How did you getstarted in this business?

How I got started in the video pro-duction business was quiet by acci-dent. I decided to go back to schoolas my children where nishing highschool. I started out taking graphicdesign and ound out i I took theTeleproduction course I could earn anAssociate Degree.

Once I entered the program, I ell inlove with everything that goes on toproduce good, entertaining, inorma-tive video. I started producing videowhile still in school. Since there werenot many jobs available at the time.

Decided to go into business mysel.Fortunately, I met my business part-

ner Benny Dawkins. He too had thesame vision. So that is how NuDayProductions started in the all o 2010.

What is your background-what were you doing beorethis business?Beore I started in video production, Iwas a stay at home mom or many years.

I used my time to volunteer in variousways or many years. Also during thattime I learned how to paint. So over theyears I painted in many orms or people. So then I a business called Sum-Art. I didartistic murals and aux nishes in busi-nesses and people homes.

What is a good earlystory about your business? When we rst started NuDay Produc-

tions, we had a show called Tell MeAbout It. We would eature people ointerest, upcoming events and non-prots. One o my avorite stories wasthe day we went to the Center or Ag-ing in York, SC. The seniors there werejust wonderul. They had such greatstories to tell. We learned how much

they did to help the community andother charities. They knit hats or can-cer patients going through chemo andbaby quilts or unwed mothers to keepthe babies warm. The love and supportthey gave to each other was just won-derul to be able to share on our show.

    What is unusual or unique

about your business, in com-parison to your competitors orsimilar businesses?NuDay is dierent due most o ourwork is done to be seen on the webor other new technologies such asusing the QR code to help businessadvertise in a cost ecient manner. We also produce dierent types o

programming that most people ndo interest. We love to let people sharetheir stories o their lives, which bringsus to a special video product we pro-ducePersonal Legacy we workwith a amily member to tell theirown history and/or o their amily. We

interview the amily member and asthey share their storywe includephotos, documents and other memo-

We also are also working with RogerCullis o Cullis Entertainment. We areproducing two shows. One is CarolinaSessions, eaturing unsigned musicaltalent o the Carolinas. The bands orartist will be able to showcase their

talent and the audience will learnmore about them during the inter-view style program. Carolina Sessionsis hosted by Patti Mercer.

The other show is Sports Night with BillRosinski. Again this is an interview styleshow. Bill will be talking with athletespast and present. Currently we areshowing past episodes which you cannd at www.cullisentertainment.com.

Is there a customer experi-ence you are most proud o?There are three experiences I amproud o. Working with people tohelp them connect amily histories,so their children connect with theirpast in such a remarkable way. I amalso really proud working with RogerCullis on the two shows and beinginnovative in producing the shows orthe internet instead o broadcast andbring quality programming to share

with viewers. Lastly, I am so excitedto announce a new show we will beproducing. It is called Mommy Mattershosted by Adrian Garson. It will dealwith a ull range o inormation rompregnancy to teens. We will have ex-perts rom the medical proession aswell as un events or the whole amily.

What is an interesting story abouta client interaction you had?Recently we produced a video or theRonald McDonald House o Charlotte. We were asked to lm and produce atestimonial video or RMH in late Jan-uary to be shown to Fight Night. Thatis where we met a parent o a childthat had a wonderul, loving experi-

ence staying at a Ronald McDonaldHouse. It was such a touching story.I had a hard time not to cry while hewas relied his story during the inter-view. It was a great honor to shoot ata wonderul acility and a great cause.

What are some o your great-est challenges in your business? One o our biggest challenges to saleour products or production and work

on the productions. There is neverenough time in a day to get every-thing done. So I have had to learn tomanage time and still have a lie withmy amily. Sometimes it is hard to turno the business and go out and haveun. But yet, I am always having unwith our projects. So maybe that iswhy it is hard to stop.

What would you most like thereader to know about your jour-ney in business?I would like any one to know that itis never too late to achieve what youwant out o lie. As I said in the begin-ning o the article, I received my As-sociates Degree as my children were

going to college and graduating highschool. I saw them looking at theuture araid and ull o doubt.

I was a high school graduate, but ithas always bothered me that I neverwent to college. So in 2008 I decided

to change that. So at the age o 45,I entered school in the all semestero 2008 and nished in 2010. Duringthat time I was awarded two awardsor leadership. One or the AppliedSciences Department and the secondwas rom the Teleproduction Depart-ment or leadership in the classroom.

Now I am out in the communitymeeting other business women and

men and eel like I have come hometo the comort o this job. I love myjob. You never know what is going

to happen or who you are going tomeet. Never in a million years didthis arm girl rom Northeastern PAever believe she would have a careerin this business. Most o all, I haveto thank my husband, Barry, or allto love and support he gives me allalong the way.

5 Reasons Women Mus Plan orReiremen Dierenly Tan Men

    by Joyce Palmer

    I

ts true all is not air in love andwar and retirement planningor men and women. When it

comes to planning or the u-ture, everyone needs a nancial strate-gy but or women it is even more criti-cal. Over the years, women have madesignicant progress in the economyand the workorce and continue tomake impressive nancial gains. How-ever, with all the success and opportu-nity or women in the marketplace, a

lot more responsibility is added whenit comes to money and nancial deci-sions. Retirement planning can bemore dicult or women than or menor a ew reasons.

Women live longerThe good news or women: they live

longer, so they will have longer toenjoy their retirement. The bad news:We live longer, and so our retirementwill be much more expensive thanour male counterparts. On averagewomen are expected to live an addi-tional ve years longer than men and

must have the nancial means to doso. Although this doesnt seem likea long time, this could mean need-

ing hundreds o thousands o dollarsmore in savings due to rising healthcare costs, infation, and cost o living.

Lower pay compoundedby ewer working yearsWe earn less than men. While somereports suggest the pay gap is nar-rowing, the Census Bureau said in

September that ull-time women em-ployees still make, on average, only 77cents or every dollar earned by men.We tend to spend less time on thejob, because o care-taking responsi-bilities or children and elderly parents(or both), and we are more likely thanmen to work part-time. Because othe part-time work and/or ewer years

in the work orce, we are less likely tobe covered by company retirement orpension plans.

Lower Social Securitybenets payoutsDue to the shorter working career,

and low earnings, assuming there isany social security let at our retire-ment, it will be less than our malecounterparts. Because o shortercareers and possible lower incomes,a signicant proportion o womencurrently do not receive enoughin Social Security benets to meeteven their basis needs. The SocialSecurity Administration ( SSA, 2011)reports that average annual Social

Security income received by women65 years and older were $12,155 in2009. These combined actors putmany women at high risk or povertyas they age, especially i they do notprepare accordingly.

Long-term health care needsLong-term health care is an issue con-

cerning many women. It has been saidthat long-term care needs hit womentwice; rst in providing care to parentsor other loved ones, and then later inlie when women need long term careor themselves. Not only are womenmore likely to be the recipients o long-term care but they are also more likely

to be caregivers than men. Womenmake up about 75 percent o nurs-ing home residents, and seven out oten unpaid caregivers are women. It isimportant or women to plan early orlong-term care, so the high cost doesnot threaten their nancial security.

Financial CondenceAccording to Women & Co, a divisiono Citi, 65% o women think talkingabout money socially isnt nearly astaboo as it was pre-recession, butoverall condence is still lower thanmen. Women oten are poorly in-ormed about nancial matters. Imarried, women tend to delegatenancial decision-making to theirhusbands (Im not saying this hap-

pens all the time but its common). When women absent themselvesrom nancial decision-making, theysuer i their husbands die suddenly.Oten women dont know where keynancial accounts are held or whatkind o planning their husbands mayhave had in place or them. Newlywidowed women are especially vul-nerable. Developing nancial con-dence starts with seeking a nancialproessional to help you in buildingyour knowledge and supporting youwith your goals. Its never too early ortoo late to take control o your nan-cial uture. Financial condence looksabulous on every woman.

or some couples, talkingabout nances becomestaboo due to dierences in

money management stylesand nancial goals or the uture. Itturns out those nancial disagreementsbetween couples may refect a unda-mental dierence in the way men andwomen approach money matters.

Data reveals the role gender may

play during nancial planningResearch commissioned byAmeriprise Financial reveals that menand women are planning or one otheir biggest nancial milestones retirement in very dierent ways.1 More than hal o men surveyedreport setting money aside in theirown investments, but not nearly as

many women say theyve done thesame (54% vs. 46%). Men are alsomore likely to have determined theamount o income they will needin retirement (31% vs. 20%). Whilewomen may not be ocusing as muchon nancial goals, they are more likely

to report that theyve thought aboutwhat theyd like to do when theyretire. Women are signicantly more

likely than men to say they plan tospend more time with amily (41% vs.34%), and that proximity to amily is avery important actor in determiningwhere they will retire (40% vs. 27%).

They are also more likely to rate accessto healthcare options and acilities asa very important actor (38% vs. 32%).

These dierences in how men andwomen approach key nancial deci-sions may be present or many othermilestones as well, such as starting aamily or buying a home. So how canyou bridge the gap to approach yourgoals in a way that makes both youand your partner comortable? The

ollowing tips may help guide youthrough these conversations.

Also remember that nancialplanning isnt just math it can be anemotional process as well. Balance ra-tional thinking rom a nancial stand-point with nding the right way tocommunicate your ideas and expec-tations as a part o amily discussions.

Understand your diferencesThe key here is to understand each

others nancial personality and ap-proach to money, so you can tackle yournancial needs and goals with mutualrespect. Its helpul to recognize yourown nancial strengths and weaknessesand those o your spouse or partner soyou can have a rational conversation andnd a common ground. likely evolve as you move through lie,but make sure both partners are in-volved along with way. While its not apleasant thought, there is a possibilitythat you or your spouse may be man-aging your nances alone at somepoint. Its important that bothpartners remain equally involved innancial decision-making so in theevent that one spouse is let to makethese decisions alone, they can re-

main nancially secure. This may alsominimize confict amongst other am-ily members in the wake o a tragedyor sudden death.

Put it all in perspectiveWhile nances can create plenty o

stress in relationships, its important tokeep the big picture in mind. While youplan as a couple, consider importantactors like your career goals, how youmight support your children, and whenand how you might retire. Though talk-ing about nances may never comenaturally, plan some time with yourspouse or partner this year to have anopen nancial dialogue and to shareyour vision o your uture together.

e all go into business orone reason or anotherand that is to hope-

ully make money andreceive a prot but hopeully there is amuch bigger reason. We should go intobusiness to serve others and to sharewho we are with the world. More impor-tantly, our gits and talents make roomor us to walk in our authentic selves andshare experiences and opportunitieswith others to ulll a need or a want. Re-

gardless, your authentic marketing voiceshares with the world who you are andhow you want to share your talents withyour ideal clients.

We would love or our businesses toserve the masses but the truth is every-one is not our clients. Your ideal clients

are those that get what you oer, theyresonate not only with your productsand services but know, like and trustyou - your true authentic sel. They arewilling to pay you what you are worthand respect the results that you deliver.Yet, how do you attract your ideal cli-

ents and share your authentic sel withthe world while having un doing whatyou love? A lot o business owners

that I coach and consult dont knowwho their ideal clients are or how toattract them. This ends up in a lot orustration or them and begins a cycleo doubting themselves and whatthey are meant to do in the world. It isabout changing your marketing para-digm and begins to open up authenti-cally and honestly in your business.

First, when nding your AuthenticMarketing Voice, you must becomevery clear on what you are oeringand not be scattered because yourclients will not have a clear under-standing o your business. Your idealclients must connect with you in order

to engage with you, your personalityand your oers. It has to speak to theirneeds and provide a solution to theirchallenges. Your authentic voice is onethat creates an open door to changingones paradigm in how your marketingspeaks to them - your target audience.

It has been stated that some tradi-tional marketing methods now confictwith the mission and purpose o thebusiness owners desires and does notserve them in attracting, connectingand engaging their ideal clients.

Secondly, your authentic market-ing voice must provide a messagethat projects the essence o whoyou are and what makes you unique

that would widely attract your idealclients. The message and the brandmust be consistent and honest withwhat you want to send out into theworld. Your voice can either be per-ceived in such a manner that sendsthe real and authentic you or it couldhave other unwanted aects. Regard-less, what your marketing message

says about you totally depends onyou. Your words, imagery and emo-tional intellect all play a huge role inyour unique brand message and howyou connect and engage. This mustbe oered in such a way that is irre-sistibly and authentically attractive.

Thirdly, your authentic marketing voiceis sharing what your clients will be en-gaged in and the experience that theywould have i working with you or pur-chasing your products. Your marketingspeaks to them and is attracted to youmagnetically because o your unique-

ness; favor and they are comortablewith you. Finding your authentic mar-keting voice does not sound salesy ormisleading but it grabs the attention andholds it to encourage them to call andgo urther in the sales process. The key isto connect on a level that your ideal cli-ents see the real you and you are irresist-ibly attractive because like attracts like.

ow would you describea healthy work environ-ment? Do you (em-

ployer) consciously pro-mote a healthy work environment? What dierence does that make?

The word healthy can reer tophysical, mental or emotional health.Though all three are important, men-tal and emotional health can greatlyimpact a persons physical health.

With our society having multiple yearso a sluggish economy, it takes a majortoll on our entire community. Havingrepeated years o workorce reduc-tions, continued decreases in sales andproductivity, rozen payrolls, and evenreduced benets, negatively impacts

the entire workorce and their ami-lies. These events actually infuence allthree aspects o health, though it mayrst be seen via physical signs.

With this being the case, many com-panies and organizations are also

nding morale to be very low. Thiscontributes to an unhealthy work en-vironment. For those companies who

have been blessed with good activ-ity, our community is in desperateneed o them sharing their bountiesby using local services and productsto pump positive energy into thosearound them. (Like the phrase or ideao paying it orward!)

    Employees today need positive and

encouraging communication romthe employer, as well as positive en-ergy in multiple orms. Employeeswant to believe that employers careand that they listen. Some smallways to do this can include 1) havingthe employer (owner/president, etc.)be more visible and accessible to the

workorce; 2) demonstrate a genuineconcern by nding ways o thank-ing employees or their hard work; 3)look or ways to help employees doa better job (eciency and/or saetytraining, etc.); and 4) use creative waysto help employees nancially.

Obviously, you may wonder how toaccomplish some o these eorts. Here are some ideas to consider:

    Have Employer be more visible/

accessible- Set days/times when youoer to meet with a specied group ordepartment in the Break Room or co-ee/sot drinks, etc. and possibly providecookies, ruit, etc. or short chat sessionsor updates on the business. Let the

employees talk and be conscious to bea really good listener! Answer what youcan, limit the time or these sessions, but be sure to ollow up on answersthat required some research. This dem-onstrates that you are a straight-orwardand honest employer.

Healthy Work EnvironmentDemonstrate genuine concernvia thank you gestures to em-ployees or their hard work: Talk toemployers in your business neighbor-hood and look or ways to help ellowemployers out by providing discountsor services that can be given to eachothers employees. (i.e. Dry Cleaning

discounts, restaurant coupons, reducedcar repair, tires, etc.) Maybe purchasepizza once a month or employees, etc.

Employees value being oeredtraining and development work-shops: The Society o Human Re-

source Management (SHRM) has sur-veyed companies or years and oundthat most employees seek coachingand training in order to grow withtheir employers. Thereore, look oran area that would really benetyour employees. For instance, GoodCustomer Service Training, ConfictResolution Training, Team Building, etc. Such opportunities can help youremployees be more productive.

Ways to help employees managetheir fnances better: Unless youstudied being an accountant or nan-cial planner, you and your employeescould nd yoursel struggling withstretching each dollar. Infation eatsup more o our money each month,as most things seem to be increasing

in cost these days. Groceries, gaso-line, etc. are all costing more. Even iyou think you are doing all you can tostretch your money, consider provid-ing a Money Management Workshopor your employees. They could walkaway with new knowledge or man-aging the money they have. Some

money management techniques mayappear to be something everyoneshould know, but not necessarily. Ione employee nds a new way to savesome money or spend it more wisely, this workshop will be a success! Showyour employees that you DO care by

educating them on ways to personallybenet them and their amilies.

All o these ideas can greatly improve anorganizations work environment. Em-ployees look to their owner/presidentor encouragement and inspiration. There are some other ideas to improvethe work environment, i.e. have light, bright colors on your walls and foors, allow or some personalization o each

persons work area, consider sot, up-beat music in the work area (lits spiritsand lightens ones moods, etc.).

One last consideration is or the em-ployer and/or supervisor to keep eachemployee current o expectations and

eedback on his/her perormance.Good communication and respectis critical between an employee andthe employer. Each positive eort thatyou invest into your workorce paysdividends. As the saying goes time ismoney, so dont let time slip away. Iyou dont take any positive steps orwardor invest in your workorce, nothing willchange or improve. A healthy work en-vironment begins with positive energy,

and this begins with the employer.

    ajor Changes Are

    Happening!We have seen so many

changes, especiallyin the last three years. Know that thisyear will hold more changes than thelast 10 years have. I realize that is abold statement to make and I dontmake it lightly. Each day I use divina-tion cards to assist me in my physicaland spiritual journey. One o thosecards says Come Out o the Closet.

I have spent much o my lie trying tostay a closet psychic and spiritual intui-tive. I was taught rom a very youngage that I was dierent and that dier-ent was not acceptable. I am learning,on a daily basis, to understand andembrace my abilities and gits in the

    world o unseen inormation.

I share this with you so that you candecide to continue reading this ar-ticle i it eels right to you. From thismoment orward I am coming outo the closet! Each month I will pull

three divination cards and share theirmeaning with you. My intentionwhen I pull these cards is that they

will have a loving and peaceul mes-sage or each person that reads thisarticle. This months cards are romthe Goddess Guidance Oracle Carddeck because each o one o you is apowerul Goddess and a lie changingorce upon our planet. KNOW thateach one o you does have a voiceand that our Creator hears your voice

    and knows your heart.

The First Card is Guiding ChildrenMy intuition says that this is more aboutyour inner child than the literal interpre-tation o assisting our young souls. Asa mother o ve and a grandmother oeight I certainly have the opportunity to

assist our beautiul young souls but thiseels like it is more about you, my dearsister, than your loved ones.

I would ask you to look at your lieand see where you need laughter,un, games or play time. Know that

deep breathing and laughter canbreak up ear and sadness aster thananything else! Maybe you need toput that play time on your calendar?Maybe you need to be ully present, living in and enjoying the momentwhen your play time happens? Yourown intuition will tell you and all youhave to do is listen.

The Second Card is Sacred Space

This is a powerul message and criticalas we move through the rapid changeshappening around us and in our world. You can create sacred space within yourhome, your mind or your place o wor-ship. Our sacredness comes rom with-in our hearts where our soul resides.

To reach that sacred space we can cre-ate things in the physical world thathelp us eel more sacred but the truesacred place is within your mind andyour soul. Meditation is the practicethat will take you your sacred space. Itdoes take practice and it is well worththe time and eort to get there.

The Third Card is Bright FutureThis card tells you to stop worryingand that everything is going to bene. Regardless o the outside pic-ture, especially given the volatility inthe world right now, we live in a kindand loving universe. The soul that oc-

cupies your body is kind, gentle andloving at its very core.

Your mission right now is to nd thatcore o love and kindness regardlesso what it happening around you. Tomove as quickly as you can back tothat place o love and kindness whenoutside circumstances create eelingso ear or negativity.

Final Thoughts and MessagesThere are legions o angels and soulso the most beautiul light, more thanour minds can imagine, helping andguiding us right now. Call on themor assistance whenever you are noteeling ull o love and kindness.

There are many changes on the ho-

rizon which may leave you eelingrightened or discouraged. Do notbe dismayed because all is truly welland working in Divine timing to shitour world and our planet into theplace that our hearts desire. Yourswith much love and joy, Rev. MarcieWilliams-Browning.

attorney, I work with parentsall the time to make certaintheir minor children will be

protected i the death or incapacityo one or both parents should occur. One o the ways we do this is to nameguardians, who are essentially the peo-ple with legal permission to take cus-tody o your children i tragedy strikes.

The most common reason clientswhom are parents have shared withme as to why they have not movedorward with any type o Estate Planis that they could not decide on whowould be the guardian! Making thenomination legal is the easy part. The

reality is that Charlotte parents ndthat the hard part is choosing the ac-tual people you eel comortable withto provide your kids long-term care.

The second most common reasonin my experience has been that they

know who would be the guardians

but in the parents opinion, the kidswould are better i let in the care odierent guardians (and yes, perhapseven be separated rom one another)i the death o one or both parentsoccurred. O course this is a deci-sion thats not to be taken lightly, butlegally, there is nothing stopping yourom leaving your children to the care

o dierent people i it seems neces-sary or their uture well-being.

I in your conversation with a Charlotteestate planning attorney you eel sucha move is necessary, I urge you to makeyour wishes known and dont eel bador even guilty about your decision.

Sometimes its clearly or the best.

Not sure when this would be an ap-propriate choice or your amily? Letme give you an example as to whenthe decision to name separate guard-ians would come into play.

How Do I Name A Guardian ForMy ChildOr Worse, I Tink INeed Separae Guardians!!

Lets say you are a mother o 3 chil-dren. You have two girls rom yourrst marriage and your third child,a boy, is rom the 2nd. I somethingunexpectedly happened to you, thelaw dictates that your youngest sonwould be placed in the care o hisather, provided he is still living.

Yet you know that living with your cur-rent husband would not be the best

arrangement or the girls. The girlshave never been close to your newhusband and you cant imagine thesituation getting any better i you weregone. Worst o all, the girls have norelationship with their biological ather. In act, he signed over his rights in lieuo paying child support years ago. Soin your mind, leaving the children tohim is not an option either.

Based on this scenario, you decide tomake your sister the guardian o the girls, while your husband would continue toraise your son i something happens.

O course thats just one o MANY ex-

amples in which the decision to ap-point separate guardians or your chil-dren comes into play. As I tell parents allthe time, YOU and only YOU know whatis best or the physical and emotionalwell-being o your children in a timeo need. While the ideal situation is to

leave the kids together i possible, am-ily dynamics or lie circumstances maydictate that alternative plans be made.

Here are some additional things tothink about:1.Age o the Guardian2. Does the Guardian have children or

plan on having children?3. Is the person married?4. What are the religious belies o

the person?5. Is he or she a blood relative?6. Does your child actually like

this person?7. How drastic will your childs daily

lie change?8. Does this person have pets?

    9. What type o job does thisperson have?

    10. Would you live with that person?

Estate planning gently orces you tothink about such situations in ad-vance so your kids are given the bestchance to thrive i something unex-pectedly happens to you. You canthen document your wishes so thereis no question as to who you want tocare or your kids in your absence.Havent made plans yet to legally ap-

point someone to care or your minor

kids i something happens to you?Have you let the ear o conrontingthe issue hold you back? Then, stop

and think how much worse it will beor your children i they now have tobe subjected to a court proceedingon who they live with ater you die. That is a much worse ear, isnt it?

ave you ever wonderedwhy you can eat a lowat diet and still be

at? Or have you evermet someone who didnt weigh toomuch, but had an incredibly highbody at percentage or their size? Thereason is that eating atty oods is notthe only reason we become atter.

First it is good to understand thatat plays an important role in our

health. Our bodies need at or insula-tion, bone and organ protection andwarmth as well as helping brain unc-tion and the development o muscletissue. We just dont need too mucho it. Secondly its important to knowthat since at is used as a protector, there are things we can do to our

bodies that will trigger our bodysalert system to produce more at.

I like to think o our at cells like anarmy - ollow me on this. We havethis great group o buoyant soldiersthat go to places in the body and

keep guard. Bad guys come to at-tack, and bounce right o those littleat soldiers, thus keeping the organs

or bones sae. The more risks we ex-pose our organs and bones to, themore soldiers are needed to protectthem. They think theyre doing us aavor. They stand there with their littlehelmet and shield, proud with valor, knowing they are helping save ourlives, as we curse them or ruining ourlives (or at least our appearance!)

So what kinds o things alert the bodyto produce more o these at cells? Therst is articial sweeteners. Becausetheir chemical make up is carcino-genic, the bodys rst response is toprotect the vital organs rom beinginltrated with the poison. What this

means is that every time you drink adiet coke, while you are saving your-sel the calories and the sugar, you areslamming your bodies red alert buttonwhich releases stubborn at cells to runover to your mid section (kidneys, liver, stomach) and keep vigilant watch. Its

not just diet coke, but anything thathas any type o articial sweetener init. This type o carcinogen (poison) hasmany names: aspartame, saccharin, sucralose (not to be conused withsucrose), acesulame potassium (orAce K) and the most touted and loved,Splenda. The next time you thinkyoure doing yoursel a avor by eatingor drinking a diet ood or beverage, make sure its not laced with one o

    these at-invoking poisons.

It is amazing to me how many peopleare sleep deprived. Getting more thaneight solid hours o sleep each nighthas almost become a aux paux thesedays. Anyone, like mysel, gettingmore than eight hours a night is con-sidered to be lazy and unmotivated...maybe in need o some anti-depres-sants! However, study ater study hasshown how getting too little sleepcan actually make you more at. Thereason is that when your body is cutshort in its repairing time (AKA: sleep),it produces more o a stress hormonecalled cortisol. This little hormone is

responsible or the extra stubbornbelly at and grabbable love handlesthat many experience. Even thoughyou may not eel stressed out dueto your lack o sleep, over time, yourbody knows that it is in a state ostress, and responds by an over pro-

duction o cortisol which leads you tobecome more at.

Speaking o stress, it is another silentculprit o making our bodies atter. Forthe same reasons that sleep depriva-tion can cause our bodies to produceand store more at, our typical, everydaystress does the same thing. Throughoutthe day when you think your high levelso stress are just helping you get more

done, just know that part o what theyare helping you do is get more at!

Remember that at does not necessar-ily mean more weight; it can simply bea higher level o body at percentagewhich can be just as unhealthy as theextra weight. I you dont know whatyour body at is, you can usually have

it tested at your local gym. I you donthave a local gym and are interestedin knowing your body at percentage, give me a call! We can see where youare and i needed, talk about tips likethese and others to saely decreasethat number. Just dont call me tooearly, as I will be sleeping!

esale shops are a greatplace to nd amazingdeals. Sure--buying a

used crib mattress maynot be the best choice, but here areve items that are denitely worth thetime and money.

    1. Home accessoriesHome accessories like lamps, vases, art,and picture rames are usually overfow-ing rom the store shelves. Buying theseitems used is a great way to update yourhome without blowing your whole bud-get. When shopping or new accents, look or versatile pieces that can workdouble duty. For example, a large vaseis the perect or all seasons since it canbe lled with whimsical sand dollars inthe summer or brightly-colored holiday

    ornaments in the winter.

    2. BooksI you have a voracious reading ap-petite, second hand bookstores couldbe right up your alley. Used books sellor a raction o the retail price and

with a bit o hunting can be oundin good condition. And dont orgetabout textbooks either. Many college

students will attest to the act that aew highlighting marks are certainlyworth the discount.

    3. Sports gear and

exercise equipmentBuying used sports gear is always abargain. Some shops oer discountsas steep as 75% o retail prices. Manysports resale shops sell used exerciseequipment too.

    4. Kids clothesKids grow out o clothes so quicklythat buying new ones can put aserious dent in your wallet. Oneway to save money is to buy gently

used clothes. There are many re-sale shops that cater to specic agegroups no matter how young or oldyour children may be.

ou cant turn on the TV,drive down the road or goto a party without being

conronted with Americashottest obsession: weight. Diets area billion-dollar industry; companiesspend millions and millions luring youto try the latest diet (low carb, high pro-tein, low at, no at, you name it) withpromises that this will (nally!) be thesolutionyour shortcut to a thinnerbody. Advertising eorts also deeply a-

ect our children, who develop distort-ed body images and are oten on dietsas early as nine or 10 years o age.

Our culture touts diet pills, celebrityworkouts, convenience oods and trendydiets to help us achieve our desiredweight, but these quick-x solutions

have backred. Americas populace hasreached its highest weight in history.About hal o Americans are overweight;one-third are obese. Diets steer us awayrom our common sense and dip deeplyinto our pocketbooks while eliciting ew,i any, lasting results. Why?

Diets dont workbecause each personis unique, with dierent needs based ongender, age, ancestry and liestyle; how

could one diet be right or everyone?

Diets dont workbecause they areextreme solutions. As in physics, i apendulum swings to one extreme, ithas to swing equally to the other. Adiet might work or a short amounto time, but research shows thatalmost all diets result in a 10-pound

    gain once o the diet.

Diets dont workbecause they aretoo restrictive. People who ail ondiet plans are not fawed or weak.Diets by nature require discipline andrestriction at levels that are unsus-tainable by a healthy human body.

    Most people are disconnected

rom why they gain weight and seediet as the only culprit. For example, ignoring or discounting emotionsis oten the rst thing to causeweight imbalances.

In our ast-paced world, we have lostsight o many aspects o lie that trulynourish and balance our bodies, such asslowing down, eating a home-cookedmeal and spending quality time withloving people. Eating consciously andmaking simple liestyle changes will cre-ate positive results and release you romthe endless cycle o dieting.

Given hal a chance, your body will bal-

ance out by itsel, but this is only pos-sible by getting out o the diet men-tality and listening to what you trulyneed. Imagine taking all o the outwardenergy you expend on diets, ads and

gimmicks and turning it inward, sothat you can listen to your heart andinner wisdom. There is no such thingas a quick x; you already have every-thing you need within you. With careulthought and loving refection, you caneed yoursel in a nourishing way. Work-ing with your body rather than againstit will bring you increased energy, stabi-lized weight and sustainable health.

you are a woman businessowner, your connections withother women are essential or

many reasons. Women need tohelp each other climb that ladder osuccess. The good old boy networkhas been around orever. How aboutthe great woman network? It s timeto shatter the stereotype that womencant get along in business. We needto get together ace-to-ace to ap-

plaud each others successes and helpeach other through tough times.

Here are ve things to look or whenmaking a riend with another womanin the world o business.

    1. Does she call you back on aregular basis? A true business riend

doesnt let days and weeks go bybeore calling you back. She may bebusy, but i you are riends and col-leagues. she owes you the courtesyo a call back, even i it is brie. I shedoesnt have time, you both shouldplan a time when you can talk.

    2. Do you meet or coee or lunchoccasionally? Meeting ace-to-ace isan important part o making a trueconnection with another person.Sure, you can have interesting con-versations and build a cordial rela-tionship online, but there is nothinglike an old-ashioned, sit across romeach other heart-to-heart betweentwo women, and the act that you areboth in business makes the conversa-

    tion even more exciting.

    3. Does she seem truly interested inyour business and your lie? Healthycolleagues are ones who listen well, oer you insight, and are there or youno matter what is going on. They alsolet you play the same role or them.

I had one riend who was so wellmeaning, but it was always about hergiving me advice. Very rarely did sheopen hersel up and give me the gito being a support to her. Relation-ships, business and personal, are atwo way street.

    4. Does she tell you what you wantto hear or is she constructively hon-

est with you? Weve all heard the storyo the Emperors New Clothes. Surewe want our women riends to tell ushow great were doing, but we alsoneed riends who tell us when theysee red fags, or sense that we maybe going down the wrong path. Imnot talking about someone who isunduly critical. I just know that I want

my women riends in business to beable to disagree with me in a positiveway, especially i they are more expe-rienced than I am.

    5. Is she someone you can trust? Here is where women get into troublesometimes in the business world. We

become riends so ast sometimesthat we throw caution to the windand may tell someone we barelyknow our innermost secrets. It mightbe wise to take your time develop-ing your relationship with anotherbusiness woman. Time will tell i sheis someone who can be trusted. She

should also be someone you can beopen with i a miscommunicationtakes place between the two o you.

Ive always believed that a riend-ship isnt really solid until it has beentested. With a true business colleague,

you can work things out, clear the air,and move orward in a positive way.

As more and more women enter thebusiness world, the number owomen-to-women business relation-ships are going to increase. Lets showthe world through our actions thatnot only can women get along, butthey can also be a great support oreach other.

And I hope that i we meet on the lad-der o success, whoever is higher, willgive the other woman a boost.
