From the Commander’s Desk . . . Recently, WVA Chapter 48 had the honor of establishing a community partnership with Green Extreme Homes (GEH), CDC. Through strategic partnerships, GEH is providing a path to financial stability and green, energy efficient, affordable housing options. One of WVA Chapter 48's goals in our second year is to help end homelessness among women veterans. These women tend to be invisible within homeless statistics--less likely to frequent shelters due to safety concerns. By choosing to “couch surf” with family and friends instead, they might not be identified through the usual outreach to homeless veterans. They are here though, and living in unstable environments. In military and veteran communities, women are the fastest-growing sub-population comprising 15 percent of active-duty and 10 percent of veterans. Research shows women veterans have unique situational needs compared to their male counterparts. For example, women veterans tend to be younger, more racially and ethnically diverse, and have a history of trauma or sexual abuse. They are more likely to be single or divorced with child care responsibilities. Less likely to have a family support system, they often shoulder greater economic stress than the men. These are only a few of the critical risk factors of homelessness. The population of women veterans in our communities is growing faster than the systems we have in place to support them. Women veterans in need often isolate themselves decreasing their access to critical interventions that could prevent them from becoming homeless. It will remain a priority for our chapter to be there for these women veterans at risk. As we continue to build our partnership with Green Extreme Homes, joining them in their mission, together we will set-up a holistic program for the Mullins Transitional Home. There is much to be done in the months to come. We will hold painting and decorating workdays to create a new home environment that is both warm and welcoming to our women and their children. There will be continued fund raising to help subsidize the veterans’ first months of placement as they establish and work towards transition goals. And much more. This is an extremely important, worthwhile project taking all of us working together with our community to bring success in supportive housing and strong transitional programs for our women veterans in need. Like all veterans, they want successful lives, relationships, and careers after service, a quality life with dignity and respect. We will continue to be there alongside. A personal note from our WVA Chapter 48 Transition Support Program Committee Chair Diane Fraser:

“As one of the members of our WVA Chapter 48 Color Guard, I had the opportunity to participate in the opening ceremony of the 2018 Field of Honor in Georgetown,Texas. What an honor it was to march with our new chapter flag on Sunday and to post the colors on Monday.”

“I purchased three flags in memory of my father, mother, and father-in-law. While I was anxious to see those flags, I was nearly overwhelmed at the sight ofapproximately 2,000 American flags placed in neat rows on that field. I felt each of those flags represented the presence of patriots who made the decision to “bethere” for our country. It was a physical reminder of the thousands of servicemen and women who had gone before me and in whose heritage I shared. As I stoodbeside each of my relatives’ flags, I was thankful for them, and, for the future generations of men and women who choose to “be there” for our country’s sake.”

FIELD OF HONOR November 3-12, 2018 San Gabriel Park, Georgetown, TexasTxFieldOfHonor.org 10 days honoring our U.S. military andfirst responders.2,000 3x5-ft U.S. flagsPurchased for charity.WVA Chapter 48 received some distributionand several members participated in purchasing flags, includingCdr Camilla Zimbal (left bottom photo, right).
