FAYETTEVILLE, NC - On August 26, 2011 in Downtown Fayetteville, from 6:00 pm to 11:30 pm, the Fayetteville NationalOrganization for Women (NOW) and Downtown Alliance are sponsoring Fourth Friday “Women’s Night Out.” This is a celebration of the 91 st Anniversary of women winning the right to vote. “Women’s Night Out” compliments the national commemoration of August 26as Women’s Equality Day which honors the anniversary of the passage of women’s suffrage. The anchor event is a vintage SuffrageParade.

The parade opens at the Market House with remarks, recognition of elected female dignitaries, a city proclamation and an unannouncedspecial performance. The parade kicks off from the Market House with 100 women joined by several male suffragists and ends on RayAvenue. Observers will see certain vintage elements of the early 1900’s suffrage parades reflected in the march including some womenmarcher s in white, full-length dress with classic suffrage sashes carrying street -wide banners and upright pole banners. A woman on awhite horse leads the parade recognizing the role of Inez Milholland in the famous 1913 parade in DC organized by suffragist AlicePaul. Acting hecklers will mock assault marchers along parade route as a part of the re -enactment.

Other activities that night include a reception for and presentation by Mary Walton in the Rainbow Room. Mrs. Walton resides in NewJersey and recently authored “A Woman’s Crusade: Alice Paul and the Battle for the Ballot.” She will sign copies of her book and beavailable to greet the public and engage in interviews at the City Center Gallery & Books.

In conjunction with Women’s Night Out, two benefits will be conducted. The Rape Crisis Volunteers (RCV) of Cumberland Countyis partnering with the Cameo Art House Theatre and Fayetteville NOW for an evening screening of “Generation M: Misogyny inMedia and Culture.” Suggested admission donations benefit the RCV. Downtown businesses are also conducting a non -perishablefood drive July 22 through August 26, 2011 to benefit Fayetteville Urban Ministry. Women’s Night Out Parade ParticipantInstructions

We need a broad representation of women and girls crossing all demographi cs andaffiliations. The event is focused completely on honoring and celebrating women winning the vote. The Downtown Alliance andFayetteville NOW are partners in sponsorship of the event and may carry self- identifying signage. All signs, buttons, banners willreflect a suffage celebration of “Votes for Women” (non - party affiliation) as the focus issue.

As a part of the vintage effect, the preference is to dress in a 1910s -20s look. Long white skirts and hats welcome. Vintage is notrequired however. Casual sum mer white can be worn given the heat, but of course vintage would further the historical look of theparade. Marchers will be responsible for securing their own clothing.

Here is an example of dress but we suggest the summer version - very light fabric and short sleeves. It does not have to be letter-perfect period dress but in keeping with a vintage flavor.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Feminist_Suffrage_Parade_in_New_York_City,_1912.jpeg

Our guest author that night is Mary Walton, author of "A Woman's Crusade: Alice Paul and the Battle for the Ballot." Thoseunfamiliar with Alice Paul's role in the movement may want to rent 'Iron Jawed Angels' which covers some of the suffragistimprisonment experiences. In this (warning) scene, Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) is force fed after refusing to eat. The women singing"Will The Circle Be Unbroken" are suffragists who have been imprisoned for supporting the women's right to vote.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO70ZjZ0wrw

In your e-mail, I need your name, your e- mail address, phone number and if you will wear vintage or casual. We also will have someseating on the Downtown Trolley which will be in the parade for senior women or those with walking impairments.
