Greetings from Notre Dame! This year has been an incredibly music-filled year for the Women’s Liturgical Choir. The WLC sang all of the usual Basilica events including Saturday Vigil Masses, Sunday Vespers, Stations of the Cross, Mass for the Feast of the Annunciation, and Advent Lessons and Carols as well as University events such as the Opening of the School Year Mass, and Jun-ior Parents Weekend. Additionally, a few members of the WLC sang First Vespers for the Annunciation for the Center for Liturgy in Geddes Hall Chapel; the whole choir sang the Memorial Mass for Notre Dame student Lisa Yang and Palm Sunday Mass at St. Mark’s Church in Niles, MI.
November was a particularly intense month for the WLC as we joined forces with the Notre Dame symphony and three other choirs to perform an all Beethoven concert in honor of the 200th anniversary of Fr. Sorin’s birth. The combined ensemble of more than 300 musicians performed Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy and Mass in C. This enormous un-dertaking was certainly a fitting tribute for Notre Dame’s founder who never failed to dream big!
The evening of March 4, the WLC combined forces with symphony and all of the choirs from Campus Ministry and the Department of Music to sing the Memorial Tribute to Fr. Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C. This event included speeches given by many dignitaries from the U.S. and diverse musical selections from Rutter’s The Lord is My Shepherd to Carter’s setting of the spiritual Steal Away to the Spanish hymn Pescador de Hombres.
This year’s spring tour took us to Texas over spring break. We had a wonderful time sing-ing at the Cathedral Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dallas, St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Dallas, Prince of Peace Church in Plano, St. Mary’s Cathedral in Austin, and St. Anthony de Padua Church in San Antonio. We enjoyed the break from a bitter winter in South Bend to explore in the spring warmth of Texas, especially the River Walk and the Alamo in San Antonio!
It is an exciting time at Notre Dame for organists and choir members with the upcoming installation of the Murdy Family Organ in the Basilica. In October of this year, we also dedicated the McCusker Family Organ. Its permanent home will be in Walton Rehearsal Hall, but will be the temporary instrument in the Basilica during the transition from the current Holtkamp instrument and the Murdy Family Organ’s installation in 2016. You can find more information about these two fantastic instruments on the website of the world-renowned Paul Fritts and Company Organ Builders, frittsorgan.com.
It is an incredible honor to work with such wonderful women in this choir and with such talented graduate assistants. Both of our current graduate assistants, Joseph Ciskanik and Nicholas Mourlam, will be graduating this year. We wish them both and all of our gradu-
ates all the best in their future. I continually learn from the members of this choir about their various aca-demic disciplines from engineering to languages to sociology to science to law and many more. I am grateful to all of them for their continued service to the choir and to the uni-versity community.
Thanks to all of the alumnae and friends of the WLC for your support and encouragement to continue our ministry at the Basilica. We are looking forward to future projects including the possibility of a new WLC recording and an international tour. We appreciate your ongoing support of these endeavors and our ministry as a choir.
Sincerely, Daniel Bayless

This year, WLC went to Texas for three days (Mar 7-9) during the spring break. We performed at the Cathedral Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Dallas, Prince of Peace Church in Plano, St. Mary’s Cathedral in Austin, and St. Anthony de Padua Church in San Antonio. Our music was composed of six themed sections. We enjoyed the music, the beautiful churches, the lovely warm weather in Texas and so much more! Espeically, we want to express our gratitude to Notre Dame Club of Austin and Notre Dame Club of Dallas for their kind help arranging home stays for us!
Greetings from the WLC President!
Hello everyone! I hope this letter finds you all in good health and good spirits, and that you are enjoying catch-ing up with the WLC. As you can see from this year’s newsletter it has been a very busy, and extremely reward-ing, year. Our membership continues to grow, and our schedule seems to get busier each year as we participate in more liturgies and concerts.
This year started out with a digital bang when we re-vamped the WLC website, as well as increased our on-line presence by launching Twitter and Instagram ac-counts, and a YouTube channel for recordings of the football masses. In addition to our usual liturgical duties we joined forces with the
Liturgical Choir, Celebra-tion Choir, Glee Club and the Notre Dame Symphony to perform Beethoven’s Mass in C Major as part of the University’s yearlong celebration of Father Sorin’s bicentennial. The choir also recently returned from a very successful tour of Texas, which included stops in Dal-las, Austin and San Antonio.
Sadly, this year the Notre Dame Family bid goodbye to Father Theodore Hes-burgh. The WLC is espe-cially indebted to Father Ted, as he encouraged and oversaw Notre Dame’s tran-sition from an all male to a co-ed campus; without him our choir may not exist. At his Memorial Tribute we joined our voices with nine other campus choirs to cele-brate and remember his in-credible life and legacy.
Thank you to all of our WLC alumnae for your con-tinued support and prayers, and please don’t hesitate to send us suggestions on how we can stay in better touch with you. We are incredibly thankful for your financial support, and look forward to seeing you in the loft come football season! God bless, Morgen Anyan

“I was never in a
liturgical choir before and
WLC broadens my
knowledge and
experience of music so
much. I even played the
organ in the Basilica
during the organ
workshop! How many
people on earth ever have
this precious opportunity!
One thing I feel sad
when I think about
graduating from Notre

will have to leave WLC,
but being outside the
campus also gives me the
chance to propagate our
choir. WLC is definitely
one of the best memories
in my life.”
