MEET THE COACHING STAFFS... Gustavus Head Coach Mike Carroll is in his 13th season at the helm for the Gusties. He has compiled an overall record of 271-64-21 in 13 seasons on the bench and has the most coaching victories in the history of the program. Carroll, an Edina, Minn. native, competed in hockey and baseball at Minnesota State University-Mankato. After graduating with a degree in municipal recreation in 1982, Carroll played professional baseball in the Montreal Expos organization for two years.

Carroll is assisted by Steve Carroll (MSU-Mankato ‘81) - named one of the 10 greatest Mavericks in their men’s hockey program; Kirstin Peterson (Gustavus ‘11), a three-time All-American for the Gustavus women’s hockey program from 2008-11; and Matt Carroll, Mike’s son.

The 2011-12 season is Dan Laughlin’s ninth as the Yellow-jackets head women’s hockey coach. A native of Minnetonka, Minn., Laughlin is the all-time leader in wins among Yellowjacket women’s hockey coaches with an overall record of 145-56-20 in eight seasons at the helm. His winning percentage of .701 is ranked tenth among all active NCAA Division I and Division III hockey coaches.

Laughlin is assisted by Jamie Stauber who is in his third season as the assistant coach for the Yellowjackets.

ABOUT SUPERIOR... Laughlin has guided the Yellowjackets to heights never seen by the program, culminating with an appearance in the Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Championships in 2008, where the team finished in fourth place. It was the second time the Yellowjackets qualified for the NCAA tournament, the previous time coming in 2006. Laughlin’s teams, which have been ranked in the top ten nationally in each of his seasons have won three NCHA regular season titles (2004, 2007, 2008) and one NCHA playoff championship (2008). In addition to team success, Laughlin has seen his players enjoy individual success, as eight players have been named All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association. He has had 22 players named First Team All-NCHA and 59 players named to the NCHA All-Academic Team.

Through 11 games this season, the Yellowjackets are led by Kelsey Firkus with 12 points on four goals and eight assists. Firkus ranks fifth in the NCHA in point scoring, averaging 1.09 points per game. Fellow sophomore Sheryl Kaskiw leads the team in assists with 10, which also puts her at the top of the conference in defensemen scoring (0.91 points per game) and second in assist scoring (same).

In goal, Shanley Peters and Amy Torgerson have traded off defending the Yellowjackets net. Peters has started in six games with a 1.47 goals against average, .927 save percentage and a 3-2-1 record. Torgerson has started five games with a 1.58 goals against average, .907 save percentage and a 3-1-1 record.

NATIONAL LEADER... Gustavus senior forward Allie Schwab ranks second in all of Division III in points per game (2.00) and game-winning goals (4). She also ranks sixth in assists per game (1.11), 10th in power play goals (3) and 11th in goals per game (0.89). As a team, the Gusties rank second in the nation in scoring offense (5.67 goals per game) and power play (32.6-percent), and third in the penalty kill (93.9-percent) and scoring margin (+4.11).

6:37... The Gusties trailed for the first time all season last Tuesday when UW-River Falls scored at the 17:46 mark in the second period. But the Black and Gold came out with a renewed energy in the third and netted the equalizer 4:23 into the frame on a breakaway goal by Melissa Doyle. The goal ended a 6:37 time period where the Gusites trailed after not trailing in the previous 517:46.

POLL POSITION... Nine games into the 2011-12 campaign and without a loss on their record, the Gusties maintained their No. 6 spot in the national rankings according to the latest United States College Hockey Online (USCHO.com) poll with 80 points. The Yellowjackets come in ranked No. 9 in the USCHO.com poll with 23 points. In the D3hockey.com poll, the Gusties rank No. 5, while the Yellowjackets are No. 10.

MIAC LEADERS... With a perfect 6-0-0 mark in the conference, Gustavus obviously tops to MIAC standings, but they also top various statistical categories. They rank No. 1 in the league in scoring offense (5.67 goals per game), scoring defense (1.56 goals allowed per game), power play (32.6-percent), penalty kill (93.9-percent) and special teams net (+14).

IT’S HOW YOU FINISH... The Gusties are off to their best start in program history without a loss through nine games, which is good for a three-point lead atop the MIAC standings. However, under the direction of 13-year head coach Mike Carroll, the Gusties typically play their best hockey after Christmas break:
