As noted in past communications, as you review your childs scores, keep in mind that last year was our first year of taking the PARCC test, in which case, its natural to have a lower performance on the tests. In the coming months, MCPS will be hosting a number of Parent Information sessions around the County for parents to gain a deeper understanding of what their childs scores mean. As a staff we will use these data to help inform and align our work in teaching and learning. Planning for the 2016-2017 is just around the corner! As you may have heard, Mr. Bowers have recently proposed a $2.4 Billion recommended operating budget to fund our childrens educational need for the 2016-2017. Please be sure to read in detail his proposal (see info on page two) and I ask you to join me in the advocacy work at the local and state level for our policy makers to Fund Our Future! Upcoming Assessments: When we return in January, students in grades K-5 will be taking the MAP-Math, MAP- P, and Math-R individualized computer assessments and students in grades K-2 will be taking the mClass (reading benchmark test) assessments. Soccer Safety: In an effort to minimize head injuries, we will be discouraging students from heading the ball when they play soccer during recess. If you have a young soccer player, please talk with your child and remind them to not head the ball. Getting To Know Sean Randall-Jones: Howdy, Woodlin Family and Friends. I want to say that I am so happy to be a member of the Woodlin family and in particular the 4th grade team. This is my 6th year of teaching. I have taught 4th grade previously-- for 3 years in Talbot County at Chapel District Ele- mentary School, where I grew up. In 2013, I joined the MCPS team and taught 5th grade for 2 years at Greencastle Elementary School. After two years there, I transferred to Woodlin Elemen- tary and joined the 4th grade team with Mrs. Keller, Miss Barrish, and Miss Roseman. I feel at home at Woodlin with all the support and help that I have received from the parents, staff and stu- dents. I love working with students and want them to learn, but to also have fun at the same time. Victoria Veirs: I live and grew up in Montgomery County. I have 3 siblings, an identical twin sister, an older sister and brother. My sister and mother both work for MCPS. I went to Frostburg State University. I graduated in May 2015 with my undergrad in Early Childhood/Elementary Educa- tion. During my time at Frostburg, I played on the varsity volleyball team for 3 years. I am a die-hard Washington Redskins fan. My family has owned season tickets for the past 12 years. During the sum- mers I love going to the beach to relax and hang out with my family. Operating Budget (English and Spanish)

The FY 2017 Operating Budget—A Call to Fund Our Future

Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers submitted a $2.4 billion recommended operating budget for Fiscal Year 2017 to the Board of Education on December 8. Mr. Bowers’ operating budget recommendation includes investments to improve student literacy and math skills; build the cultural proficiency of staff; foster stronger partnerships with the community and our families to support stu-dents; and better organize the district to ensure every student is prepared for college and careers.

There are a variety of ways that you can learn more about the MCPS budget and become involved in the budget process this year, including the new Budget 101 website; Neighbor to Neighbor small-group discussions; Parent Academy workshops; and an over-view of the budget and other documents available on the MCPS budget webpage. Visit the budget webpage at www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/budget/ to read more about these resources and how to make your voice heard.

Don’t miss the chance to share your ideas and views on the proposed budget at two upcoming public hearings: the first is Thurs-day, January 7; the second is Thursday, January 14. Both hearings will be held at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Carver Education-al Services Center. Starting December 14 at 9:00 a.m., individuals may call the Board of Education office at 301-279-3617 to sign up to testify at the public hearings.

2016-2017 School Year Calendar

Making Good Choices

Wizards desired behaviors, such as making good choices, are taught to stu-dents and discussed during morning meetings and are expected and mod-

eled for students continually throughout the week. Students are taught that making good decisions will have positive and personally rewarding results.

During the winter break, take time to teach, discuss, and model the importance of making choices with your child.

Here are some process steps for making good choices:

1. Stop and Think

2. Ask yourself, “What will happen if I...”

3. If it will result in a good outcome, do it.

4. If it will result in a bad, unsafe, or disrespectful outcome, think of another choice.

5. When in doubt, best not to do it. Ask for help from mom/dad/teacher…
