Getting Started

PlugtheA/CadapterintoanA/CpowersourceandplugtheconnectorintothebackoftheEthernetConverter.Itwilltakeabout30secondstobootup.

ScrewtheantennaintothetoporsideofyourWirelessEthernetConverterasshown.Youmayalsoattachtheoptionalstandifyouwish.Forbestperformance,orienttheantennatopointstraightup.Ifyouwanttosubstituteadifferent2.4GHzantenna,makesurethatithasthecorrectRP-SMAconnector.

IfyourWirelessRouter/AccessPointsupportsAOSS,thenAOSScanconfigureyourwirelessnetworkforyou.ToconfigureyournetworkwithAOSS:

•ConfirmthattheWirelessRouter/AccessPointandtheEthernetConverterarebothpoweredup.•HoldintheAOSSbuttonontheWirelessRouter/AccessPointfor3seconds.•HoldintheAOSSbuttonontheEthernetConverterfor3seconds.

AOSSwilltakeaboutaminutetoconfigureyourwirelessnetwork.Whenfinished,theAOSSLEDsonboththeWirelessRouter/AccessPointandtheEthernetConverterwillstopblinkingandstaylit.Younowhaveasecureconnection!

NOTES: IfAOSSisused,thenanynon-AOSSwirelessclientdevicesinyournetworkwillhavetobemanuallyre-configuredtoconnecttotheRouter/AccessPointinAOSSmode;pleaseconsultyourRouter/AccessPointdocumentationformoreinformationonaddingnon-AOSSdevices.

AOSSconfiguresyourSSID,encryptiontype,wirelesschannel,andencryptionkey,andmakesasecureconnectionbetweenyourwirelesscomponents.Youmaystillneedtorunyourrouter'sconfigurationutilitytoconfigureyourinternetconnection.

IfAOSSdoesnotfinishproperly,powercycleboththeRouter/AccessPointandtheEthernetConverterandattempttheAOSSprocessagain.AOSSworksbestwhentherouterandtheEthernetConverterarephysicallyclose.Youcanalwaysmovethemfurtherapartwhenconfigurationiscomplete.

Ifyourwirelessrouter/accesspointdoesn'tsupportAOSS,you'llneedtoconfiguretheaccesspointmanually.Therearetwowaystodothis:youcanusetheEthernetConverterManagersoftwareifyouhaveaWindowsPConthenetwork(98/ME/2000/XPonly),oryoumayuseawebbrowser.Webbrowserconfigurationmaybedonewithanycomputerrunningarecentwebbrowser,includingMacintoshandLinuxmachines.Skipto page 11forwebbasedconfiguration.

Manual Configuration

IfyouhaveaWindows98/ME/2000/XPmachinewithaCD-ROMdriveavailableonyourcomputernetwork,theEthernetConverterManagermakesitsimpletoconfiguretheEthernetConverter.ThefollowingstepswillguideyouthroughconfiguringtheEthernetConverter via the Ethernet Converter Manager.

ConnectoneoftheEthernetConverter'sLANportstoanopenportonyournetwork'srouter,switchorhubwiththeincludednetworkpatchcable.Iftherearenoportsavailable, you can temporarily remove a computer or other connected device and plug the Ethernet Converter to that port. You can plug the Ethernet Converter directly to the configuringcomputer,butwillhavetoconfiguresettingsmanuallyasdescribedonpage 17.

Oncethenetworkcablehasbeenpluggedin,plugtheEthernetConverter'sACAdapterintoanavailablepoweroutlet.ThenattachthepowerconnectortothebackoftheEthernetConverter.Thebootupprocesstakes30secondsandiscompletewhenboththeWirelessandEthernetLEDsarelit.

ReturntothePCdesignatedforconfigurationandinserttheincludedEthernetConverterCD-ROMintothePC'sCD-ROMdrive.

TheEthernetConverterUtilityshouldlaunchautomatically.Ifitdoesnot,browseyourCD-ROMdriveinWindowsandrunthesetup.exe program.

Configuration with Ethernet Converter Manager

ClickonEthernet Converter Manager.

TheEthernetConverterManagersoftwarewillrun. If the search doesn't begin automatically, select the Search for an Ethernet Converter option from the Editdropdownmenu.

TheEthernetConverterManagerwillsearchforallBuffaloEthernetConvertersonyournetwork.Theprocessusuallytakeslessthanoneminute.Oncecompleted, the Search Resultswindowwillappear.

Search ResultswilllistallBuffaloEthernetConvertersonthenetwork.IfthereismorethanoneEthernetConverterinthelist,selecttheoneyouwouldliketoconfigure.PresstheIP Settings button to continue configuration.

The IP Address Setupwindowwillopen.ChecktheboxnexttoUse DHCP and press the OK button. The EthernetConverterwillreboot;thisprocessmaytakeas long as a minute. The Ethernet Converter Manager willthenre-scanthenetworkforEthernetConverters.

NOTE: IfyouwanttogiveyourEthernetConverterastaticIPaddress,thanyoucanskipcheckingUse DHCPandenteryourownIPAddressandSubnetmaskinthecoorespondingfields.IfusingastaticIPaddress,itisrecommendedtopickoneinsideyourexistingnetwork'ssubnet.

Search Resultswillappearagain.IfmorethanoneEthernet Converter is present, select the proper Ethernet Converter from the list. Then press the Configure button.

TheEthernetConverterManagerwillconnectyoutotheEthernetConverter'swebbasedconfigurationtool.Youwillbepromptedforausernameandpassword.

By default, the username is root and there is no password.

After entering the user name, press the OK button. Pleaseskiptopage 13tocontinueconfiguration.

YoumayalsoentertheWeb-basedConfigurationToolwithoutusingthesoftware.ThismaybenecessarytoconfiguretheconverterwithouttheuseofaWindowsPC.UsethismethodwithLinux,Macintosh,otherothernon-WindowsPCstoaccesstheWeb-basedConfigurationTool.

RefertoyouroperatingsystemdocumentationonhowtoconfigureaStaticIPaddress.TheEthernetConverterhasanIPaddressof1.1.1.1bydefault.You'llneedtoconfigurethecomputertobeonthesamesubnet;anIPaddressof1.1.1.2isrecommendedforthecomputer.

Withtheincludednetworkpatchcable,connectoneoftheEthernetConverter'sLANportstoanopenEthernetportonarouter,switch,orhubonyournetwork.Alternately,youcanplugtheEthernetConverterdirectlytotheconfiguringcomputer'sEthernetport.

Oncethenetworkcablehasbeenpluggedin,plugtheEthernetConverter'sACAdapterintoanavailablepoweroutlet.ThenattachthepowerconnectortothebackoftheEthernetConverter.Thebootprocesstakeslessthanaminuteandiscompletedwhenboth the Wireless and Ethernet lights are lit.

Configuration without PC Software

OnceyourcomputerhasaStaticIPaddressof1.1.1.2,openyourwebbrowserandenter1.1.1.1 by typing it intotheAddressfieldandthenpressingEnter on your keyboard.

Youwillbepromptedforausernameandpassword.By default, the username is root and there is no password. After entering the user name, press the OK button.

TheWebBasedConfigurationToolletsyouchangetheEthernetConverter'sconfiguration.ThroughWebBasedConfiguration,youcanchangethewirelessnetworktheEthernetConverterisassociatedwith,theIPaddressoftheEthernet Converter, and other important settings.

Afterlogginginonthepreviouspages,youwillbegreetedbythemainconfigurationpage.ThispagequicklyshowsyouwhatnetworktheEthernetConverterisconnectedtoaswellasallowingyoutosearchforavailablenetworks.

ThefirststepinWebBasedConfigurationshouldbetosearchforanavailablewirelessnetwork.To do this, press the Search button in the SSID (Network Name) table.

After pressing the Search button, the Search for SSIDprogramwillfindanynetworksinyourareathat are broadcasting their SSIDs. Select the wirelessnetworkthatyouwouldliketoconnecttoand press the Select button.

Afterselectingawirelessnetwork,youwillbereturnedtothemainWebBasedConfigurationpage.

IfthewirelessnetworkyouareattemptingtoconnecttoisnotbroadcastingitsSSID,thenyouwillberequiredtomanuallyentertheSSIDintotheSSIDfield.AfterthefieldispopulatedwiththeproperSSID,presstheApply Settings button.

Ifencryptionisenabledonthewirelessnetworkyou'veselected,youwillneedtoentertheencryptionkey(seepage 15).

ClickRefresh to see the current status of your wirelessconnection.SSID (Network Name)willbepopulatednow(seepages 13-14ifitisn't).

Belowit,Wireless Network Type may be set to Infrastructure if you're connecting the Wireless Ethernet Converter to a router or access point, or Ad hocifyou'reconnectingittoanotherwirelessclient.

Encryption Mode should be set to use the same type ofencryptionastheotherwirelessdevicesonyournetwork.TheEthernetConvertersupportsWEP128,WEP64,TKIP,andAESencryption.AESishighlyrecommendedifallyourotherwirelessdevicessupport it.

Totherightoftheencryptiondropboxisthefieldwhereyouenteryourencryption key.

SSID, Encryption Mode, and Encryption Keymustbesetexactlythesameinallofyourwirelessdevices,ortheywillnotbeabletocommunicatewitheachother.

Checkyourrouter/accesspoint'sdocumentationifyoudon'tknowwhattheSSID,EncryptionMode,andEncryptionkeyareonyournetwork.

Onceyou'veconfiguredthesebasicsettings(especiallySSID, the Encryption Mode, and the Encryption Key),theEthernetConvertershouldbeabletoconnecttoyourotherwirelessdevices.Tocontinueconfiguringadvancedsettings,pleaseskiptothenextpage.

DisconnecttheEthernetConverterfromthewirednetworkconnectionandmoveittoitsdesired location.

YoumayconnectfourwiredEthernetdevicestotheEthernetConverter'sLANports.ConnecteddevicesmayincludeXBoxes,PS2s,HomeTheaterequipment,switches,hubs,oranothercomputersystem.PlugtheACAdapterintoanearbypoweroutletandconnectittotheEthernetConverter.PowercycleanydevicesthatareconnectedtotheEthernet Converter.

IfyousetastaticIPaddressonyourcomputeronpage 11, then restore the computer's IPsettingstoobtain an IP Address automatically.

Congratulations!YourEthernetConverterissetup.IfyouneedtoconfigureyourEthernet Converter further, use the Ethernet Converter Search Utility and press the Configure button (page 8).TurntothenextpageforAdvanced Settings.

MostuserswillneverneedtochangeanysettingsfortheirWireless Ethernet Converter besides the basic ones in the mainconfigurationwindow,coveredonpages 13-15. If you'reoneoftheexceptions,youmayaccessAdvanced Settings by pressing the blue Advanced button in the bottom rightcorneroftheconfigurationpage.

This is the Advanced Settings page. On the left, you maychoosefromWirelessSettings,NetworkSettings,orManagement.Whenthepagefirstopens,it'satWirelessSettings. Changes on the Advanced Settings page are not applied until the Set button is pressed.

MAC Address - By default, the Ethernet Converter transmits itsownMACaddress,butyoumaychangethissothatittransmitstheMACaddressofthefirstdevicepluggedintoittotransmitadatapacket.

SSID-IntheSSIDfield,entertheSSIDnameofthewirelessnetworkthattheEthernetConverteristoconnectwith.UsethesameSSIDasyourrouter/accesspoint.Youmayfindavailable broadcasting SSIDs by pressing the Search button.

Wireless Network Type-ChoosebetweenInfrastructure (AccessPointBased)orAd-hoc(ClienttoClient).

Wireless Channel-ThechannelwillbeautomaticallyselectedinInfrastructurenetworks.ForAd-hocnetworks,bothclientsmustbesettothesamechannel.

Wireless Mode-ThewirelessmodeonlyappliestoAd-hocconnections.IftheEthernetConverterismakinganAd-hocconnectionwithan802.11bclient,thenselect802.11b fromthedropdownmenu.Ifan802.11gclientisconnectingtotheEthernetConverterthen select the Auto-802.11g-802.11b option.

BSS Basic Rate Set - The basic rate set only applies to Ad-hoc connections. Select the properratesetfortheAd-hocclienttheEthernetConverterisgoingtoassociatewith.Older routers may require that you reduce the BSS Basic Rate set to Default(11b). If you are unsure of the correct setting, try Default.

Frame Bursting Mode-FrameBurstingtechnologyallowsforquickerwirelessnetworkspeedsbyreducingtheoverheadforeachwirelesspacket.Ifyouraccesspointsupportsit, 125* High-Speed Mode offers the best overall performance of the frame bursting modes. You may leave this set to the 125* High Speed Modeatalltimes;ifacompatableaccesspointisnotavailablethenthedevicewilloperateasastandard802.11gdevice.

Wireless Output Power-ThewirelessoutputpowersettingchangesthepoweroftheEthernetConverter'sinternalradio.Reducingtheoutputpowercanoftenreduceinterferencewithotherdevices.Youshouldleavetheoutputpowersetat100%unlessyouwanttoreducerangeorinterferencewithother2.4GHzdevicesisapparent.

Data Encryption-SelectWEP64,WEP128,TKIP,orAESencryptionfromthedropbox.IfWEPisselected,thenaWEPkeyorseriesofWEPkeysmustbeenteredintotheWEPkeyfield(s).PleaseselectwhetherthespecifickeyisASCIIorHEXfromthepulldownlistnexttothekeyfields.IfTKIPorAESisused,thenenterthepre-sharedkeyintheWPA-PSKfield.

Automatic Assignment (DHCP Server) - This setting allowstheEthernetConvertertoobtainitsIPaddressautomaticallyfromaDHCPserveronthenetwork.

Manual Assignment - This assigns the Ethernet Converteraspecific("Static")IPaddress.IfaStaticIPaddressisselected,youmustenteraSubnetMaskaswell.

NOTES: ToconfiguretheEthernetConverterinthefuture,ausermustbothknowitsIPaddress,and,beonthesamesubnet.BecarefulwhenchangingtheEthernetConverter’sIPaddress!

IfchangestotheEthernetConverter’sIPaddressmakeitdifficultforyoutoaccesstheweb-basedconfigurationutility,rememberthatyoucanusetheEthernetConverterManagementsoftwaretoreconfigureorresetDHCP(seepages8-9)oraStaticIPaddress.IftheEthernetConverter'sIPaddresshasrevertedtothedefault1.1.1.1,youmaymanuallyconfigureyourcomputertoanIPaddressonthesamesubnet,suchas1.1.1.2,allowingittoconnecttotheEthernetConverter(seepages11-12).Don'tforgettochangeyourcomputer'sIPaddressbackwhenyou'vefinishedconfiguringtheEthernetConverter.

TheIPAddressdoesnotneedtobeintherangeoftheDHCPserver'sscopetosuccessfullypassDHCPrequeststonetworkclientsbehindtheEthernetConverter.

System Information - This page contains a summary of the Ethernet Converter's settings. Settings cannot be changed from this page. If the Ethernet Converter is obtaining its IPaddressfromaDHCPserver,thenreleaseandrenewbuttonswillbepresentatthebottomofthepage.ReleasingtheIPaddresswillmaketheEthernetConverterimpossibletoconfigurewithoutre-initializingthedeviceorusingtheEthernet Converter Manager.

Name and Password - These settings affect the naming and passwordprotectionoftheEthernetConverter.

Ethernet Converter Name - The Ethernet Converter name isaquickreferencenamefortheEthernetConverter.ItisrecognizedbytheEthernetConverterManager.

Administrator Password-TheadministratorpasswordisusedtoprotecttheEthernetConverterfromunwantedconfigurationchanges.Settingthepasswordprotectsconfigurationchangesfrombothweb-basedconfigurationand the Ethernet Converter Manager.

Configuration Limitations-LimitswhatkindofclientsmayconfiguretheEthernetConverter.CheckingProhibit Configuration from Wireless ClientspreventschangestoconfigurationbyclientsthatarenotconnecteddirectlytotheEthernetConverter.CheckingProhibit Configuration from Wired ClientspreventsconfigurationchangesbeingmadebyanyclientthatisdirectlyconnectedtotheEthernetConverter'sLANports.Checkingbothboxesmakesallfurtherconfigurationimpossible.TheEthernetConvertermustthenbeinitializedbeforeanychangestoconfigurationcanbemade.Becarefulwiththesecheckboxes!

Initialization and Reboot-Thispagecontainssettingsthatrestartandre-initializetheEthernetConverter.

Initialize-InitializingtheEthernetConverterrestorestheEthernetConverter'ssettingstodefaultsettings.Thiswilleraseallconfigurationchangesmade,includingallpasswords.Allconfigurationwillhavetoberedoneasthoughtheproductwerebrandnew.YoumayalsoinitializetheEthernetConverterwiththeINITbutton;seepage 24.

Restart - Restarting the Ethernet Converter performs a simple rebootsimilartowhatwouldoccurifthepowerwascycledoff/ontheEthernetConverter.Nosettingsarelostinthiscase.Itwilltakeabout30-60secondstoreboot.TherebootiscompletewhenthewirelessLEDiscontinuouslylit.

Firmware Update-ThispageallowsyoutoupdatetheEthernetConverter'sFirmware.ThisinvolvesdownloadinganewerfirmwarefromtheBuffaloTechnologywebsiteandusingthispagetoinstallitonyourEthernetConverter.Newfirmwarefilescontainnewsoftwarecodethataddsbugfixes,additionalfeatures,increased performance, and revised interfaces.

Toupdatethefirmware,presstheBrowsebuttonandsearchforthedownloadedfirmwarefile,whichyou'veprobablydownloadedtoyourdesktop.Onceyou'velocatedit, press the Firmware Updatebutton.Thefirmwareupdateprocesstakesabout90seconds.Usually,yoursettingswillberetained;youwillprobablynothavetoredoanyconfiguration.

Troubleshooting

Initializing the Ethernet Converter returns it to default settings. This might be useful ifyoucannotaccessconfigurationsettings,havelostthepasswordtotheEthernetConverter, or desire to return the settings to the default factory settings.

Toinitializethedevice,simplyholdintheblackINIT button on the side of the Ethernet Converterfor5secondsoruntiltheDIAGlightglowsred.Allowaminutefortheinitializationtocomplete.Afterwards,refertotheQuickSetupGuideorthebeginningofthisUserManualtoreconfiguretheEthernetConverter.
