By: Froidelyn M. Fernandez

TraditionalChina
Why do most Chinese people prefer boys than girls? I take care
of my elderly.
I have authority
in the household.
I pass on the family lineage.
I AM THE CORE OF
THE FAMILY.
I marry of to another family.
I am only financially responsible to my in-
laws.
When I entered history, I OFTEN CAUSED MEN PROBLEMS.
It’s a shame not to have a
son.

EXAMPLE OF AB0RTION QUOTAS
In 2009, Yunnan officials developed an implementation plan that outlined abortion targets for specific groups: ‘‘strictly prohibit the birth of
multiple children; for women who have multiple out-of-plan children and become pregnant again, the abortion rate must reach 100 percent; for women who have two out-of-plan children and become
pregnant again, the abortion rate must exceed 90 percent; for women who have one out-of-plan child and become pregnant again, the abortion rate must
exceed 85 percent.’’
EXAMPLE OF invasive local enforcement
In a small village in remote Guangdong, officials kept a record book that meticulously
charted the menstrual cycles and pelvic examination results of every woman of
childbearing age. Data showed that 98% of the 280 women were fitted with IUDs, and that every three months, the director of Family
Planning committee broadcast an announcement through the village

HOW DO YOU THINK CAN THE SHORTAGE OF
WOMEN IN CHINA AFFECT THEIR SOCIAL
STATUS?
SOME OF THE MAIN CHALLENGES TO
STOP THE ELIMINATION OF
GIRLS CONSIST OF:
MODIFYING THE RIGID CUSTOM OF
1. PATRILOCAL AND PATRILINEAR MARRIAGE,
2. TRANSMISSION OF LAND RIGHTS LIMITED TO THE
MASCULINE HEIRS OF THE
PATRILINEAR CLAN.
3. THE TRADITIONAL WEAKENING A
DAUGHTER HAS WITH HER
BIOLOGICAL FAMILY AFTER MARRIAGE.
4. THE DEPENDENCE ON SONS FOR CARE
IN OLD AGE
5. OTHER TRADITIONAL SOCIAL
PRACTICES THAT MEAN DAUGHTERS HAVE LESS VALUE
THAN SONS IN THEIR FAMILY.
