Welcome to Helensburgh Savoy’s production of The Wizard of Oz. I am sure many of you are familiar with MGM’s classic 1939 film starring Judy Garland and we hope our staging will transport you “over the rainbow” to the magical world of Oz so brilliantly captured on screen.

We are delighted to welcome both Frank Hotchkiss as Director and Pamela Frew as Musical Director. Frank and Pamela have worked together previously and their wealth of experience has proved invaluable in tackling such an ambitious show. Euan Forrest brings his considerable backstage knowledge and skills to the role of Stage Manager and Charlotte Newell’s creative talents are again on display as our Wardrobe Mistress.

As well as several familiar faces, it has been a great pleasure to welcome so many new members to the Club this year. In particular, we have a large cast of very enthusiastic Munchkins and we are sure you will appreciate their talent and commitment.

Everything you see tonight would not be possible without the hard work of all the unseen “stars” who willingly give of their time and talents to provide the show with scenery, costumes, lighting, sound, make-up, etc. We are also grateful to our Patrons and Sponsors for their unfailing support, and also to Our Town Lotto and the Sylvia Aitken Charitable Trust for financial assistance.

Our chosen charity for this season is Helensburgh Stroke Club and we will be staging our usual fundraising concert “Sing For Your Supper” for them here in the Victoria Halls on Friday, 3rd February, 2012. Please pay a visit to our bar during the interval or after the performance and we hope you enjoy the triumphs and tribulations awaiting Dorothy, Tinman, Lion and Scarecrow as they journey along the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City.

Although this is Frank’s first time working with the Savoy, he has a wealth of experience with a number of other groups. Frank was the director of Clydebank Musical Society for fourteen years and also directed their Junior section on occasions. He has previously taken the helm at Stagelights in Dumbarton, where he has worked with Pamela, our musical director. Frank has also appeared on stage in a number of roles, most recently in a production of the Madness musical, “Our House”. Frank is a playwright, having written several pieces, including “Century”, “A Perfect Match”, and “Friday Girls”; with the last two being performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Away from the theatre, Frank has recently taken up a new post as the Depute Head teacher of Irvine Royal Academy. He lives in Clydebank with wife, Lynne and son Keir where he supports the Bankies (someone has to).

Frank has directed both the “Wizard of Oz” and ”The Wiz” before, but says that this cast is, “The most enjoyable I’ve worked with in these roles. They have taken to the characters and made the rehearsals great fun to be a part of. I’m sure they will entertain the audiences this week. It has been a pleasure to work with every one of them.”

Frank Hotchkiss

Pamela FrewPamela graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 1994 with a 1st class honours degree in Music Education and has taught in a number of schools since then, prior to taking up appointment as Principal Teacher of Music at Hermitage Academy in April 2010. She also undertook a year of post graduate study in orchestral conducting thereafter. She has been musical director for over 30 productions since 1995, both in the schools she has taught in and with Stagelights Theatre Company Dumbarton.

These musicals have included a wide range of musical theatre styles including Carousel, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Chess, We Will Rock You, Our House and Les Miserables. Pamela has also worked with other local groups including Stewarts School of Dance and has been involved in concerts to raise funds for a number of good causes including CHAS. She has worked with Savoy since the start of this year and thoroughly enjoyed preparations for their annual Sing for Your Supper and Spring Concert events.

The wizard of Oz - synopsisAct OneYoung Dorothy Gale lives on a farm in Kansas with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry and little dog Toto. Feeling unappreciated, she dreams of a far away place,”Over the Rainbow”. Miss Gulch, their unpleasant neighbour, serves Dorothy with a summons to take Toto away so Dorothy runs away from home with her dog. On the road, they find the showman, Professor Marvel, who urges her to return to the farm. Dorthy arrives home, just as a tornado touches down. The house is carried by the tornado to the Land of Oz where Dorothy is met by the Munchkins and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (who resembles Aunt Em). Her house has fallen upon, and killed, the Wicked Witch of the East. This frees the Munchkins from the witch’s power, and they treat Dorothy as their heroine. The Wicked Witch of the West (who resembles Miss Gulch) arrives to claim her sister’s magic ruby slippers and vows to avenge her sister’s death. Dorothy wants to go home to Kansas and the Munchkins tell her that the wonderful the Wizard of Oz will know what to do. Dorothy starts off towards the Emerald City.On the way Dorothy and Toto meet three strange traveling companions, each of whom needs help: The Scarecrow’s head is full of stuffing; the rusty Tin Man’s chest is empty; and the Cowardly Lion is afraid of his own tail. Dorothy invites them all to join her to see if the Wizard can help them. The Wicked Witch of the West threatens Dorothy, Toto and her new companions along the way but fails to intimidate Dorothy into giving up the ruby slippers. Act TwoThe Emerald City’s Gatekeeper tries to discourage the adventurers and at first the Wizard refuses to meet them. Finally taken to see the fearsome Wizard, the four friends are given a quest to prove themselves worthy of the Wizard’s assistance: they must bring him the broomstick of the Wicked Witch of the West. The friends leave in fear and haste for the land of the Winkies (whom the Wicked Witch has enslaved and forced to serve in her army). They have to pass through a haunted forest, where the Jitterbugs live. The Wicked Witch’s flying monkeys then attack, but the witch still does not have the power to take the ruby slippers from Dorothy’s feet . The Wicked Witch attacks the Scarecrow with fire, and Dorothy throws a bucket of water at him, accidentally dousing the Wicked Witch. When the friends arrive back at Oz, The Wizard is again reluctant to meet them but is then revealed as an ordinary man (who resembles Professor Marvel). Nevertheless, the Wizard is able to help the adventurers and he offers to give Dorothy a ride back to Kansas in a hot-air balloon. The balloon takes off while Dorothy is distracted, and she is afraid that she missed her chance to go home, but Glinda arrives. She says that Dorothy has the power to transport herself and Toto by clicking her heels together three times and repeating “there’s no place like home”. But will it really work?6

Helensburgh Stroke ClubAffiliated to Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland

SC 018761

Thank you very much to the Helensburgh Savoy for supporting the Helensburgh Stroke Club as their charity this year.

The Helensburgh Stroke Club was started in 1992 and is open to anyone with a history of stroke, chest or heart disease. We meet on Thursdays between 10 and 12 noon at St. Joseph’s Lower Hall, Grant Street, Helensburgh.

Each meeting begins with an opportunity for conversation over refreshments followed by one of a variety of activities. These include board games and quizzes, a wide range of stimulating talks, music and singing, arts and crafts, music to movement. We are very grateful to all our guest contributors who make this programme of events possible. We also have regular outings which give a pleasurable day out for all who take part. Transport suitable for disabled people is provided, along with the willing help and support of volunteers, which enables some to participate who wouldn’t be able to travel far otherwise.

The Club is a very friendly, informal and supportive group and provides a weekly place where people can come and interact with others, some of whom may not be able to get out and socialise otherwise.

We would welcome any new members, either because they have had a stroke, chest or heart disease, or because they would be interested in being a volunteer helper.

The evening has a variety of turns – song, dance, drama and instrumental playing in a wide variety of styles – and a supper is provided. No YOU don’t have to sing to get it! Only the performers have to do that. The event is always great fun with something to suit all tastes and it is a great showcase for the town’s performing clubs. Tickets in due course from HOPSCOTCH and club members. We would like to thank all those organisations who have continued to support this event over the past years and make it such a success.

Our historyHelensburgh Savoy appreciates your support and in return supports local charities. This is our twenty ninth stage production and over the years we have donated over £28,000 directly to local organisations and charities and have enabled them to raise more via participation in their fund-raising. Making a surplus from this sort of activity is no easy matter and we are proud of our record in that respect and very appreciative of the support we receive from the public and local businesses.

You Don’t have to sing to be a part of Helensburgh SavoyAlthough singing is obviously a main part of a Savoy production, many other talents are needed. Costume sewing, set building, scenery painting, make-up, props (organising and making), stage management, prompting, fund-raising and Front-of-House are all vital and enjoyable parts of what, at first glance, appears to be a purely musical activity. Perhaps you would like to take part in our concerts, but do not want to act in a show, whatever your interest we would like to hear from you. Please contact the secretary, Pauline Forrest on (01436) 671341 or go to our website www.helensburghsavoy.org.uk to find out more.
