MissionThe W.G. Watson, M.D., Women’s Center provides the highest quality of care in our community for women and their families.

The Women’s CenterMentor and NamesakeThe Women’s Center at University Hospital is proudly named for Walter Gamewell Watson, M.D. Known endearingly as “Curly” to many, Dr. Watson is said to have delivered more than 15,000 babies during his obstetrical career, but his scholarly, yet loving impact on physicians, patients and the community at large are much more far reaching. Born in 1910, Dr. Watson has been honored by presidents and featured in national magazines. He is an icon across the region and dearly loved by many at University Hospital.

Understanding that men and women really are different at heart, University is the most comprehensive provider of heart and vascular diagnostic and treatment services in the region.

Heart and vascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability in women. And 44 percent of women who have heart attacks die within a year. When it comes to heart and vascular disease, the best defense is a good offense. That’s why University offers women a variety of services, classes, screenings and special events that encourage heart-healthy lifestyles.

University’s Heart Attack & Stroke Prevention Center, located in the University Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute, is designed to assist in identifying clients with both traditional and non-tradition at risk factors for heart attack and stroke.

By focusing on the “red flags” for atherosclerosis, we identify at-risk clients and offer screening exams to detect the presence of disease. By use of ultrasound screenings, including Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (CIMT), Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) and Ankle Brachial Index (ABI), as well as advanced genetic and metabolic testing, we assess them for actual disease as well as future risk, and also try to identify the root cause. We use advanced lipid testing along with the genetic and screening exams to assist in setting optimal treatment and lifestyle goals for clients.

Once all the information is obtained, the patients can make an appointment with their physicians to review it. Clients receiving advanced lab work will have already met with our nurse practitioner who has been trained to review the results of the lab work, screening exams and personal medical history. Our nurse practitioner can adjust or start client medi-cations, if the patient doesn’t have a physician, or create a report for personal physicians for their review and treatment purposes. Clients without a physician are referred to physicians or clinics that are sup-portive of heart attack and stroke prevention.

We believe that an educated and motivated patient is more likely to effect the necessary changes to start on a path to wellness.
