 OUR VISION STATEMENT 

We support the empowerment of women from birth to death through education and experience, self­discovery and growth.  

 We provide opportunity by listening and witnessing without judgment. 

 We invite women to participate in a feminine­centered, non­hierarchical community to 

connect with, and celebrate, the divine feminine in earth­based ways.  

We create sacred space that promotes common welfare by respecting and holding ourselves and others as capable and accountable. 

 We act with integrity in word and deed, and are deeply respectful and trusting of The 

Mystery.  

GREETINGS, BEAUTIFUL GODDESSES!  Thank you for joining us for this beautiful, magical weekend when around 100 women and girls gather to share ceremony, song and sisterhood in a natural setting at the foothills of  the Cascade Mountains. This gathering has taken place annually since 1988, and has a tradition of being a time of connection, enjoyment, and healing.  We are woven together into community through ceremonies, song, camping or lodging together, sharing wonderful food, and partaking of the healing, creative and/or playful activities offered by those who volunteer to share their gifts.  Please take the time to read this Welcome Packet completely. Print all, or portions, of it to bring with you.  More information may be found on our website: http://www.womenssummersolstice.com/ 

 This year’s theme, “AS I AM: Embodying the Goddess,” celebrates each of us.  You are divine as you are and where you are in this moment. We will go inward to acknowledge and greet our inner Goddess, to find within ourselves that perfection of our divine selves. Our scars and “defects”, both hidden and seen, are lessons from the Goddess and we can embrace their teachings. We also go outward­­we reach to our sisters for support and guidance, we hold each other up as we bask in the glow of our inner light. Before the event, please take some time (how much is up to you) to think about how the Goddess manifests in you, what gifts she has bestowed upon you and how you can honor her and show gratitude. Consider bringing costumes or props to proudly show your sisters your personal Goddess style. From tiaras and wings to combat boots and chainmail, let your Goddess out to play! 

 You may arrive on site any time after noon on Thursday. Dinner Thursday night at 5:00 is our first meal together.  The official celebration begins with our Opening Ceremony on Thursday evening at 7:00. The gathering ends with Closing Ceremony after our community cleanup at mid­day on Sunday. Once you are in camp for the weekend, we ask that you plan to remain on site the entire weekend to avoid disrupting the Sacred Energies and Boundaries that have been established. A checklist of what to bring with you is provided in this packet to help you pack carefully, assuring that you will have all you need.  

An orientation session for newcomers will be held on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 in the dining lodge. If you are new to ceremonies or to this gathering, cannot arrive by 4pm on Thursday, or have unanswered questions after reading through this packet and/or perusing our website, feel free to call the WSS phone number at (206) 701­6662 and talk with Jerri, our Communications Chair.  This gathering has been planned with care by the women of the 2016 WSS Core Council, with support from others. We are all unpaid volunteers who have been meeting since last autumn to pull together the many details of an experience that attendees will remember for years to come.   Every year, at Closing Ceremony, we encourage newcomers to step up as volunteers to help us put together the following year’s event. Hold the question in your heart of whether you might be one of the women for 2017!   We hope to gather another great group of volunteers to keep this heart­opening event alive for many years to come!  

SOLSTICE LOGISTICS  Directions to Camp Koinonia  Camp Koinonia is just off I­90, 25 miles east of Snoqualmie Pass and 6 miles west of Cle Elum. Travel time is about two hours from Seattle.   

o Take exit 78 off I­90 (Golf Course Road) o Turn south (right, if you are coming from the west)  o Cross the railroad tracks  o Go up the hill and take the first right (Nelson Siding Road)   o Camp Koinonia entrance starts at the first bend in the road (at junction with Westside Road)  o Watch for Koinonia and WSS signs on the left side of the road  o Please obey the speed limit signs in camp.  Higher speeds on the dirt roads raise a disagreeable 

amount of dust.  Arrival & Check In 

▪ Gates open at noon.   ▪ Immediately upon arrival, please follow signs to the Check In table near the dining hall. ▪ Check in Hours:  Thursday  Noon ­ 5:00 pm and Friday 10:00 am ­ 2:00 pm 

At Check In, you will: o Verify your registration: Please bring valid ID! o Make your name tag: Please wear your nametag throughout the weekend as it assists us all in 

creating community and is helpful should you need to be located for some reason. o Receive your service shift for the weekend. o Receive a cabin assignment (if requested on your registration form). o Receive a vehicle ID note for your dashboard. o Have questions answered and get general information about the site. 

Camping ▪ Upon arrival, you will be directed to the designated camping areas.  ▪ We encourage a mass community of tents in the main meadow near our Sacred Circle. ▪ Tent adornment adds to the beauty of our community.  Streamers, flags, staffs, masks, and other 

decorations help to create a magical spirit.  Be creative! Parking 

▪ Before 6:00 pm on Thursday, you will be able to drive around camp to unload your gear. ▪ Please move your car to a designated parking area after unloading.  Place a card with your name on it 

on your dash to identify your vehicle in case it needs to be moved for any reason. ▪ To preserve our sacred space, vehicles may not be parked in the camping area from Opening 

Ceremony on Thursday until after Closing Ceremony on Sunday.

▪ Please note:  To maintain the sacredness of ceremony, if you arrive at camp during a ceremony, please smudge yourself and your car, park your car just outside the camping area, quietly take care of your immediate needs, and join us in ceremony.  There will be plenty of time and assistance available for unpacking and setting up camp when the ceremony is finished. 

Lodging and Bathroom Facilities ▪ Indoor accommodations are dormitory style cabins. The bunks are standard twin size.  Bedding is not 

supplied, so please remember to bring your own.  You also will be responsible for cleaning the cabin with camp­provided supplies on Sunday before you leave. 

▪ Toilet and shower facilities are located throughout the camp. Please check your map. Meals 

▪ Your registration fee includes three meals per day: continental breakfast, lunch, and dinner, beginning with dinner on Thursday and ending with breakfast on Sunday. 

▪ Bring snacks! Swimming 

▪ The pool is open ONLY when the lifeguard is on duty.  Check the main schedule for times.  ▪ Girls age 13 & under must be supervised by an adult while in the pool area. ▪ Swimsuits are required, and no street clothes are allowed in the swimming pool. ▪ Swimming and fishing in the pond are not permitted. 

Grounds and Community Cleanup ▪ As we prepare to close our circle on Sunday, everyone will be asked to help break down our 

community tents and lodges, and to clean up the camp. ▪ Please conduct all activities with love for the land in mind. This weekend is our time to honor our 

connections to the Earth and to each other.   ▪ We must be off the land by 3:00 pm at the latest on Sunday afternoon.  NO EXCEPTIONS! 

Service Shifts ▪ You will receive your service shift assignment when you check in at Solstice. ▪ We all depend on each other to provide the energy and work needed to create this time together. It is 

in this spirit that we ask each woman, age 13 and older, to serve two 2­hour work shifts (4 hours total) in support of the event.  

▪ Please notify a WSS Council member if you cannot complete your service shift. Safety 

✪ Remember to take care of yourself.  Drink plenty of water, eat, rest when you need to, and remember to take your prescription medications.   

✪ Ask someone to help if you are in need of assistance of any kind. ✪ This is Eastern Washington, and there is a slight possibility of sighting rattlesnakes, coyotes, bears, or 

cougars. ✪ There is a nearby irrigation canal. It is very dangerous and off limits to everyone at all times! Please 

remind your children. ✪ Many women are allergic to perfume and other scented products, such as hand lotion and candles. 

Please use them sparingly. ✪ The use of candles and open fires will depend on the Fire Danger Level. Candles in jars are 

recommended. Solar lights and battery lanterns and candles are safest.  ✪ Camp Koinonia has a drug and alcohol­free policy.  ✪ Please do not bring pets. 

Medical Emergency Response  ▪ If you become aware of a life­threatening medical emergency while on site, please call 911.   ▪ Minor first aid is the responsibility of each participant. ▪ One of our Solstice participants has volunteered to serve as an on­site first aid provider in case of                                   

need.

THE PRESENCE OF FAIRIES AT SOLSTICE The presence of fairies around our campsites and Solstice ceremonies is a much­loved tradition! Young and old are encouraged to don wings, headpieces, wands, body art, and any other fairy­inspired attire throughout the weekend. Solstice Fairies have often been seen in service gathering women to ceremony and flitting around and about the circle. Please come prepared to take part in the magic!  Childcare 

▪ Mothers and Guardians, please keep in mind that the ultimate responsibility for your children’s comfort, well­being, and safety rests at all times with you. Organized childcare is not provided at this event.  

▪ We would like to extend a special invitation to those who are willing to give mothers a break for an hour or two to attend workshops, etc., unencumbered.  If you are willing to provide this vital assistance, please don’t be shy about personally offering your service to a mother or two throughout the weekend.   

 Children’s Activities 

▪ Scheduled activities for girls are interspersed throughout the weekend. Sessions will include crafts, a fairy hunt and nature walk, music, and storytelling in the Sweat Lodge. Detailed information about each planned activity will be posted at the event.  Mothers/Guardians, please accompany your child to the start of each session and ask the workshop provider if your presence will be needed.  

Fairy Baskets ▪ Fairies at Camp Koinonia, though shy and secretive, have made their presence known over the years. 

Children up to age 10 are encouraged to bring a small basket to leave near the Fairy Tent by 9 pm each evening.  In the darkness of the short nights, we can be reasonably assured that the Koinonia Fairies will visit and leave small gifts within the baskets or in the surrounding vegetation.

SACRED COMMERCE AT SOLSTICE Marketplace Women may bring goods to sell at our Marketplace. Examples include handmade drums, rattles, ceremonial garb, hand­crafted artwork, jewelry, herbs, personal care products, and other items supportive of our various personal and spiritual paths. 

▪ Vendors: Bring your own canopy or other set­up ­­­ stakes or weights for the canopy, table(s) or blankets to display your wares, tarp to cover your items during ceremonies and at night. In exchange for space at the Marketplace, please donate one or more items for our Solstice Raffle.   

▪ Security: The Solstice Council cannot provide security, so vendors are expected to share duties as they deem appropriate. Vendors may rely on the Honor System for sales.  

▪ Shoppers: Personal integrity of the purchaser is key to our Honor System for sales.  ▪ Mothers/Guardians: Please accompany children who are interested in browsing and shopping. Please 

do not allow children to explore the area unsupervised.

Solstice Raffle ▪ Proceeds go toward Goddess Grants for next year’s Solstice Celebration. ▪ Bring cash to support our Solstice Raffle! Listen for the “Sacred Hawkers” during mealtimes, and 

purchase multiple chances to win extraordinary items donated by our own Marketplace vendors. ▪ All women are welcome to donate beautiful items to the raffle. ▪ Raffle drawing will be held Sunday morning. 

Goddess Garage Sale ▪ Proceeds go toward Goddess Grants for next year’s Solstice Celebration. ▪ Bring cash! This is an excellent place to find treasures!   Pay what you choose. ▪ All women are encouraged to bring and donate spirit­inspired items, such as gently used clothing, 

jewelry, or books. ▪ Unclaimed items will be donated to a thrift store after the event.

CEREMONIES AT SOLSTICE  The ceremony that is Women’s Summer Solstice begins as you  journey to our gathering.  As you travel, take a moment to breathe and gather your thoughts.  Can you feel a tug on your heart and hear your sisters’ calling? You are invited to the sacred space of  ‘Women’s Circle.’  The power of women in circle and ceremony has been experienced throughout the ages and around the globe. By coming together in song, celebration, and prayer, we connect­into an invisible field, a deep well of womb­an love and support  where we can be fed and nourished.   These ceremonies are the heart of WSS and have been a part of WSS’s tradition for nearly three decades.  They weave us together at deep levels and also connect us backward and forward in time, to our greatest grandmothers, to the wise medicine women of the past, as well as to our great granddaughters, the wise women of the future.    Opening Ceremony and “Earth Weaving” Together we’ll delight in casting our sacred space for the weekend, calling the elements that support our time together.   Plan to meet and greet, sing,  and move as we focus our intentions for our time together and honor each other and ourselves “As I Am,” seeing the goddess reflected in our circle.  For our Earth­Weaving ceremony, please bring a handful of earth, sand or soil from somewhere meaningful to you. It can be from your own garden, a sacred place you visit regularly from your travels.  You will mix your soil with that from your sisters and the soil carried over from year to year held in the gourd “She­Who.” This ritual honors the earth as well as WSS’s “her­story,” tying us all together from the past to the future.  Rites of Passage Our lives have many stages of growth from cradle to grave.  We support each other and our maturation process as we acknowledge and honor the initiatory passages that take us to the depths and transform us into wise, empowered women.   This ceremony will honor Birth (new mothers, new babies),  Maidens (first blood), Crones (newly menopausal women), and Death (sisters who have passed away).  We also will provide the opportunity for women who have experienced initiation journeys (death/loss of partner, sexual violation, serious illness or injury, or recovery from addiction) to gather with each other, be witnessed and honored for their courage. 

● Friday afternoon – small group opportunity for women who have experienced one of these passages to sit with others and share their journeys.  

● Friday evening – culmination of these discussions and an opportunity for the entire community to honor and witness the journeys of our sisters.

 Solstice Ceremony   The longest day calls us to shine!  Please wear something yellow, white, or gold to this ceremony. We will reflect the Sun’s radiance and welcome the summer season with joy and gratitude!  Give Away The flow of life includes both giving and receiving.  For more to flow our way, we must “give away” some of the abundance we already have.  For this ceremony, we each bring something to give away. Please do NOT buy anything; rather choose from what you already have, something special, sacred and well­loved, something from a past phase of life ready to be released.   There is often a bit of magic in this ceremony: what you receive can open new doors for you; what you give away can be the perfect thing for the one who receives it.  And the ceremony will bond you with someone in a mysterious way.  Sacred Theatre of the Goddess Sacred Theatre is based on the idea that your life is a great play − rich dialogue, cast of thousands, many scenes and locations, terrific drama, soul­stirring action.  You are invited to step onto the sacred stage of your life for more energy, more expressiveness, more playfulness, more creativity, and a clearer understanding of the beauty of your life.  Will the goddess call you to sing, dance, tell a story or otherwise share her bounty in sacred space?  Wait and listen within!  If not, please come anyway to honor those who are called to share!  Sweatlodge We are honored to offer this ancient ritual, a deeply healing ceremony that will be held several times over the                                       course of the week­end for those who feel called. An overview of Sweatlodge ritual is this: A ceremonial fire                                     is laid with 30­50 stones in the fire. The fire burns for 2+ hours heating the stones. While the stones are                                         heating we connect with the fire and make prayer bundles to help focus our intentions. Once the rocks are                                     heated, we enter the lodge. Some of the stones are brought in with a pitchfork. The door is covered. We sit                                         in total darkness, praying and singing for as long as it takes for everyone to say their prayers, led by the                                         “water­pourer” who pours water on the stones to create steam. When the time is right, the door is opened                                     and that “round” is over. People can get out and cool off between rounds.  Pipe Ceremony and Closing Ceremony Sacred Pipe Ceremony gives our prayers and gratitude to Spirit!  We conclude with Earth Weaving, giving thanks and recognition for all who worked throughout the year to prepare this event, and to gather our sisters for next year’s volunteer committee. Questions about Ceremonies?  Contact Therese Charvet during the weekend, or e­mail theresecharvet@gmail.com before the event.  

WELLNESS AT SOLSTICE  Wellness Tent Many of the women in the Solstice community are gifted practitioners of the healing arts, including massage, reiki, and other alternative methodologies.  To renew the spirits of their sisters, they offer their services for free during Solstice.  Look for a sign­up board on the Information Kiosk, with a new sign­up sheet for each day’s new offerings.  Note that the number of requests for healing sessions is often greater than the number of sessions available. For this reason, we would deeply appreciate that participants sign up for only one session

throughout the weekend, allowing as many as possible to have an opportunity to experience our sisters’ healing gifts.  

Spontaneous Offerings of Healing  Space will be designated as a separate, unscheduled and autonomous opportunity for women to engage in the great mystery of spontaneous giving and receiving. It will be equipped with an altar that may be blessed with sacred objects from our community, one or two massage tables, chairs, and a message board for all women that choose to give and receive spontaneous healing gifts throughout the weekend. We ask that individuals share the space, use their own supplies, and take it upon themselves to work with each other in communicating their schedules, availability, and needs.   

We are all healers. Women seeking healing help may drop by or leave a request on the message board. Women that feel called to help or share their gifts may make themselves available as they feel appropriate. We hope the synergy of our healing nature will help our community meet more of the needs of individuals seeking healing help. Questions about Wellness?  Contact Lynn Kunkle during the weekend, or e­mail Lynnkunkle01@gmail.com before the event. 

 

WORKSHOPS AT SOLSTICE  Workshops and activities related to spiritual growth and personal interest take place throughout the weekend.    Workshops Planned by the Solstice Council 

▪ Read the schedule on the Information Kiosk to find workshops that interest you.  ▪ Then, write your name on the sign­up sheets posted near the Information Kiosk.  Check there often, as 

spontaneous offerings do arise throughout the weekend.   Spontaneous Workshops Offered by Participants 

▪ You may plan and lead a spontaneous workshop on Thursday, Friday or Saturday when ceremonies are not in progress. 

▪ If you would like to lead a workshop, simply complete a workshop sign­up sheet after you arrive at camp.  Include your name, the topic, and the day/time/place. Post your sign­up sheet on the Information Kiosk.  Then welcome your participants as they arrive to partake in your offering.  

▪ You may charge a materials fee for any materials you provide for participants in your workshop, but you may not charge for your time or instruction.  Please list the materials fee on your sign­up sheet.

Tie Dye One of our favorite activities is back! If you are interested in folding, scrunching, tying, and dying your own Goddess Wear, please bring a natural fiber garment (cotton, rayon, hemp, linen, ramie, wool). New/unwashed fabric works best.  Questions about Tie­Dye? Contact corinna.michels@gmail.com   

MOONLODGE AT SOLSTICE The inspiration of our Moonlodge, also known as a New Moon Lodge or a Red Tent, comes from a time when women retreated to tents or huts to sequester during menstruation. Rather than a place of shunning, a Moonlodge is a womb of safety. Within this sacred space, we honor our divine blood, we rest and accept the loving care and pampering of our sisters, we celebrate our stories, reclaim our birthrights, and explore the mysteries of our moon blood.

Check the Information Kiosk for offerings throughout the weekend. We will host a special workshop for our young women who have stepped into womanhood through menarche on Friday afternoon and an honoring on Friday evening during the Rites of Passage ceremony. Please contact Emily at shewhogathers@icloud.com if you have a daughter or young woman with you who has had her First Blood within the last year.  

SPONTANEOUS CIRCLES AND GENERAL COMMUNING AT SOLSTICE In the spirit of sharing and building community, we encourage spontaneous circles for sharing songs, stories,                               drumming, teaching, laughing and dreaming. Many gather in circles or wander from circle to circle after                               evening ceremonies. Our deepest bonds and lasting friendships often come when we are open to the                               unexpected opportunities to share, and we are accepting of the spontaneous love and acceptance of our                               sisters. 

KINDNESS AND CONSIDERATION AT SOLSTICE Please remember that this gathering is intended to be a time of continuous sacred ceremony.  The WSS Council has worked to create an environment that facilitates a sacred feminine atmosphere.  We will be between the worlds and in Sacred Space from Opening Ceremony through Closing Ceremony.  In that spirit, we offer the following tips and reminders: 

♥ We ask that you treat each other, All Our Relations, and the land with respect, honoring the Sacred Spirit within us all and Mother Earth. 

♥ Please approach sacred space and items with respect. Ask first before touching others’ objects, such as personal body adornment and ceremonial items. 

♥ Please smoke discreetly away from sacred spaces.  ♥ This Gathering has a long tradition of no photography during any ritual or ceremony. Ask permission 

to take photos before or after ceremonies; otherwise, feel free to take pictures during the weekend. ♥ While we encourage everyone to participate in all Ceremonies, should you need to do something else 

during that time, please do so discreetly and quietly.  ♥ This gathering is open to our Transgender sisters.  ♥ We ask that our Transgender sisters dress in discreet attire at all times, particularly in the swimming 

area.  ♥ Please leave cell phones and any other electronics on silent mode and at your cabin or camp site. ♥ Please inhabit a spirit of helpfulness and kindness over the weekend. 

 We honor each other when we serve each other.  Offer help, and please be willing to ask for support. 

♥ Often, as we return to our lives after this magical weekend, we find we need support.  Gather names and contact information from the women that you are drawn to at this event who can assist you later; or contact the WSS Planning Council for assistance. 

 

EXPRESSING GRATITUDE AT SOLSTICE The Give Away Ceremony we practice at Women’s Summer Solstice teaches that we must each extend both of our hands to our sisters.  One hand gives our time and energy to help create WSS, while the other hand receives gratitude from our sisters for our efforts.  Please take a moment to consider how you may give and how may you receive.  What can you do to show your gratitude to your sisters? 

▪ All of us contribute and help create WSS: some drive the shuttle or wash dishes, others lead sweats or workshops, some meet throughout the year and plan the entire event.  All of us are worthy of appreciation for our efforts. 

▪ Consider bringing small treasures that you can gift to your sisters during WSS to show your appreciation:  beads, chocolate, soap, shells, charms, tobacco, etc.   Use your imagination.

▪ Also, you will find blank paper & note cards near the Information kiosk that you may use.   Handwrite a note to let a sister know how you appreciate her.   If you are so called, feel free to bring stationery for other sisters to use. 

What can you do to receive gratitude from your sisters? ▪ When you receive a compliment or gift, pause and look your giver in the eye. ▪ Acknowledge her appreciation of you.  Know that you are worthy. 

WHAT TO BRING TO SOLSTICE Camp Koinonia is located in Eastern Washington in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. The weather at this time of year is very unpredictable, and temperatures have varied wildly over the years.  It can often get quite WINDY.  We can usually count on sunshine during the day, but the camp generally gets cold at night.   Please be prepared for weather changes, especially possible rain.

*Clothing can be wild at Solstice and “optional” when the sun shines. Take the opportunity to be creative in your ceremonial                                         garb and to express yourself throughout the weekend in fun and imaginative ways. We recommend that you include warm                                     pants or skirts and a warm jacket or blanket for the chilly evenings. **Items being donated to the Goddess Garage Sale should be in good condition. Sacred, magical, spiritual, or Solstice­ or                                     Goddess­related items are requested.  ***Koinonia has very good well water that can be used to fill your water bottles.
