Chamber Music: at City CenterImpressionsby Nana Ortiz de Castatto

After having tven immersed in spiritual retreat, inhaling

the airs of holiness during the final three days of the Passion

feel exhausted, depleted, enervated. Suddenly the phone

rings...it was my friend Myrna Pagan inviting me tn attend

a concert of Chamber Music at the City Center. I accepted

and we arrNed on time on Easter Sunday, the Day of

Resurrection. The Chamber Orchestra is comprised of 5 professional

musicians with extensive studies in Zmich, ,,,ce, Italy and

he United States, there are 11 young men .:n. iadies. The

Orchestra was directed by the young Hcru-y Hutchinson

Negron, the worthy scion o Howy Hutchinson Sr., cele-

brated violinist we listened to so often in the past releasing

melodies from his violin, which rang in our earslike the echo

of crystalline cascades of water flowing down into the river

rapids. The Chamber Orchestra is composed enti=dy of

suings: violins, guitars, violas, cellos and basses.

This concert delighted listeners with music by Puerto

Rican composers bringing to life the creative labor of this

unforgettable artists of yesterday, today and forever. The

music ofthose violins, basses and violas in thecapablehands

ofthese musicians as they executed the passage from danzas

to dance music was nothing less than d;amlike.found myseff transported back 63 years in time and

space when we used to dance in the Salon of City Hall or at

some private home. remembered that promenade on the

ann of my escort and the flirtatiousness with which we

handled our Spanish fans, knowing we were being admired

by some handsome young man.

That afternoon of the 31st of March is still latent in my

memory. With masterful movements of their bows those

musicians made their violins vibrate with their interpreta-

tions ofthe compositions ofRafael Herndez, ourjibarito,Mom’ozeau, Morel Cunpos and Ernesto Cordero. IVlany

people profess apathy toward chamber music because they

conflse it with opera that may be difficult to understand and

did not attend this beautiful connert which was presented

free of charge.I wish 0a make it clear that the primordial objective of

these musicians is to present our Puerto Rican folklore in all

quarters of Puecto Rico and adjacent islands. Anyone who

missed this chamber music lostout on apricelessexperiencefrom which we all emerged spkitually rejuvenated and filled

with the pride of our cultlral entity It goes without saying

that the orchestra received the gratitude of the people as

everyone preseut at this cultural act rose. to their feet in a

standing owtiou which was appreciated and gentecly rycip-

roculed with a dan;a by’ Simon Madera tbr an encore. We

wish these young nnlsicians greal success, may they con-

tinue to perforrn with such characteristic professionalism.

Old Spanish Lighthouseto :::Become Seaport Museum

The Municipality of Vieques has acquired rights to Punta Mulaslighthouse at Isabel II harbor and will use Federal funds to restorethe historic monument as a maritime museum.

The light itself is actually in use by the U.S. Coast (by remotecontrol) as the principal aid to navigation on Vieques’s 21-milenorth coast. The building however had been in disuse for yearswhen Mayor Manuela Santiago, aided in part by a grant from theVieques Historical Trust, launched a clean-up progam.

Final restoration plans would include park grounds and confer-ence salons, photo: Stacy Notine

NO "Wild Horses" HereThough you’re bound to see horses roaming the

roadsides they are not wild, just loose for grazing. So don’t attempt to rope a mustang for your camp-site corral an irate owner will soon show up.

Horsebreeding, both of cow ponies and PasoFinos is an art in Vieques where shows and com-petitions are held periodically and a prize PasoFino may bring in upwards of $30,000 on theinternational market.

Cock Fightsare held on weekends during the winter months. They’re open to the public but betting is head tohead, not at a ticket window, and often consum-mated by hand signals. So get guidance before-hand. The locals know each other and have nodoubt whether that raised palm meant five bucksor five hundred bucks. Let the bettor beware; it’sdefinitely a macho trip.

"Did you hear the monkey last night?""That was no monkey, that was my yaboa."Back in the lagoon, over the ululating hubble-
