    September 2014

    South WesternSchool District

    Dear West Manheim Parents/Guardians,

What a fantastic start to the 2014-2015 school year at West Manheim Elementary School! The

students came to school on August 25th ready to learn! During the first week of school, the

teachers spent a great deal of time helping the students to remember classroom and school

routines. This helps to ensure for a positive year for our students.

Our students and staff members also took the time to review the STAR expectations for our

school. Please take the time to ask your child about the STAR guidelines.

S Strive to do your Best

T Take Responsibility for your Actions

    A Always be Safe

    R Respect People and Property

Included on the next page of this newsletter is our STAR Behavior Matrix which will explain to

you what we expect of all students in the classroom, hallway, cafeteria, playground, bathroom,

and bus. This is important information for you to have, so you have a solid understanding of

the West Manheim behavioral STAR expectations.

In addition, please be on the look-out for a STAR booklet that will give you more detailed infor-

mation about the STAR guidelines at West Manheim. There is a special section that you may

like to use for home STAR expectations, as well.

As we continue through the month of September, everyone at West Manheim looks forward to a

wonderful year with our students...They are STARs each and every day! Have a great school

year, as parents, and we thank you for supporting your child at home, ensuring that school re-

    mains a priority EACH DAY.

    Sincerely,

    Brian M. Cromer

    IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE INFORMATION

(from page 15 of the Elementary Handbook)

    Educational Travel

We believe learning is an experience that is not limited to the confines of a school building. Thus

travel by a student of an educational nature and/or attendance at educational functions other

than school will be considered legitimate excused absence from school if they are properly

planned and effected. Cooperative attempts to enhance the educational value of the experience

are to be made between the school, parents, and student. The following are guidelines for deal-

    ing with this matter.

    A. The student must have maintained a regular pattern of attendance.

    B. The request should be made on a form available in each school office at least

one week in advance of the absence. Parents are responsible for securing this

    form.

    C. The parents, student, and administrator must agree on the provisions for en-

hancing the educational experience. The purpose of attending will be needed for

those travel experiences relating to an educational function.

    D. The student must be accompanied by his/her parent/guardian or another adult

    approved by the administration.

    E. Educational travel absences will be limited to not more than two occasions per

    academic year

that shall not exceed a total of 5 school days.

    F. Special arrangements for educational travel which is expected to exceed 5

school days must be made with the principal. Educational travel is discouraged

the first 10 days of school. Educational travel requests will be deniedduring the

    PSSA testing days listed below:

    Grades 3, 4 & 5 PSSA Reading & Language Arts on April 14, 15, 16, 17, 2015.

    Grades 3, 4 & 5 - PSSA Math on April 21, 22, 23, 24, 2015.

    Grade 4 PSSA Science on April 28, 29, 30, May 1, 2015

    G. An absence shall not be marked excused until provisions are completed. This shall be

within one week of return unless otherwise specified.
