What is The Wonder Cafe?

The Wonder Cafe is a lightly structured and democratic way for participants to explore topics they wonder about. It creates a collaborative and empowered space, rich with voice,choice, and curiosity. The Wonder Cafe can be used for reviews, group reflections, study groups, inquiry based learning, staff meetings, and more.

The Wonder Cafe

Rules

Wonder Host

Facilitates the Wonder Cafe. Moves the Wonder Topic cards. Ensure Wonder Cafe Rules are followed. Manages the time-boxes. The host has permission to interrupt and ask a participant to “bottom line”.

Wonder Guests

Form groups of 4-12. Submit and vote on Wonder Topics All guests are “the expert”, the group provides answers and insights. One person speaking at a time. Bottom line. Get to the point quickly so others can contribute.

1 Wonder Cafe Card Deck

2 Group Tables Group size 4-12 participants

3 Index Cards Or use sticky notes or blank slips of paper

4 Pens Any writing instrument.

5 TimerTime-boxing is essential in Wonder Cafe. Have

a timer that counts down and signals when time is up.

Setup

1.Place Wonder Cafe Table Cards on the table.

2.Hand out index cards or sticky notes 3.Get timer ready.

We Wonder Discuss Done

Wonder Cafe Rhythm

1. Brainstorm Wonder Topics. Set timer for 3 minutes. 2. Vote and order Wonder Topics. Set timer for 2 minutes. 3. Pull first card from We Wonder to Discussing. Set timer for

2-5 minutes for discussion. 4. When timer goes off, stop the discussion and Roman Vote

to continue topic or move to the next topic. If vote to continue topic, reset timer. If vote to move to the next topic, move the topic card from Discussing to Done. Pull the next card from We Wonder to Discussing.

5. At end of the World Cafe session, share your key takeaways.
