A Letter from the President

As we approach the day of reckoning, November 8,

2016, we have redoubled our efforts to ensure the

election of the first woman to seek the highest office

in the land. We moved fast, post-convention, to work

with Hillary Clinton’s campaign, VICTORY2016. In

early September, the WNDC became the DC

headquarters of the campaign, and the mansion

started buzzing with phone banking and other GOTV

activities. A steady stream of motivated young

interns and fellows populates the third floor every

evening to do their part in this historic election.

On October 6, many prominent local Democratic

leaders helped celebrate the official grand opening

of the campaign’s headquarters at WNDC. The

campaign is organizing women-to-women phone

banking every Wednesday and Seven Sisters

Colleges’ alumni phone banking every Friday until

election day. On October 20, the campaign hosted

the “DC Women Together Summit” at the Club, with

the mayor, other DC dignitaries, and almost 300

participants.

We are expecting record attendance at our Election

Night Watch Party on November 8, including many

foreign election watchers who are descending on DC

and are booking tables for our formal dinner that

night. We are also gaining considerable media

interest and many interview requests, given that

women may well decide the final election outcome.

As we anticipate the likely inauguration of the first

woman president, in 2020 the centenary of women’s

suffrage, and in 2022 our own 100th anniversary, we

stand united at this unique moment in the history of

our nation.

DAVID MARANISS — Once in a Great City-A Detroit Story

David Maraniss, an associate editor at the Washington Post, has been chronicling American life since the 1960s, with books on Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, the protesters of the Vietnam War, and sports heroes like Vince Lombardi and Roberto Clemente.

His recent Once in a Great City: The Detroit Story, winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award,

captures this great American city at its pinnacle in the early 1960s, when the auto industry was selling more cars than ever, Barry Gordy's Motown records had Amer-icans dancing in the streets, and Walter Reuther's UAW (United Auto Workers) was in its heyday. Two months before the March on Washington, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had given his first “I Have a Dream” speech in Detroit.

Maraniss’s elegantly written book tracks the great city’s decline and the many factors behind it. We are pleased to welcome Pulitzer Prize winner David Maraniss back to the Club.

The book will be available for purchase and signing.

ELECTION NIGHT EVENT — The Message is Unity and Hope!

TIME: 7:00 PM

Join your fellow Democrats to celebrate the event WNDC has been awaiting for almost 100 years—the election of the first female U.S. president, Hillary Rodham Clinton. WNDC is the place to be as we watch the 2016 election results roll in and cheer our candidates for the Senate and the House, as well.

Large-screen TVs will be stationed throughout the Club all evening so we can watch national and international media coverage and hear special guests share their comments on the unfolding results.

To ring in the evening, we will serve a formal dinner, followed immediately by watching the election results. An inviting buffet and cash bar will be available throughout the evening. Champagne is on ice and ready to go!

Among those invited are nationally known commentator and pollster Celinda Lake; young political reporter on "The Fix" team at the Washington Post, Aaron Blake; author, WNDC regular, former Clinton Administra-tion advisor and now Brookings Institution senior fellow, Elaine Kamarck; CBS Radio News political analyst and professor of communications at American University, Leonard Steinhorn; shrewd political analyst and partner, Rothenberg-Gonzales Political Report, Nathan Gonzales; and director of the National Press Club, Bill McCarren.

Role in a Changing World

The Program Committee is organizing a new program series, beginning with “The U.S. Role in a Changing World,” which kicked off with Derek Chollet’s September 29 presentation on President Obama’s foreign policy. The series “Social Role of the Arts” will begin January 10, 2017, with a presentation by poet and literary activist E. Ethelbert Miller. We plan to present one program every month in each series, with ample notice so those interested in these topics can attend. WINTER ART EXHIBITION RECEPTION-

Vatsala Menon — “Inner Visions”

TIME: 6:30 PM—8:00 PM

The Visual Arts and Museum Affairs Commit-tee presents “Inner Visions” by Vatsala Menon. Indian born, Vatsala discovered her love for painting late in life. She has since successfully exhibited at various locations through-

out Washington, Virginia and Maryland, such as Glenview Mansion, Montpelier Arts Center, Maryland Federation of Arts Charity Auction, Montpelier Art Gallery and recently at the Maryland Hall for Creative Arts in Annapolis.

Vatsala considers her art a mid-life rebirth, an expression of her inner thoughts, feelings, and senses translated on canvas. Her lifelong fascination with the moon resulted in the Moon Series, whereas the times we are living in today—surrounded by violence, unspeakable acts of ter-ror, and a lack of compassion and civility in the world—prompted her to process these issues in her “War Series”.

PRICE: The event is free, but registration is recommended.

After two years, the WNDC Cinema Night will reappear—starting on Friday, November 18.

“Where to Invade Next,” a recent Michael Moore film, will be shown, followed by a brief discussion.

The film involves Moore’s visits to various coun-tries to examine how Europeans view work, education, health care, sex, equality and other issues. He looks at the benefits of schooling in France, Finland, and Slovenia. In Italy, he marvels at how workers enjoy reasonable hours and generous vacation time. And in Portugal, Moore notes the effects of decriminalization of drugs. Through his travels, we discover just how different the U.S. is from the rest of the world… and enjoy the Michael Moore humor!

ARGUING WITH GOD — The Play by John Henry

TIME: 5:30PM—Bar opens

7:00PM— Play starts

Playwright John Henry, director Rick Davis, and a cast of dozens will present the DC premiere of a world-historical drama torn from the pages of early Judeo–Christian storytelling about the creation of humanity and the role of the Deity. First-time playwright John Henry presents a startling revision of the usual Old Testament stories, with a pronounced feminist twist, turning them on their heads. Henry casts a skeptical eye at tales of how "empires" are built by “good guys” who believe they have the moral right to use military force against “bad guys.” And he tackles the issues posed by the inevitable conflict between power and justice, and bares the malign and corrosive force of a "Chosen People" view of our own nation. In 2003, Henry founded the Committee for the Republic (and the Empire Salon).

PRICE: $30 Members/$40 Non-Members, including light snacks. Cash Bar.
