Women’s Ministry 2019 - 2020

WELCOME TO WOMEN’S MINISTRY 2019-2020

I love a new year and the opportunity to start a new journal and dream about the future. As I began 2019, I put a picture of a pride of lions that said “Surround Yourself With Those On the Same Mission As You” in my journal. I love that! This picture shows adventure as if it is right out of a National Geographic Magazine. Lions represent strength. Jesus was called the “lion of Judah” in Revelation 5:5. C.S. Lewis wrote of Aslan, the lion that represented Jesus. Lions live in community and work together in every endeavor. They support and care for one another. Just like the lions, we want to do life together.

We learn and grow best in community. In community we find friendships, prayer support, encouragement, and accountability. I want to invite every woman to join us as we desire to become more like Jesus and join him on mission. We offer Women’s Bible Studies and MomNation (MOPS and Moms in the Middle) for small groups and community. Regardless of which Bible study you choose, we will emphasize Jesus throughout the Bible, as we aspire to be like him. We also offer a Women’s Sunday School class as another option.

In the fall, we will host a special dinner and Night of Worship. A surprise spring event will be announced for 2020. We have Girlfriends Clubs, which are interest-based groups that connect women of all ages. While having fun with the girls, each group also gives back to the community by choosing different service projects.

Join us for an adventure. It can be a Bible study, MomNation, a service project from one of these groups, even step out to do a short-term mission trip. Discover the fun! You don’t want to miss a thing.

We encourage you to stay in one group all year to give you the best opportunity to build friendships.

This year each group will have a special fellowship during the fall semester and a service project in the spring.

We offer a number of studies to choose from. To simplify the process, we suggest that you choose a study that is right for you based on:

• Level of homework intensity• Most convenient day or night of the week

If you are new to Bible study, we suggest you start with a low intensity option.

Register by semester (except year-long studies) at missionhills.org/groupfinder.

Our morning studies provide childcare through our wonderful Kids Ministry Weekday Program. For more information, please see policies in the back of this booklet.

LOW INTENSITY These studies require approximately one to two hours of homework per week.

MID INTENSITY These studies require approximately two to three hours of homework per week.

BRAVE STUDY High School girls / bi-weekly

BRAVE began with a handful of girls who were hungry to go deeper with Jesus. We began meeting in a home in the spring of 2017, and by that October we took a group of forty-one 8th-12th grade girls and ladies on our very first BRAVE Retreat! That weekend, God met with his daughters in a very powerful way!

Following that retreat, we began to meet bi-weekly in a home for worship, speakers, and special events. We then began our very first study together . . . diving into the Word of God in the area of friendships.

Our desire is for our little sisters in Christ to see and know that we, as the older generation, “have their backs” as they fight the good fight of faith! We want them to see women hungry for Jesus, with joy on our faces and a fire in our own hearts as we walk through the trials of life alongside them.

If you have a teenage daughter, we would encourage you to share the BRAVE Teen Study options with them for this fall! They meet in homes, every other Saturday night. For more information, contact Sharon Sands at [email protected]. Teen girls can register for this study online.

City of Lions by Amy Byrd

• Take a journey to Babylon and meet some young men who stood for what was right in a culture that was all wrong.

• Learn what it looks like to be “set apart” and how that is a BRAVE place to stand.

• See powerful examples of unshakeable faith.• Grasp a new understanding of God’s loving plans in the midst of times that

can feel chaotic.

Beautiful Encounters by Erin Davis

• Learn how the presence of Jesus changes everything.• See how Jesus met and changed 11 different New Testament women.• Discover how those who met Jesus up close found grace, true friendship,

living water, and power.• Beautiful lessons come to life as we dive into stories that share one main

character in common: JESUS.

The Shelter Foundation is a non-profit organization working to bridge the gap in first responder communities to know, make known, and be known by God and each other through Bible studies and marriage retreats. Through these efforts, we facilitate the kind of fellowship and support that is desperately needed—but rarely found—in first responder circles.

We believe the best time to build a firm foundation is before tragedy strikes. However, if tragedy becomes your reality, we will stand with you, ready as the hands and feet of Jesus.

In the first responder family, no one fights alone!

BIBLE STUDIESThis fall, the women will be studying Finding God Faithful, a Bible study on the life of Joseph by Kelly Minter, that will help us learn how to hold onto our faith during difficult times. In the spring, we will dive into the book of Job through a study by Lisa Harper. In this study we will look at God’s goodness and love in the midst of our pain and learn how we can glorify God through our trials.

We will have a Tuesday evening bi-weekly study and two Wednesday morning studies to choose from.

FALL SEMESTER September 9 - December 9 | 9:30-11:30 AM

Cost: $95, Discount available for those who do not need childcare

September 9 – KICK-OFFJoin us for our annual kick-off brunch as we introduce this year’s theme “Life to the FULL.” Meet your small group leader, mentor mom, and get acquainted with the other ladies in your group. A fabulous brunch will be served.

September 23 – COME TO THE TABLE (video with Cari Jenkins)Cari Jenkins is the Executive Director of Urban Skye and author of Listen & Live. She loves to host, redecorate daily, play often, and create beauty. She shares tips for inviting others around our table but emphasizes that hospitality is not just about a place, it is about a person. YOU are the place of hospitality, welcoming others as they are and giving of yourself just as you are.

October 7 – PARENTING OUT OF CONFIDENCE AND NOT FEAR It is so easy in this day and age to want to protect our kids from everything, but fear can negatively impact how we parent. The desire to protect our kids from physical or emotional pain is natural, but how do we avoid falling into the fear trap? Kimberley Lorden will be joining us to help us navigate this delicate balance.

October 21 – MARRIAGE: WORKING ON YOUR TOGETHERNESS (video with Mike Foster)Mike Foster is a best-selling author and speaker as well as counselor who helps people build strong lives and relationships. He encourages us to focus on relational “nowness” – being in the moment while honoring each other’s feelings and opinions.

November 4 – ARRESTING ANXIETY These days we set such high expectations, we worry and wonder how we (or our kids) are going to achieve them. This worry can lead us down the road to anxiety and that anxiety can overtake our thoughts. Amy Whitehouse and Brooke Gage will share ways for you to combat anxiety and walk a little more freely.

November 18 – HOW TO PARENT YOUR CHILD’S TEMPERAMENTEvery child is born with his/her own individual way of approaching the world—a temperament. This is not something your child chooses, nor is it something that you created. A child’s temperament shapes the way he/she experiences the world. Rich and Shelly Howard will be joining us from OneFamily to help us learn how to better understand and navigate how our kids function and make decisions.

December 9 – MARY DID YOU KNOW Have you ever looked at Christmas through the eyes of Mary, Jesus’ mother? Join us as Sharon Sands unpacks Mary’s story of faith, trust, and ultimate surrender. Be inspired to look at the Christmas story a little differently.

MONDAY MOPS encouraging, equipping + empowering

SPRING SEMESTER January 6 - May 4 | 9:30-11:30 AM

Cost: $95, Discount available for those who do not need childcare

January 6 – GAME DAYGet your pink on and join us for a fun game day! Enjoy a special brunch . . . of course there will be bacon and door prizes! An entertaining and relaxing morning to start off the New Year.

*TUESDAY January 21 – AM I ENOUGH?From the moment a woman wakes until she falls, exhausted, on her pillow, one question plagues her at every turn: Am I enough? The pressure to do more and be more has never been more intense. Am I pretty enough? Hip enough? Spiritual enough? We fear the answer is “No.” Local author and speaker, Michele Cushatt, shares about her brutal bout with cancer and how it changed how she looked, talked, and lived. The typical self-esteem strategies and positivity plans weren’t enough. Instead, she needed a new foundation, one that wouldn’t prove flimsy when faced with the onslaught of day-to-day life.

February 3 – RAISING LITTLE KIDS WITH BIG LOVEHave full blown tantrums and high-pitched whiny voices made their way into your home? Do you feel a little frustrated? Do you wonder what happened to your precious baby bundle and your patience? When parenting little ones, big love is needed. Popular speaker and author Lori Wildenberg will be our guest speaker for this important topic.

*TUESDAY February 18 – DAD PANELThis is your chance to ask questions that you may have about parenting from a man’s perspective. We have an awesome group of dads willing to share with you their thoughts and ideas about parenting.

March 9 – LIFE TO THE FULLJoin us as Judy Douglas ignites a fire within us to live Life to the FULL, to be courageous and find that fiery spirit that will carry us beyond exhaustion and the ordinary. She will help us grasp how much God loves and cherishes us. By understanding his deep love, we can allow him to do more in us and through us than we could ever imagine.

March 30 – SPA DAYLadies, be prepared to be pampered! Leave behind the hustle and bustle of life, and join us for a healthy breakfast and a morning of relaxation. Come dressed in your yoga pants and comfy shoes.

April 20 – SEX AND INTIMACY IN MARRIAGE Sex and intimacy can be a hotbed of expectations and emotions in any season of your marriage. While the kids are young and exhaustion is a way of life, it can be easy to wonder what the heck happened to your relationship with one another. With candor, wit, and a “we’ve-lived-it” story to tell, Sean and Angie Taylor will talk about why it’s important to keep these valuable components of your rela-tionship front and center during the difficult years of raising small children.

INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH our global partners around the world

One of the exciting and stretching ways that women can join Jesus on mission is to participate in a short-term mission trip.

Around the world, women have many things in common and anyone can be used by God to minister to others. Short-term trips will challenge and bless you, and you will return transformed in some way. Our God is a big God, and he does amazing work on each and every trip.

This fall is a trip to Costa Rica, October 19-27. This team will work with young women who have been exposed to human trafficking through our partners with Face of Justice, faceofjustice.org
