OCTOBER 07, 2018 TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A VIEW FROM THE PEW
Thoughts on the Readings for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Our Gospel this weekend comes in two sections. In the first half of this Gospel
Jesus talks about the difficult issue of divorce. The occasion for Jesus’ teaching
was a question by the Pharisees: “Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his
wife?” Jesus responded to their question by asking them what Moses had
taught. They replied correctly that Moses had permitted divorce, but Jesus told them that it was
“Because of the hardness of your hearts” that Moses did this. Jesus then went on to remind them that
when God has joined two people together this union is blessed and sanctified by God and “what God has
joined together no human being must separate.” In the second half of this Gospel, we are told that people
were bringing their children to Jesus to have him touch them. When his disciples rebuked them, Jesus
told them: “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as
these.”
The theme from the first half of the Gospel is echoed in our first reading today which tells the story of the
creation of man and woman. The importance of pets notwithstanding, this story reminds us that the
“suitable partner” for a human being is another human being.
In both the Gospel and the first reading it is important to point out what is not being said. Jesus did not
say that it was okay to criticize or judge those who go through the painful experience of divorce. Jesus did
not say that people should stay in abusive relationships. Rather, he spoke about the dignity, goodness
and blessedness of the union of those whom God has joined together.

Bishop Robert Barron’s Newest Study Program
Walk through the Liturgy with Bishop Barron and
you’ll be transformed through insights on this most
privileged and intimate encounter with our Lord Jesus
Christ.
See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and
into the heavenly realm, how it resonates with a call
from God and a response from His people, the Church,
and, most importantly, how we are intimately joined
with the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus
through the Holy Eucharist.
The Mass will help you understand how to fully,
consciously, and actively participate in the source and
summit of the Christian Life.

SCHOOL NEWS
Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center
MONTESSORI CURRICULUM NIGHT Wednesday, October 17, 2018, 6:00 PM at the ELC
Montessori is a uniquely innovative, child-centered approach to education, developed by Maria
Montessori, an Italian physician, educator and innovator, acclaimed for her educational method that
builds on the way children naturally learn. It is also an individualized approach to teaching and
learning that foster a child’s natural inclination to learn. Montessori teachers guide and instruct,
linking each student with activities that meet his/her interests, needs, and developmental level, while
challenging them to explore and learn. The Montessori classroom is designed to allow movement and
collaboration, as it also promotes concentration and a sense of order.
Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center “Montessori Curriculum Night” is an annual parent
informational workshop that is presented by ELC teachers. The purpose of the informational work-
shop is to provide parents and guardians with useful and informative information as to how
the Montessori Curriculum (Religion, Math, Language, Sensorial, Practical Life, Sensorial, Cosmic,
etc.) is implemented at Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center from Preschool to Kindergarten.
Parishioners/guests are also welcomed to attend the workshop presentation by calling our ELC office
for reservations at 808-734-3840 by October 12, 2018. School tours are also conducted weekly on
Tuesday and Thursday, at 9:00 AM. and are approximately 30-40 minutes.
For more information regarding the Montessori Curriculum or ELC school tours, please call our
office at 808-734-3840.
