Women’s Health Grampians May 2013 Regional leadership, influence and advocacy for women’s health and wellbeing Same-sex Marriage and equality April saw both the French and New Zealand parliaments pass marriage equality legislation. This is fantastic news as WHG supports equality in many forms and as New Zealand resident Jake Andrew eloquently stated "I am so happy, not only because I can now marry the person I love, but because New Zealand has moved a step further towards gay and lesbian people becoming completely equal with the rest of our society." Equality on many levels is important if the health and wellbeing of an individual or a society is to flourish. We know that countries with greater gender equality tend to have lower levels of violence against women, and not coincidently many of these countries have also passed same-sex marriage legislation. Labour MP Louisa Wall, who introduced the NZ legislation, said "In our society, the meaning of marriage is universal - it's a declaration of love and commitment to a special person". Same-sex Marriage and equality

April saw both the French and New Zealand parliaments pass marriage equality legislation. This is fantastic news as WHG supports equality in many

forms and as New Zealand resident Jake Andrew eloquently stated "I am so happy, not only because I can now marry the person I love, but because New Zealand has moved a step further towards gay and lesbian people becoming completely equal with the rest of our society."

Equality on many levels is important if the health and wellbeing of an individual or a society is to flourish. We know that countries with greater gender equality tend to

have lower levels of violence against women, and not coincidently many of these countries have also passed same-sex marriage legislation.

Labour MP Louisa Wall, who introduced the NZ legislation, said "In our society, the meaning of marriage is universal - it's a declaration of love and commitment to a special person".
