Women and Gender Studies Program, Georgetown University Women's International Human Rights WGST-253, Fall 2016 M/W, 12.30—1.45pm, White-Gravenor 201A Professor: Siobhán McGuirk [email protected] Office Hours: M/W, 11am—12pm ICC 456 Or by appointment via Skype (username = Siobhán McGuirk) Response time: I will respond to emails within 24 hours I will return coursework within 1 week I. COURSE DESCRIPTION For decades, feminists and other advocates have campaigned to establish human rights initiatives and agendas that protect and respond to women’s needs, at both national and international levels. This course explores the work of activists, institutions, advocates and scholars around the world to critically assess the successes and failures of human rights frameworks in advancing women's rights. Students will examine the ways in which politics, religion, culture, and social contexts have contributed to current practices and debates pertaining to women and gender in different parts of the globe. We will examine country- specific cases of human rights abuses—including gendered violence, trafficking, exclusions from development initiatives, restrictions of reproductive and sexual freedoms—and the different means people have adopted in order to combat them. Course Objectives By the end of the semester, seminar participants will be able to: Explain the philosophical, political and institutional grounding of women’s human rights, including knowledge of key conventions and agreements. Describe some of the diverse socio-cultural, political, and religious contexts that have shaped key debates concerning women’s international human rights over time. Assess and discuss tensions between: universalism and cultural relativity; international law and state sovereignty; and individual and collective rights, with reference to women. Apply intersectional, postcolonial and other feminist analyses to questions of human rights abuses. Critically engage with existing campaign efforts advocating for women’s human rights.
