    OWOW (Outstanding Women On Water) this is the 25thAnniversary of this premier event! TheSouthern California Yachting Association and I welcome you to the Womens Sailing Convention at the beautiful Bahia Corinthian

    Yacht Club. This years Convention will bring sailors of different generations and backgrounds together to share their knowledge

    and skill in the wonderful lifestyle of boating. We encourage you to select workshops that best fit your boating interests and ability.We know you will enjoy these outstanding seminars, with enthusiastic and knowlegeable instructors. Youll have an opportunity to

    improve your sailing expertise and to network with other women from all over the state and across the country. On behalf of SCYA, I

    Please read carefully and observe details relevant to your participation.

    Wokho Selection:Forbothmorning and afternoon sessions, pick either two (2) LAND-

    BASED orone (1) WATER-BASED workshop andmake a second choiceselectionas an alternate for planning purposes. See Schedule and Qualifi-cations Levels on page 6 and Descriptions of Workshops on page 4-5.

    You must SELECT a 1st CHOICE group of workshops and provide an alter-nate 2nd CHOICE based on your interests. Space is very limited in someworkshops, and all registrations are on a first-come, first-served basis. AConfirmation will be sent via email. Print it out and bring it to the Registra-tion Desk. Double check your selections so you are not choosing yourworkshops in the same two time periods. Read the Registration ScheduleMatrix Chart carefully. Website has a suggested selection of TACKS if youcant decide what to take. The TACKS are divided into areas of interest.

    Note:We are offering a 3-ring 1 binder for your workshop handouts at

    $5.00. If you want one, be sure to include it on your reservation form onpage 7. This binder does NOT include the workshop handouts from all theworkshops offered.

    Fee:Early Bird Registration 12/10/13 - 12/31/13 is $185/pp. Registration between 1/1/14- 1/28/14 is $200/pp. Late Registrations (and walk-ins) received after 1/28/14 are$215/pp. Fee includes workshop sessions, breakfast, lunch, dinner, souvenir giftand workshop handouts from the instructor (if applicable).

    Capt. Katie Ohme-AnolFormer instructor for OCC Sailing Center for 8 yrs., a expri-enced cruiser with Mediterrean, Atlantic, Caribbean and Flor-ida (15,000+ miles). She is a member of BCYC, has been theco-chair of this Convention for the past 17 years, organizing thecoaches and donated boats. SCYA Peggy Slater Award in 2000.

    Capt. Patt CooPatty has raced and cruised for over 40 years. In the 70s withher husband and two young sons crossed the Gulf Stream ina 24-ft sailboat for a month of cruising. Member of BalboaYacht Club and Newport Ocean Sailing Association; USSANational Judge and SCYA Principal Race Officer (PRO). Holdsa 100-ton USCG Masters License.

    Capt. Holl ScottStarting at 3 and at 15 skippering her parents Cal 36,Holly has her 100-ton Masters License, takes groups allover the world. She charters on her Cal 40 Mahalo toCatalina, Channel Islands and Mexico. She now ownesCharlies Charts, which publishes six cruising guides fromAlaska to Tahiti. Winner SCYA Peggy Slater Award in 2012.

    Capt. Nanc EleNancy did two circumnavigations aboard her Orca38 Tethys with all-women. She holds USCG Master ofOceans license, advanced HAM license, ISPA offshoreinstructor evaluator certification and scuba certification.Teaches women sailing as well as captaining skills. Sheis the NWSA/BoatU.S. 2006 Winner of the Leadership in

    Womens Sailing Award.

    Capt. Alion OiniUSCG 100-ton Licensed Captain, Alison teaches boat handlingskills, safety, navigation, coastal piloting & charting. Doesboat deliveries, takes groups on day sails, sunset, fishing,whale watching and Channel Islands cruises. She is involvedin aquatics, swimming pool/waterpark design, aquatic riskmanagement, and provides litigation support.

    Sand MilSandy will make the 2009-2012 Racing Rules 101 and Tactics101 understandable and fun. She is a US SAILING Judgeand Principal Race Officer (PRO) for BCYC. She served onmany race committees for regattas, and protest committees,has experience in racing on small dinghies to big boats. Shewon the SCYA Peggy Slater Award in 2008.

    Capt. Patee ObePatsee raised in Newport Beach, sailing and racing since 5. She

    has held her 100-Ton USCG Captains License for 30+ years.Patsee has navigated her way to the South Pacific before SatNav or GPS, using a sextant to guide her across the Pacificand back; delivered vessels from SF to La Paz; sailed in manyparts of the world, and teaches sailing.

    Jud-Rae KaenBeginning her sailing passion in Chicago, Judy-Rae movedto SC and found her calling. She is on the Board of the LongBeach Sailing Foundation, member of LBYC, and ProgramDirector of Sea Gals: Womens Sailing Events. She is avidsailor and crew member on boats of all sizes. Enthusiamis her middle name. Winner of Peggy Slater Award in 2012.

    Vici Sweet, R.N.An emergency nurse and certified herbalist, Vicki is an avidsailor and racer. Had several adventures where her emergencynursing skills were used. Vicki is a past Vice Commodore ofthe Womens Ocean Racing Sailing Association. She is an ac-complished public speaker and is a partner in CreativeMinds,

    educational consulting firm.

    Capt. Patt GafielPatty entered her first race ever 2005 Transpac race fromLA-Hawaii ! She and Capt. Diane Murray made history as firstwomens doubled-handed entry skippering her 47-ft Catalina,Charmed Life. She has USCG 100-ton Lic. and owns FaralloneYacht Sales, Inc, dealer for Catalina Yachts in Newport Beach,Northern California and San Diego

    Capt. Helene WebWhen Helene Webb isnt visiting her boating neighborsin Santa Barbara harbor, shes either racing or teachingothers to sail. When shes docked, she is creating art ordoing graphic design. Love of ocean provides inspirationfor regatta art, logos for harbor businesses, designs web-sites and nautical charts. A WSC instructor for many years.

    Cind WynneCindy joined Aventura SC in Dana Point and got a passionfor sailing and grew into racing with all-women crews andteaching women. Raced Newport Ensenada Race for 17 years;won The Caroline Starr Trophy 3 times; competed in LindaElias Womens One Design; Regatta Las Marietas WomensOne Design in Puerto Vallarta.

    Capt. Annette CooAs 100-ton Captain, deliveres in Mexico, Fiji, Tahiti, Greece andFlorida Gulf Coast. Member Aventura Sailing Club; taught sail-ing, management, fire control, medicine at sea and powering,celestial navigation, marine biology, and is a R.N. Won CarolineStarr Trophy-1998 Ensenada Race. 2004 SCYA Peggy SlaterAward; WORSA Commodore 2006-2009/12.

    Toni BaiuncoToni has been around boats on Barnegat Bay, NJ since five.She and her husband, Joe, own a beautiful Hunter 40 whichthey have raced and cruised extensively in local waters sincemoving to Calif. in the 60s. Toni has spearheaded the tabledecorations for every convention for the past 25 years.

    Capt. Diane MuaDiane is a N California sailor with 46,000 miles, USCG 100-tonMasters License and a certified US Sailing Instructor. Doubledhanded with Patty Garfield in 2005 Transpac. She organizeswomens charters in Greece, Australia, Windward and LeewardIslands. She skippers her own 40 Ketch in San Francisco Bay.

    The speaker for the 25th Anniversary event is our own founder and organizer of every Womens Sailing Convention since its inception in 1990. GailHine has been a leader of the sailing community throughout Southern California for the past 40 years, and a special mentor to womens sailing groups.Her list of achievements is lengthy but the highlights include being the first to receive the Peggy Slater Award, the first female SCYA Director and thenCommodore, Commodore of the Redondo Beach YC, President of the Recreational Boaters of California, ASMBYCs and BCYCs Yachtsman of the Yearand the recipient of the BoatU.S. / National Womens Sailing Associations Leadership in Womens Sailing Award in 2002. In all these years, she hasbeen an active racer in her local regattas, with an outstanding winning record at the peak of her sailing career around 1984. In addition to this, Gailowns and operates her own advertising agency and graphic design business TeamWay Marketing and Design.

    Rhona TolaAs a very active member of BCYC, Ronda has been sailing forabout 10 years. She brings much enthusiasm and joy to hersailing experience. She owns a Jeanneau 57 Wild Thing III

    which is equipped for the absolute ultimate cruiser.

    Kan JoneShe started sailing in mid 90s and has become an integralpart of womens sailing community in MDR and immediatelystarted in match racing (foredeck on some national events),

    one-designs and PHRF. Karyn won 2007 Peggy Slater Award.

    This introductory workshop provides a wide diversity of

    basic information for the new or inexperienced sailor. Ba-

    sic terminology, a knot or two, protocol, safety and much

    more. Asked to trim the sails you went below for scis-

    sors? Fall off and you said no way. Surprise everyone

    with your new skills. Join Monique and Vicki for a session of

    fun and become a smarter new sailor or first mate. [14A.1]

    Baic Nav Rule & BowinePresented by Capt. Kathie Ohmer

    As a follow up to our Welcome Aboard workshop, learn the

    Basic Rules before you go sailing with anyone! Right of Way

    rules, Day and Nightime signals for all size boats and ships.

    Tricks to help you remember them! Learn to tie a basic

    bowline 3 different ways. Bowlines are used for everything

    on a boat from saving a person overboard to securing a line

    to a sail or a cleat. Kathie is a very knowledgeable instructor

    and will make this workshop fun, too. [14A.2]

    Goin Up te MatPresented by Capt. Nancy Erley

    Techniques for going aloft, including using the bosuns chair

    with block and tackle rigging at dock side. Learn SAFETY

    first, terminology, assisting crew protocol, selecting the right

    deck shoes and sailing gloves. Space is very limited. [14A.3]

    10 Suie Cuiin OffoePresented by Capt. Nancy ErleyA captain of two world circumnavigations, Nancy Erley will

    give you 10 and maybe more valuable insights that she calls

    surprises in the wonderful world of offshore cruising. Her

    softspoken manner will give confidence and knowledge for

    those who plan to go sailing offshore / worldwide in either

    the near or distant future. A must for serious cruising sailors.

    Maine Naviation 101Presented by Capt. Alison Osinski

    Learn basics of coastal piloting how to read a chart, use

    plotting tools and reference publications to find your way

    on the water. How to use landmarks, soundings and naviga-

    tional aids, in addition to electronic devices (GPS and chart-plotters), find your position, measure distances, determine

    course to steer to arrive at intended destination, keep track

    of where you are and where you are heading, and estimate

    time of arrival. Importantly, learn to avoid common ma-

    rine navigational errors. Includes hands-on charting prac-

    tice. Workbook to continue skills learned after the conven-

    tion is over. [14A.6]

    Maine Naviation 201Presented by Capt. Alison Osinski

    After being exposed to the basics (Marine Navigation 101), put

    that information to practical use. Learn to: Obtain a 3-line-

    of-position fix to make sure your anchor is set and youre notdragging through the night Estimate distance from an ob-

    ject using a running fix Create waypoints & routes, & plan a

    cruise Determine speed made good and course made good

    Determine the course need to steer to compensate for a

    known set (direction of current) and drift (speed of the current)

    Use RADAR and AIS to identify ships and avoid collisions. In-

    cludes hands-on charting practice. Workbook to continue skills

    learned after convention. [14A.7]

    Weate WiomPresented by Capt. Patty Cook

    Cruiser, racer or day sailor will all benefit from this

    workshop. Practical introduction to marine weather.Recognize, interpret, evaluate and forecast the weatherfrom information sources such as marine radio and

    weather fax. Taught by a sailor who has years of coastalexperience. [14A.8]

    Winc WizadPresented by Capt. Holly Scott

    Your winches wont turn. Capt. Holly will show you how to

    get into the innards of those most valuable of deck hands,

    grease up the gears and put it back together again. Amaze

    Dockin You SailoatThis all-morning class teaches you how to judge your

    boats speed, maneurving in and out of a slip, the corre

    way to tie up to the dock, and set a spring line. Perenn

    Oveoa PoceueProper methods of overboard recovery will be dem-

    onstrated and practiced on a vessel. Our coaches have

    many miles and instructional experience to make this a

    Get into racing - become a better sailor! In this workshop.

    Sandy tell us about the entry forms, starting signals are, wh

    a race around the harbor. You must have Intermediate level experience to consider this class.[14A.11]

    Baic Rule & TacticPresented by Sandy Mills

    After Intro to Racing workshop above, get the fundamental

    rules of racing so you know what you can and cant do and

    some basic tactics you want on the race course. Get prepar

    for the afternoon race. [14A.12]

    How to Heave a LinePresented by Capt. Nancy ErleyNancy Erley knows so many cool things about boating...we

    could invent several more workshops. So this year, Nancy

    is going to present a hands-on class practicing traditional

    sailor skills of snagging a cleat, tossing (throwing) and

    making up (coiling or flaking) a line. Learn techniques for

    distance and accuracy, including target practice. [14P.6]

    Suddenl SinglehandePresented by Capt. Patty Cook

    This terrificinteractive workshop will use real life boating

    situations to teach you how to cope with an emergency situ-ation, determining what needs to be done and the order to

    do it. Here you will evaluate your skills and those of your

    classmates, decide if you can cope or will need outside as-

    sistance, practice using the radio, learn about handling your

    boat short handed and getting to safe harbor. [14P.7]

    Dockside demonstration of sail trim techniquesfairlead

    position, halyard tension, sheet trim for genoa shape and

    speed; how the outhaul, vang, backstay, and traveler affectthe main. An important step in understanding how sails

    Riggin Spinnae ( Dockie)Presented by Cindy Wynne

    This is a dockside workshop on spinnaker rigging on boats

    under 32-ft that gybe the pole end-for-end. Learn set-up,

    function and purpose of sheets, afterguys, topping lift,

    foreguy, and halyards. Packing that chute is an important

    skill youll find very valuable, too.You must have Inter-

    mediate II level experience to consider this Workshop.

    Nigttime Sailin anNaviationPresented by Capt. Nancy Erley

    Expand the scope of your sailing abilities! This workshop

    covers night vision, steering by compass, navigation aids

    and lights on shore, three bearing fixes at night. In addi-

    tion, well cover identifying ships, collision avoidance at

    night, nighttime deck safety protocols, watch scheduling

    and crew overboard protcol. [14P.10]

    Beyon Bandai-Muc Moe!Presented by Vicki Sweet, RN

    Most sailors know that there are many potential serious inju-ries that can occur on a boat. An experienced emergency nursetakes you beyond band-aids and helps you learn how to man-age more serious injuries until help arrives. Also included how to deal with mal de mer (seasickness), hypothermia, andrecommendations for what to carry in your first aid kit. [14P.1]

    Judy will try to cover all the maintenance items that should

    be done on a sailboat, starting with the basic tool kit, then

    go through different products available, for specific purpos-

    ence. For those who have no or very limited sailing exp

    Intemeiate SailinPut the knowledge gained in your early sailing experi-ences toward more a indepth learning experience sailinthrough Newport Harbor or into the ocean if wind and

    time permits. All points of sail trim will be reinforced.

    Learn to sail for the wind and desired destination. Prac-

    Offoe CuiinWorkshop will cover safety checks, use of VHF radio, ra

    dar, GPS, SSB, EPIRBS, jacklines, rescue drills, reefing,

    and heaving to. Go beyond the breakwater for an after

    PLEASE READ THESE DESCRIPTIONS CAREFULLY.

    NOVICE (0-2)[Passenger]-You havent been on a sailboat before. Or

    you have very limited experience. Your knowledge of terminology is rather limited.

    Youve been mostly a passenger on other peoples boats.

    INTERMEDIATE I (3-4)[Crew, dependent upon direction]-Youhave participated in the operation of sailboat under direction. Little or limited steer-

    ing/helming experience. Have basic understanding of sailing terminology, but may

    not know all the terms. Know how and when to use controls for trimming main and

    jib sails and how to adjust for wind direction and conditions. You have some knowl-edge of the rules of the road but may need to ask for guidance.

    INTERMEDIATE II (5-6) [Crew leader, doesnt need close super-vision]-Know all of the Intermediate I standards, plus can follow instructions tooperate traveller, mainsheet, boom vang, cunningham and outhaul on most boats.

    Know how to trim the jib, mainsail, limited spinnaker trim and can steer a boat in the

    groove. You know the rules of the road and how to apply them in real life situations.

    Understand the basics of navigation, able to use chart plotters or GPS. Can dock and

    anchor under normal conditions.

    ADVANCED (7-8)[Skipper experience on inland or near coastal

    waters]- Competent in all aspects of Intermediate II. Can comfortably perform

    any position on a sailboat, including helmsman and foredeck; know how to rig,

    hoist, trim and douse a spinnaker. Have some racing experience OR substantialcruising miles with active participation in watches, both offshore and coastal. Can

    safely navigate in new waters, anchor in crowded anchorage. Understand the

    basics below deck, the head, engine, stove, electrical systems. Can give instruction

    to crew and perform the daily operations of maintaining a sailboat.

    EXPERT (9-10) Comfortable being in charge of a sailboat, directing crew

    racing on inland, near coastal or ocean waters. Sail trim is instinctive, competed

    in a many races and trophied as skipper (or primary crew) a number of times.

    And/or have extensive cruising experience and overnight travel with night watch

    responsibility. Can troubleshoot all systems, rigging failure, diesel engine problems;

    understand marine weather forecasts and plan accordingly; navigate in fog or

    storms, prepare a yacht for offshore passage.
