Transcript
  1. 1. Discovering Links Between Health and Hunger
  2. 2. WithinReach is an organization based in Seattle that is committed to connecting Washington families with essential health and nutritional resources. Outcome: To find or produce data that backs up links between health and hunger. Goal:
  3. 3. The Task: Obesity Diabetes Food Insecurity Breastfeeding Cost of Medical Care WIC & SNAP Enrollment Poverty Food Banks Insurance Coverage Food Deserts ACE's Free School Meals Medicaid Enrollment
  4. 4. Action Plan Read articles and find ideas on data to best fit the task Write reviews of articles relating to the objectives to find more data Mine the web for data Develop hypotheses for correlations Use statistical analysis (SPSS/ArcGIS) to create statistical support for the correlation Create maps symbolizing the single variables Create maps symbolizing the interesting correlated variables and show scatter plots
  5. 5. Most Critical & Interesting Steps Formatting Data Creation of Hypotheses
  6. 6. Correlations and Scripting
  7. 7. Correlations and Scripting
  8. 8. Limitations Data & Concepts: Abstract or Broad ACE's Food Insecurity Problems with scale; county level Statistics: No time to do individual analysis Research & Correlation: Correlation not causation Need time to find supporting studies
  9. 9. Results: SNAP Rate & Fully Breastfed Rate in Washington Counties This map compares the rate of the population on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to the rate of children who have been fully breastfed. There is an inverse relationship between these two variables.
  10. 10. Results: Obesity Rate & Fully Breastfed Rate in Washington Counties This map compares the rate of obesity in Washington State to the rate of children who have been fully breastfed. There is an inverse relationship between these two variables.
  11. 11. Results: Obesity Rate & Fully Breastfed Rate in Washington CountiesMedicaid Children Enrollment & Partially Breastfed Rate in Washington Counties Poverty Rate and Food Insecurity Rate in Washington Counties This map compares the rate of poverty to the rate of food insecurity. There is a direct relationship between these two variables.
  12. 12. Results: Obesity Rate & Fully Breastfed Rate in Washington CountiesMedicaid Children Enrollment & Partially Breastfed Rate in Washington CountiesDiabetes Mortality Rate & Fully Breastfed Rate in Washington Counties Poverty Rate and Health Insurance Enrollment in Washington Counties This map compares the rate of poverty in Washington State to the rate of health insurance enrollment. There is an inverse relationship between these two variables.
  13. 13. Recommendations: Continue search for supporting studies Collect data that is more up to date Find related variables or define what variables exist under broader terms Utilize online mapping platform to illustrate and deliver data Figure out the strength and reason for each correlation Overall, we feel comfortable passing our data and map package along to WithinReach as ready to use products.
