystream of enquiry about thebreed through our officeand reports of strongdemand for bulls andfemales to pure andcrossbreeding operations.Once again Square Meatersstood out with some stellarperformances in hoof andhook shows, most notably

at the Perth Royal where amagnificent 490 kilogramsteer entered by DominicAuguste from Chevy Farmwas named the heavyweightchampion on the hoof.Entering steers into hoofand hook competitionsremains the very best way ofpromoting our breed to thewider market so thanks toall who participated atshows and similar eventsthroughout 2011. If you arenot aware of the manyincentives on offer for topperforming steers contactthe office.

Your board was againactive through the past year, meeting via a teleconferencearrangement at monthlyintervals to address issues asthey arose and chart thebreed's future.

Through the year wewere delighted to welcomeChristina Ellnor to theboard. Christina is a verypassionate advocate forSquare Meaters and was thedriving force behind theestablishment of theVictorian Breed PromotionGroup which is going aheadin leaps and bounds. Herefforts proved infectiouswith Brad Perry followingChristina's lead andspearheading the formationmid-year of the NSWBreeders Group.Congratulations and thanksto both Christina and Brad, and to all the breeders whoare supporting theseinitiatives. The formation ofsuch groups in the wake ofthe success of thepioneering Queenslandgroup was one of theobjectives of our 2010marketing plan. It would begreat to see a members sub-group in each state, socontact Cheryl for moredetails about how theAssociation can assist you inthat process. The 2010 marketing plan

was also about makingbreeding and registeringSquare Meaters easier andsimpler, and throughout the

year your Board hasrevisited some pastdecisions and initiatives tosee if they could beimproved. One noticeablechange is the decision tocollect membership feesmid-year - by July 1 - ratherthan at the beginning of anyyear. The move will notonly make our annualaccounting process moremeaningful and transparentbut will take the pressure offmembers around the busyand sometimes expensiveChristmas period. We alsointroduced a newmembership category fornew breeders whichacknowledges that for thefirst year or two they will befocused on breeding upnumbers of animals ratherthan selling them.We are also currentlylooking at a re-design of theC1 form to make it morepractical and logical and sothat more breeders areencouraged to interimregister more animals.

This year we voted tomake a new provision forgrey genetics to come intothe breed. Registered 'pure'Murray Grey females cannow be entered onto ourcommercial register at theF2 level, which means theirfemale calves by stud SquareMeaters bulls can beregistered as F3, and thecalves from those females bystud Square Meaters bullswill be eligible for fullregistration. Of coursebreeders are reminded thatit is in our breed's bestinterests that only greyfemales of the SquareMeaters type are broughtinto our herd book in thismanner.

Following the AGM atCanberra in February weembarked on what provedto be a long and involvedprocess to find an affordablesupplier for our newuniform. Cost was just oneissue we had to contendwith, along with continuityand quantity of supply and

the quality of the final vest. After many years of inputby a lot of people I lookforward to seeing a showring full of the new vests inthe very near future.Mid year the board

reluctantly farewelled WestAustralian directorDominic Auguste. Domput a huge amount of effortinto the board over manyyears and his contributionwill be missed but we fullyunderstand his need to puthis young family first. Thanks Dom and goodluck for the future.

My fellow boardmembers - Johanna vanElten, Steve Moffat, EricRoss and Christina Ellnor -have all acquittedthemselves with enthusiasmand diligence over the pastyear and deserve theheartfelt gratitude of theentire membership. In allour deliberations we havealways endeavoured to putthe breed first, and I believethat level of integrity is inpart why our Associationremains as strong and asdynamic as it is. I wouldlike to particularlyacknowledge the enormouscontribution of Jo VanElten who is stepping downas a director after 6 yearsservice to the board. OurAssociation is all the betterfor her years of insight andpassion

Thanks also must go to

our tireless secretary, CherylMott, who continues tocontribute to the success ofSquare Meaters well beyondthe call of duty. Our breedwould not be where it istoday without Cheryl'scontinuing devotion andenthusiasm. In closing I would ask all

members to consider this. There are now more than40 registered breeds ofcattle in Australia. All offersomething different to theindustry and the consumer. Some are highly successful, some are more successfulthan they deserve to be andsome have limitedcommercial support. Whatis common to those breedsand breed associationswhich are performingstrongly, despite theeconomic vagaries of ourtimes, is the commitmentand passion of theirbreeders and members. We all know that Square

Meaters are excellent atdoing what they weredeveloped to do and thatthey hold very valuable, efficient and cost effectivegenetics for the widerindustry. Our ongoing challenge is

to ensure we continue toput a product into themarket place which isindisputably at the toplevel. If we do that we cannot do anything butsucceed.May 2012 be a year of

abundance for all.

Square Meaters are theideal cattle to generate realincome for their owners, regardless of the size ofyour property.

The outstandingcharacteristics of the breed:their medium frame, earlymaturing, heavily muscledbodies, allow you theflexibility to enter themarket place at severallevels. They provide a multi-streamed income potential:stud sales, commercial sales, animal through mainstreamstockyard sales, direct to abutcher, a paddock to platebusiness, or anycombination of these.

Stud sales:Bulls, cows, calves andheifers which rise to meetthe standards of theSMCAA and made highlyachievable by the inherentqualities of the breed, cangenerate a significantincome stream. production. As Square Meaters bulls

produce naturally polled, moderately framed, 25 – 35kg calves, producers ofsome of the larger beefbreeds are now experiencingthe benefits of cross-breeding Square Meatersbulls with their females, capturing that early growthand more moderate frame. The dairy industry isanother area where SquareMeaters bulls are being usedto advantage, to coverreplacement heifers andminimize calving problems.Yet another potentialincome source for theSquare Meaters breeder.Beef SalesBeing moderately framedwith superior fleshing,Square Meaters steers canbe put throughmaintstream stockyardsales. This is an easy optionwhere animals aretransported to the saleyards, and you sit back and waitfor the cheque.

However, breeding“Squares” opens up beefsales opportunitiesalternative to the saleyardswhere the prices of cattlecan be subject to thevagaries of market andweather conditionselsewhere in Australia;when after deducting theagents fees, the transportcosts, the sale yard fees etc,the cheque is somewhat lessthan what you expected.

Square Meaters breedersare finding a solid marketselling direct to butchers, via a nominated abattoir. Arelationship of trust isdeveloped with the butcherwhere the breeder strives tomeet the steer age, weight, fat cover, requirement of thebutcher and he in turn paysa fair price for a premiumproduct. A weight range of365 – 380 kgs at between

12 – 15 months with evenfat cover yielding a 190 -200kg carcass, is popularwith many butchers.Another level in demand isfor vealers aged 8 – 9months and weighing 300 -340 kgs. Square Meaterswith their explosive earlygrowth and shorter stature, suppoted by a good seasonand good mothering, canachieve these weights forthe premium end of themarket with the breederrewarded for a prime beefproduct. An advantage ofstreamlining your beefproduction business tomeet this vealer market isthat the number of animalson the property is reducedearlier enabling you to carrymore females, and in turn, make more money.Paddock to PlateThere are several Breederssuccessfully operatingpaddock to plate businesses.Without exception, allthose with whom I haveconversed have stated that“demand exceeds supply”and are doing it withoutadvertising. Word ofmouth is a powerful tool. Some have their ownPaddock to Plate businesses, others have formed Co-operative ventures. Eitherway, entering the market atthis level gives the breederthe opportunity to takemore control of his businessthroughout the year andmake greater profits peranimal. In summary, it is the innatecharacteristics of the SquareMeaters breed whichproduces a geneticallytender, lean, pasturefinished, optimum portionsized product for the tablesof Australian families andrestaurants, and opens upmultiple revenue generatingopportunities for thebreeder.

By Cate Stanton

After 5 years of successfullyshowing their stud cattleNaringi Square Meatersstud located in theSouthern Tablelands ofNSW decided to addanother venture to theirbeef enterprise.

Stud principal CateStanton says that it washearing of the efforts ofother breeders in using steercompetitions to raise theprofile of Square Meatersthat encouraged her to “giveit a go”The Stantons’ both lovebeing involved in showingcattle, it’s very differentfrom our day jobs they sayand to add steers to the mix

seemed a logicalprogression. They had seenresults of other SquareMeaters breeders who hadprepared steers and as theyhad a couple of tidy youngsteers at just the right agethe decision was made toprepare them for theNational Capital ShowHoof and Hookcompetition in 2011. Oneof the steers, a SquareMeaters/ Angus / dairycross, was chosen, Cate says,as she remembered readingin an Associationpublication that suggested akeenness to utilise thisspecific cross could open anuntapped market. No doubtthis was aimed more atfemales due to their

superior milking ability aswell as their beefproduction potential. Thesecond steer was a SquareMeaters.

Both steers were weanedin September aged 9months. Feed was good atthe time so they werebasically grass fed withsome supplementation withpasture hay. October sawthem commence theireducation with breaking inand handling. They bothdid well with this and didnot really go backwards. Asone of the traits thatNaringi breed is known foris quietness, these two boysdemonstrated this reallywell. They were easy tohandle and grew well fromthe beginning, somethingthat was evident at the finalpresentation. Quietlyhandled steers usuallyequate to doing well andproducing a carcass withgood colour. Both thesesteers gained top marks formeat and fat colour. The steers were weighedinitially at around 120 kgand the aim was to preparethem for the domesticmedium weight class (341Kg –440 Kg live weight). To

achieve this a weight gain of1-2 kg/ day was optimum.Their feeding regimen wasdesigned with this endproduct in mind. Regularweighing during this time isimportant to determine theideal feeding rations. The end product wasvisually what we werehoping for, remember thiswas the first time we hadattempted this.

Preparing the steers wasreally satisfying. The endresult on judging day wastwo commendable animalsthat while they did notcome in the top half of theleader board certainly didnot come last. They dressed out at 49.7 %& 53.7% and their overallscores were 64 & 61 (topscore was 90). They hadperfect scores for pH, fatand meat colour andscored high marks for ribeye area (EMA) and weightfor maturity. What letthem down was their fatcoverage and that we putdown to our inexperience.

At auction they bothrealised just on 200c per kgso we were pleased. We asked ourselves quitesoon after Canberra what

we had learned from thisexercise and would we do itagain.

We learned that animalselection is really important. The crossbred steer was inhindsight not a great choice;he would never obtain therequired finish due to hisgenetics. He was lovely andquite though so from thatperspective a good animal tolearn with. When selectingit is important to choose asteer with properconformation and bodystructure. A good showprospect should be evenlybuilt. A long lanky calf willrarely fill out enough beforeshow day. Something elsethat we learned was that toundertake this challenge theimportant thing is to gain asmuch knowledge aspossible. Read everythingthat you can aboutproducing steers, Caterecommends. There are anumber of greatpublications, Ag facts fromthe Department ofAgriculture as well as anumber of books by well-known cattle producers.Finding an experiencedmentor is also of use. We are

lucky in our breed there aregreat people around who aremore than willing to helpand offer advice.

Would we do it again? Most definitely, says Cate. While it is hard work it iscertainly fun as well. Wejust love being with ourcattle and we love showingthem. Displaying ourSquare Meaters is a goodway to promote the breed.Exposing them tolandowners who arethinking about getting intocattle and are looking forsomething that issustainable on small acreageis fantastic for the breed.Having a steer at a show orphotos of steers fromprevious years with thecompetition feedback sheetsavailable shows howvaluable the breed can be.

Naringi stud has alreadychosen and broken in the2012 competition steer. Heis a purebred SquareMeaters and seems a goodtype, says Cate, I wouldencourage breeders to havea go at conditionings steersfor competitions if at allpossible. I guarantee youwill enjoy the experience.

By Richard Pisaturo

Allow me to take you for ajourney. A group of friendsmet at a restaurant andafter selecting drinks theyordered entrees of fish andshellfish followed by maincourse of chicken (3) andbeef (3). The place had agreat ambience, con-versation was brisk and theentrees scored 10 out of 10for presentation, colour, texture, taste andaromatics. Most of themain courses were alsoexceptional except for oneof the 3 beef dishes. The following week the

same group went out todinner but to a differentrestaurant and a differentstyle of menu. They orderedalong the same lines as lasttime but this time the mainswere 3 chicken 1 fish and 2beef. I asked the person whohad had the disappointingbeef experience the weekbefore what they werehaving this week and theirresponse was chicken "it'smore predictable!"

It is sadly a scenariowhich plays out all over theworld, but does the

problem belong to theproducer or the end user?I would like to start with

the producer. The termcattleman is equivalent tofood producer. SquareMeaters breeders shouldview the task differently totheir run of the millcolleagues. The SquareMeaters breed was designedto produce a carcass of 120-180 kg milk tooth and noolder than 15mths. Theintention is to turn offweaners to the butcher shopand only if the season wastough would they requirebackgrounding and feedlotting - but still no olderthan 15mths.

To produce high qualitybeef the selection of SquareMeaters should start withthe sire. He needs to have abomb proof temperamentas cattle with flighty naturetend to have meat withelevated pH levels. Cowsneed to be calm but bear inmind that whiletemperament is almostalways genetic, management should alwaysbe considered, especially theway cattle are handled inthe yards.

For a steer to producehigh quality beef he needsto be naturally quiet. Hewon't be a shy feeder andwill produce a carcase withlow pH and no bruising. He'll have the rightstructure, a good top lineand will be full behind theshoulder which representsan eye muscle the sameright through, which makesfor a good diningexperience.

Muscle definition is veryimportant but whileextremely heavily muscledcattle do well in hoofcompetitions the they don'talways eat well due to a lackof fat. The secret is amoderately muscled wellbalanced carcass with fatevenly distributed over it.Feeding Square Meaters.Firstly no or poor feed spellsdisaster. To produce a calf atnine months of 300kg liveweight we start at a 30kgcalf plus 270 days at 1kg perday = 300kg. To achieve thisyou'll need at leastimproved pasture or cropsfor every day of life. From the development of

the breed Square Meatershave been taken up by foodproducers with smaller landholdings and often off-farmjobs. Cropping is often notpossible and pastureimprovement programssometimes fall short. Hencethe importance of

supplementary feedingshould not be under-estimated. It can be assimple as a lick block duringperiods of dry feed. Grainfeeds, whole oats, vitaminsand mineral mix or wholebarley and a vitamin andmineral mix can be used toaid feed shortages and allowanimals to utilize the dryrank feed in the fields.

Ultimately the aim is toraise a calf on a rising planeof nutrition toreach target weights andages.

The most importantfeature of being a foodproducer is to create anatmosphere for quiet cattle, good herbage, a commonsense approach and allianceswith butchers. Foodproducers should also beencouraged to eat what youproduce and to create aprofile on each animal frompaddock to plate. All sortsof detail will help you finetune your operation such asthe sire, dam, the seasonand any supplementaryfeeding as well as monthlyweights up until slaughter. Then when your carcasearrives back at the butchershop take photos and takenote of the dressing outpercentage, yield, fat cover, and yield or saleable meatyield.Don't forget to give some

away to family and friends

and invite your selling agentto try a few cuts. Start topromote and remember thatif you won't eat it then norshould I. Every meat dishshould be an ambassadorfor the next.

Steer competitionsPreparation for comp-etitions consists of manyphases and all areimportant.Select an event: Select anevent that allows for you totake the time out tocompete. Decide if youwant a hoof onlycompetition for a lead up tothe main event then pickthe main event.

While preparing for ahoof and hook competitionbear in mind that everychange in the routine andmanagement of your steerhas a negative reaction soallow at least a monthbetween outings to stabilizeyour steer and keep himputting on weight.Select a class: Work outwhat weight you need yoursteer to be at the time of theevent, work out a daily rateof gain for the duration ofyour preparation and thenwork backwards. You mayeven go so far as tomanipulate your joinings tosuit specific events.

To give yourself the bestchance of success preparesteers in pairs, and if youreally want to do well, cutone of your top bull calvesrather than try to fatten upa poor steer.Breaking In: The break inprocess should start at onemonth of age. Tie up, leadand lightly handle only for amaximum of one hour perday then let the calf returnto his mum. Do this in yourcattle yards and keep mumsettled with feed and so shecan still see the calf. Handlethe calf twice weekly untilyou need to increase

handling. At this time cowand calf need to be on feedfor the whole process.Record monthly weights

and make sure that the cowis not eating all the feed. Ifthis happens creep feed thecalf so mum can't access it.Don't forget to re-join thecow!Feeding: From previousrecords a feed should beselected and a possibleweight gain calculated. Usea small paddock for yourselected cow and calf pair.Put a maximum of 3 or 4four pairs in any paddockand make sure there is shadeand good quality water.Make sure that there isample space at the feedtrough for all and ifnecessary put in extras andremove wet and stale feeddaily.Put hay racks into to keep

the roughage hay off theground so it doesn'tbecome a cattle camp.Weaning: Steers should beyard weaned for at least aweek if possible in groups ofat least two. During thistime you should bewashing, leading, puttingon nose dogs and have theradio playing. At night timehave the lights turned on sothey get used to shadows.Start clipping and blowdrying in a frame to prepareyour steer for the big event.Show events: Given it hastaken up to 2 years to get toa big event make sure youare as ready as your steer.Design your promotionconcept with photo boardsand brochures for people totake home, promoting yourstud and cattle that youhave for sale. Its also a goodidea to have your agent'sdetails in the back as somepeople will only dealthrough an agent.

Now that you have doneyour best, hope for the best.

Written by Jenny Petrie,Orange NSW

Since early 2008, afterthirty years of city life (inBrisbane), we havegradually taken over themanagement of the familyfarm situated near OrangeNSW. This has been acomplete change inlifestyle and needless to saya very steep learning curve.

We certainly came toOrange with a feeling ofresponsibility for this smallplot of land with its richfamily history. Realisingwe are but short timecustodians our goal isfarming as sustainably aspossible.

The property, Javid, has

been held by members ofour family for 95 years andwas traditionally used tofatten lambs and growvegetables for the SydneyMarkets. Over time, withthe property being split andthe loss of shearingfacilities, fattening steersbecame the mainstay andthis is where we entered thepicture and becameinvolved in “farming”.

We loved farm life andenjoyed the cattle but wereless enthused with beingpowerless in the market.Buying in steers fromunknown backgrounds alsoproved challenging and on acouple of occasions we hadsteers collapse, due to stress,in the race and crush. This

was very difficult for allconcerned, particularly thecattle. We noted that thewilder the steers the less

weight (considerable) theygained compared to theirmore placid herd mates.Several Australian studies

performed on other breedsof cattle have concludedthat flightier temperaments= tougher meat. (Linda Café2009)Wayne encountered Steve

Moffat and his SquareMeaters display at the 2011Mudgee Small Farm FieldDays. He was immediatelyimpressed by the statedqualities of these cattle andset out to gatherinformation. Being a fastgrowing, well-muscled earlymaturing breed that couldbe finished on grass in less

than eighteen months was adefinite advantage for oursize farm. The quiettemperament of these cattlewas a huge selling point forus. On a road trip to Western

Australia, we visited KylieMcKinnon and MattBrown’s Mabelie Stud atNarromine. Kylie was verygenerous with her time andinformation,And we were quiteimpressed with the smallMabelie Herd.

We enjoyed our holiday

in the West and noted aSquare Meaters presence inthe southwest corner of thestate.

On returning home webecame aware of theMabelie dispersal sale and aswe were due to purchasemore steers we decidedinstead to buy cattle that wehad already met! And so theJavid Square Meaters Studwas founded. Our herdconsists of 6 Mabelie cows,4 heifers and Mabelie’sprincipal sire, BrinsleyZambezi plus two cowspurchased from theWoolaringa Square MeatersStud.

We also purchased 7commercial cows withcalves at foot from FionaBattiste at Woolaringa. We

are very interested inproducing quality animalsfor the prime domestic beefmarket and we feel that wehave a wonderful start onwhich to build. We could not be happier

with our decision so far.The cattle have exceededour expectations in everyway and we love workingwith these wonderfulanimals. We have alsojoined the NSW BreedersGroup and are lookingforward to an exciting andenjoyable future. For more information on

Kelkette Square MeatersStud is proud to have bredmany outstanding cowsand bulls which havecontributed to the qualitycattle seen today atKelkette Park.

I also acknowledge theother breeders who havecarefully selected qualitycows and bulls to take thebreed forward and also turnoff great steers as a result. The quality of the steers

produced by a stud is animportant indicator of thebreeding stock used toproduce them. This point isevident when steers win on

the hoof as well as on thehook at major carcasecompetitions.

An even biggerachievement comes whenyou produce steers whichcan not only win againstother steers of the samebreed but can win againststeers from many otherbreeds, both on the hoofand hook. This the ultimatein breeder satisfaction andachievement.Having experienced this

with a team of 3 steers atMelbourne Royal 2004, Ican recommend theexperience! Two out of the three steers

shown by Kelkette Studwere selected and took out

the coveted ‘BorthwickTrophy’ .You can find both qualityand experience at KelketteSquare Meaters Stud.

By Julie Gotz Sunset ParkSquare Meaters

Some lessons in life are bestlearnt the hard way. Myrecent experience cameabout when I accidentallywashed my farm diary withmy jeans (never been one tocheck pockets!!). Luckily Ihad entered my earliercalving dates and the mostrecent ones I couldremember with help of acalendar.

So, what are some of thethings one would be likelyto record? Calving andmating dates, dates sireswere re-entered back intoherd if you decide to batchcalve – useful for planningpaddocks come calving

time, chemical applicationof both livestock andpaddocks (particularlyuseful as most productshave withholding periods),mix rates of such chemicals, any sudden changes inweather (e.g. late or earlyfrost) paddock rotationdates and correspondingstock numbers, individualNLIS numbers of calves asthey calve ( have found thisto be invaluable especiallywhen all faces look thesame!!),calving intervals andlength of time mothering-asyou look over your herdsome calves may not presentas well as others, but pastrecords may tell you thatmum has had two calveswithin the one year!!

Why the need for anytype of record keeping?Well, in order to knowwhere you’re going, youneed to know where you’vebeen.Never place all your eggs

in one basket could well beapplied to storing valuableinformation, particularly ifyou need to refer back at alater date-after all some jobsdon’t get done every day andit is easy to forget the finerpoints. Personally I likehaving the ease andportability of having apocket diary in the backpocket of my jeans. Fromthere some things could bewritten on the calendar, butthe bulk is transferred to acomputer program i.e. aspread sheet, which is thenbacked up using an externalhard drive or disc.As well as accountability,

good record keeping canalso be useful forencouragement andmotivation. On a personallevel, I started my first batchof grain assist steers. Neverhaving done it before I wassomewhat daunted by theprocess and expense of theprocess involved. It wasn’tuntil I looked back over theweights that I realised that Iwas actually making

progress. Although I soldthem mid-way through thefeeding process I’m nowfired up ready to have a goat the next lot knowingfrom personal experiencewhat I can expect along theway.

Another managementand personal growth tool Ifind particularly useful isgoal setting. It sharpens myfocus and forces me step outof my comfort zone. Somedecisions can be hard tomake i.e. sale selection butas long as you keepoperating within themindset of continualimprovement that can, andover time will, make lifeeasier for you along the way.The important thing toalways remember is not totake yourself or yoursituation too seriously.Always make time to laugh.Of course you will makemistakes, who in lifehasn’t. I recently cameacross two quotes that Ireally liked;‘Success is not final, failureis not fatal, it is the courageto continue that counts.’Winston Churchill.‘Failure is simply theopportunity to begin againmore intelligently.’ HenryFord.

This information has been extracted from the rules and regulations of the Square Meaters Cattle Association of Australia Ltd, as detailed in the Articles of Association and Memorandum,as amended. The above information is provided as a guide only, and not the absolute definition of any aspect of the breed. Persons interested in the finite regulations of the breed mayobtain copies of the Memorandum and Articles of Association from the SMCA office by telephoning (02) 9834 4322 or writing to PO Box 371, St Marys, NSW 1790.

General:Square Meaters must be clean polled andof a single colour. Colour patches arepermitted around the udder/testes, but notelsewhere on the animal. The officialcolouring range is from Silver to Dark.Black is to be included on the herd book asB Grade.Automatically this excludes black bulls

from being registered and black femalesfrom being exhibited. Black steers areineligible to be shown. The following tableis an indication of the colouring:

Females:There are two classes for Square Meatersfemales, Class A & Class B. Females thatare between 100 and 110cm at 12 monthsof age can be registered as Class A. Outsidethis height criteria they may be registeredat Class B. While it is technicallyacceptable to register females under100cm, the SMCA strongly discouragesthis practice in order to preserve sizestandards.

Bulls:There is only one class for Square MeatersBulls, Class A. At 12 months of age bullsmust be between 103 and 113cm. Bullsmust be Mannosidosis tested and certifiedto be clear of this genetic defect. For bothmales and females, the measurement of theanimal must be taken at 12 months(plus/minus two weeks). The point ofmeasurement is the highest point on theshoulder. A witness to the measurement isrequired to sign the declaration form.

Semen:In order to sell semen, the donor bull mustbe approved by the board of directors andthe prescribed fee paid. With regard tolicenced semen the bull must pass all therelevant health protocols and be collectedin an approved AB centre. Unlicensedsemen (for example an on farm collection)may be used in Australia subject to certainconditions. Details can be obtained fromthe Office. In the case of shares in a bull

being sold, the shares give the shareholderrights to the semen. In this instance, on-farm collections are permitted. In everycase the Bull must be DNA tested.

Embryo Transfer:Donor females for Embryo transfer mustbe DNA typed and the prescribed feepaid. Calves born as a result of embryotransfer and/or artificial insemination, must have thedetails recorded against the calf ’s registeredname, ie. (ET) or (AI).

Multiple Birth:Calves born in multiple births must beindicated in the calves registered name, ie.(T) for twin. Female calves frommale/female twins should be tested toconfirm that they are not freemartins.

Commercial Appendix:Murray Grey females may be registered ona commercial appendix, for use withregistered Square Meaters bulls, to breed-up to pure Square Meaters by breedingthrough four generations. Stud 100 percent pure Murray Grey females can beentered onto the Commercial appendix F2females.

Stud Murray Grey Females:The herd book is currently open toregistered Murray Grey females in allcountries OTHER THAN AUSTRALIA.

For Show Purposes:Contact the Association for the showregulations

By Gary Sewell of OakvaleSquare Meaters.

As the size of most SquareMeaters breeder herds arerelatively small and onlyrequire one bull or theymay even just operate withan AI program, the marketfor Square Meaters Studbulls is not large amongstSquare Meaters Breeders. The thing to rememberthough, is that we are allbreeding seed stock for thebeef industry as a whole, not just for other SquareMeaters stud breeders.Breeders with SquareMeaters bulls that aresurplus to their ownrequirements need to thinkoutside the square as towhat benefits other breedsof cattle can gain fromusing Square Meaters asoutcross bulls forcommercial herds.

In our own breedingoperation we have beenselling Square Meaters bullsas outcross bulls tocommercial breeders for thepast seven years ranging inprice from $1,500 thru to$3,000 + GST.

These Square Meatersbulls have been used mainlyover Brahman cows, as weare situated just south ofMurgon Qld., which as yougo north, is basically thestarting point ofpredominately Bos-Indicusbreeds of cattle. TheseSquare Meaters bulls havegiven excellent results withmost Square Meaters crosscalves weighing between 30to 40 kgs heavier at weaningthan the straight Brahmanbreed calves and to thecommercial breeder that isan extra $60 to $80 perhead in the bank.We have also sold Square

Meaters bulls to breeders ofdairy cattle to use withmaiden heifers for ease ofcalving and to producegreat vealers, also to Dexterbreeders to increase size, muscle and length of theresultant calves makingthem more commerciallyviable, the list goes on.

At “Oakvale” our firstSquare Meaters X Limousincalves where born this yearI think this will be a goodcross as most of the feedercompetitions top 10’s areLimousin cross cattle. TheSquare Meaters will add therequired fat cover andmarbling to the carcase.

With small numbers ofSquare Meaters crosses nowappearing in drafts at ourlocal saleyards, the word isstarting to get around of thebenefits of using SquareMeaters as outcross bullsand we have enquiries forbulls from newcommercial breeders aswell as repeat orders fromexisting clients.

Now, a few points Iwould like you to consideron how you can achieve thesale of your surplus SquareMeaters bulls.

Firstly, these bulls aregoing to be sold tocommercial breeders whoneed to invest wisely intheir seed stock to improvetheir herds and also theirprofitability. So with this inmind, I must stress thesebulls need to be structurallysound and of good size andtype, good doers and to becommercially viable theyneed to be at least a framescore 3 but preferablyframe score 4 or 5.If your bull does not meet

this criteria, I would advisesending him to the localsaleyard as a cull. Whilesome breeders considerbulls used in commercialherds as culls, this is not the

case. Though you are notparading your cattle in thelocal show ring, in essenceyou are promoting yourcattle and the breed withthe progeny being displayedin the local saleyard and orbutchery. With word ofmouth being the best formof advertising for your bullsand your breed, if theanimal is inferior it could beyour worst. How do you attract theBuyers? The local sales yardis a good place to starttalking with your localcommercial breeders andauctioneers. The fine workbeing done by some SquareMeaters breeders across thecountry with great results incarcase competitions willalso attract the commercialbreeders interest. I dofeel a good animal will sellhimself, but you will needto think of how to advertiseyour bull for sale. By this Imean you’re not only sellingthe bull but also the benefits

of the breed and moreimportantly the advantagesthe commercial breeder willachieve with the purchase ofyour bull.1. Tender Yearling Beef (early maturing – quickreturns)2. Naturally Polled - in myopinion this is a greatselling point as it removesthe labour cost ofdehorning also removes theassociated stress to theanimal and minimisesbruising , especially in largecommercial herds.3. The quiet nature of theSquare Meaters breed whenused as an outcross oversome of the more highlystrung breeds (highlystrung animals don’t have asgood a weight gain as quietcattle) and ease of handling.4. Ease of calving -especially on largeproperties where animalsare not checked daily.5. Good conversion rates

(ratio of feed consumed toamount of weight gained).6. High yielding (liveweight to carcase weight)

I do understand thatstuds in different areas andstates will have differentbreeds of cattle that are predominant, to those which

we have in our area, but theprincipals of selling yoursurplus bulls will basicallyremain the same. Theprocess may not happenovernight but if you staywith it, offering qualitybulls for sale, you will seethe results.

By Kyla and Simon Palk,Willows Rest, SA.

What can I say? SquareMeaters - love them, lovethem, love them.Despite the fact that we

have been breeding for justa handful of years we feel wehave developed astructurally correct animalin both our females and ourbulls using AI as well as thebulls we have bred.Even though, as a breed,

we don’t use BreedPlan (weare not fans of it anyway) asa stud we weigh andmeasure all of our calves. They get weighed as soon aspossible after birth andmeasured at 4 specificpoints. We maintain theserecords as a way of keepingqualitative data andmeasuring the direction ourherd is going. We also usethis data to help us decidewhich bull to use overwhich female to hopefullygain the right result. Wemust be doing somethingright as our results at bothlocal country and RoyalShow level have proven.Keeping these records is

fairly easy to do as we onlyhave a small herd but ifasked we can tell the average

calf birth weight from aspecific bull or other traitshe is putting into our herd.As breeders, Simon and Ifeel that it is very importantto be able to providestatistics about all of ouranimals as this is good basicquality assurance. We alsoprovide a fertility guaranteeon all of our animals- if itdon’t work we replace it.

Throughout our spring2010 and autumn 2011show season and into thisyears’ Royal Adelaide Showwe have had consistentpraise and comments aboutthe structure and carcase ofour animals. We have foundthat if you start with goodsound structure in the firstplace it is easy to breed goodsound animals. We are at the point where

we are happy with thedirection our herd is takingbut at the same time we arenot complacent aboutimprovements. Our greatest achievements

to date are our Senior Bull,Willows Rest Achilles D2.Currently Reserve SeniorChampion British BreedBull 2010- Murray BridgeShow, Reserve SeniorChampion British BreedBull 2010- Mt Barker Show,

Royal Adelaide Show 2010-Senior and GrandChampion, Royal AdelaideShow 2011- Senior andGrand Champion.

At this years’ Royal heweighed 750kg, EMA134cm, P8 5mm/RF 4mm.The judge, Jack Woodburnfrom NSW, said he was oneof the most well muscledbulls he has ever seen andhis length was justincredible. He commentedthat he has exceptionallygood shoulders for ananimal his size that blendwell into his neck and thatwill allow for easy calving. He also commented aboutAchilles’ thickness frombehind his shoulder andthat he, despite his lengthand size, was still so freemoving.

The second of ourachievements is our juniorbull, Willows Rest AdonisF1. At the sweet age of8mths was ChampionBritish Bull and InterbreedChampion 2010- MurrayBridge Show. He then wenton the next year to becomeChampion British Bull2011- Mt Pleasant Show,Reserve Champion BritishBull 2011- Mt Barker Show, and then Junior ChampionBull 2011- Royal AdelaideShow.Jack Woodburn said that

this bull had “balancedperfection but lacked thematurity of the senior bull”.He weighed 560kg at19mth, EMA 96cm, P85mm/ RF 4mm.

Our females are alsoproving themselves out inthe paddock as well as in theshow ring.

Our junior female,Willows Rest U Can DanceF4, was a standout at thisyears’ Royal taking JuniorChampion Cow or Heifer atthe age of 15mth. Jack saidshe was a very well balancedheifer and he would like tosee her back next year with acalf. She also went to

Murray Bridge Show 2011where she was sashedChampion British BreedFemale and then was sashedReserve Interbreed Female. Then came our senior cow,Willows Rest Millies PrideE1. She went from JuniorChampion Cow or Heifer2010- Royal Adelaide Showto taking home Senior andGrand Champion Cow orHeifer 2011- RoyalAdelaide Show. The judgesaid she was the “finishedarticle”. “She is a 26mth oldcow with a 2 month old calfbehind her- that’s what youwant to achieve” was hisfinal comment beforecalling her forward over anolder cow and calf unit.

To put the icing on thecake we also took home theBreeders Group ribbon-which is probably the bestmarker for the directionyour herd is taking. Thehardest decision we had tomake was deciding whichanimals to put in the ring.We eventually went withAchilles, Millies Pride+Calf, and U Can Dance. The judge had troublefaulting any of our group. The highlight for us was

the steer we entered into theHoof and Hookcompetition. This is a trialand error process for us ashe was the first SquareMeaters steer to be shown inthis state. We had to use ourknowledge about feeding aswe had no outside guidanceat all. Despite this wemanaged a score of 75.5points which we feel is a faireffort. We now have a basisto work from and lookforward to giving it a bettercrack next year.

From all of our showresults we have come toconclude that you can’tscrimp on the structure ofyour animals in the firstplace and that the bestquality assurance we have isthe data we collect on ourcalves.

When taking animals to ashow you need to putyourself in their shoes.Even well travelled animalsget stressed travelling, sofor them it feels like theyhave jet lag or a really badcase of car sickness.

Arrival1. Before you begin the tripand also when you firstarrive give your animal“Travel and Yard” pellets or“Prime Mover” on hay -both are available fromElders. These both containelectrolytes and essentialvitamins and minerals andact like a ‘chill pill’.2. When you first get to the

show let your animal rest!Don’t drag them to thewash, just put them in theirbeds and leave them for atleast an hour. Use this timeto set up your gear. The bestway to get your animal todrink at a show is to leave ituntil they have settled andhave had their first feed anddry hay.3. Tie your animal up short(about 50cm from thehalter and neck rope to thering) This may seem mean, but is much safer and theywill settle better and notfight or get caught up withthe animals around them.4. Don’t change routine. Ifthey usually get fed at 5pmat home, then feed them at5pm when you are away. If

you arrive around lunchtime give them a biscuit ofhay, if near the evening feedtime wait until their normalfeed time. Don’t give wateruntil AFTER they haveeaten their first meal at theshow.

At the show1. Every morning take youranimals out of their bedsand give the beds a properclean out. Remove all thesoiled material, paying extraattention to the areas wherecattle urinate, and replacewith clean bedding. Cleanbeds will keep your cattlehealthy.2. Place each animals’ feedin their spot before you takethem back in. Tying themup short is essential here sothat they can’t get to eachothers feed. Watch overyour animals while they eatto ensure that each animalgets the right amount offeed. Do not leave feed infront of your animals while

they are unattended.3. Try not to fiddle withyour animals too much orthey will get sour. Blow thedirt out of their coat andkeep their beds clean.4. Avoiding sickness.Acidosis and dehydrationare the bad guys here.Nutrition and health are ofgreat importance at a show, following are some tips.Feed - Feed them exactlythe same grain mix orslightly less than you wouldat home and extra hay whilethey are at the show. At leasta biscuit of hay forbreakfast, lunch and dinner.Cereal hays are preferredover lucerne so as to avoidtravel tetany and othercomplications. Feed the hayafter the grain so that youensure they eat their usualamount of feed. Alwaysmake sure you have anappropriate pre-mix/bufferto avoid acidosis (grainpoisoning) as your animals

are more at risk of it at ashow. Monitoring theamount of feed and wateryour animal consumes eachmeal gives a goodindication of health andhappiness. If your animalgoes off their feed you willneed to slowly build themback up to the amount theywere eating previously.Never feed them double orextra in an attempt to catchup or if you feel sorry forthem at the show - it willmake them sick !

Water - Always wateryour animals after theirmeal, especially when theyfirst arrive at the show.WAIT until they havesettled and then feed andwater them at their usualfeed time. You need to havethem a bit parched whenthey first encounter newwater or they may turn uptheir nose. If you give themwater half an hour after afeed they are more likely todrink. How much water depends

on how hot it is. Usually 20- 40 litres after theirbreakfast, lunch and dinner. If it is hot , you could trythem with a bucket beforeyou go to bed. Do notgive them extra water inbetween as you may losetrack of how much or howlittle they have consumed.Always provide them withfresh water from the tap outof a bucket. Never let them

drink from a troughbecause of the disease risk.If you do encounterdifficulties getting youranimals to drink you couldtry molasses, red cordial ormilk shake aniseed in thewater to disguise the changein taste.5. It’s a good idea to keepinsects off your animals atthe show, particularly if youare from a different area asinsects (midges / flies) maytransfer diseases like 3 daysickness. Use a repellent butbe sure to avoid youranimals eyes.6. Signs that your animal issick and you may need tocontact a veterinarian.

Controlling nutritionaland managerial inputs inthe period prior, duringand following joining hasthe potential tosignificantly increase thenumber & timing of viable

progeny. Increasing thenumber of calves droppingto initial cycles opens theopportunity for bettercontrol of calving heifers aswell as increase marketingoptions for stronger linesof even calves from allbreeders.

The Period Prior toJoining: Controlling energybalance and mineral loadingof reproductive structures inthe period sixty days priorto joining is critical foroptimum joiningmanagement.Negative Energy Balance:In most cow/calfenterprises, the periodleading up to joining is theperiod of greatest negativeenergy balance. This is thetime where cows aremilking heavily and, in thecase of first calf heifers, theyare also attempting tocontinue to grow. As aresult, little extra energy forreproductive processes isavailable at a time when it iscritical.

This period also marksthe start of folliculardevelopment, which isultimately responsible fordevelopment and release ofa viable egg. It takes aboutsixty days for thedevelopment of the eggfrom a simple cell into anegg ready for release.

A complex cascade ofhormones, starting at thebase of the brain, is requiredto kick start, and maintainthe cycling process. Thesehormones and strongfollicular development relyon the availability ofadequate levels of energy.Failure to meet these extranutrient requirements canlead to failed or silent heats, and delayed returns toconception. The reality of

most grazing situations onemonth after calving is thatthere is very little extraenergy available to createstrong cycles and viableovarian structures. Often, the difference in glucoseavailability & uptake oftendictates the differencebetween a good strong cycleand a successful matingperiod.Creation of a PositiveEnergy Balance: Calvingcattle out in good bodycondition score (BCS) willhelp minimise excessiveenergy lost after calving. This means targeting a BCSof 3 at calving. It also helpscow/calf immunity levelsand aids milk production.Creating subtle changes of

available energy throughsupplementation will alsocreate sufficient positiveenergy balance to kick startthe hormonal process.Changes of as little as 20%of dietary energy(particularly starches) willallow the hormonal cascadeto be kick started. Inpractice, this meansmanipulating smallamounts of speciallydesigned supplementaryfeeds in the month or twoprior to the start of joining.Packing the “Lunch Box”:Once the egg is releasedfrom the ovary, it must havesufficient nutrients packedin its “lunch box” to providesufficient ongoing nutrientsavailable for a viablefertilisation and

implantation.These nutrients are

basically the only source ofnutrients available to theegg/embryo untilimplantation/attachment tothe uterine wall almost 45days later. Packing thelunch box (for the egg) withsufficient nutrients forfertilisation & implantationis vital for optimalconception rates.

These nutrients ensurestrong cellular repair anddevelopment duringfertilisation, cellularmultiplication in the embryoand during implantation.Nutrient loading of B-Carotene (Vitamin A), zinc, copper, and selenium arevital to facilitate viableembryo development.Practically the two can beprovided via injections orthrough specially designedpre-joining feeds.Managing Stress: Eventsreleasing stress hormonesare detrimental to theviability of reproductivestructures and reproductivehormones. These eventsinclude external stressors

like predators (includinghumans), weather and sub-optimal nutrition.Stress has the physiologicalimpact of decreasing theviability of ovarianstructures such as thecorpus luteum or yellowbody. This structureoversees fresh follicledevelopment and ensurescontinued release ofhormones required forembryo survival. Without astrong yellow body, embryosurvival diminishes with thevery real possibility ofdelayed returns to service(and a very spread calvingpattern).Stress events, however, are

not all bad. In fact, if we areable to time these stressevents appropriately, we canactually help to rid theovary of persistent orexisting yellow bodies.Removing these yellowbodies, particularly one ortwo cycles prior to joining, will help generate fresh, healthy eggs andsynchronise cycling totighten calving patterns.Fertilisation: Ensuring

ongoing nutrient supply forthe breeding cow’sreproductive hormones anddiminishing the risk ofstress are vital in producingthe highest chances ofconception.Similarly producing strongviable sperm from the bull’s

perspective is equally asimportant. Spermproduction begins, like thefemale, from simple cellsthat develop in the testicleto become viable spermover a sixty day period.Ensuring strong quality andquantity of sperm means

Healthy pastures makes for healthy cattle.

attention to the dietaryrequirements of adequateenergy availability, balancedprotein levels and nutrientslike vitamin A and zinc.Diminishing stress eventsduring period of spermdevelopment also increasesthe chances of high andtight conception rates.Structural and reproductivesoundness are also vital tofacilitate each bull’s abilityto cover as many cows aspractical. Checking thebull’s structure andsoundness includingreproductive organs, semenquality and serving abilitymay be part of this process.Check with your local vetabout theirrecommendations. Therecommended number ofcows normally for maturebulls tends to be around 40,although yearling bullsshould be exposed to less(eg 30). This will vary inintensive to extensivesituations and remember

don’t mix yearlings andolder bulls in the samepaddock!Implantation: Followingfertilisation there is a periodof approximately 45 dayswhere the embryo floatsdown the uterine passageand embeds (and reconnectsto the body’s nutrientsupply) into the soft uterinelining. The embryo isparticularly sensitive duringthis period with as many as50% of all embryosproduced failing to reachimplantation. In practice, all the grazier observes is anormal or a delayed returnto service and a spreadcalving pattern.

Ensuring stressors areminimised especiallycontrollable factors will helpmaximise implantationrates. This includes heatrelated stressors resultingfrom weather andinfections.Ensuring the uterine

bedding will receive an

embryo will also helpmaximise implantationrates. This includesensuring no infections aretransferred from bull tocow/heifer. Some of theseinfections like vibriosis andpestivirus will cause initialuterine inflammation andlater uterine wall scarring. Both of these infections canbe minimised bypreventative vaccines, sospeak to your local vet forfurther information.A stable plane of nutrition

also helps stabilise theuterine environment whichin turn increases thepercentage of successfulimplantations. Ensuring noexcessive levels of nitrogenin the diet will help embryosurvival. This excessnitrogen can be in the formof short green grass orexcessive levels of urea. Many joining programmeshave failed due to excessiveuncontrolled short greenpick or excessive

(uncontrolled) ureasupplementation, which aresituations that can be easilymanaged. Conclusion: Maximumcalving percentages andtight calving patterns can beachieved by good control ofnutritional & managementinputs in the 60 daysleading up to and 45 daysfollowing conception.Packing the lunch box fullof nutrients like glucose andminerals prior to eggrelease, kick startinghormones at least one cycleprior to joining, minimising& controlling stress, andmanaging a stable diet forup to 45 days afterfertilisation will helpachieve this control. The team behind this

By the Wade family,Christine, Hannah, Josephand Milly.

Silver Gully Estate hascontinued to consolidate itsmeat production businessin 2011. Our meat salescontinue to draw publicinterest due to oursustainable farmingpractices, local produce andhome grown operation.

We are supplementingour stud operation withmanaging a ‘Paddock toPlate’ operation – meat salesdirect to the public throughour local butcher.

Our management of themeat business fits in wellwith our off-farmcommitments, particularlygiven the fact that the kidsare growing up and havetheir own busy schedules! The process is simple. We

began collating a regularclient list, consisting mainlyof friends, family andcolleagues. Through wordof mouth the client listcontinued to increase toinclude friends of friendsand interested persons whowrote down their details atvarious agricultural showsand the local MangroveMountain Country Fair.We also have our ownwebsite and receive lots ofenquiries from the website. There is a link to ourwebsite from the SquareMeaters website as well.We send our steers to the

Kurri Kurri abattoir, whothen transports the meat toour chosen butcher, MixMeats at Ourimbah. Thebutcher hangs and cuts themeat until it is ready for

pick up by our clients. Eachclient usually takes theequivalent of ¼ of a carcass. We then forward theinvoices directly to ourclients for payment. Allcontact, includingnotification of meatavailability, pick upinformation and invoicingoccurs mainly by email, promoting efficiency andrecord keeping. Our clientlist continues to grow andwe often receive enquiries asto when the next batch willbe sent off! This year, we have been

able to send four steersevery three months in orderto placate demand for ourproduct.

In September, we sentseven steers to the butcherfinished on grass alone. While the steers dressed outat 46-48 percent (less thanthe >50 percent ideal) it wasimpressive that we achievedthis level of finish on wintergrass feed alone with nosupplemental feeding at all

We feel we are reallyhitting the mark when wecan dress out steers andsupply premium meatpackages to a discerningconsumer in Septemberfinished purely on grass. Itis satisfying to be able to“meat” the promises wehave made to buyers of ourstud stock, especially as weare achieving this on coastalgrass, imagine what ourbuyers out west can achieve. We sent four more steers inNovember who all dressedout at more than 51percent. This is the mainattraction of the SquareMeaters to the purchaser of

stud stock. – their ability tofinish on grass alonebetween 12 – 16 months ofage. We are achieving weights

consistently between 340-370 kg with carcase weightsof 174 -190 kg. Thisproduces a finished productof four (4) trays of meatweighing 25-30 kg, whichwe sell for $12/kg.We find that our clients

really focus on the fact thatthe meat is tender and homegrown in their preferencefor our meat. Australianconsumers don’t like heavilyfatty and marbled meat –they like tenderness.Regardless, our meat alwayshas a satisfactory fat contentaround the meat to protectit from freezer burn andthrough the meat to flavourit, without the need forgrain or other feeding. We have overwhelmingly

positive feedback from ourclients for our operation, with one little girl evenreturning to the ‘wild side’from being a vegetarian.Apparently she told hermother that she would eatthe meat only because sheknew the cows ‘had a happylife on the Wade’s farm’.Children in particular loveour meat, as it is soft anddoes not have anoverwhelmingly ‘meaty’taste. Many clients(including ourselves) havesaid they can no longer eatany other meat!

Our meat continues towalk off the farm.Increasing the diversity ofour operation improves thebottom line profit andkeeps the money coming in.Not only does it makecommercial sense but it alsosuits our off farmcommitments.

It is very rare to find a trulypasture fed bull, If you arepurchasing a show bullchances are it will be full ofgrain, just as most bullsoffered at multi-vendor andin-property sales will be.The best practice for bull

producers would be to weanbulls off the ration beforesale day but this may notalways be the case. Perhapsthe best approach for apurchaser is to find outfrom the vendor the types offeed the bull was on prior tosale. Armed with thisknowledge and recognizingthe impacts of stress onfermentation and appetite, reintroduce this feed stuff

quickly with plenty of hayafter sale and then slowlydecrease dependence on theration over the ensuingweeks.A check list of best practiceapproaches off the truckafter sale would be: Introduce hay and waterimmediatelyIntroduce stress relatedpreventative approaches e.g.ELMS Travel & Yard Pelletor Prime Mover liquid forthe two days immediatelypost arrival If the bull breeder hasnot weaned the bull off theration on sale day, introducethe original ration (buildingup over several days).Ensure the chemicalcompounds in the ration

actually do a decent job inmanaging pH (i.e. buffer).Don’t rely on what the feedcompanies say, have itchecked out with someonewho knows or simply addELMS Cattle Intensive at3% of the ration. Slowlydecrease the dependence onthis ration over 3 weeks, as

the alternate feed source isintroduced (e.g. paddockfeed) If the vendor has notalready done so, inject bullswith all the necessaryvitamins and vaccinesrequired. This wouldinclude Vitamin ADE(Vitamin A has a huge

impact on libido and spermviability), Vitamin B12, andclostridial and reproductivedisease vaccines (e.g.pestivirus, vibriosis andlepto/clostidial e.g. 7in1) Treat bulls for externaland internal (includingfluke and roundworm)parasites Perform a reproductivesoundness examination

(Note: Several of thetreatments or procedureslisted above may or may notbe completely necessary forsome bulls. The bestapproach would be to askthe opinion of a local cattleveterinarian familiar withyour herd)

How long do I need tograin feed my working bullsbefore joining for optimalperformance?

Ideally a preparationperiod of 2 months beforejoining is best practice. Theproduction of sperm from

juvenile stage to matureform will take this long, soplanning ahead can oftenmake the differencebetween good and badconception rates. It alsomeans paying attention tothe plane of nutrition(energy, protein, and fibre)and limiting exposure tounnecessary stress. Ifpasture availability islimited, then do nothesitate to commence asupplementation programin addition to the necessaryvitamins and vaccinesmentioned above.

A special case: Grainassist on green feedSome of the most powerfulresults from grain feedingcome when it is combinedwith green feed. Thecombination of green feedand grain assist (e.g.supplementing with 1 to 2kg/head/day of a grain suchas cracked barley or a starch

based pellet) improves feedconversion efficiency to alevel comparable to feeding5 times as much grain ormore on its own. Conclusion: Rather than

being considered a ‘taboo’,grain feeding in preparingbulls for joining is apowerful tool in aiding theachievement of maximum

individual and reproductiveperformance. Like allpower tools however, theperson using it should knowhow it works, and it shouldbe used as per theinstructions. In the righthands it can have stunning, beneficial results, and in thewrong ones leave a path ofdestruction.
