On a RollThe Eagles are riding a four-game winning streak in which they are outscoring their opponents by 8.2 points per game. Liz Leer is shooting 55 percent during the stretch and has averaged a team-leading 12.5 ppg. Defense has played a key part in AU’s success, holding its opposition to 48.2 points per contest and 27.5 percent shooting.

60 is the Number American is 4-0 this season when scoring at least 60 points, and going back to last year, the Eagles have won their last 16 games when hitting the 60-point mark. AU’s last loss when reaching 60 came on December 20, 2009, when Maryland defeated the Eagles, 75-64.

Bender Arena MagicFollowing the triumphs over George Mason, Youngstown State and George Washington in their fi rst three home games of the 2010-11 campaign, the Eagles have now won 30 of their last 35 games played in Bender Arena, which dates back to the 2007-08 season. American fi nished with an 11-2 home record last season.

Impressive RookieFreshman Alexis Dobbs registered career-highs with 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals in Saturday’s 64-60 win over George Washington, which earned her Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors on Monday. That performance came on the heels of a 14-point, six-rebound effort in American’s 57-41 victory over Youngstown State on December 4, where her 14 points set a then-career-best. She has scored in double fi gures in four of her last seven outings, and has recorded at least fi ve rebounds in each of the most recent four games.

Contributing in Other WaysJunior Lisa Strack is American’s second-leading scorer this season with 10.4 ppg. But in Saturday’s victory over GW, Strack made her presence felt in other ways besides scoring, as she registered a career-best 10 rebounds and chipped in seven assists. The seven helpers were one shy of her career-high, which she set on November 19, 2008, against Howard.

Record-Holder from DeepIn the Youngstown State win, Nicole Ryan was 3-7 from three-point range in helping AU to the 16-point victory. The three trifectas gave the senior 163 makes from deep in her career, which set a new program record, passing the previous mark of 160 held by Talicia Jackson ‘09. She knocked down three more threes in AU’s victory over George Washington on Saturday.

Dynamic DuoIn American’s come-from-behind 46-43 win over George Mason on December 2, Liz Leer and Strack combined to score 31 of AU’s 46 points on an effi cient 12-19 from the fl oor. Leer led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds, both of which were game-highs, while Strack added 13 points and a career-best fi ve steals. So far this season, Leer and Strack are shooting a combined 46.6 percent from the fi eld on the season, including an even 46.1 percent (18-39) from three-point range.

Block PartyThe Eagles recorded nine blocked shots in the November 28 win over Charleston Southern, which tied for the second most single-game blocks in program history. The school record sits at 10, which occured on March 9, 2001 when the Eagles registered 10 against James Madison. Leer led American with fi ve in the contest, one shy of her single-game school record of six.

Red Hot from DeepStrack recorded a career-high 20 points in the November 28 triumph against Charleston Southern, which came on 6-12 from the fl oor, including 3-4 from beyond-the-arc. Strack is 10-for-19 from three-point range so far this season for 52.6 percent.

Double Your PleasureLeer has recorded double-doubles in three of American’s fi rst 10 games this season, which gives her six in her career. She registered 15 points and 13 rebounds in AU’s season-opening win at East Carolina, and put together a 16-point, 14-rebound performance in AU’s triumph at Mount St. Mary’s on November 17. Her 14 rebounds matched a career-high, as did her fi ve assists against The Mount. Leer most recently put together a 12-point, 10-rebound effort against Sam Houston State on November 26.

Aggressive DEbony Edwards has recorded four steals in three different games this season, most recently in the November 27th contest at Texas Tech. She is currently third in the conference with 2.1 steals per game.

A Baker’s DozenIn American’s win at Mount St. Mary’s on November 17, Leer became the 13th AU women’s basketball student-athlete to reach 1,000 career points. She currently sits 11th in school history with 1,067 points, 29 points shy of Kate Miller for 10th all-time.

A Perfect 10During a stretch in the Eagles’ victory over Mount St. Mary’s on November 17, American knocked down 10 consecutive three-pointers. This came during a 10:45 run of play at the end of the fi rst half and into the fi rst 9:02 of the second period. AU fi nished with 11 made threes in the game, which tied for the second most single-game treys in program history.

Stepping Up the Defense AU held Mount St. Mary’s to 34 points, marking the second fewest points the Eagles have given up in a single-game in program history. The record was set when American surrendered 31 points to Lafayette last January 30 in a 22-point victory.

Leader of the PackAmerican has been chosen fi rst in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, which was voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. This marks the fi rst time AU has ever been picked to win its conference. The Eagles have now improved by one spot in each of the last fi ve Patriot League Preseason Polls.

Postseason Play AgainLast season marked the third straight year American made a postseason appearance, which set a new program record. It was the fourth WNIT berth for the Eagles in program history (1998, 2008, 2009 and 2010).

20-20 Vision American fi nished 2009-10 with 22 wins, the second most single-season victories in program history. It marked their fourth-ever 20-win season and fi rst since 1997-98.

Leadership at the TopHead Coach Matt Corkery was chosen as the Patriot League Coach of the Year

last season. He became only the second women’s basketball coach in program history to be recogized with the award, joining Melissa McFerrin following the 2007-08 season.

Topping the ChartsAt 13-1 in conference play in 2009-10, American earned a share of the Patriot League regular season championship. This was the second ever conference regular season title for the Eagles, as AU captured it in 2008 with an 11-3 Patriot League mark.

Matt Corkery is in his third season as the head women’s basketball coach at American University. Corkery has a 44-24 career record at AU, including a 22-6 mark in Patriot League play.

The 2009-10 campaign was a historic season for Corkery’s Eagles. American fi nished Patriot League play with a 13-1 Patriot League record, its best ever conference record, and earned a share of the Patriot League regular season championship. Additionally, AU’s 22-10 overall record gave the Eagles only their fourth ever 20-win season. The 22 wins were the second most ever in school history, and AU was rewarded with its program-record third straight postseason berth.

Additionally, junior forward Michelle Kirk was named the program’s fi rst ever conference Player of the Year, as well as a ECAC Division I All-Star and Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete. Classmate Liz Leer joined her on the All-PL First Team, marking the fi rst time in program history the Eagles have had two fi rst team selections as a member of the Patriot League.

Finally, Corkery became the second AU women’s basketball coach to be named Patriot League Coach of the Year. Melissa McFerrin received the honor following the 2008 campaign.

In 2008-09, Corkery led American to a 19-12 record, which included the program’s second consecutive postseason appearance. The Eagles’ 10-5 non-conference record was the best in school history, and their 19 total victories were the most since the 1997-98 campaign. The Eagles defeated two NCAA Tournament teams, Drexel and Lehigh, during the season.

Additionally, Corkery coached three All-Patriot League selections in 2008-09, including First Team performer Michelle Kirk and All-Rookie Team honorees Ebony Edwards and Lisa Strack. Corkery oversaw the largest women’s basketball crowd in school history when 1,177 fans attended the home game against Lehigh on February 7, 2009.

“We are pleased with the progress that Matt and his staff have made with our women’s basketball program over the last two years both on and off the court,” commented Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith Gill. “He is a great teacher of the game and his passion for this team will translate into continued success for this program. We’re excited for what this season and the future will bring.”

Corkery was named to his current position on May 19, 2008 after serving

as AU’s associate head coach during the 2007-08 campaign. In total, Corkery has been on the AU staff for fi ve seasons. In 2007, he was elevated from assistant coach and recruiting coordinator to associate head coach. With the promotion, Corkery assumed additional responsibilities both on and off the court.

Corkery joined the Eagles in 2004 after spending three seasons as the associate head coach at Division II Emporia State (Kan.). During his tenure with the Hornets, Corkery helped guide the squad to a 63-25 record and No. 2 rankings nationally in both the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons.

Corkery served as an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin University from 1999-2001. During his tenure, the Ladyjacks won consecutive Southland Conference titles and made successive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In 2000, the Ladyjacks advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Tournament as a 12-seed. Corkery’s squad recorded a 54-11 record during his tenure at Stephen F. Austin.

From 1996 to 1999, as head coach at Howard College (Texas), he led the Lady Hawks to three top 10 rankings in the National Junior College Athletic Association polls and an overall record of 90-12. In 1998, Corkery was named the NJCAA Region V Coach of the Year, as his squad compiled a 34-3 record and fi nished in third-place in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Corkery earned a Bachelor’s degree in education in 1993 and a Master’s of sports and exercise sciences in 1996 from West Texas A&M University. While with the Lady Buffs, Corkery worked his way up from student assistant coach to graduate assistant and eventually earned a full-time assistant coaching position. As an assistant, Corkery mentored a Buffs squad that went 28-3, won the Lone Star Conference title and was ranked as high as No. 4 in the NCAA Division II national rankings in the 1995-96 campaign. The team’s record during Corkery’s tenure as an assistant at West Texas A&M was 120-32.

A native of Whitharral, Texas, Corkery currently resides in Washington, D.C.
