Give & Gain Day 2013 in the West Midlands

Information For Community OrganisationsFriday 17 May 2013

What is Give & Gain Day?

Give & Gain Day is the UK’s largest day of employee volunteering where business volunteers support local schools and community groups in areas of greatest disadvantage, during working hours. Over 10,000 employees volunteered for Give & Gain Day last year, with over 600 of them based in the West Midlands.

Give & Gain Day 2013 will take place on Friday 17 May and the theme will be supporting youth.

The strength in numbers of Give & Gain Day enables us to complete tasks that would otherwise be unachievable and demonstrates the power that volunteering can play in transforming communities.

How can my organisation get involved?

Business in the Community are looking for projects for teams of volunteers to work on for a day. This could be painting, gardening and basic DIY jobs or it could involve working with your client group to deliver

workshops or activities which will benefit them.

Volunteer teams can range in size from 4 to 50 volunteers but a typical team size is around 10. You will need to specify a clearly defined project and the tasks should be simple enough to be achievable for ordinary volunteers – most volunteers are not skilled trades people and it is unlikely we will consider a project that has obvious risks to volunteer’s safety.

Volunteer groups often come with a small budget for materials so don’t worry if you can’t afford paints or don’t have the necessary tools for the job.

In all cases a Business in the Community representative will come and view your project before advertising it to potential volunteers.

What we ask of you

Your organisation must have Public Liability Insurance to cover volunteers.

We ask that you be available for a pre project site visit with the volunteer team leader (normally 1 hour). This will be organised and accompanied by Business in the Community.

Following the site visit you will need to be contactable to answer any queries the volunteer team leader may have to help them organise the project.

Someone from your organisation must be present on the day to welcome the volunteers and be on hand to guide them if necessary in their task.

We would like you to make the volunteers feel valued and to provide feedback after the project.

Business in The Community will brief the volunteers on Duty of Care and Health and Safety to ensure that a quality project is delivered. Also we are on hand to help iron out any queries or problems that should arise.

In 2012 In the West Midlands 35 companies provided almost 700 volunteers who together supported 60 schools and community organisations - impacting the lives of over 10,000 individuals!
